there’s no one like David Lynch obviously, but if you’re feeling the loss and are a fan of surrealist filmmaking, I have some recommendations!

Cecilia Condit. A veteran of indie surrealism, you may be familiar with her echolalia-inducing viral work from the 80’s Possibly In Michigan. Her films have a stripped raw home-video aesthetic and feel both welcomingly intimate, and distantly dreamlike. Favourite piece: All About A Girl.

Ann Magnuson. Creator in the same vein as Cecilia but infinitely underrated. As in, less than a thousand subscribers. Musician filmmaker and dream tapestry weaver. Your strange aunt becomes a content creator. Favourite Piece: The Enchanted Forest.

Carter Amelia Davis. Mixed media animator who makes some of the grossest and most compelling nightmare fuel out there. Deeply enjoyable especially if you are a mentally ill internet poisoned nihilist like me. Favourite piece: Cave video 2.

Cyriak. Surrealist animator well known from the halcyon rage-comic days of the internet, you’re probably already familiar with his work. His stuff is pure audio-visual cacophony, no plot, just expertly crafted chaos, but hypnotic if you can stand the overstimulation. Watch his stuff high to instantly die. Favourite piece: Breakfast.

Micah Buzan. A surrealist/psychedelic animator/musician I will NEVER stop recommending. His experimentation with colour, form, sound and imagery is so earnest and expressive, and conveys a very specific kind of existential angst that any current/former sensitive teenager can appreciate. Favourite piece: The Thief.

Jack Stauber. You already know him so there’s really nothing to say. He is the GOAT of mixed media animation laser targeted at the scared traumatized baby in your brain. Favourite piece: New Normal.

Jack Stauber gets his signature degraded tape recording sounds and visuals using analog gear and then digitizing the results, which explains why the VHS look is a million times better than the obviously phony VHS filter that comes prepackaged with Adobe that shows up all over youtube nowadays, almost a weird rewriting of history as many younger people’s internal visualization of a VHS recording will be based off a cheap emulation rather than the actual thing. 

I realize this is a silly and hyper specific thing to care about, but it’s something I only recently learned that meant a lot to me and seemingly helped me understand part of what gives Jack’s work the aura of authenticity associated with the less polished look. It wasn’t manufactured, it was created that way, and little details like that stick out as important to me. You might not notice it immediately, but if you were able to remove the degradation from the tapes and if you had recorded these same songs in a professional studios with producers or recorded those same animations in 4k quality, much of the life and warmth and feeling of inherent longing for a time you weren’t even a part of would be stripped away, and those emotions getting evoked is a massive part of why Jack’s material works for me.  

In a larger context, it’s interesting to me how what are considered defects of any given medium at the time, are in hindsight the most charming and valuable thing about it. The needle drop, the hiss of a record, rolling the tape back before returning it, scratched dvds with wildly interactive menus, there is a magic to the tech we create that gets lost in translation, until suddenly it doesn’t. Suddenly you’re listening to a Mac Demarco record for the first time and noticing a strange quality to the sound, then you do a bit of research and discover it’s all in the analog gear he used instead of a digital audio workspace. All of this is not intended to be nostalgia porn, I’m not saying any medium is better than another, and to some degree it’s difficult not to be cynical about an aura of authenticity when it’s deliberately emulated rather than organically lived in, but at the end of the day what matters the most is the effect on the viewer or listener or reader, and that tangible emotional effect is what I’m talking about.

Jinx

Ghost and Pals, Will Wood and the Tapeworms, Mother Mother, Melanie Martinez, Corpse, Set It Off, Poppy Nightcore, Gorillaz, etc.

You know those really bad playlist for characters with like, extremely unfitting songs that have an abnormal amount of Mother Mother in them? Yeah. She's the one making those.

If it was a TikTok audio for a Danganronpa cosplayer in 2020 she probably has it on loop

Listens to shitty modern day Hyperpop and it sounds like ASS

She listened to a undertale fansong nightcore cover on her school Chromebook and it genuinely changed her life for the worst. She was on Wattpad with Angel with a Shotgun BLASTING through her skull candy earbuds she stole off of a kid.

