“What are you doing here?” Darcy asked, frowning as she leaned in her doorway.

“Wade sent me. Said you had some shelf or something you needed help putting together?”

Axel wasn’t exactly the person she’d expected Wade to send, but she was secretly glad that Wade himself hadn’t come to offer his help. He was kind of bad at these ikea shelves. Not that she was much better, hence the need for a master Ikea carpenter.

Also Axel was eye candy. To her. So thank you, Wade.

“Okay, well... thanks. I can feed you.” He frowned. “In payment,” she reiterated, only for Axel’s frown to deepen. “Unless you’d rather I just gave you cash?”

“You don’t have to give me anything,” he said. “I’m helping you because I want to. Not because I need pocket money.”

Her face went red hot as she stepped out of the way so he could come inside. “Sorry, I didn’t mean--- I just figured you were doing a favor for Wade and I didn’t want you to waste your time.”

“Why would it be a waste of time?” he asked, reaching back to tug his hoodie off and rucking up his t-shirt in the process. “Thought we were friends.”

“I mean, yeah we are. I... because... I dunno, I’m rambling to delay the inevitable...”

The inevitable being when he saw the state of her living room. When she called him eye candy, she wasn’t kidding, but the crush went a little deeper than that. It went to the point where she was embarrassed to explain exactly why her living room looked like that.

“Whoa,” he said, folding his hoodie in half and looking around the bare room. “Your boyfriend rob you when he left?”

She exhaled, shaking her head. “No. I wanted the bedroom furniture, so he took everything out here... I---I let him take it. No robbery necessary.”

He looked surprised. “Oh, I just kind of assumed all that stuff was yours. Didn’t look like the kind of guy who’d own a purple couch.”

She snickered. “He wasn’t. It was all mine. I just... I let him take it because, I don’t know. I was probably going to get rid of it anyway. I mean... it’s just stuff, right?”

She could feel Axel’s eyes on her, and she hoped like hell he wouldn’t say anything more on the subject, because it was sensitive. And inherently linked to her aforementioned crush turned more on a certain acid-puking mutant who was currently present.

“If it’s something you wanted, you could have kept it.”

“Yeah, but I felt bad. Because like... he didn’t have anything and he was moving in with a friend and... and then I found out he wasn’t moving in with a friend, he was moving in with the skank he cheated with, so now she’s got my purple couch and all my cool end tables and I have to go to Ikea to get sad single person crap because it’s going to take time for me to accumulate more stuff and I just...” She inhaled and exhaled again, loudly, closing her eyes and shaking her head. “She’s not a skank. She had no idea he was with me. I’m projecting my anger onto her because I can’t be mad at him and I don’t know why.”

That was a lie. She knew why.

“You still have feelings for him,” Axel replied, moving over to the first of the boxes and pulling a pocket knife out of his back pocket. He unfolded it and cut the tape. “I mean, I would assume. I’m not a shrink or anything.” He folded it back up and stuck it where he got it.

“I don’t though,” she said. And maybe she just imagined the sudden look of interest on his face, but she went with it. “I actually haven’t for a while, I was just too chicken-shit to leave him and now I’m mad because he beat me to it. And I guess that’s why I let him have the stuff. Because I felt that... subconsciously... he knew I stopped feeling anything for him and that’s why he cheated.”

Axel snorted derisively. “No. He cheated because he’s a piece of garbage. You stopped feeling for him because you---to use your own word---subconsciously knew that.” He pulled what was inside the box out onto the floor. “Now, if you’re through dissecting your shitty ex-relationship, get over here and help me with this.”

Darcy smiled a little and sat down beside him.

“You don’t wanna know the real reason I fell out of like with him?”

“You could make me a happy camper and tell me his dick wasn’t big enough.” He smirked in her direction and made a grab for the little bag of hardware that came with the shelf pieces.

“I don’t really care about that.”

“Okay, then I don’t want to know, because this isn’t eighth grade lunch and I don’t have a science test later.”

“Suit yourself,” she said, sniffing as she reached for the instructions.

“You’re not going to tell me anyway?” he asked.

“Nope. Because this isn’t eighth---“

“Just tell me, Darce.”

Her face flushed as she peered into the direction booklet like it was super interesting or something she could actually decipher. “Maybe fell in like with someone else.”

He was silent for a long moment, lining up the pieces. “Someone I know?”

“Yeah.”

“How well do I know them?” he asked.

“I dunno. Depends. To use your words, I’m not a shrink or anything.”

“Oh,” he said. And that was all he said. But he didn’t talk a ton either, so Darcy didn’t really worry about it.

That was a lie, she totally did. But when she worried, she worked, and that seemed to help matters in reference to her pile of ikea boxes.

Between the two of them, they got both coffee tables put together, and the biggest of the bookcases before Axel’s stomach growled and she jumped so much that she dropped two of the loose shelves on the floor with a loud crack.

He turned towards her. “Jumpy much?”

“Yeah? You would be too if I notoriously puke flesh burning acid and my stomach started making sounds.”

“I’m hungry,” he said in way of explanation.

“I said I’d feed you.”

He shook his head. “Nah. I’ll feed you. There’s this pizza place near here.”

“They deliver?” she asked.

“Yeah, but we’re just gonna go eat in,” he said, reaching for his hoodie.

“Not sure if we have time for that...”

He tugged it over his head. “We do. And you look like you could use a nice gesture.”

“Is that all it is?” she asked, slipping on her shoes.

“Depends,” he replied.

“Depends on what?”

“On if you’re actually upset over losing the furniture, or losing the guy who took it.”

“I freaking loved that couch, Axe. You know that.”

He smiled then. “Then no. That’s not all this is.”

“Okay,” she said. “Good.”

“Good?”

“Good.”

He nodded. “Good.”

Okay so assorted thoughts on Thor: Love and Thunder because the person I saw it with doesn't want to hear it lmao

Right out of the gate: that little girl is Galactus. She is the wish from Eternity, and its original form was his silhouette. Change my mind.

