Luca has an avid curiosity (which often gets them into trouble) and is fascinated by how the world works — in every possible universe, they would have found out about the vampires in Crimson Beech.

Has no problem biting ice cream, but sometimes sensory things ( unexplained sticky hands, clothes textures that feel suddenly wrong) with make them explode with sudden rage that comes on fast and goes away even faster. (It always alarms Gabriel whenever it happens. He tries to help and inevitably gets in the way and makes it worse. Cas knows to just ignore him when he’s having a moment.)

Luca's first crush was Howl Pendragon of Studio Ghibli's Howl's Moving Castle

He takes his tea/coffee without milk bc he’s forever forgetting to drink it — there is always a small army of half-full, forgotten cups and mugs around his room.

Luca has had a habit since childhood where, any time they are walking alone through a forest, they’ll slow their pace and hum a gentle tune, trying to see if they can catch sight of any fairies or little fae creatures out of the corner of their eye. (Which seemed like a silly superstition until a few months ago, but now that they know vampires are real? Hey, maybe little Luca was on to something.)

Education (Scotland)

Rather than traditional schooling, Luca attended a specialised Arts school from the age of 14, in their hometown of Inverness, Scotland. Avalon Academy of the Arts is an alternative educational institution, covering both secondary- and tertiary-level studies in fields such as traditional arts and media, photography, music, theatre, and dance.

At Avalon, Luca trained primarily in ballet, lyrical jazz, contemporary, jazz funk, street dance, and urban hip-hop. Luca does enjoy ballet, but he found most of the ballet students too pretentious, cut-throat, and close-minded to consider pursuing a career in ballet long-term (especially as a non-binary dancer in an extremely gendered environment).

Luca’s main dance style tends toward a unique blend of lyrical, ballet, and street — though in recent years, there is definitely something of a K-Pop influence present in their choreography. They idolise Lee Taemin of SHINee, in part because of his expression and technical precision, but also because of the androgyny and power of Taemin’s dance style. They enjoy watching dance practice videos on YouTube in order to study other dancer’s body lines, transitions, and use of tension.

Education (USA)

In transferring to Crimson Beech High to round out their formal education, it became clear that Luca was very behind in some areas (math, physics, sciences) and very ahead in others (history, literature, anything pertaining to arts studies).

The semesters at Avalon do not align with traditional US schooling system (beginning in February and wrapping up in December to mirror their sister school in Avalon, Australia), so Luca is actually marginally older than many of his current classmates at Crimson Beech High.

(well. Those that aren’t vampires, anyway).

As at the first chapter of ID/SICSIG, Luca is 18, and will be turning 19 in January.

Hobbies

Luca could have taken music as an elective at Avalon, but he never did. Music is something that is purely for self expression and fun. While he did take drum lessons for about a year as a child, most of Luca’s musical ability comes from the school of fucking around and finding out — he is a kinaesthetic learner, so much of his drumming is self-taught.

Wayne (read: awful person) never really approved of Luca’s dancing and wanted them to quit when they first started taking lessons in primary school, but Terri put her foot down when she saw how happy it made them to have a form of self-expression that really spoke to who they were. As a means of compromise, Wayne suggested Luca take up drumming — something he saw as a suitably “masculine” hobby to “help him man up”.

A lot of the arguments Wayne and Terri had regarding Luca’s hobbies in their formative years were, in truth, veiled conversations about Luca’s sexuality and gender identity. Terri has never been anything but accepting of her child, and Wayne has never been able to get his head out of his own ass around Luca being gay, let alone non-binary. Though Terri tried to shield them from it, Luca often bore the burnt of a tirade of queerphobic verbal abuse, which escalated to physical violence in the years preceding Wayne and Terri’s separation.

There were a whole host of reasons why the O’Rinn household wasn’t the easiest or safest place to be growing up (which I have explored more in Starlight!); understandably, Luca had a lot of energy (and, in the years before Wayne’s arrest, a lot of anger) that he was able to take out on his drum kit.