She's never been to a concert and that's for everyone's sake. She would have the absolutely worst concert etiquette to ever exist.

Once she matures she becomes an IPC diehard. She is at a Juggalo concert with her shirt off throwing Fuego and probably getting pulled over after.

Vi

Twenty One Pilots, Hozier, Florence and The Machine, Weezer, The Smiths, Ghost, Rainbow Kitten Surprise, Queen, System of a Down, Nancy Sinatra, etc

She says she's not a big music fan and that she just listens to whatever's on the radio but that is a lie.

She's not normal about Florence and The Machine. Anytime she's about to have a breakdown she puts Dog Days Are Over on full blast inside her truck. She's been in the top percent of her listeners for 5 years straight now.

She listens to exclusively bands that a guy in a guitar store would brag about listening to saying they were totally indie and no one would know them. She owns a vinyl player. She's not as pretentious, but still.

Hozier is like, the one guy in all of history that she somewhat is attracted to. His music is a borderline religious experience. She went to one of his concerts with Ekko and cried so hard she got sick. As soon as they were in the hotel she chugged a bottle of honey whiskey and passed out. She has not been the same since.

She HATES Jinx's music with like, a genuine passion. She will smack Jinx's hand if she tries to change her music. they are fighting like rabid dogs for who gets the aux cord

Caitlyn

Taylor Swift, Chappel Roan, Mitski, Kate Bush, The Cardigans, The Crane Wives, Sabrina Carpenter. Billie Elish, etc

She's relatively normal about music. Most of the time she just has white noise on whenever she's working. However, if she needs to do a long drive or something and doesn't want to listen to the radio, she WILL be playing all of Taylor Swifts discography

Shes not a Swiftie, but she listens to it enough that she got Jayce into it. She's way more a fan of her older music though.

Most of the music she listens to sounds like breakup music. Like it's always weirdly somber and full of anguish. She will also occasionally listen to a song about family issues and clearly not be okay.

Again, not really a music fan. However, this has not stopped Jayce from seeing her in her car scream-crying to Good Luck Babe. He is so worried for her and she just acted so calm after.

She thinks Vi has such unique tastes and will end up growing to like a lot of Vi's music too. Disgusting. I think they kiss during a Hozier song playing and everyone thinks they're disgusting.

Ekko

Tyler The Creator, Gorillaz, Poor Mans Poison, Los Campesinos, The Oozes, Pavement, AJJ, The Front Bottoms, Jhariah, Jack Stauber, Djo, etc.

The only one with objectively good music tastes in the entirety of this group. He's the kind of person to genuinely mean it when he says he listens to everything. The only music he doesn't really love is modern country, but he fucks heavily with almost everything.

The only artist that's super consistent and someone he actively gets excited for when there's a new release is Tyler the Creator. He enjoys music as an art form rather than something to just listen to, and he loves Tyler's vision and how he makes it an experience.

He listens to a LOT of Legend of Zelda soundtracks. If his favorite video game has a soundtrack he will have that on loop for days. His Spotify Wrapped is consistently fucked because of this.

He took Vi to the Hozier concert because she kept asking and he got into Hozier before she did. He has a video of her drunk-crying in her hotel bed about it. It was genuinely such a magical experience for them both though.

He got Jinx into Gorillaz as a way to try and get her to like. better music. And it backfired so bad. He's the one pushing her to like ICP.

Jayce

Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo, Chappel Roan, Charli xcx, Doja Cat, Kesha, Lady Gaga, Ayesha Erotica, Shakira, P!NK. etc

Do NOT take away his basic white girl music he will DIE!!!!!! he will die SO BAD!!!!!

He got into Taylor Swift due to Caitlyn and now he's the bigger Swiftie. Genuinely has started collecting all her albums. He is so obsessed with her music it is a little concerning.

He will blast Juno by Sabrina Carpenter on full blast while working and it annoys the genuine fuck out of Viktor. He is not doing this to annoy him, he's trying to get Viktor to like his kind of music.

Vi has been begging him to listen to literally anything else. Viktor is also begging, but he's starting to give up.

He went to a Sabrina Carpenter concert with Mel and he ended up getting the fuzzy pink handcuffs and he will NEVER stop talking about it. He has them hanging on his wall alongside a picture of him on the screen.