Also way to see Thor adopt a kid. His character growth throughout the entire MCU is probably my favourite arc. We see him start as a child, and now he has one

When do we get to see Loki be a weird uncle

The colour and lighting was absolutely gorgeous, I'm immediately seeing technical awards in the future

You can always rely on Taika Waititi to give us the gay content we're looking for

Dwayne x Korg is the best thing to come out of this movie

While I'm sad about it, I think Jane's role in this movie was fitting. Not just as a plot device for Thor, but as her own character. She did everything she could for Earth, and she did not want to go down without a fight. (Though I think a little more could've been done for her agency-wise)

They should've had Thor call Jane Mighty Thor first, not Valkyrie

Also wanted to see more Valkyrie and Jane being besties

I'm a slut for everything Russel Crowe is in, I love him so much

But yeah he did a great job as Zeus because Zeus is a freaking monster

The rep for all of the gods in Omnipotent City was amazing

I worship Bao now

I probably would've gotten really emotional at the end if I weren't freaking out over Galactus

"Everywhere they go, they're known as Love and Thunder," awwwwww

The story was very well done, probably the most satisfying one post-Endgame (with a possible exception of No Way Home)

Prolonged Butt

I can't wait for all the fanfiction for this

The Darryl cameo gave me life

I love that they glossed over the Warriors Three, but have established that Sif is a major player in New Asgard

This did a lot of world building for Asgard despite them being on Earth, I feel like I understand their society better

All in all, this film was very explicitly reinventing Thor for upcoming stories, leaving everything from his past (i.e. Jane) behind and giving him newer parts (i.e. Axel) without unceremoniously throwing it all away

The character growth of Thor is stunning, I'm excited to see where he goes next

I had fun, but not necessarily as much as Ragnarok

Mmmmmm 7.5/10 movie, four for you Taika, you go Taika

Also why the fuck did Chris Pratt need a personal hair stylist AND make up artist for 10 minutes of screen time, I don't think the other Guardians did though I could be wrong as I only skimmed the credits

The roster’s updated; ring names pinned to the front of the SR as sign up slips make their way into waiting hands. Most are voluntary, nobody questions when a couple of slips come in from a single person, an entry is an entry.

The slots are filled quickly, name after name streams in and the chosen champions give themselves a few days to prepare, every behind the scenes arrangement is made and on SRS day, the champions find that they’re treated like royalty. There’s unfamiliar faces leading those nominated to decorated tunnels that surround the sandy ring itself. An armoury offered with the exact amount of requested equipment – large trunks with the champions’ names are found as the weapons housing.

Inside, the order of events –

Before it can be read, a rumble from the Slaughter Ring’s caves has everyone looking up, for a moment, it’s mistaken as the crowd outside roaring and jeering to see blood. It still could be, the energy of the Slaughter Ring carries right across the North; one of the most anticipated events of the year always brings the crowds. But this rumbling is closer, like a train reverberating up the tunnels at an unrelenting speed.

Some of those with more adept senses are already backing out of the armoury – shaken for just a moment before there’s an echoing whisper that reaches the champion’s ears:

“Here’s your warm-up before the first round, champions.”

And the Southside ceiling collapses, no chance to process the recognisable tone when the competitors are finding any exit they can as rocks from above threaten to come down and crush them; jagged, purposeful chunks of stone that intend to do a little more than harm.

As fast as it comes, its over.

If adrenaline wasn’t already running through the veins of every champion, it certainly is now; glances are thrown suspiciously in every direction, most are looking for those who didn’t make it out; there’s less bodies standing there in the wings of the ring. SRS organisers are near enough rushing at them, checking for casualties, ushering the designated groups to their private wings organised in factions before they are to put feet on the sand.

Everyone that’s still holding their match roster notices – as if by magic, those missing and likely beneath the rubble of the armoury are also absent the fight line-up. (It doesn’t take a genius to work out how organised a sabotage it had been.) Everyone has their own theories; perhaps an eradication of those districts attempting to put additional champions in their ranks, though, something darker sits in the minds of some where they swear they’ve heard the ghost-like voice before.

There’s eight names struck out; casualties before even the SRS has begun. Most bring the champion count down from the usual four and at a slight disadvantage as a group – however two names stand out above the rest; if only for their notoriety:

Prince Quintus “The Pirate” Zander of the Forgotten and Tranterdor ‘Troy’ “The Lover Man” Dazzoth of the Dominion.

Mourning isn’t an agenda within the Slaughter Ring and its likely that their names would be announced as losses at the end of the SRS. Only the Champions seem to be aware of the tragic accident that sets up the Slasher for a questionable start.

Another voice cuts through the Slaughter Ring, this time, from overhead speakers:

Welcome to the one-hundred and twenty-first Slaughter Ring Slasher, citizens of Calamity. We apologise for the delay, but Round One shall begin shortly, above you you’ll find the line-up, alongside the standings for how each Champion is pitted; we promised you blood; we always deliver.

A pause, a shuffle on the speakers, before:

There has been a slight change to the Champions, but nothing to worry about, the Knockout’s will commence forthwith. [END] Static silences the voice.

Tradition stands; the Knockouts, a head-to-head, show of strength that acts as an opener – one rule; get your opponent to concede, if they don’t, then knockout is putting it kindly.

Bring on the blood.

The names are called in order, I - XVI and is the fastest way to determine who makes it to Round Two. The Crowds are cheering and the Champions who didn’t sign themselves up to begin with are less than happy about the forced participation since their names are already plastered bold across the callboard.

Bets are being placed; Kochba is being slid into all the conman’s hands and wars have every ability to be waged on the sands. The losses earlier in the night sit unpleasant in the back of the Champion’s minds, a strange occurrence that reminds how dangerous the SRS is; how easy life can be taken, even for immortals. There’s no way someone in the ring planned the sabotage; cheating their way to victory this year?

Eradicating the competition and leaving district representatives short Champions; less to defeat, but those who were there, know that everyone in the backrooms were accounted for; as at equal risk; suicidal to cave a room in with those responsible within it, surely?

The SRS is only fun, right, Champions?

Better get ready to R U M B L E....

ADMIN NOTE: SRS day is HERE. Everyone who wants to be is gathered in the Slaughter Ring; the ringside seats are packed, there’s bustling from every angle, all trying to get the best view of the sandy ring itself, the Champions are in the wings preparing to watch; front row seats to their comrades and competitors fights. Heat and tension as the anticipation hits peak for them.