Drumming on his own has turned into a really therapeutic space for Luca, wherein he can get into a flow state, lose the outside world, and work through a lot of his feelings. As much as Luca despises his father, he loves his drums — and knowing his father was the one to buy him his first ever drum kit is something of a sore spot. To this day, Luca still has mixed feelings about it.

Drumming with Viktor’s band, however, became a space of growth and celebration. Your Bisexual Awakening (as they are currently called — the band's name changes with almost every gig) is made up of other students from Avalon, and is unapologetically queer and in your face about it. They mostly play classic rock, punk, and grunge tracks, but ultimately do not limit themselves by genre.

Viktor, the band’s vocalist and frontman, is an OC (and will probably get his own "Meet My OC" profile!) (eventually); the other band members are Easter Eggs from other Choices books: WtD’s Angel on bass, NB’s Cal on keys, and ILITW’s Ava on lead electric guitar.

BRIEF BACKSTORY:

casey was born in portland, oregon, to sean and grace ivers. their father, being a truck driver, spend considerable amount of time away from home. therefore casey was mostly raised by their mother, who has been working as a social worker all her life, trying to help those that were in need. 

even in cas’ early childhood it was apparent that sean’s income as a truck driver will not be enough to cover all family’s expenses. with a husband away from home for long periods of time, grace struggled to make the ends meet. 

casey grew to know responsibility early in their life as dedication to help their parents out and especially their mom pushed them through the early stages of their life. as a teenager, they had to juggle school with part-time jobs in various local stores, libraries and the like to bring in some extra cash to the table. they graduated high school with excellent grades, which was a crucial aspect of them later on securing a spot in the school of journalism and communication at oregon’s university. 

having seen the rough reality of life up close and thanks to their mom’s heartbreaking stories from her work, casey found their primary passion quite early in life. while grace was trying to help different individuals get back to their feet, casey’s goal was to bring these stories to the masses and reveal the truth of many unfortunate situations people were going through. 

they started out their career in news agency as a camera operator while building their photography related portfolio. as years went by, casey excelled in their field of work and became a junior photojournalist, providing high quality photographs of various stories the local news agency wanted to publish. 

during the recent years, they had picked up a few projects that required them to travel to different hostile locations within the states and on occasion, to several countries in europe and document the reality of life and death in battlefields of ongoing wars. although signing up for these projects was potentially dangerous, the stories that were prepared alongside casey’s documented footage, later proved to be quite successful, bringing the young photojournalist the amount of recognition casey had never dreamed of achieving. soon after a few articles of their success story were published in several online newspapers. as a result, the gateway to numerous different news agencies cracked open, allowing them to choose the stories they wanted to invest their time into and teams they’d preferred to be a part of. 

the years that followed with casey being a fresh independent photojournalist, they embarked on quite a few journeys, picking out countries and locations that spiked their interest. during one of those travels they met madeline avalon - a woman of their dreams. or so they thought in the course of their short-lived relationship. the pair had hit it off right away as mutual attraction had brought them together and what started from a spark of chemistry soon turned into something more serious, tangible. the development of feelings followed, only for everything to come crashing down when madeline did not show up for one of their dates. communication was cut short and it seemed as though the woman had never existed to begin with. that was one of the very rare instances in their life that casey had allowed themselves to get emotionally invested into somebody else. each time they did, the dynamics never seemed to be able to get off the ground, for one reason or another. so, after those few tries, casey has had enough of dating and decided to leave that aspect of their life locked away. 

now casey strives to bring injustices in the world to the surface with their documented footage, both by taking photographs or filming videos with a goal of shedding light on important matters that are usually overlooked or not discussed enough. achieving that purpose, though, required continuous traveling to locations that called out to them. thus, casey found themselves in avalon island, a place of great wonders. it was supposed to be a short vacation away from the constant chaos of their life, but with the passing days, it became apparent that perhaps this particular place could serve as something more than just a temporary stop to be checked off their never ending list of locations to visit. 

WANTED CONNECTIONS:

Best friend / ride or die – could’ve met literally anywhere thanks to cas’ constant traveling around. It was an instant connection which did not require additional work to be maintained. there is a strong sense of loyalty and trust between the two as they have helped each other through some challenging times in their life. the pair might have often been in separate locations due to casey’s hectic work schedule, however that had never stopped either of them from keeping the other one in the loop. one of the very few people who casey trusts with their life.

