The death of his parents brought in a lot of hidden information to young Timothy Drake. For example, Janet and Jack weren't the only family Tim had. Turns out, Janet Drake had two older sisters, whom she had estranged herself from a long time ago, meaning Tim had two blood aunts, an uncle, and two adult aged older cousins. The discovery of his other family was both joyful, and worrying, making his future uncertain until the social workers could work something out.

After court appearances and jurisdiction issues, Tim was finally plopped in the lap of the relitive that was deemed "most suitable", whatever that meant; his older cousin Danny.

From what Tim had overheard *cough*snooped out*cough, his Aunt Alicia lived in the middle of nowhere without much electricity or even internet, and while she would have taken him in, the social workers worried the drastic, and sudden change in environment, on top of his grief, would make everything even harder on him, especially since Alicia lived hours away from any therapists, which was a requirement due to the situation. His Aunt Maddie and her husband Jack were immediately denied, given the state of their home and the 'open lab' concept they had going on down stairs, not to mention the fact that their own kids had seemingky cut contact as soon as they turned 18. The next person they looked into was his cousin Jazz, Maddie's oldest child, but while she looked like the best fit on paper, given her job as a therapist and psychoanalysis gave her the means and emotional capabilities to raise a child, but Jazz's job wasn't stationary, she helped a lot with the FBI, and more specifically, the rehabilitation of Villains and Rogues, meaning she traveled a lot and tended to have a target on her back due to her Job, it just wasn't safe or consistent enough for rearing a child. That left Danny, Jazz's younger brother. At just 25 years old Danny was a freelance engineer, and consultant that worked according to his own hours, not only did having the ability to chose his own work schedule make it easier for him to spend time with Tim, but the fact that Danny could work anywhere meant that Tim didn't have to leave Gotham, as Danny was willing to move to Gotham so Tim didn't have to change schools, or leave his home.

So here Tim was, in Drake Mansion, sitting across from a cousin he had never meant before, his new guardian, trying to wrap his head around the entire situation as best he could.

When Danny heard from Jazz about their estranged younger cousin, he hadn't thought much on it. He felt bad for the kids situation, and he hoped the kid was actually getting looked after, but never in a million years did he expect to be deemed 'most suitable' to care for the kid. Honestly he's thought Jazz, or Aunt Alicia would be best suited, Jazz had the fancy "feelings degrees", and his Aunt had a peaceful farm, Danny was just a freelance engineer that worked out of his condo most days, while portaling back and fourth to the Ghost Zone to help Clockwork, and other Ghosts with whatever wacky hijinks they needed help with.

Phantom had retired, the Portal in his parents house sealed, and their blueprints tampered with just enough to not be obvious, but still make making another portal to Ghost Zone impossible. Danny had graduated with grades passable enough to get a partial scholarship, and then he left Amity, working labor jobs on the weekends to live and pay the rest of his tuition. Once he graduated, Danny started working with a company, before eventually breaking off to start working for himself.

Once Danny had left Amity, he got his name changed. He didnt hate his parents, but Danny had just started to not care, it was painful to yearn for acknowledging repeatedly, only to be ignored in favor of work, so Danny just stopped trying, changed his name, and simply didn't call or visit his parents. Jazz hadn't totally agree with his actions, she'd kept their parents name, but she didn't visit or talk to them much either, not unless they reached out first, so she didnt have much of a leg to stand on.

Given all that, Danny had been surprised when Tim's social worker reached out to him. At first he figured they wanted a character reference for his sister, but to his shock, they wanted to know if he would take Tim in, saying that he, Danny, seemed the most stable for the child. It was a whirlwind of questions, and background checks, and parenting classes, and court dates, but before long Danny found himself staring down at his little cousin in a too big, too cold, too staged mansion in Gotham New Jersy.