Champions can thread their fights, discuss in your pairs results or if you want that randomised too, please let us know, we’ll dice roll success/fails on hits/punches or whatever your pairing lead to! Or, you know, if your Champion retreats/runs and is deemed a coward. Whatever. ;) You can also thread being in the Champion wings with other Champs whilst you wait for your fight to go.

Then of course, everyone else in attendance can spectate, discuss around the ring, maybe ponder why the standings suddenly changed and names went missing dun dun dunnnn. But everyone will eventually notice that there is uneven champion reps due to the accident as they look at who’s left in the ring. This justifies why there’s extra champs in other districts... to you know... fill numbers... suspend your disbelief...

Bodyguard II: Familial Ties (Part II - Chapter 6) (Brendon Urie x Reader)

Cars, pick-up trucks and SUVs were parked all along the perimeter of the massive crater, the sounds of a boisterous party emanating from the pit. Inside, locals sat on lounge chairs, drinking beers from coolers as they laughed and talked, all the while watching the centre of the crater, where large men had formed a line to take a turn with the mysterious object embedded in the ground.

One by one the men attempted to lift it, struggling before eventually giving up and stepping aside to let the next one have a go at it, as other townies stood on the sidelines and snapped pictures with their phones.

They heard an approaching rumble, then cleared a path as a large pick-up truck backed its way down the crater’s edge. An eager townie hopped out the passenger side and pulled a thick chain down from the back of the truck. He fastened one end around the foreign object, then securely affixed the chain to the bumper and rear of the undercarriage.

“This’ll do it!” he yelled to the driver. “Okay, let ‘er rip!”

The townsfolk looked on as the pick-up’s engine roared, then strained, its wheels spinning futilely, until finally the rear of the truck along with the back wheels and axels broke off and went flying.

People dove out of the way, ducking down for safety as the pick-up driver stuck his head out of the window. The elderly man – with greyed hair styled back and aviator glasses on his face – looked back, shocked. A silent moment, then the townsfolk laughed as the party recommenced.

They didn’t notice as on the crater’s edge above them an imposing government vehicle pulled up to a stop. A man in a suit climbed out and peered down at the boisterous gathering below, his eyes fixed on the object at the centre of the crater.

Agent Coulson stared down at the object, which glowed with an otherworldly blue energy – Mjolnir. He pulled out his phone.

“Sir, we’ve found it.”

✧ ✧ ✧

S.H.I.E.L.D HQ. Washington, D.C.

“Good. We’ll move in immediately,” The Director spoke into his cellphone, pacing the length of his office toward the window overlooking the city; you stood behind the sofa, clutching the backrest with a tight grip as you kept your gaze steeled on your godfather, trying to listen as closely as you could, “I want a camp set up by sundown.”

Fury lowered the phone from his ear and disconnected the call, turning around to look at you. He raised one brow as he pocketed the device. “Looks like your cousin brought a little piece of home with him,” he chided, causing you to exhale loudly, “Any idea what it could be?”

“Are you forgetting that I didn’t know shit about Asgard until last year? I have no idea how things work over there,” you sassed, pursing your lips and lifting your hands from the backrest. “My guess is as good as anybody’s. It could literally be anything.”

Choosing to ignore the subtle jabs at himself and S.H.I.E.L.D hidden in your words, Fury folded his hands behind his back and raised his head a small amount.

“If I’m not mistaken – which I never am – Doctor Ross mentioned something about a… hammer?… that Thor never goes without. You think it could be that?”

Recalling the conversation that Fury was referring to, you nodded in agreement. “Mjolnir? Yeah, could be. I mean, he definitely wasn’t lugging around a hammer when we saw him, so it’s a possibility.”

“Guess we’ll find out soon enough.”

“Yeah,” you breathed out, stressfully combing your fingers through your tangled hair; you’d been so out of sorts lately that you’d even forgotten to brush the nest on your head that morning.

Picking up on your standoffish attitude, your godfather posed a question.

“What’s bugging you, sweetie?”

You’d expected that question to arise sooner or later, but your awareness didn’t dampen the arrival of it at all. Raising your brows, you slowly darted your eyes all around the room, shaking your head as you did so.

“I just…” you shrugged, “This is all too much. I can’t-“

With a small pant for air, you shut your eyes and held your head in your hands, which resulted in The Director hurrying forward to talk you down from any potential panic attacks that threatened to arise.

Letting him coax you out of your overwhelmed state, you took a seat on the sofa and rested your palms on your knees, leaning forward slightly.

“It’s been one major thing after another,” you remarked once he’d finished speaking, “My parents, Hydra, Brendon…” you trailed off, solemnly staring out of the window for a moment as your thoughts betrayed you by drifting off to your bodyguard; fortunately it only lasted a couple seconds, before you turned to face Fury, “And now this? Can’t I ever catch a break?”

“Welcome to my world,” he wheezed, placing a hand around your shoulders as he slinked into place next to you on the sofa. “But you’re strong, sweetie. One helluva survivor. You’ll make it through this – and any other pains in the ass that might come your way. But it’s no use hiding; this is something you gotta face, and you’re the only one who can do it – not for me, not for any of us, but for you.”

Your response didn’t come immediately; you allowed time for your godfather’s words to properly sink in and weave their way into your fragile mind. He was absolutely right about everything he had said, and you knew it, too. Which meant that you also knew that the first step in eradicating the problem you were faced with, was to contain it.

“We can’t let this go public, Uncle Nick,” you said carefully after a few minutes, giving him only the feeblest of glances.

“You’re telling me?” he scoffed, cocking the eyebrow above his one good eye, “Sweetie, why the hell do you think we’ve kept you a secret from everyone? Can you imagine the chaos it would cause? If the public found out that actual Norse gods were among us?”

Gently chewing on your bottom lip, you voiced your concern. “I’m afraid that there’re some people who are very close to finding out just that.”

Isabela’s Diner.

Thor, Selvig, Darcy, Aaron and Jane sat at a table in the local diner; the two doctors and the intern watched as Thor ate ravenously from a huge mound of steak and eggs. A couple other full plates – pancakes and biscuits and gravy – were piled high before the god. Jane sat eagerly, her notebook at the ready.

