610 In the new issue 145 of @theplanmag, dedicated to the relationship between housing and landscape, I criticize two unique homes as linked by the theme of holidays. A @wardle.studio villa on the coast of Victoria, Australia (presented also on the cover) and a very contemporary chalet by @jadricarchitektur in Austrian Alps. . Board Formed Concrete . Board formed concrete is a method using wooden boards as a mold to cast concrete. The plasticity of concrete allows it to take the form and surface finishing of its mold. Using board formed concrete brings life to the material by stamping out the grains on timber board. The imperfection arrangement of timber board will also reflect onto the casted wall. . image courtesy of Matt Risinger, @30by40 . . . . . #technologyinarchitecture #TiA #architecturaltechnology #architecture #design #materials #fabrication #concrete #construction #detailing #architecturedetails #boardformedconcrete #wall #finishing #surfacefinish https://www.instagram.com/p/BtGgCZHAigC/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1fa5swwbk8s3y

Working with concrete in Professor Heiss's DES 240 Product Design III class. Students stay within guidelines to build portions of a stool, such as the concrete seat and height of the chair while simultaneously tapping into their creativity to develop and design the base of the chair. Students in Professor Nikolov's class work on designing their own chairs too. . . . . . . #lehighuniversity #lehighaad #art #architecture #design #productdesign #product #concrete #architecturaltechnology (at Department of Art, Architecture and Design at Lehigh University) https://www.instagram.com/p/CT5MbT3FHKQ/?utm_medium=tumblr

This weeks reading....albeit the reading was brief to say the least.
Japanese architecture has interested me since the start of my architectural career nearly four years ago. My interest lies not just the aesthetics, but the connection of joints, the religious connotations and construction methods.
It is a useful concise book of information with incredibly detailed, hand drawn illustrations helping the reader to understand the complexity of this type of construction.
Chapters run from the “worship” ceremonies in architecture, “Daily Life” in residential and urban architecture through to “Battles” in the castles and towns of Japan. It also contains an architectural chronology that includes periods of important that occurred in the West as well as Japan.

Can we truly maintain our creative autonomy in this AI partnership? The answer depends on how we choose to engage with this technology. Rather than viewing AI as a replacement, we must see it as a powerful medium that extends our capacity to experiment, visualize, and innovate. Imagine an architectural practice where AI handles repetitive, data-heavy tasks, freeing our minds to explore bold ideas, unconventional forms, and more nuanced spatial experiences. Because of this collaboration, the ultimate aspiration is to craft a future where our designs speak with greater clarity, depth, and humanity. Are we ready to reshape our profession with this newfound synergy, or will we let the fear of the unknown keep us from evolving? CHAND BAORI Abhaneri 800-900 AD Chand Baori is one of Indias largest and deepest stepwells consisting of 3,500 narrow steps over 13 stories and extending approximately 30m into the ground. Due to the stepwell reaching such depths, the temperature of the air at the bottom of the well was much cooler than the ground surface creating a thriving social space for the community to meet in hot seasons. This site was seen in movies such as The Dark Knight Rises and Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, a definite architectural highlight for the day. #chandbaori #abhaneri #india #stepwell #indianstepwells #filmlocations #architecturallove #architecturestudent #darknightrises #batman #architecturaltechnology #aincient #history #archiphoto #typicaltouristphoto #culture #knowledgeispower (at Chand Baori)

575 Believe it or not, yesterday Dec 23th we were in class for the Studio. We were "Happy Few" with a lot of panettone (Xmas cake) and sparkling wine (and even a champagne!). Beautiful and precious these moments in which to talk and discuss with students not only about work, but about life. It always gives hope. [for the curious: the party was not photographed! MAS Museum at Antwerp. . The Museum for City History Antwerp is a 20,000 sqm box with a staircase which spirals around the cube. With a two tone solid and void relationship, the open areas are opened with 5.5m high glass whilst the exhibit areas are cladded with a sandstone finish. The large panels of sandstone are hand-cut Red Indian sandstone from Agra, India. The most amazing part of the glass is its ability to self support. The curvature of the glass omits the need for mullions. Each 1.8m glass panel is bent into an 'S' shape with 60cm facade zone. Do you like the balance of solid and void, curvalinear and rectalinear? . Architect: @neutelingsriedijkarchitects . Walter ‘Joe’ Gillespie is a graduate from the Architectural Technology program, class of 1988. As a high school student Joe knew he wanted to get an education but was not interested in a four-year degree. He wanted a degree that would prepare him for a job and Ranken fit the bill. “My education at Ranken was structured and taught me the work ethic that was desired by employers.” recalls Joe. “I knew from the time I was in fourth grade that I wanted to be an architect and that also influenced my decision to go to Ranken. Joe’s first job after graduation was at a small architecture firm in Edwardsville, IL that specialized in nursing and retirement homes. After 4 years at this firm, he took a job in civil engineering as a surveyor, where he worked for four years. Since then, he has been with the City of Highland, Il, for 27 years, where he started in construction inspection and design. He advanced to Engineering Technician, Assistant Director of Public Works and is now the Director of Public Works for the city of Highland. Joe is currently working on his degree in Civil Engineering. Find your career path at links in bio. #rankentech #civilengineering #architecturaltechnology