Casual friends – people casey met throughout their travels. could’ve been involved in one of their many projects.

Flings  – feelings are not their strongest suit and given their workaholic nature, there isn’t much space for anything else. however, there is a possibility for a few casual flings here and there.

Situationships – any connection that had/has the potential to become something more, but either never managed to properly get off the ground, one or both of them were unsure of how to approach it or it is still in its early stages. 

Rivals – fellow journalists they competed with in the past or are competing currently. once you are in the field, there is no coming second. It’s always about who got the best story, best photographs, got to the ‘hottest’ locations first. 

Mentee / younger sibling figure – although casey is an only child in the family, the ever persistent need to stand up for someone might steer them in certain situations with a potential to form a connection where they could apply their protective nature.

BIOGRAPHY

Avalon has never had much of a stable life. But stable is boring and she has always been okay with instability and chaos. Born to a young Scottish-born couple barely out of high school and able to take care of themselves; they simply were not ready to raise a child on their own. It was only by chance that the doorstep they dropped the newborn on belonged to a couple who couldn’t conceive a child of their own – or a stroke of luck one. They named her Avalon, rather fitting for a baby girl whose origins were much of a mystery – her birth parents never did leave a note, or any sign they existed.

The couple – Byron and Charity – raised young Avalon as if she was their biological child, ensuring she had only the best that they could afford for her. When it came time for her to start school only the best education would do. Little Ava was a quick study from the start, and even at such a young age her parents and peers could see her skill for the arts. Her work was posted on the fridge and around her room, and eventually as her talent grew her adopted parents began framing her art. As she grew older, art competitions became as important to her as schoolwork, and her parents supported her just as they always did. For a child, her life was perfect.

Ava had no way of knowing that when she reached puberty that she would learn that the perfect life was an illusion – a revelation that no young person deserved to learn. The day her powers began to manifest was the day her parents died; they perished in a fire that Avalon unwittingly started the first time she changed forms. The authorities declared the fire an accident, the result of wiring that had not been up to code upon the house’s construction that had gone bad. Now an orphan once again, Ava became a ward of the state and was put into the foster system.

For the next two years Ava was in and out of numerous foster homes, unable to integrate into the families who attempted to take her in due to her reckless nature and newfound rebelliousness. Despite her tumultuous living situation and the added strain of Metahuman abilities Avalon managed to keep her art as a constant, and even began to dabble in photography. Fortune, or God or some other higher power began to favor her again when she was taken in by another foster family, a well to-do married couple with two children. Again Ava was given only the best, and eventually she learned that her new family was just like her – Metahumans, each with a unique ability of their own.

Although her first adoptive parents gave her everything they could, this new family gave her even more; she felt accepted as well as cherished, and that gave her confidence and even a little arrogance. Ava learned how to control her abilities and grow in strength. With her foster brother’s help she learned she had a knack for computer technology that he taught her more about. She was still reckless and rebellious, but she had multiple outlets with which to dispel her restless energies. With her talent in art and good high school record, coupled with her foster parents’ generous funds Ava was permitted to attend the finest university for the arts in New York. Again, life seemed perfect. She never expected that her second family was just as temporary as her first, but when C.A.R.M.A. eventually came after the family they were unprepared. Having been home from college for the weekend and gone out with friends for the evening, Ava was not home when the agents killed her foster parents and taken her siblings.

With nowhere else to go, Ava took the money and cards, some of the technology, and some of her art supplies and left – she at least had somewhere to stay in her dorm while she lay low and recover. Throughout the rest of her college education Ava kept her powers secret to everyone, using her art and honing her computer skills to make money on the side. As soon as she graduated she made her way to Pansaw, knowing that was where the headquarters of C.A.R.M.A. called home. There she met back up with her friend Jaden Harkness, who’d become as much of a sister as her adopted one, and together they joined in with a group of other metahumans under the leadership of Uriel Zeriah to found the Nephilim, earning her place as Wrath alongside Jaden’s Pride. They created chaos on their own terms, making the Nephilim name one that was spoken in hushed whispers for fear of attracting their attention. They made no big moves though, not until their champion of Envy was grievously injured in an attack that set the Morningstar off and roused the Nephilim to retaliation.