“Now tell us exactly what happened to you last night,” she interrogated.

Thor looked up and into her eyes, staring in intrigue. Jane became flustered and looked away.

“Maybe start with how you got inside that cloud,” she tried again, this time keeping her gaze slightly lowered.

“And how you could eat an entire box of Pop-Tarts and still be this hungry,” Darcy added, marvelling at the appetite of the man. Jane shot her a withering look, whole Thor downed an entire cup of coffee in one go.

“This drink,” Thor looked at the empty mug, “I like it.”

“Yeah, it’s great, isn’t it?” Darcy grinned. “Isabela makes the best coffee in town.”

Thor hurled the mug at the ground, shattering it into a hundred tiny porcelain pieces. “Another!” he demanded.

The ruckus captured the attention of Isabela, the diner’s proprietor, and she glared at Thor from behind the counter.

Jane turned to toss her an apologetic look. “Sorry, Izzy. Little accident.”

Isabela muttered something in Spanish as a response before turning to a waitress and venting quickly, also in Spanish. (“Did you see that? The first time she brings a man in here, and he’s a lunatic!”)

“What was that?” Jane demanded, gazing expectantly at Thor.

He didn’t understand.

“It was delicious,” he stated simply. “I want another.”

“Then you should just say so!”

“I just did!”

“I mean ask for it. Nicely.”

“I meant no disrespect.”

“All right, then no more smashing, deal?”

“You have my word.”

Satisfied, Jane leaned back and nodded once. “Good.”

A few townies, looking bedraggled, entered the diner and took a seat at the counter; they were amongst the men who had tried (and failed) to lift Mjolnir out of the crater. Isabela greeted them by name, and they ordered two coffees.

“You missed all the excitement out at the crater,” the one Izzy had called Jake spoke.

“What crater?” she frowned.

Aaron, Selvig and Jane overheard Jake’s words and after exchanging a look, all turned to the townies with interest.

“They’re saying some kind of satellite crashed in the desert,” the one named Pete explained.

“We were having a good time with it till the Feds showed up, chased us out,” Jake grumbled, slurping some coffee.

“Excuse me,” Jane interjected, “Did you say there was a satellite crash?”

“Yep,” Jake nodded, “They said it was radioactive. And I had my hands all over it.” Realisation dawned on him, then, and he looked down at his hands uneasily. “I’m probably sterile now…”

Thor, unconcerned, prepared to dig into the giant pile of pancakes. Darcy was amazed by the sight and whipped out her cellphone.

“Oh my god, this is going on Facebook. Smile!”

Thor looked puzzled as she snapped a photo of him and his massive stack of food.

“What did the satellite look like?” Aaron asked the townies; Jake answered.

“I don’t know nothing about satellites. But it was heavy. Real heavy. Nobody could lift it.”

This got Thor’s attention and he immediately sprung to his feet, headed over to drunk townie Jake and jerked him around to face him.

“Where?” the god demanded.

“About twelve miles east of here,” a slightly shaky Jake replied.

Thor grinned widely, his spirits soaring, as he quickly strode out of the diner. Once outside, he studied the position of the sun, gauging his bearings. The rest of the group caught up to him moments later.

“Where are you going?” Jane asked.

“Twelve miles east of here.” Thor started to stride down the street purposefully; Jane and Aaron walked after him.

“Why?” Aaron queried, picking up his pace a little bit.

“To get what belongs to me,” Thor said determinedly.

“So now you own a satellite?” Jane scoffed, tossing him a disbelieving look.

“It’s not what they say it is.”

“Whatever it is, the government seems to think it’s theirs. You intend to just walk in there and take it?”

“Yes.” Thor stopped walking. “If you take me there now, I’ll tell you everything you wish to know.”

Aaron perked up, the doctor in him coming out, and Jane did the same.

“Everything?”

“All the answers you seek will be yours, once I reclaim Mjolnir.”

Aaron sucked in a harsh breath at the mention of Mjolnir – fully aware of what Thor was talking about – as Darcy looked to the others, scrunching up her face. “’Myeu-muh?’ What’s ‘Myeu-muh’?”

Ignoring her, Jane studied Thor. He looked sincere and she was almost swayed to give into him, but then Selvig pulled her aside. Thor watched as the doctor spoke to Jane, and he could tell that Selvig didn’t care for him much.

With Darcy standing to the side and struggling with the new, Asgardian word and Jane and Selvig engaged in a heated discussion, Aaron took the opportunity to step up to the god.

“Mjolnir?” he spoke in a hushed tone, “As in your mythical hammer? It’s here?”

Thor nodded in confirmation. “It appears so.” The god narrowed his eyes and tilted his head as he observed the smaller man. “You seem to know quite a lot about Asgard, Aaron Jacobson.”

Aaron pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose and waved a hand. “I specialise in Asgardian mythology.”

“So you are able to help me retrieve Mjolnir!” Thor’s face lit up.

The doctor’s face dropped, and his eyes widened in panic. “What? No, no, no, I didn’t say that.”

“Why not?”

“Because you heard what the townie said,” Aaron gestured back at the diner, “The government has already claimed it.”

“Ah, so you are a coward.”

“What?! No! I just-“

“I’m sorry,” Jane cut him off, re-joining the conversation and focusing on Thor, “I can’t take you.”

Thor bowed his head slightly. “I understand. Then this is where we say goodbye.”

He took her hand and kissed it, making her entire body flush.

“That’s…” she started, “Thank you.”

The god looked to each of the members of the group and gave each a small bow. “Jane Foster… Erik Selvig… Aaron Jacobson… Darcy. Farewell.”

He turned and headed off down the street. Selvig breathed out, relieved. “Now…” the doctor said, “lets get back to the lab. We have work to do.”

He and Darcy started for the car and after stealing once last look at the strange man, Jane turned and join them, leaving Aaron to stare at the god as he walked down the street with a worrisome face, his gut feeling telling him that things were undoubtedly about to take a turn for the worst.