Reacting to My Pre-College Self

It was just over four years ago that I made the official decision to attend Smith College. For more about why I chose Smith check out my second-ever blog post. A few days ago I attended my very last class. It wasn’t as emotional as I’d perhaps envisioned and this is likely because I had and still have a fair amount of remaining coursework (exams, projects, and papers). With that said, I definitely felt something in my final EGR 410 class a few weeks back as the class is exclusively seniors (technically some of them are J-grads) and I’d already finished up the respective coursework. Looking forward, I have one more day of reading period and an additional four days of finals. Thus, next Friday the academic part of my college career will officially come to a close. Absolutely crazy, I know! A lot has happened over the last four years and much of it is documented here on my blog. I really can’t believe that in two weeks' time, I’ll be an official college graduate! I’ll probably do a ton more reflecting during senior and after graduation, but for now, I’m just looking back and reacting to a letter I wrote the summer before Smith to my future advisor as part of some sort of advising information form for new students. I find this to be a fun post format, so if you like it, consider reading my reaction/response to my 7th-grade self.

As Smith was my top choice, I am so very excited to be attending next fall. Sort of surprised I didn’t include an exclamation point here, but perhaps I edited it out to be more formal or whatever. The other college I was considering was my state college, UVM (with a full-tuition scholarship). I don’t think I’ve written about this publicly before, but yeah I gave up a full-tuition scholarship to be here. This decision also meant forfeiting financial assistance from my parents for graduate school. Ultimately, I’m so glad that I made the decision I did, but I’d be lying if I said I managed to stay regret free for the full four years. I am excited about Smith for its engineering program paired with a liberal arts education. I really love the small and tight-knit engineering community of awesome faculty and students. However, the small size of the program can at times be limiting. In my case, I had the unlucky timing of being a junior/senior in years when we didn’t have many electrical engineering professors. That said, there will be a new electrical engineering professor next fall who folks are really excited about. As for the liberal arts part, while I did ultimately become a double STEM major, it really has been valuable attending a relatively small college with housemates and other peers who aren’t exclusively technical people. I am thrilled that I will be able to continue my study of French (which would not have been possible at UVM). I did take three French classes here at Smith but initially envisioned taking more. We’ll see if I get back into language learning after college as I really did find the language learning process to be fun. I want to keep my options open for study abroad in France (or another French-speaking country). I ultimately decided against studying abroad. A key factor in this decision was not wanting to miss another semester on campus. There was also just the self-awareness that my majors were more important to me and that realistically I’d be too focused on academics to really make the most of the experience. I plan to pursue a B.S. in engineering and fulfill the Latin Honors requirements for the breadth. Even though this is what ultimately happened, it wasn’t that simple as ultimately I took on computer science as a second major! I plan to fulfill a good chunk of the Latin Honors requirements with French courses. Fair enough, FRN 120 counted towards the foreign language requirement and FRN 230 counted towards literature. I also look forward to taking a bunch of computer science courses. I definitely did that as I took a total of 12 computer science courses during my time at Smith! I was originally considering a CS systems minor, but I think I will just take as many CS classes as I can and ignore the specific requirements for the minor. Haha, well turns out I took on computer science as a second major!

I consider myself introverted, but my peers see me as more extroverted. I’d say this is still fairly accurate as I’m introverted but very talkative and definitely not shy. I think that writing is a weakness of mine and I do not really like studying history. While I wouldn’t go as far as to say that writing is a strength of mine, this blog has definitely helped me feel more comfortable with informal writing. My technical and email writing skills have also improved during my time here. With that said, I still find writing essays to be a bit scary and anxiety-producing. You can check out some of my prior reflections on writing at the respective link. As for history, I’m still not very interested in studying it, but to be fair I didn’t really try (in part because of the essays I’d have to write). I think I am fairly good at computer programming and time management. I’m obviously an even better programmer now! As for time management, I'm not totally convinced that it’s a strength of mine. What I am good at is ultimately getting the work and for the most part, doing it well. My challenge is that I’m not always as efficient as I’d like as I can be a bit of a perfectionist. As of now, I am just super excited about most aspects of college. The stuff I am most nervous about is having a roommate and just the general transition. I was fortunate to have a great first-year roommate, but also to have a single in all subsequent years. As for the transition, I really don’t remember it being that hard. I will say I’m a lot more nervous about my transition to the real world as I’ll really be on my own. It is of course also very exciting. I am slightly concerned that I will be super busy and not read enough nonschool books. While it’s been a busy last four years, prior to senior year I really did keep up with personal reading. Well, that is only a half-truth as I primarily listened to audiobooks, but I did do it every day and got through an average of a book a week. With that said, senior year has been insane and I’ve hardly done any personal reading. I’ve got a few months before my full-time job starts, so I will hopefully read a few books and work on rebuilding the habit.