Drunk on the god-like power boost give to her, Avalon contributed heavily to the fiery hellscape that Pansaw became. What she didn’t anticipate, what none of the Council of Sins anticipated, was that C.A.R.M.A. and the Rebel Army would actually ally together. No sooner had Avalon watched Uriel seemingly vaporize into nothingness that she retreated, her priority getting Jaden and bailing before their enemies caught up to them. Ava was shot out of the sky before she could get out of the city, though her body was never found and she was separated from Jaden. She has spent the last three years lying low, recovering from injuries that should have killed even her and working through Pansaw’s underbelly as a ghost. She has been biding her time, furthering both Jaden’s and her own agenda and waiting for the right time to make her next big wave.

POWERS

PHOENIX PHYSIOLOGY: The user can transform into a phoenix – a mythical, sacred fire bird that symbolizes rebirth, immortality, and renewal in the mythologies of the Arabians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, Chinese, Turks, Indians, and Phoenicians/Canaanites. A phoenix is described as a bird with colorful plumage and a tail of gold and scarlet (or purple, blue, and green according to some legends).

WEAKNESSES

User requires time to heal. User requires focus and practice to change back into her normal form. User could potentially burn something or someone she did not mean to burn. User is weak against water, and being hit with water could be harmful and possibly fatal. User is weak against and can be overpowered by Darkness Manipulation. Glass Manipulation and/or Reflection Manipulation bounces back light by a reflective surface. Gravity Manipulation bends light. Can be overpowered by higher level Photokinetics and Pyrokinetics. Requires training – control is extremely important and unconscious use can prove disastrous. Distance, amount of matter, and precision of ability depend on the strength and skill of the user. Oxygen must be present in order to use fire ability; if none is present a flame cannot be ignited. Fire Mimicry requires time and practice to control and change back. User is vulnerable to water and possibly ice, and being hit with water could extinguish flames and cause harm to the user.

Big Brother In The City Of Broad Shoulders

Big Brother — Featuring Janis Joplin

Big Brother & The Holding Company arrived in Chicago in the summer of 1967, not to record an album but to play a month-long engagement — four and five sets a night — at the Mother Blues night club in Old Town. It was the most we would ever play for such a concentrated period. We just kept getting better and better — tighter and tighter. Peter painted a sign for the stage with a large eyeball that read: Big Brother Is Watching You.

The Midwest hadn’t adjusted to hippies quite yet. Some nights we drew only five to ten people in a place that could hold a couple of hundred. One reviewer called us, “the ugliest band he had ever seen,” to which Janis blurted out, “Even Sam?” The same journalist also noted that we smelled bad. And we did. It was patchouli oil, whose aroma hadn’t made it across the Mississippi yet. Unfortunately, the club soon ran out of money and reneged on its promise to pay us.

That’s when we bumped into Bob Shad — owner of Mainstream Records — for the second time. He’d come out to San Francisco that spring to hear some hippie bands, we’d met him at the Old Spreckels mansion on Buena Vista in the Haight-Ashbury. After we auditioned, Shad asked us to record an album, but our manager, Chet Helms — Also running the Family Dog dances at the Avalon Ballroom — turned him down. That was the beginning of the split between Chet and us.

So there we were — two thousand miles from home and broke — when Bob Shad entered the picture once again and offered us a recording contract. We asked if we could get a lawyer to look over the paperwork, and he suggested we use his. So we did. Brilliant.

We were thrilled to do the album. Whenever Janis would think about it she would hop up and down on one foot and say, “What a hustle. We’re going to do something we love, and Bobby Shad is actually going to pay us, PAY US. Can you imagine, man?” We were all laughing with her, but we were secretly excited.