Hedda Hopper (1885-1966) was born Elda Furry in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. She was one of Hollywood's most powerful and influential columnists. She appeared on “I Love Lucy” and “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour.” Among her hundreds of films as an actress, she did two with Lucille Ball: Bunker Bean (1936) and That's Right – You're Wrong (1939). Hopper was best known for her flamboyant hats. She was also a well known conservative, Republican, and staunch supporter of blacklisting suspected communists. In films and television, Hedda Hopper has been portrayed by such actors as Fiona Shaw (RKO 281), Jane Alexander (Malice in Wonderland), Katherine Helmond (Liz: The Elizabeth Taylor Story), Helen Mirren (Trumbo), Tilda Swinton (Hail, Caesar!), and Judy Davis (“Feud”), to name a few.

Jerry Antes (uncredited) was an actor with the Desilu Workshop who also appeared with Lucille Ball and Hedda Hopper on the Christmas Day 1959 “Desilu Revue” presented as part of the “Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse.”

Lucille Ball (1911-89) was finishing her run as Lucy Ricardo with the final episode of “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour” airing in April 1960. She announced that she was divorcing Desi that very month.

John Barrymore (uncredited, archival footage)

Anne Bauchens (1882-1967) was Cecil B. DeMille's film editor for forty years. She won an Oscar in 1941. Bauchens edited Reap the Wild Wind (1943) and played herself in Sunset Boulevard (1950), just as Hopper did.

Stephen Boyd (1931-77) was an Irish-born actor best known for Ben Hur (1959), which won him a Golden Globe Award in 1960. In 1966 he played the leading role in The Oscar, which featured Hedda Hopper as herself.

Francis X. Bushman (1883-1966) was a silent film actor who received an honorary Golden Globe in 1960 as well as getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Coincidentally, Bushman played the same role as Stephen Boyd in the 1925 silent version of Ben Hur. Even more coincidental, Bushman was mentioned as Mrs. McGillicuddy's favorite movie stars in the same “I Love Lucy” episode that starred Hedda Hopper!

John Cassavetes (1929-89) was an actor and director who was then starring in the series “Johnny Staccato.” Later in his career, he was nominated for three Academy Awards.

Gary Cooper (1901-61) co-starred with Hedda Hopper in the 1927 films Wings and Children of Divorce, as well as the 1930 film The Stolen Jools. In 1942 he was featured in the third newsreel version of this TV special. In “Lucy Meets Harpo Marx” (1955) Lucy Ricardo dressed up in a Gary Cooper mask to fool her nearsighted friend Caroline Appleby. His name was also mentioned in two other episodes of “I Love Lucy.”

Ricardo Cortez (1900-77) was an actor / director who (like Bushman) got his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960. His final appearance was an episode of “Bonanza” which aired a week before this special.

Robert Cummings (1910-90) appeared on television with Hopper in “The Colgate Comedy Hour” (1955) and “Disneyland '59”, a celebration of the park's fifth anniversary. Cummings guest-starred in “The Ricardos Go To Japan” (1959, above) and on two episodes of “Here's Lucy.”

William H. Daniels (1901-70) was cameraman for 24 out of 26 of Greta Garbo's films.

Georgine Darcy (uncredited) was an actor with the Desilu Workshop who also appeared with Lucille Ball and Hedda Hopper on the Christmas Day 1959 “Desilu Revue” presented as part of the “Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse.”

Marion Davies (1897-1961) acted with Hopper in 1925's Zander the Great. This TV special marked the first filmed appearance by Davies since she had retired from the screen in 1937. It was also her last.

Walt Disney (1901-66) is the founder of Disney Motion Pictures and the Disney theme parks. He appeared on television with Hopper (and Bob Cummings) on “The Colgate Comedy Hour” (1955) and “Disneyland '59”, a celebration of the park's fifth anniversary. In 1956 he was on “The Ed Sullivan Show” with Lucille Ball.

Janet Gaynor (1906-84) won an Oscar in 1929. Between 1925 and 1930 she was in four films with Hedda Hopper. She was part of the group of 1960 recipients of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Bob Hope (1903-2003) and Hedda Hopper first worked together in the film Thanks for the Memory (1938), the title tune of which became Hope's theme song for the rest of his career. In addition, they were together in “Hedda Hopper's Hollywood #4” (1942), “The Colgate Comedy Hour” (1955), three episodes of “The Bob Hope Show” and the film The Oscar in 1966. Hope and Lucille Ball did four films together as well as episodes of both Lucy and Bob's television shows.

Hope Lange (1933-2003) appeared in a 1957 episode of “Playhouse 90” hosted by Hedda Hopper. She was nominated for an Oscar in 1958 for Peyton Place.

Mario Lanza (uncredited / voice only)

Harold Lloyd (1893-1971) was considered one of the great silent film clowns of film history. He directed Lucille Ball in A Girl, A Guy, and a Gob in 1943.

Harold Lloyd Jr. (uncredited) was the only son of Harold Lloyd. He died after a massive stroke at age 34.

Suzanne Lloyd (uncredited) is the granddaughter of Harold Lloyd. She became a film producer nominated for a primetime Emmy.

Jody McRea (1934-2009) was the son of actor Joel McRea. He was most famous for his work in beach party movies.

Liza Minnelli (born 1946) was the daughter of Judy Garland and Vincente Minnelli, who directed Lucille Ball in The Long, Long Trailer. In the 1970s, she dated Lucille Ball's son, Desi Jr. She won an Oscar in 1973 for Cabaret. She was just 14 years old when this special was filmed.

Don Murray (born 1929) appeared with Hope Lang (his then wife) on Hedda Hopper's “Playhouse 90” in 1957, the same year he earned an Oscar nomination in 1957 for Bus Stop, also starring Lange.

Ramon Navarro (1899-1968) was a Mexican-born actor who appeared with Francis X. Bushman and Stephen Boyd in the 1925 silent version of Ben-Hur. He also acted with Hedda Hopper in The Barbarian (1933). Along with Bushman, Navarro was mentioned as one of Mrs. McGillicuddy's favorite movie stars in the “I Love Lucy” episode “The Hedda Hopper Story” (ILL S4;E20).

Anthony Perkins (1932-92) is probably best remembered as Norman Bates in Hitchcock's Psycho (1960).