Viktor

The Hoosiers, The Oh Hellos, American Murder Song, The Taxpayers, Poor Mans Poison, Orville Peck, Gene Aubrey, Johnny Cash, Hozier, etc

Again, objectively good music tastes. He tends to listen to old country or folk music. He likes a song that tells a story and has a lot of heart in it.

If you put modern day country on the radio he will die. If he has to listen to a "I LOVE BEER AND TRUCKS" song one more time he's going to throw himself onto the highway full speed. He despises that genre of music more than anything else on the entirety of this Earth.

He is also a huge Hozier fan, and has been since Take Me to Church blew up while he was in his religious guilt era. He went to the same concert as Vi but they didn't know they were there. He cried so hard at that concert he got sick. It was more than a religious experience for him.

He has been trying to get Jayce to listen to Orville Peck or Hozier for MONTHS. He's not allowed Jayce to play his music ever. It's working very slowly.

He thinks about Jayce while listening to Hozier and contemplates ending it all while Jayce is playing BRAT in the lab. Genuinely couldn't be a worse situation for him actually.

Mel

See, I know most will say she would have amazing music tastes but I can't agree. I don't think she cares. She listens to whatever is on the radio. Her Spotify Wrapped is consistently fucked because she uses her phone as a speaker at like parties or during long car rides.

She doesn't have a preference when it comes to music. Her liked playlist of songs is close to 500 and it's just whatever songs anyone has sent her. She will put it on shuffle and get Halls of Illusions by Insane Clown Posse back to back with fucking Someone New by Hozier. It's bad.

She is not paying attention to what she's listening to. She blocks it out so well that she can't really pay attention to it. If she's forced to pick music, it'll just be whatever Jayce has made her listen to in the past week and a half.

She went to a Sabrina Carpenter concert with Jayce purely because she saw all the videos and thought it would be fun. Her and Jayce were dorking out. She could not match his energy though, and she loves him so much but she is never going to a concert with him again.

Some rambles about my choices v

Alan: I saw this clip somewhere and it felt SO FITTING. Even the dog motif and the song fits. Al would 100% listen to Mitski. I wanted Alan to have a warm voice because he might appear intimidating from the outside, but once you talk to him (literally), he’s a sweet guy.

Samuel: Jack Stauber is one of my favorite artists and musicians and over time he started feeling fitting for Samu‘s voice lol. His laugh is also really fun

Charly: Her voice is supposed to be kinda squeaky and a bit “rough“ (idk how to explain it), and very energetic. A bit annoying, but also endearing lmao

Nathan: Neil’s music has impacted me SO MUCH and his work has influenced my ocs too, especially Nathan. Pretty much every song from Spirit Phone is on my Nathan playlist, the vibe of that album has influenced his character so much!! His voice is usually pretty calm, but can get pretty crazy when he’s breaking down emotionally (just like Neil’s)

Robin: He’s supposed to sound kinda young and immature (since he’s barely out of his teens himself), so this type of voice felt fitting. He struggles with the fact that people infantilize him and I wanted to portray that through the voice

Eva: relistened to The Mind Electric recently and this part just hit me with how fitting that voice would be so ig that’s her voice now lol

Beatrix: She would try to appear very calm, warm and welcoming to deceive others and win them over, but also condescending if that makes sense? I haven’t watched Steven Universe but from what I’ve heard White Diamond shares a bunch of similarities with Beatrix so!!

he lost his parents young to a religious burning and im gonna sound cliche as fuckkk but that was literally the moment his heart became a wound. after hes taken in by the good doctor he only knows how to love wholly, to care with everything he has, because that's way the good doctor did and damn it if that's not what shepherds gonna stand by. and that makes the wound easier to ignore. but I think, genuinely deep down, he fucking Hates it sometimes. not because hes ashamed of it or thinks its bad or anything but because its a baseline of Caring Hurts for shepherd. but he cant stop. he cant. and sometimes e wishes he could, just get Rid of all this pain he doesn't Need to bare, pain that can be placed on someone else. but he wont cause with out the distraction of easing others pain he realizes he is naturally hurt and he refuses to cross that bridge.* with the end of cos caring is literally all he has. if he wasn't so locked into helping everyone he would have crumpled like an empty can in a hydraulic press. i call it last resort explosive au and there's some rambling under the cut!