We recorded some of this material later at United Studios in Los Angeles. I remember seeing Glen Campbell working with members of Phil Spector’s Wrecking Crew: Leon Russell, Carol Kaye and Hal Blaine. Through those glass doors they seemed like office workers, sitting behind their instruments.

LA was fun, but those Chicago sessions were really special. We’d never been in the studio until then, and here we were in this strange city, about to record. Mainstream was a venerable jazz label that had fallen on hard times. Recording there had a very old school feel. Fortunately we’d had ample opportunity — thanks to our night club stay — to polish that rough Big Brother sound. The album sounds almost acoustic today, melodic folk-rock, so sweet and innocent. Below are some comments about the songs on the album.

“Bye, Bye Baby”: This was written by Powell St. John who was in the Waller Creek Boys in Austin with Janis. It was difficult at first to record this because it seemed so unlike us. The alternate version here has Janis’ vocal single-tracked.

“Light Is Faster Than Sound”: Since Peter Albin studied photography, thought this was about photography being faster than music. But Peter says no. When we recorded it, his lips were more rubbery than usual, his face stretching into all sorts of latex shapes. And when he began singing that “Whoa” bit during the bridge we all had to stop because we were laughing so hard.

“Call On Me”: Janis and I sang this ballad as a duet. We would act it out to each other while we were performing it. This is the first song I wrote for Big Brother.

“Women Is Losers”: Janis heard a tune called “Whores Is Funky” when she was down in Texas. She liked the grammar. We had at least three different arrangements for that tune.

“Coo Coo”: Sometimes known as “Jack of Diamonds,” this song is from Peter’s folk days. He played lead guitar here, and on stage it would really lift the band.

“Blindman”: This is an old spiritual that Peter redid. It really exemplifies that folk-rock sound we got on the Mainstream album.

“Down On Me”: I had a tape of this by a white gospel group from the 1930’s, while Janis owned another version from the 1950’s. James suggested we make it a bit more secular so it would sell to the general public.

“Caterpillar”: When I first suggested starting band with Peter, he thought we should go all over the world singing children’s songs. This was the first one he wrote. He had all kinds of different verses, such as: “I’m a Jimmy Dean sausage. Frying for your love.”

“All Is Loneliness”: This fellow named Moondog stood on New York Street corners selling song sheets he’d written. When we told him we did his song, he asked, “Do you do it in 5/4?” We answered: “Well, there are five of us and we do it in four.

Janis was in good spirits for these sessions. She double tracked her vocals on “Bye, Bye Baby” — a novelty to her — and we were pleased with how that came out. The guitar sound, however, was strictly out of the 1950’s. But we didn’t know how to ask for what we wanted. And the engineers at Mainstream — intent on keeping the VU meters from plunging into the red — weren’t going to volunteer any new techniques. Recording technicians would soon learn that some distortion was built into this music.

Those engineers at Mainstream were leery of working with us. They were accustomed to recording jazz — acoustic instruments and beautiful black voices-and we couldn’t have been more different. They were constantly telling us to turn down. It should have been no surprise we wound up sounding different from what we’d expected. I’ve come to appreciate the first album for what it is: a scrapbook of early Big Brother material. In the end, recording turned out to be just as scary as it was performing live for the first time. And when we left Chicago, we still didn’t have any money.

Film photography kept me going this year. It kept me curious and humble, and my hunger for a gorgeous shot led me to a lot of places I would never have seen otherwise.

I’m a writer first, but my words are something I have complete control over. As a perfectionist, this can drive me pretty mental at times; I could spend an eternity combing through a story or blog post changing this or that word and never feel done. While my perfectionist tendencies come out at the editing stage of film making (I don’t really edit my photos unless I have to alter exposure), there is an urgency about capturing a moment that will never come again, having limited film or space on your memory card. When you’re behind the lens, you are capturing something rather than manufacturing it. Even in a controlled shoot, you are still limited by time and tools. Writing can only be limited by your imagination, and while that’s freeing in some ways, it can be terrifying in others.