Tyrone Power (uncredited / voice only)

Debbie Reynolds (1932-2016) is best remembered for the musicals Singing in the Rain (1952) and The Unsinkable Molly Brown (1964). Reynolds and Hedda Hopper both played themselves in the 1960 film Pepe. Lucille Ball and Reynolds appeared on talk and awards shows together. Her photograph was prominently seen on the cover of a movie magazine read by Lucy Ricardo on “I Love Lucy,” although her name was not spoken. Ironically, Hedda Hopper’s chief rival Louella Parsons is mentioned on the same cover!

Teddy Rooney (1950-2016) was the son of Mickey Rooney and Martha Vickers. In 1960 he did a number of television shows and films. He is the youngest participant in this special at age 10.

Venetia Stevenson (born 1938) is a British-born starlet whose career ended just one year after this special.

James Stewart (1908-97) was one of Hollywood's most treasured actors. He was an Oscar winner who was nominated again in 1960. Stewart and his wife Gloria were friends and neighbors of Lucille Ball's. He appeared on shows tributing Ball such as “All-Star Party for Lucille Ball” (1984) and “CBS Salutes Lucy: The First 25 Years” (1976). Celebrity voice artist Rich Little imitated Stewart on an episode of “Here's Lucy.”

Gloria Stewart (uncredited) was married to James Stewart in 1949.They had twin daughters, Judy and Kelly. Gloria also had two boys from her first marriage, Ronald and Michael McLean. Stewart starred in Roman Scandals (1933) which featured a young Lucille Ball. She later became famous again for appearing in James Cameron’s Titanic (1997).

Gloria Swanson (1899-1993) was a silent film star whose career managed to transition to talkies, something typified in the 1951 film Sunset Boulevard, which earned her a third Oscar nomination. Hedda Hopper played herself in the film.

King Vidor (1894-1982) was a film director who directed Hedda Hopper in the 1924 silent film Happiness.

Perc Westmore (1904-70) did make-up for The Life of Emile Zola (1937) and The Virgin Queen (1955). He made up Hedda Hopper on the 1932 film The Man Who Played God and did Lucille Ball's make-up for The Big Street (1942).

Bud Westmore (1918-73) did make up for Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid (1948) and Man of a Thousand Faces (1957). He did make-up for “The Jack Benny Show” when Lucille Ball appeared in 1964.

Wally Westmore (1906-73) did make-up for Barbara Stanwyck in The Great Man's Lady (1943). He also did make-up for Lucille Ball's films Sorrowful Jones (1949) and Fancy Pants (1950), as well as a 1968 episode of “The Lucy Show.” He also did make-up for four films starring Hedda Hopper.

Frank Westmore (1923-85) claims he put hair on Yul Brynner. It was for the 1958 film The Buccaneer.

In 1938, actress Hedda Hopper was given a chance to write a gossip column for the LA Times. It was called “Hedda Hopper's Hollywood.”

This also the title given to a series of six 9 or 10-minute documentary short films that accompanied feature films from December 1941 to October 1942.

In the second entry, Desi Arnaz was seen at the Mocambo. Although Lucy was mentioned, she didn't get any camera time.

The title was also given to a 1964 episode of “The Beverley Hillbillies” which featured Hopper playing herself.

In 2011, author Jennifer Frost used the title for her book Hedda Hopper’s Hollywood: Celebrity Gossip and American Conservatism.

Throughout the hour-long special, Hopper is never in the same frame with the celebrities. Rather she introduces 'talking heads' segments and uses voice-over narration to link them together.

The special was presented as part of NBC's “Sunday Showcase” (1959-1960), an anthology series of specials. In 1959 the series presented a “The Lucy-Desi Milton Berle Special” which featured Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz as Lucy and Ricky Ricardo, visiting Las Vegas. It was only one of two times Lucille Ball played Lucy Ricardo on NBC, rather than CBS. Their presentation of "The Sacco-Vanzetti Story" earned a 1961 Emmy nomination for Program of the Year. Richard Adler composed the opening theme music, titled "Sunday Drive."

The special opens with Hedda Hopper wearing one of her trademark big hats, strands of pearls and a fur stole, sitting on a scenic layby overlooking Hollywood in the valley below.

Hedda: “This is a story of my town. There's no town like it on the face of the earth. Because it's business is make-believe. And for over fifty years the people in this town have been getting up and going to work to to to tell the world a story. Down in that valley, some of them are busy crowning an emperor and some others are fighting the Civil War again. Somewhere else a band of cattle thieves are shooting it out with the sheriff's posse and two people who only met this morning are being married in front of an army of cameramen and crew for this – is Hollywood.”

Hopper says she's been in Hollywood for 21 years.

The scenes switches to a studio gate where Lucille Ball drives up. This is Desilu, formerly RKO, where Lucille Ball got her start. After phenomenal success on television, she and husband Desi Arnaz eventually bought the studios. The car stops in front of the Desilu Workshop, which Lucy says was inspired by the RKO workshops she attended as a young contract player, conducted by Ginger Rogers' mother, Lela. Lucy calls out to a few of the students waiting for her – Jerry [Antes] and Georgine [Darcy]. At the time, the group was preparing for a TV variety show to be broadcast on Christmas Day 1959 as part of “The Westinghouse-Desilu Playhouse,” the same anthology series that would present the very last “Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour” episode just four months later, bringing the end to an era. In return for this appearance, Hopper made a brief appearance as herself in the show, titled “The Desilu Revue.”

Lucy (about the Desilu Workshops): “We have paid audiences, because I feel a paid audience is a more demanding audience.”

Lucille Ball is also just weeks away from formally divorcing husband Desi Arnaz. Lucy talks about the special in the past tense as the special will air a week after the Workshop.

Getting into a golf cart, Lucy says she is on her way to “The Untouchables” set, where Nick Georgiadi is a series regular, and also a member of the workshop. She says she also has to visit stage 3 where Ann Sothern is rehearsing in order to convince her to use some of her workshop students. Sothern, a great friend of Ball's, was filming “The Ann Sothern Show.” Finally, Lucy says she has to check on some costumes at wardrobe.