currently, you were sitting in your dorm room at ohio state university. you were on a facetime call with your boyfriend, peter parker. it was approaching midnight, 11:38 p.m., to be exact.

 the next morning, you would be boarding a plane home. you were beyond excited to see everyone during thanksgiving break, as you hadn’t seen your parents in a few weeks. parent’s weekend was the last week of october, so it had been a while. 

your heart ached at the thought of being curled up in bed with your dogs. your heart also ached at the thought of being curled up with your sweet, loving, boy.

peter had opted for a small private college in town for engineering and psychics. since he was a part of the avengers, they provided most of the funds for his tuition. it also helped that stark industries was on his résumé. meanwhile, you were about five hundred and thirty-three miles away in columbus.

yet, ohio state was your dream school. you wanted to go there since you could remember. it also helped that your father was an alumni. the university granted you a scholarship for that, and your ACT and SAT scores helped as well. you felt extremely blessed to be at your dream school, and you always remembered to remain humble.

“well babe,” peter began, “i need to start my term paper for my english class. anything on your mind before i go?”

“is this seat open still?” a voice interrupted your thoughts.

startled, you glanced up to see a young man standing in the aisle of the airplane. even though you had the middle seat, the plane wasn’t entirely full. you decided to scoot closer to the window so you could see the sky.

you nodded, and the young man slid in beside you, “sorry, my seat was supposed to be the window seat, but i think you’re sitting in it. i don’t want to make you move. besides, looking out scares me a little bit.”

“i’m so sorry,” you apologized, “i didn’t know. you can have it back if you want.”

“oh no,” the man chuckled, “it’s not a big deal. don’t even worry about it.”

“where you flying to?” you inquired, as the man settled in his seat, “i’m (y/n), by the way.”

“i’m trying to get to manhattan,” the guy shrugged, “i’m aiden.”

“oh that’s cool!” you nodded, “i’m from queens.”

“gotcha,” aiden smiled, “actually, i’m coming from ohio state. i’m guessing you attend there as well?”

“yes,” you gushed, “i’m a kinesiology major, how about you?”

“i was a political science,” aiden replied, pulling out his phone, “but i switched to business. international marketing, specifically. i’m a junior though. i assume that you’re a freshman?”

“yep,” you answered, “navigating everything myself.”

“you’re not doing too bad,” he chuckled, “our background has probably helped a lot. do you have a snapchat or anything like that? don’t worry, i’m not hitting on you or anything. if you have a boyfriend back home, or at ohio state, i completely respect that. i just don’t want someone struggling alone. i’m not saying you are struggling, but i know the ins and outs of the school. if you ever need anything, feel free to ask.”

“oh yeah, i do,” you pulled your phone out of your pocket, “i’ll just add it to my notes and add you later. you’re extremely kind.”

“it’s not a problem,” aiden smiled, and that’s when you truly got a good look at him.

he was more than likely a college athlete. probably at ohio state for something like rugby, lacrosse, or rowing. he was fit, with a darker complexion. freckles dotted the bridge of his nose, and his dark brown curls were full. his jawline was clean, his handsome face completed with hazel eyes. god, if you weren’t single, you probably would have tried to make a move on the guy. he was gorgeous.

however, your anticipation to see the love of you life was eating away at you. your knee bounced up and down as you talked to aiden the rest of the flight. it was nice to have someone to talk to, as the it made the time fly by.

in no time, the plane was landing. aiden followed you as you boarded off, and towards the gate. security and bag checks felt like forever, but you finally made it through. you said your goodbyes to aiden, hoping that you two would reconnect once again. almost immediately, you were entering the train that was going to take you to your next stop. then, you would only be walking a couple blocks home. peter informed you that as soon as you were home, he was gonna come over.