so basically, in this au artificer sacrifices themself to save their pups, throwing them away to give them some time to run. i just thought 'blue pup survives this, green pup survives that, what if they BOTH survive but at cost of their mother's life?' (definitely no negativity towards said aus bc i love them so much)

so grenade (green pup) in this experiences traumatic flashbacks because they were the only one to see the exact moment where artificer couldn't deflect an upcoming attack. blast (blue pup) didn't realize immediately because they never saw it happen, but now they're both forced to survive on their own, without their mother.

in this video they're supposed to be older in case it wasn't clear!

Explaining EVERY song on my c!owen playlist

PART ONE (tumblr only allows 30 images per post)

Firstly, the playlist . I made this playlist quite some time ago and in my humble opinion, every single song can be related to C!Owen from the Outsiders SMP. I've ordered them from 'early days', to 'reunion and post-reunion', number 21 showing the divide. Buckle up there's only 60 songs.

The Search- NF; War of Hearts - Ruelle; Solider, poet, king- The Oh Hellos

These are pretty obvious choices for the beginning of the playlist. They all canonically feature in Outsiders, specifically The Reunion. It wouldn't be a c!Owen playlist without these divas.

What are you willing to do to survive?- Alioof

One of the fan made Outsiders SMP songs. Not only does it encapsulate the entirety of the SMP, but also key points of Owen's character-"Unable to breathe, always on the attack. Praying that no one sees through your disguise"- This shows what Owen's like in the post-reunion episodes. It's greatly on point for a song released at the beginning of the SMP.

When Memories Snow- Mitski

This song portrays 'early days' C!Owen in my opinion. The opening lines of the second chorus- "And if I break could I go on break?"- this senitment is reminicent of how Owen spent his time slaving away protecting the wall. Truely this song really speaks to the "I quit" video. I feel that this song really shows how he could've been feeling during that very short era.

ARE WE STILL FRIENDS?- Tyler, the creator

This song is literally the aftermath of Apo revealing that he pulled the lever. Idk what else you want, it's literally just that.

Rolling in the Deep- Adele

This was the audio for my first EVER edit, which was unsurprisingly (considering my track record) a pie duo edit. I don't particularly view this song as a really C!Owen song, but I want it there for my own sanity.

Scott Street- Phoebe Bridgers

This song tbh is just very pie duo coded. The chorus of " Do you feel ashamed when you hear my name?" Literally screams pie duo, especially post- reunion. But we aren't at that point yet so it's more prison visit. It was also my 2 year Reunion edit, so it had to join the playlist

Easier- The Crane Wives

Easier really fits the era of Owen's character that this part of the playlist focuses on. He doesn't "care that [apo] pulled the lever" only that he was betrayed and lied to. Out of context I have so much to say about that omg. But yeah, lyrics like "and if I were not myself, would this be easier?" really push this view in my opinion.

The Deal- Mitski

The Deal is roughly around the time of the 'I quit' era of Owen's POV, just like the other Mitski song... weird... I feel that he relates to this song. At that point, he's tired, doesn't want to leave and his best friend just betrayed his trust. The chorus of "I want someone to take this soul I can't bear to keep it, I'd give it just to give and all I will take are the consequences, will somebody take this soul?" kinda pinpoints my view of c!Owen's mentality in this arc.

I don't like my mind- Mitski

Right, I'm seeing a pattern here. This song is ALSO about the 'I quit' arc. I feel that the lines of "With all its opinions about the things that I've done. So, yeah, I blast music loud and I work myself to the bone" really illustrates what he feels on guarding the maze for this long

Just Take My Wallet- Jack Stauber's Micropop

During one (I don't remember which one) Reunion anniversary, my friend @/ minjeungsno1fan suggested that i edit this song. Practically the song feels like the way c!Owen's character plays out, from "Your mama's crying for you", "Those times are echoing through me" and "What's the kindest way to say you took away my friend? What's the kindest way to say you took away my friend, my buddy? What's the kindest way to say the end?" He's going through everything, from his past to killing his own best friend. It also made me cry once that's important.