Bob Cummings sits on a sound stage telling the story of how he was discouraged from pursuing an acting career. Despite this he got an opportunity that turned into the film Three Smart Girls Grow Up (1939). While filming this story for Hedda Hopper, his second TV series “The Bob Cummings Show” had just finished a five season run on CBS. A year earlier, he guest-starred in “The Ricardo’s Go To Japan”, a 1959 installment of “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour.”

On another stage (actually the same set, slightly redressed), Anthony Perkins talks about young actors trying to carve a unique niche in Hollywood.

Four (of the six) Westmore Brothers, make-up artists from the Westmore dynasty, sit in front of a dressing room mirror. Perc, Wally, Bud, and Frank all reveal one of their famous make-up credits.

The scene shifts to the western street of a back lot. Jody McRae sidles up to disclose that he's working with his father (Joel McRae) on a series called “Wichita Town” (1959-60). Unfortunately for father and son, the series was canceled after just one season.

Inside a western street saloon sits Gary Cooper, who says his first talking picture was The Virginian (1929). The show assumes that viewers know who he is on sight, so Cooper does not introduce himself, nor does Hopper's voice-over. Cooper says some of his favorite films were The Pride of the Yankees (1942), Sergeant York (1941), Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936), and High Noon (1952).

Cooper: “We used to wonder when the Western story material would peter out. Seems like it never will.”

In 1960, that may have seemed true, but by the mid-1970s the Western genre had gone out of fashion on screens big and small.

Cooper ends his segment with his trademark “yep” something he memorably did in the 1949 Warner Brothers picture It’s a Great Feeling. Hopper's voice over says that one of the best westerns he did was The Plainsman (1936), directed by Cecil B. DeMille. This leads to a visit to DeMille's library where we he planned “the dividing of the red sea” - a reference to The Ten Commandments (1956). We are introduced to his editor Anne Bauchens. DeMille died just one year before this program was filmed.

Hopper (voice): “Spectacle was Hollywood's cup of tea. From the San Francisco earthquake to William Wyler's chariot race.”

Hopper is referring to the films San Francisco (1936) and Ben-Hur (1959). At a table at The Brown Derby (actually a reasonable facsimile), Stephen Boyd, Ramon Navarro, and Francis X. Bushman discuss the spectacle of shooting chariot races in both the 1925 and 1959 films of Ben-Hur.

Bushman is strategically positioned sitting in front of a line drawing of Hedda Hopper. Both “I Love Lucy” and “The Lucy Show” set scenes at The Brown Derby. After their stories, the camera pans over to the next booth, where Hedda Hopper is sitting, listening. She is positioned in front of a line drawing of Mickey Rooney.

Hopper: “Thirty five years has passed between the first Ben-Hur and the one you're seeing today. You know, it wouldn't surprise me if they made another Ben-Hur sometime.”

Hopper's prediction came true in 2016 – 56 years later - when a brand new Ben-Hur was released starring Jack Huston as the title character.

Hopper (in front of her home): “You know, every morning when I go to work, I thank the good Lord I'm still alive. Like everybody else in this town I go to work and come home at night. There are many kinds of homes in Hollywood. This is mine. I bought it 17 years ago, and oh, I love it. I hope to go on living in it for the rest of my life.”

Paparazzi-style film captures Jimmy and Gloria Stewart leaving their homes and getting into the family car to go to out on a Sunday afternoon.

Next, the camera goes inside the home of Hope Lange and Don Murray, who is putting on a puppet show for their two children, Christopher and Patricia. Their marriage broke up the following year.

The camera takes the long trip up the driveway of the Greenacres, the palatial home of Harold Lloyd. The silent film star strolls out onto the portico with his son Harold Jr. and his granddaughter Suzanne (by his daughter Gloria) to wave for cameras. Hopper's voice over describes some of the home's charity events and parties with famous silent film stars.

Lloyd's wife, Marion Davies, dressed to the nines, says a few words of welcome. It marked her final filmed appearance. Davies was fighting cancer when she appeared on this show. It was her final film appearance.

Hopper: “Yes, there are still many great houses that belong to the glorious gilded days – before income tax.”

From real Hollywood homes, we are now on the back lot at MGM where the homes were used in the filming of Meet Me in St. Louis (1944) starring Judy Garland.

Ten year-old Teddy Rooney (son of Mickey Rooney) is discovered on Carville Street, where the Andy Hardy pictures were made by his father. Teddy says he is about to start shooting his first television series “Man of the House.” The show co-starred his real life mother, Martha Vickers, but only a pilot episode was ever shot.

Hopper is found sitting in a box at the Paris Opera House set from the original 1925 film version of The Phantom of the Opera starring Lon Chaney. Hopper hears voices from the past like John Barrymore, Tyrone Power, and Mario Lanza. While Hopper is listening to the voices, director John Cassavetes appears on the stage to tell her that they will need the set to rehearse a scene from his series “Johnny Staccato.”

Producer King Vidor talks about location shooting taking over for back lots. Downsizing of background artists is also the way of the future.

Gloria Swanson talks about the way films have changed for audiences and actors.

Debbie Reynolds (in the same dressing room occupied by Swanson) tells us how busy she's been and how she craves to get away.

As an example of how young starlets conduct themselves today [1960] Venetia Stevenson drives onto the studio lot in a tiny sports car, casually dressed, grabs her script and runs into the soundstage. Right behind her is a chauffeur driven Rolls Royce. A maid gets out holding a puppy wearing a huge bow. Hedda Hopper steps out of the car, bedecked in jewels and furs. “This is the way they used to do it!” The maid holds the train on Hopper's gown as she heads into the soundstage.

Hedda Hopper (without her trademark hat) says that only one person has the right to be called a Hollywood legend: Greta Garbo. Hopper shows still photos of Garbo in Anna Karenina (1935), Mata Hari (1931), Queen Christina (1933), and Camille (1936). Hopper played Garbo's sister in As You Desire Me (1932) and says that the reclusive star briefly let down her guard with her to reveal a warm and intelligent person.

William Daniels, Garbo's cameraman on 24 of her 26 pictures, says he hopes that she will return to the screen someday, to let a new generation appreciate her beauty and talent. Her last film before going into self-imposed retirement was in 1941. Hopper tells of Garbo's first (silent) picture, The Torrent (1926), where her leading man was Ricardo Cortez.

Cortez (above) recalls that Garbo was sensitive and shy, but a hard worker.