you were excited, but a little anxious. insecurities started to creep into your thoughts. what if you had gained a noticeable amount of weight since the last time you saw him? what if you looked different? what if you weren’t good enough? even the thought of being naked in front of peter frightened you. however, you figured it was a little normal to be a little anxious. after all, it had been about three months since the last time you saw him.

suddenly, you were home. in front of you was your house, the crisp blue sky making the white paint appear clean and bright. the late november air was brittle, and the sun was on its way to dip over the horizon soon. skyscrapers in the skyline began to glisten as the sky got darker and darker. the traffic, people, and animals all became white noise as you walked up the sidewalk.

happiness flooded over you, especially as soon as you heard your dogs barking. you turned the knob, opening the door. your parents welcomed you with warm hugs, your dogs jumping everywhere with excitement.

after talking with your parents for a while, you trudged upstairs to your room. as soon as you opened the door of your room, you let out a sigh of happiness. so this is what pure happiness felt like. the feeling of bliss was immense.

you heard some commotion from your dogs downstairs, which you figured was a passerby or an animal. it happened often in your neighborhood. you could hear someone walking up the steps, and you inferred it was one of your parents.

“I couldn’t unlock the door today,” El says from the couch in the cabin as Hopper walks in. He drops his utility belt on the table by the door and removes his hat, walking towards her.

“Sorry - what?” He pauses and looks between her and the TV, her eyes zeroed in on it.

“I had to crawl through the window after Mrs Wheeler dropped me off. Normally I can open the door without a problem,” she repeats and glances up at him then looks away.

Rubbing a hand across his face, he sighs. “Where were your keys? I thought we talked about this. You’re supposed to be cutting back on using your powers.”

“I forgot them,” she shrugs. He steps in front of the TV and squats down to her level, his eyes focused on her.

“El,” he watches as her wide eyes blink and her composure crumbles. “Kid, it’s okay,” he whispers into her hair as he wraps her up in his arms.

Hopper tries not to be frustrated with her, she was just a kid, but she had to know how serious this situation was. “Mom!” Will yells from somewhere in the house, the sound cutting across the line.

“Shh, I’m on the phone!” She shouts back and Hopper chuckles at the reaction.

“We’ll be there in twenty minutes,” Hopper states and hangs up, unwilling to take no for an answer. El and him make quick work of getting ready and arrive sooner than expected to a dark house before them. “I just called them…” He mumbles, looking between Joyce’s car and the empty windows.

Another second passes and Joyce and Will spill onto the front porch, Will struggling to put his coat on as Joyce drops her keys not once, but twice. He frowns at her flustered movements, watching carefully as they head towards the truck and pile in.

He knew the transition to not having Jonathan in the house would be tricky - Joyce relied on him heavily to keep Will looked after between her jobs - but he hadn’t expected the situation to fall apart at the seams like it looked to be.

“Hey,” El greeted as they clipped their seatbelts in and Joyce let out a heavy breath.

“Hi El - how’re you doing?” Joyce replied, turning to face her and focusing in on her in the way that made Hopper’s heart stumble with affection.

“I’m okay. I couldn’t open the door today so he’s trying to make me feel better.”

Hopper starts the engine as Joyce looks towards him, her hand reaching across the seat to grip his tightly in solidarity. The comfort comes unspoken between them and he manages to give her hand a squeeze before returning it to the wheel.

They’re halfway to town when Hopper shoots Joyce a look, eyebrows raised. “Why were all the windows dark when we picked you up?” He asks lowly as Joyce’s face flushes.

“She forgot to pay the electric bill,” Will pipes up from the back, laughing at the situation. Joyce scowls at him and tries to shush him from her seat.

“Oh,” Hopper nods, glancing at her briefly and gauging her reaction. “Was it a money thing or - “

“No. I just forgot. I went to the bank to wire the money for Jonathan’s tuition but I forgot to pay the bill when I was there. It’s fine,” she stumbles over the words as though she’s putting them together on the fly. He didn’t need to be a detective to see through it, but he knew better than to question her on it.