These visual mediums are creative outlets that allow me to follow my instincts without so much pressure to be perfect. I know I can’t control the weather or the set of someone’s teeth or whether they blink just as I’m pressing the shutter. It doesn’t mean I don’t strive to be better, and I would love to do some planned shoots next year, but I guess because I don’t define myself as a photographer or cinematographer it takes a lot of the pressure off to be revolutionary. I just do what feels right.

But enough about that.

I was going to choose ten photos overall, but that proved to be literally impossible. Instead I’ve chosen thirty overall, divided into three categories. The first is People.

One of my favourite things about taking up this hobby is the beautiful pictures I’ve snapped of my loved ones. I’ve always dreamed of taking photographs that captured the specific energy of a person or a moment, and when I look at these ones I feel like I’ve done that. These are photos I love of people I love.

This girl is a whirlwind in the best kind of way. Interested and interesting. Kind. Spontaneous. Ridiculously beautiful. She’s unlike anyone you’ve ever met; a girl who turns heads wherever she goes and knows it, who isn’t afraid to tell strange men that she’s the CEO of a radical feminist magazine and laughs at their feigned support (she doesn’t care what they think). That very magazine is how we met online; I became a regular contributor and she flattered me when we met in person by telling me that she’d told her workmates “If I fall off this ladder, the magazine goes to Holly Way!”

That night we went to a feminist zine launch that was definitely more of a gay 90s rave and I danced in a club for the first time in years. The photos I took were risky - the girls were dancing and the smoke was thick - but even the blurry ones have an energy to them that I love. Moving subjects will give you some duds, but so much more life in the good ones.

Connor was so bloody stoked with this view, and I feel so warm when I look at this photo and his huge, genuine smile.

If you want a glimpse of how much I - and the rest of my family - love Stuart you can watch this video I made for him for Christmas. Basically we had only met his British ass once before he moved into our house for twelve weeks. Luckily he turned out not to be a murderer but rather the most lovely, genuine, polite and cheerful dude you’ve ever met. It was devastating when he left - almost a month ago now - but the group chat is still going strong. More importantly, we’ll always have the memories of him reading us A Street Cat Named Bob on Squeaky Beach as the sun went down.

4. Rhiannon. Inverloch, Victoria, Australia. Minolta Dynax 500si. Kodak ULTRAMAX 400.

With the year we’ve had, it’s an indescribable pleasure to see my sister smiling and happy. On this particular day five of us drove to the coast, ate watermelon and baguettes on the beach and just escaped the rising tide at the end of a dusty pink dusk. On the way home we put on my ultimate sing alongs playlist and screeched Tribute and Bohemian Rhapsody at the top of our lungs. What could possibly be better?

The hour or two we had to ourselves at this outlandishly gorgeous dam are some of my favourite hours of all time. Stuart had a swim and gave us all heart attacks when he brushed up against a branch (thanks bitch) but other than that we were just so... relaxed. Climbing trees, eating, baking in the Aussie heat, telling dumb jokes and having Stuart read to us again. Then a bunch of bogans showed up with their dogs off the lead and disrupted the serenity, but whatever.

7. Beren. Cataract Gorge, Launceston, Tasmania, Australia. Minolta Dynax 500si. Kodak Portra 400.

This photo is from the first colour roll of film I ever shot. We surprised our family by showing up unexpectedly to celebrate Dad’s 50th and stayed for a few days. It was bittersweet as we had just lost our cat, Evie. It was a hard time, but spending those few days with our dad and siblings we rarely get to see made a difference, as did spending time in Tasmania, which has become a beautiful second home to me. I like the composition and natural feel of this photo, and just the fact that it’s one of my favourite people in one of my favourite places.

8. James. Red Wood Forest, Victoria, Australia. Minolta Dynax 500si. Kodak Portra 120.

I have a feeling this was either on or just after Easter, but I really can’t remember. Either way this place was absolutely magical. Even though this photo is blurry (the ISO of this film was not a good fit for a forest on a cloudy day) I just think it’s cool. I love getting action shots of people focusing on something, just natural and in their element. Watching James experiment with the camera has always been one of my favourite things to do. Also, he looks so fucking grown up in this picture.

