#the mirror crack'd#agatha christie#agatha christie's the mirror crack'd#1980#guy hamilton#jonathan hales#barry sandler#angela lansbury#rock hudson#elizabeth taylor#geraldine chaplin#tony curtis#kim novak#edward fox#wendy morgan#charles gray#maureen bennett#richard pearson#eric dodson#margaret courtenay#opens with a fake film within the film�� a supposed creaky old bw Brit mystery thriller with an old dark house and a thunderous storm#outside and character actors par excellence assembled; it probably says a lot that this slightly wry pastiche is the most fun i had with#this film and I'd genuinely rather watch a full length version of that potboiler than this. the rest of the film is *fine* but almost#aggressively so‚ and a Christie adaptation with a cast this starry should be more than fine. stays true to the book in keeping Marple on#the periphery of the plot (faithful maybe‚ but questionable movie making practice) and gets a little muddled in the later stages#but Hudson is giving a great late stage performance and the witty‚ bitchy dialogue between Taylor and Novak frequently dazzles#Novak in particular is so clearly having an enormous amount of fun playing up the vain‚ backstabbing actor role that it almost overcomes#the flat direction and rather stodgy overall shape of the film. and i have to add i think it was pretty brave of Taylor to take a part#(boozy difficult superstar past her prime and slipping into insignificance) that could easily have been branded autobiographical#by the crueller among the press. this is a bit of a mess all told‚ and certainly underwhelming‚ but there's small joys to be found

#pendulums. quartz. and the most heart like at all: the balance assembly#every day i go to school and perform clock surgery#hey do u wanna hear an anecdote about baby haiz. of course u do#when i was a small child i saw an anatomical poster at a doctor's office and my mom had to explain what a heart was#at that time however. i believed doctors only had posters depicting illnesses and stuff on their walls#so when i later heard my own heart beat through my pillow late at night i panicked and woke up my mom about it#who reassured me this is normal and in fact necessary to keep me alive#so to answer the question yes ive always been this neurotic and anxious about my own mortality

Watching iwtv and expecting to associate Kol with either Armand or Lestat (loves of my life) when in fact, he’s Daniel Molloy (also love of my life)

Virginia Woolf was apparently no great admirer of Vita's literary#efforts and it's not hard to see why; there is a gulf in style between the cerebral‚ postmodern work Woolf was producing and this rather#cozy and sweet comedy of manners with a light moral touch. but it is very charming and i do find myself enjoying my time spent with this#story. quite a sweet thing all told

Thinking about how Trent ran into the Nein so early in the campaign and took a particular interest in Yasha after reading her mind.
How it’s only by sheer luck he didn’t meet Mollymauk instead. How it would be so easy to look into his lost memories and see that this colorful, happy little tiefling was the one who used to bring back powerful arcane relics for Vess—
Could you imagine the look on Caleb's face if he saw Trent refer to Molly as one of Vess' underlings? Someone foolish enough to cross a member of the Cerberus Assembly--someone who should still be dead and buried--
Anyway, what if animated Nein hinted at Molly's past being tied up in the Cerberus Assembly somehow, if we get just a glimpse of that--

head in my hands hal 9000 is not a robot... he's an artificial intelligence...
#if you really want brevity computer is also accurate i guess#you could concievably make an argument that due to controlling all the systems of the discovery and by some interpretations *being* the ship#he fulfills such robot criteria as performing complex automated tasks#however he was designed for neither one specific task nor fully automatic/remote controlled operation#(being a GENERAL artificial intelligence)#and thus is not a robot#also robots are associated with a degree of mobility whether a robot 'dog' or an assembly line arm#and the mobility offered by the discovery's propulsion has little versatility and can only affect the ship as a whole#umm if anyone else comes up with reasons hal could be considered a robot (by the merriam webster definition which i am using)#or if you have an alternate definition of robot you think is novel#i would be thrilled to engage with you#but for now i remain firm#2001 aso#aso#2001 a space odyssey