Class of 2013- Mitski

The idea of c!Owen and this song hit me deep (like a javelin whoa who said that?!) one night at like 2AM. We are told in 'Spill Your Guts' that C!Owen's mother isn't as intense as his father in hating the demons. The line of "Mom, am I still young? Can I dream for a few months more?" is one, soul destroying and two feels like something "maze!Owen" might say if he found out what he went onto do. Idk it came to me and it just NEEDED to be added to the playlist for maximum angst potential.

Safe Ship, Harbored- The Crane Wives

So, I have a absolute banger of an animatic to this song in my head. Like it's epic. Like the first part up until the chorus are of him guarding the maze entrance, "I am a safe ship, harbored. A safe ship, harbored. Losing all of my good years to the shallow water", and constantly staying and gatekeeping it. Then as we get to the rest of the song it transitions into him regaining his memories and killing the demons. Finally it comes to the meltdown in the second chorus, "Where does your faith fall? Where does your faith fall in me? Don't break the bottle, don't waste your blessings on me". No one trusts him anymore so the lyrics now fit. The final "I wasn't born a safe ship Someone wore me" is of c!Magic leaving him to die (yay!)

The Hand That Feeds- The Crane Wives

Like two years ago, I fully planned out an animatic to this song that i never actually made. This is the main reason it's here ngl. The line of "My papa was a howlin' man, traded in his youth. Sold his dreams and all of his days for the great American ruse" was the main driving point behind the idea.

I bet on losing dogs- Mitski

ok literally as I'm writing this section, it started playing what the freak. This song feels like C!Owen at practically any moment from the 'I lost my best friend' episode onwards. Nobody truly trusts him and are still kinda scared by him. These are evidenced by Owen's speech to Graecie on how there "is no leadership without respect and without respect, power is nothing" and that no one but Soup checked on him after he was stung. O Superman- Laurie Anderson

To be honest, this whole song feels very C!Owen, from the lines referring to the mother, "So hold me, Mom in your long arms" remind me of the times that C!Owen mentioning missing his mother. "I want to go home" comes to mind. But it can also be related to the darker sides of his character, such as through lines such as "Cause when love is gone, there's always justice. And when justice is gone, There's always force" and "This is the hand, the hand that takes".

Call Them Brothers- Regina Spektor and Only Son

i saw an edit that I cannot find to Call Them Brothers and it genuniely changed my life. omg this song is so pie duo. As we are inching towards Reunion territory, this verse feels VERY Reunion, "The hunt is on, everyone's chasing, everyone's chasing a shot. A shot rings out, nobody wants it, nobody wants it to stop" -That's literally the Reunion.

Night Shift- Lucy Dacus

This song kinda encapsulates the feelings behind the Fruit trio and C!Owen in my opinion. "You got a 9-to-5, so I'll take the night shift" just really feels like the amoninity between the trio, especially after the fallout of the levers and especially post-reunion. God they're so tragic.

Just For Once- Starkid, Lauren Lopez

The whole song gives off the feeling of someone tired. Obivously in the song it's referring to a middle-aged woman but c!owen'a practically there so it fits. The last few lines really hit home, and I in fact made an animatic to it a while ago. "The other day the Johnsons borrowed my tap shoes, their eldest daughter is beginning tap. It was no bother, I never ever use them. I used to dance" really feels like someone who has lost their touch with something they once loved, in this case, c!Owen and his weapons as he buries them the episode before the reunion in hopes to get things to go back to the way things were.

Allies or Enemies- The Crane Wives

This song marks the turn into The Reunion and post-reunion songs in the playlist. This song is the one used for my one year anniversary of the reunion edit, I think it really suits c!Owen because of it's context if used with the reunion. The chorus of "Are we allies or enemies? This will be the death of me, this will be the death of me. All is fair in love and war, but I can’t fight with you anymore" really sums up the reunion conflict between C!Apo and C!Owen. They were best of friends and yet because C!Owen cannot set aside his prejudice, he kills Apo.