9. Nienna. Tamar Wetlands, Launceston, Tasmania, Australia. Minolta Dynax 500si. Kodak Portra 120.

Definitely one of my favourite memories from this year; getting up before dawn to catch the sunrise at the wetlands with Dad and Nienna. It’s the kind of thing I’d do way more often if I had a car, as there’s something so beautiful about being at mercy to the cycles of the sun to get your photo. And we weren’t that lucky. It was overcast as hell and we got maybe a few minutes of a few slices of pink sunlight through the clouds. But that didn’t matter. We got photos that felt different than we expected and had a wonderful adventure in the meantime. To be separated from my sister so greatly in both years and distance but still manage to have such a strong bond and so much in common is something I am so, so grateful for.

10. Georgia. Home, Victoria, Australia. Minolta Dynax 500si. Kodak Portra 120.

This photograph makes me feel so many things. I grabbed it while Georgia was reading out a bit of her novel to Rhiannon and I, and it was just a moment that was so close and pure and poignant that I couldn’t help but try and capture it. That connection is what I treasure most about my relationship with Georgia. Ever since we were kids I feel like our bond has been free of judgement and pretense. She’s one of the few people I feel I can be all of my selves with instead of just choosing one suitable side to present. We don’t see each other nearly as much as we should, which makes moments like these all the more special.

Before this property became photographer Alexandrena Parker and carpenter Michael Riseley’s family home, it was a post office. Originally built in 1914, this post office served Beaconsfield Upper (located 45 kilometres south east of Melbourne’s CBD) for almost 100 years, doubling as a residence for much of that time. The floorplan was tailored to suit this dual purpose, with one large room functioning as the post office on one side, and a living quarters on the other.

The post office eventually moved locations, and when Alexandrena came across the property for sale near Mike’s family home, it had been unoccupied for years. Undeterred by its deteriorated state, Alexandrena became ‘obsessed’ after peeking through the windows, and purchased the property at auction the following week when Mike was at work! ‘Mike was in shock when he realised how much work he had in front of him to get us actually living there!’ she says.

Indeed, bringing the property to a liveable standard was no easy feat! At the time of purchasing, the building had no kitchen or bathroom, just a small tea room with a toilet, and the entire right hand side of the property was one 12-metre long room with no dividing walls. Fortunately, Mike was able to undertake the renovations himself, adding a new 30 square metre extension, and building all the necessary walls to delineate the main bedroom, en suite, main bathroom and Ruby’s bedroom.

One major challenge the couple faced was retaining original features of the home, whilst making the necessary updates for heating, cooling and energy efficiency. This was particularly important, as the property has no gas connection, and the family is unable to use a fireplace due to Alexandrena’s cystic fibrosis. ‘Whilst we love the old charm about the house, it wasn’t always practical to keep all the original wall panelling, because it didn’t have any insulation,’ Alexandrena says. ‘It was a constant balancing act to pay homage to the house, whilst making it as practical as possible.’ Some elements of the original property, such as the hallway, flooring and windows were retained, but the majority of the home today is new construction.

Dulux Lexicon Quarter was selected as the primary white paint colour throughout the home, for its cool undertones. ‘Our Baltic floors throw a lot of yellow, so I used Dulux Lexicon Quarter to add a cooler tone to the walls so they balance each other out,’ explains Alexandrena. ‘I try and complement these neutral tones with furnishings, textures and artwork that is really meaningful and sentimental to us as a family.’ 

An exception to this otherwise pared back aesthetic is Ruby’s room, which was designed with the help of Hide and Sleep interiors. ‘I wanted to have a bit of fun with Ruby’s room and make it a very memorable room for her. She’s only young once so I wanted it to feel like it was magical and playful,’ says Alexandrena.

It’s been almost 200 days since this family entered lockdown, and despite its challenges, the trio has managed to experience many special moments together, and are especially appreciative of their home’s natural surroundings. ‘We love the huge trees in our area, and the fact that there are often four to five kookaburras along with king parrots and rosellas on our back deck,’ Alexandrena says. 

Having been unable to work for the majority of this year, Alexandrena has started an online print shop where you can purchase some of her beautiful photographs – and Michael is taking furniture commissions, too!