“Got it. Do you guys want to stay at the cabin tonight until you can call them tomorrow? It’s supposed to get cool…”

“Yes! Sleepover on a school night!” Will shouts from behind his seat as Joyce smiles weakly towards him.

“You’re sure that’s okay? I can bring the air mattress and set it up,” she offers a strained smile as he pulls into a parking spot.

“You guys can share Hopper’s room Mom, we know you share your room all the time when El stays over,” Will interjects and Hopper watches as El punches his shoulder.

“You weren’t supposed to tell them that we knew,” she hisses towards her friend, their attempt at keeping the secret falling apart.

“Yeah but the air mattress sucks. It has holes and everything, El. She’d basically be sleeping on the floor!”

“Okay - got it. Let’s just leave it at that,” Hopper laughs awkwardly and makes a show of leading the way into the restaurant.

They settle down to eat and after El and Will disappear into the playplace leaving Joyce and Hopper alone at the table. Neither of them know really where to start with the conversations they need to have so instead they choose to sit quietly, Joyce coming over to lean next to him as they watch the kids beyond the glass.

The ride home is a loud one as the kid’s excitement ramps up. Smiling, Hopper listens to the noise with a contentment he hadn’t felt in a long time. When Sara died he’d thought that that was the end of family for him - he was on his own. He’d divorced Diane less than a year after her death, his drinking and self-medicating tearing apart the patchwork marriage they’d been struggling through for the last year. Moving back to Hawkins and taking on the Chief of Police position had been a measure of desperation and he’d disappeared into himself, drowning in alcohol and a spree of one-night stands.

He’d never imagined that the disappearance of Will would be a catalyst to changing so much of his life - it had brought him El, lead him back to Joyce and somehow helped him build a paper house that he was determined to make work for as long as he could. He didn’t want to think about the end and what that would mean for him. He’d been telling Joyce the truth that day when he’d said he wouldn’t survive it. He wouldn’t. Couldn’t.

But that wasn’t a thought he wanted. Not as Joyce and Will piled into the truck with their overnight things and he drove back to the cabin in the dark. He got lost in the feel of the evening, the laughter coming easily as they forgot about everything that was going on. When Joyce and him were left on the couch as the hour grew late, he didn’t care that the kids were in the other room as he pulled her to him, his lips settling on hers as he sighed against her.

“I thought we were hiding our tracks better,” she murmurs after a moment, leaning back so she can look at him as her arms wrap around his neck.

“Mmhm, it was bound to happen eventually though.”

“That’s true. I don’t know - I guess I just,” she shrugs and tucks her head against his shoulder. “I think I just worry - they’ve been through a lot in the last few years. I don’t want us not working - “

“Are you thinking we’re not going to work out?” He interrupts and pulls back, a chill running through him.

“No - not at all. I’m just...“

“Scared?” He offers when she pauses, her lip between her teeth.

“Yeah. That’s a good word for it. I feel like everything is going well for once, like I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop or something.” He closes his eyes and nods, his arms bringing her close again.

“God, I feel the same way. But I think half that fear is that you’ll just stop needing me and find someone else again,” he whispers the last part, self-conscious and vulnerable as he admits it.

“Again?” She presses, her fingers lightly scratching through his hair.

“It’s stupid.” His words are muttered, his lips placing kisses along her neckline as he tries to distract her.

“No, it’s not. Jim, when did I ever stop needing you?” She sits back and searches her eyes with his, fingers gripped in his shirt as though she couldn’t bare the thought of letting go.

“Like in highschool, with Lonnie,” he shrugs and looks away sheepishly. Joyce’s burst of laughter makes him jump in his skin, his eyes snapping back towards her.

“You told me that you couldn’t be with me,” she scoffs.