Walt Disney talks about Mickey Mouse, the first mouse ever to win an Oscar. Disney shows a still of Mickey's premiere in Steamboat Willy (1928) for $1,200. To balance out Mickey, Disney created a more mischievous character, Donald Duck. From there, Disney was able to produce Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), their first feature length animated film. That first Mickey Mouse cartoon also led to Disneyland and their upcoming animated feature 101 Dalmatians (1961).

Sitting in a void, 14 year-old Liza Minnelli sings “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” a song her mother Judy Garland introduced in 1939's The Wizard of Oz.

Janet Gaynor talks about winning the very first Academy Award in 1928 for Seventh Heaven, Sunrise, and Street Angel. These were her first three roles. Ever since, it has only been given for one performance.

Standing amid a pile of suitcases, Bob Hope talks about Hollywood in general, presenting almost a monologue on the subject. He riffs on make-up artists and then starts to joke about the investigations surrounding the quiz show scandals, which came to a head in 1959.

Hope: “I think they're going too far with this honesty thing. The other night on 'Wells Fargo' the heavies held up the stagecoach and gave back all the money from the week before.”

Hope: “Hedda has a fabulous fund of Hollywood knowledge. She knows whose who, who's where, where's what, and how, when, and where there's going to be some hoo-hooing. Hedda's a listener in the largest party line in the world. She has to wear those big hats to keep the secrets from leaking out.”

Hope: “I think Hedda's gowns are very colorful tonight. She makes the NBC peacock look like a beatnik seagull.”

Although this program may have been filmed and aired in color (most “Sunday Showcase” episodes were), it only remains in monochrome kinescope copies.

Back on the scenic overlook as the sun sets, Hopper sums up her feelings about “her” town – Hollywood.

Lucy Ricardo and Hedda Hopper

In 1952's “The Gossip” (ILL S1;E24) Lucy calls Ricky and Fred “Hedda and Lolly” after hearing them indulge in gossip about the Tropicana hat check girl. Lolly refers to Hopper's chief competition, gossip columnist Louella Parsons. Ricky usually pronounced her name Hedda Hooper.

In 1955′s “The Hedda Hopper Story” (ILL S4;E20), Lucy comes up with an elaborate plan conspire to get into Hopper’s column and get some much-needed publicity for Ricky. Little do they know that Lucy's mother has invited her over for tea.

Ricky: “Mother, darling. Why didn't you tell us it was Hedda Hooper?” Mrs. McGillicuddy: “You didn't ask me!”

To kick off “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour,” a flashback to how Lucy and Ricky met was framed by an interview with Hedda Hopper in “Lucy Takes a Cruise to Havana” (1957). Desi convinced the network to extend the show by fifteen minutes for this episode. As a result, Hedda Hopper's framing interview is usually cut for syndication. Here Ricky finally learns how to pronounce Hopper’s name. Unfortunately, the apple doesn’t fall far from the Latin-American tree: Little Ricky greets her by saying “How do you do, Miss Hepper!”

Her head was pounding and she fucking knew she wasn’t going to be able to look Axel in the eye that day. Never mind that Wade had called a meeting between the members of X-Force and she’d been summoned belatedly. She wasn’t actually a member, seeing as she wasn’t a mutant, but she did handle all his tech stuff for him, so it made sense why he wanted her there.

But she really wished she could have known about it the previous night before she went out with Jane and Natasha and got fucking wasted on Russian vodka. That shit was so strong, she’d actually hallucinated calling Axel and confessing every single aspect of her crush on him.

She’d even told him how much it turned her on when he bit his lip and how she really wanted to do that herself. To him. It was more eloquent the night before when she was hallucinating.

As she pushed open the door to Sister Margaret’s, her eyes stopped aching and she was able to take her sunglasses off and slide them into her purse. She took a seat in one of the booths and pulled out her phone to pass the time. Domino slid in on her other side and checked her shoulder.

“Heya, Darce.”

“Hey,” she replied, smiling weakly.

“Oh, you’re hungover,” her friend exclaimed. “Told you that you shoulda let me come along. I never get hungover.”

“Yeah, I’ll remember that for next time,” Darcy groaned.

By that time, everyone had filed in, and Wade had started talking. (He had a visual aid in the form of a dry erase board with a marker that squeaked more than it wrote)

The squeaking was grating on her poor headache and she looked up from her phone to see Axel seated directly across from her, his eyes on the board, but his lip between his teeth.

He bit down until the skin went white, and when he released it, it flushed red again.

Fuck. She might have a headache, but that was still hot as hell.

He ran his tongue over the place where he’d bitten and cut his eyes back to her, locking on her gaze and winking. He had his phone in his hand as well, texting something without looking at the screen.

Her phone buzzed in her hand as his message appeared at the top of the screen.

Frowning hurt, but she did it anyway as she quickly scrambled to check it.

“Is it when I bite it like that, or is there another way I’m not aware of?” It was followed by a winky face and she could have sworn all the blood drained from her face as she quickly checked her call log, her stomach dropping down to her toes when she did.

It wasn’t a hallucination.

She’d actually called him.

And told him she wanted to bite his lip for him.

Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck.

Another text came through. “Calm down, D. I like it when you’re trying to hack in somewhere and you’ve got that look on your face like you’re trying to read Esperanto. Fucking hot as hell, babe.”

She flushed bright red then, glancing up at his face and then back down at her phone because she liked that even more than when he bit his lip.

“And you will meet up after this meeting to bang out your problems,” Wade said suddenly. “Now if you two are finished eye-fucking each other, can we get back to---“ He tapped the board with his fingers.

“It’s the same basic setup as before, except you need all new fake IDs from me because you guys blew all your covers last time,” she paraphrased. “I’ve got it.”

“Yeah well, let Axel live, will ya? How’s he supposed to pay attention so he doesn’t acid-puke on every single person and blow our covers again if you’re over there being adorable?”

“I acid-puked on one person, and it only damaged their shoes,” Axel retorted. “You blew our covers by not remembering the names on our IDs. Now, having said that...” He turned to Darcy, smirking a little. “You really should let me live, babe.”

Domino rolled her eyes. “Now, I’m going to puke.”