Anything Else But You- The Moldy Peaches

There's really only one line in this song that relates to this playlist, but I like it and I make the rules. The line of "The pebbles forgive me, the trees forgive me. So why can't, you forgive me?" feels like the conflict within the reunion.

One of the edits I made of the reunion uses this song, specifically the repeated outro of "I know it's for the better, know it's for the better". The idea behind the edit was that a full stop and comma would be used after every "know it's for the better". The full stop represented C!Owen and his refusal to move on from his past and his want to break down his friendship with C!Apo. Whereas the comma represents C!Apo and his want to leave the past behind and just go back to the clearing as friends. Sad times, sorry to Darcy who I still reference this edit to cause it killed her xoxo.

Take Me To War [LIVE]- The Crane Wives

Are you kidding? This song is SO c!Owen! The whole song just feels like solider Owen, the one we saw at the peace treaty. And it includes this pre-chorus, "All of the fire I've swallowed, all of the sparks that went dark in my gut, I am always burning up" cause you know. Meltdown. ha.

I'm Your Man- Mitski

Woah this album hates to see me coming. There is also a five minute video of me sitting in a Cafe Nero explaining how incredibly Reunion coded this song is somewhere, I'll try find this video but let you know it's crazy. Anyways this song is so Pie Duo coded, the first half is C!Apo betraying c!Owen with the whole lever fiasco, "You believe me like a god. I destroy you like I am". However when it gets to the second chorus the betrayer has become the betrayed. The line of "Others were never to blame after all" feels like something c!Owen would mockingly say. Stay tuned, this song is also going to be my 3 year Reunion anniversary edit.

Vampire Empire- Big Thief

this song doesn't really correlate too much with c!Owen lyrically. I more associate it with him vibes wise. I also used it for an edit once, that's the main reason it's on here. However, the line of "I am empty 'til she fills, alive until she kills" and the third verse of the well know "well i walked into your dagger for the last time...". really feels like the relationship between c!apo and c!owen, especially at the reunion.

Real Men- Mitski

I feel that this song encapsulates the feelings C!Owen has about his past, probably seeing his more naive self (both in the maze and before his district burnt down). The second verse of "Little boys cry and look around for comfort and always get what they want, little boys see toys and say 'I can take that!' Oh, you are my little boy" really seems to fit C!Owen's character. The idea of him 'taking' what he wants- aka the lives of the demons- is very fitting to his character. Whilst he doesn't expect the demons to unexpectedly drop down dead, he ultimately wouldn't be against this happening (this can be seen when he's talking to himself about how to kill Krow and he suggests just slitting it's throat.).

Circus- Lindsay Mendez and Drew Gasparini

This song is VERY c!owen, although obviously excluding the romantic subplot that comes in three verse in. The way the song talks about the victims, "Just close your eyes and be lucky that I found you. No one will know. Okay, here goes, It's easy as 1... 2... 3!", "Good afternoon, miss, you are my second victim. First one was trouble, not to worry 'cause I fixed him" are very reminiscent of how c!owen killed both c!apo and c!guts. Overall it fits the plotting and scheming of C!Owen from 'Spill Your Guts' to 'Tooth and Nail'.

The Garden- The Crane Wives

The garden feels very much like the time when c!owen was plotting the demons demise. The repetition of "the crows" both "laughing at my expense" and "they have their pound of flesh" kinda reflects c!owens plotting towards C!krow. Originally he has no idea how to kill it, hence the "laughing". Then later, in the fight with krow, he's literally scarred by it. The Garden also features the lyrics of "the devil knows my name" and boy do those demons know his name, hell it was used as propaganda in the human-demon war! "Won't you cut down that apple tree for me?" is also a fun added bonus.

Down the River- The Crane Wives

The original meaning of Down The River really does fit C!Owen, especially with all the lying he does when trying to locate items or information to use against the demons. He does not want to take responsibility for his actions and the consequences of what he did, saying he 'deserved to die in battle' . The lyrics of "Sure, you can forget about all the things you've done. But what about the rest of us?" feels like how he attempts to manipulate C!Magic to let him out of the cell before he dies, although failing due to his previous demon-killing actions.