“I did not. I said that  - “

“‘I’m not right for you, Joyce,’” she tries to mimic his voice, her hands coming to her hips as she sits up tall on his lap. “It hurt me. I didn’t know how to deal with it and I made a mistake. But I never stopped needing you. That’s why I found you on Graduation Day and told you about the pregnancy. I needed your help then but - “

“I went off to war,” he adds quietly. They pause, their memories heavy on them until Hopper leans in and presses a whisper of a kiss to her lips. “We’ve found our way back,” he murmurs, his hand sliding up to cup her cheek. She returns the kiss, deepens it, before drawing back and getting to her feet.

She leads them into his bedroom and they take their time undressing in the light of the bedside lamp. When they climb into the bed and pull the quilt up around them, Joyce makes an effort to tuck her back against his until they’re flush and his hand is free to ghost over her skin.

They ensure to keep silent, their moans swallowed as their hands explore. It’s only after Hopper slides out of her, his body spent, that she rolls over and slips her leg between his with her nose against his throat.

“Are you going to call Owens about El?” Joyce asks when their breathing returns to normal, the calm night around them quiet and still.

“Yeah. I’ll do it tomorrow. I don’t know though - I feel like maybe it’s a good thing if her powers stop working. She can be a normal kid for once if it - I mean, is it shitty for me to feel like this?” He mumbles above her, his body instinctively tightening at the admission.

“No. I don’t think it’s bad to think that. It’s been a challenge for her - for you both… Who knows what’s going to happen.”

“Right? I feel like we can handle it. Whatever happens. This is actually - jesus - it’s the first time I feel that way.” He pauses and squeezes her to him. “Thank you.”

“Mmm, don’t say that now. Show me your thanks in the morning,” she whispers and runs her hand down to his ass where she gives it a playful squeeze.

“Oh, don’t worry - I fully intend to. Can I ask you something though and you won’t get mad at me?” His voice is tentative and low and her response is a mumble that he takes as a yes. “Did you really forget to pay the bill, or were you out of money this month? It’s just - I know the tuition to NYU is insane and as much as I love you here in my bed, I don’t want - “

“Hop… We were having a nice time,” she hisses and moves her head until she can look up at him. He laughs and slides his hand into her hair, guiding her back against him.

“I know. I know. It’s just - I love you and that kid. I can help or we can figure something out that works - “ She pulls back from him then until she’s practically out from under the blanket, her elbow propping her up and exposing her breasts, the distraction immediate.

She stares at him until his gaze slides from her chest to her eyes, the tears that shimmer there making his heart stutter.

“Joyce - “ He starts, terror and confusion lacing through him. What had he said to cause this reaction? Reaching, he brushes his hand over her shoulder and up to her chin, pausing there as she leans into it.

“Hop.” Her whisper reverberates within him and he forces himself to keep his mouth shut. He felt like they were on the verge of something huge, the chasm between them one they needed to cross. “I - I mean… I love you too.”

The breath of relief shakes through him, a deep laugh rumbling through his chest as he pulls her towards him. “I thought I’d pissed you off,” he mutters and kisses her forehead.

“You do, regularly. But I’d never heard you say you loved me before,” she says and he can hear the smile in her voice.

“Well I do. I have. For quite some time,” he admits willingly. He couldn’t remember specifically when it happened, but it was somewhere between a shared cigarette at her kitchen table and watching her fall off that ladder.

“I don’t know if I stopped, to be honest,” she whispers in response as a yawn strikes her and has her curling in closer.

“Joyce…” His fingers lift her chin so he can capture her lips with his, a slow kiss that deepens as he becomes harder at her hip.

“We need to sleep,” she giggles as her hand wraps around him.

“I know. But we just said something huge. Shouldn’t we - you know - seal the deal?” He asks lowly as his own hand finds her center and slips his fingers inside her.

“You’re definitely right. What was I thinking?” She sighs and surprises him by rolling him back and straddling him without warning. He takes the hint and changes his attention to her breast, teeth scraping across her nipples as she rises up and takes him inside.

The act is heated and quick. Their bodies working together, chasing each other with hands and lips, until Hopper has to lift a hand to her mouth to stifle her moan as she comes hard above him. When she collapses onto his chest he revels in the way her teeth nip at a sensitive spot on his neck, her heat squeezing around him until he can’t stand it anymore and he comes inside her with a heavy grunt.

Exhausted, content, they let their bodies cool until Hopper pulls the blanket over her shoulders.

“Hey Hop,” she whispers as her body moves to be his little spoon.

“Yeah?”

“I love you.”

“Love you too.”

System designed to improve database performance for health care, IoT

Sometimes it is best to work smarter and not harder. The same holds true when it comes to peak performance for databases.

One of the big challenges for using databases – whether for health care, Internet of Things or other data-intensive applications – is that higher speeds come at a cost of higher operating costs, leading to over-provisioning of data centers for high data availability and database performance.

With higher data volumes, databases may queue workloads, such as reads and writes, and not be able to yield stable and predictable performance, which may be a deal-breaker for critical autonomous systems in smart cities or in the military.

A team of computer scientists from Purdue University has created a system, called SOPHIA, designed to help users reconfigure databases for optimal performance with time-varying workloads and for diverse applications ranging from metagenomics to high-performance computing (HPC) to IoT, where high-throughput, resilient databases are critical.

“You have to look before you leap when it comes to databases,” said Somali Chaterji, a Purdue assistant professor of agricultural and biological engineering, who directs the Innovatory for Cells and Neural Machines [ICAN] and led the paper. “You don’t want to be a systems administrator who constantly changes the database’s configuration parameters, naïvely, with a parameter space of more than 50 performance-sensitive and often interdependent parameters, because there is a performance cost to the reconfiguration step. That is where SOPHIA’s cost-benefit analyzer comes into play, as it performs reconfiguration of noSQL databases only when the benefit outweighs the cost of the reconfiguration.”

Purdue’s SOPHIA system has three components: a workload predictor, a cost-benefit analyzer, and a decentralized reconfiguration protocol that is aware of the data availability requirements of the organization.

“Our three components work together to understand the workload for a database and then performs a cost-benefit analysis to achieve optimized performance in the face of dynamic workloads that are changing frequently,” said Saurabh Bagchi, a Purdue professor of electrical and computer engineering and computer science (by courtesy). “The final component then takes all of that information to determine the best times to reconfigure the database parameters to achieve maximum success.”

The Purdue team benchmarked the technology using Cassandra and Redis, two well-known noSQL databases, a major class of databases that is widely used to support application areas such as social networks and streaming audio-video content.

“Redis is a special class of noSQL databases in that it is an in-memory key-value data structure store, albeit with hard disk persistence for durability,” Chaterji said. “So, with Redis, SOPHIA can serve as a way to bring back the deprecated virtual memory feature of Redis, which will allow for data volumes bigger than the machine’s RAM.”

The lead developer on the project is Ashraf Mahgoub, a Ph.D. student in computer science. This summer he will go back for an internship with Microsoft Research, and when he returns this fall, he will continue to work on more optimization techniques for cloud-hosted databases.

The Purdue team’s testing showed that SOPHIA achieved significant benefit over both default and static-optimized database configurations. This benefit stays even when there is significant uncertainty in predicting the exact job characteristics.

The work also showed that Cassandra could be used in preference to the recent popular drop-in ScyllaDB, an auto-tuning database, with higher throughput across the entire range of workload types, as long as a dynamic tuner, such as SOPHIA, is overlaid on top of Cassandra.

SOPHIA was tested with MG-RAST, a metagenomics platform for microbiome data; high-performance computing workloads; and IoT workloads for digital agriculture and self-driving cars.

The team worked with the Purdue Research Foundation Office of Technology Commercialization to patent the technology. The office recently moved into the Convergence Center for Innovation and Collaboration in Discovery Park District, adjacent to the Purdue campus.

The National Institutes of Health provided support for some of the research through an NIH-R01 grant. The Purdue team worked with Folker Meyer, a computational biologist from Argonne National Laboratory and a professor of bioinformatics in the Department of Medicine at the University of Chicago, for the metagenomics application MG-RAST.

Fictober 21- Family

Anakin rolled his eyes as Obi-Wan bustled around their cramped apartment with a spray bottle and rag. The space, while probably lush by many coruscanti’s standards was tiny, stupidly over designed, and frankly made Anakin feel like he was living in some minimalist’s wet dream. Rent, however, was cheap when your adoptive big brother loved you- and you were still attending at the local engineering college. The tuition was expensive, his books were expensive, his lab fees were exorbitantly expensive, and the cost to rent a dorm smaller than a standard jail cell was astronomical. Deciding that his dignity literally cost less Anakin had done the mature thing and shown up at Obi-Wan’s door with a small duffle. In the three years he’d been living here the apartment had been spotless. While Anakin had been allowed to be as unorganized as he pleased in his own room, and eventually had wiggled an exception in for the study, the rest of the space had been declared a junk free zone.

If Obi-Wan could even find something more to nervously clean, Anakin would eat his own socks.

He tried to focus on the pod race on the holo instead, jamming a fist full of cheesy chips into his mouth. His feet twitched restlessly back and forth on the low coffee table, Anakin forced himself as far back as the squishy tan couch would let him. If he was being mature right now, Anakin would admit that he was also nervous. Instead he obnoxiously ate his snacks and glared as Obi-Wan ended up half covering the screen.

“Watching the race here Obi,” Anakin spoke around his half chewed food.

Obi-Wan’s glare spoke volumes to how unimpressed he was. “Yes, I can see that. Meanwhile I am actually trying to get everything ready.”

Anakin scowled and bounced his feet a little faster. “She’s not even gonna be here until tomorrow old man.”

There was a long pause as Obi-Wan’s eyes fluttered closed as if in pain. Fierfek.

“She...she is coming tomorrow right?” Anakin found himself swallowing hard.

“No, Anakin, she should be here in ten minutes.”

He was suddenly very, very aware of the fact that he’d been wearing this same set of pajamas all day...for three days straight. His hair felt greasy from not having crammed his too tall body into the sonic for a refresh, he was pretty sure he had powdered orange cheese on his face and hands, and he hadn’t cleared the last few droid parts out of the study. The study that was going to be his niece’s room. Clearing his throat and casting desperately around Anakin managed a weak, “Yeah, well, she’s like, a kid. And kids are gross right? Right. Gross and terrifying.”

Obi-Wan moaned, or at least Anakin was pretty sure that was a moan. It actually sounded a bit like the trains when they squealed around too tight corners.

Under his big brother’s big scrutiny, Anakin both wanted to disappear into space and bristle at the implications. Especially when Obi-Wan’s eyes turned towards Artoo, their little bunny droid. “No loose wire jokes.”

“I didn’t say anything!” Obi-Wan sighed as he went to put his cleaning supplies away.

“You were going to,” Anakin craned his neck backwards over the couch back to glare. “He’s a good droid, and I’m working out the kinks in his system.”

“I didn’t say anything, and as long as he doesn’t electrocute Ahsoka or myself I frankly don’t care. I just don’t think-” Obi-Wan didn’t even have time to stand up straight before Anakin pulled himself around on the couch.

“That’s saying something!”

“Anakin, my couch! Blast it, you’ve gotten smudges all over it.” Anakin found himself magically booted out of his seat as Obi-Wan applied the upholstery cleaner. “Besides, this is exactly the sort of thing I got that droid for.”

“Tch, he works better as a protection droid, no one expects the bunnies Obi-Wan. Besides, gross kids remember, get used to this dad.” Anakin took the four steps needed to be in his bedroom doorway.

“I assure you,” Obi-Wan raised his voice to still be heard as if the walls weren’t paper thin, “my new favorite child will not be as big a mess as you.”

Anakin rolled his eyes at his mirror as he changed into a fresh change of clothes. As if.

The doorbell rang about a half second before Artoo growled, which was a second before Obi-Wan yelped and a crackle of electricity could be heard. Anakin smiled proudly. That was his perfect boy, defending his dad the way he should.

“Anakin get your droid under control and uncross his blasted wires!”

“Obi-Wan, you promised-”

“Take care of him now please.”

Anakin huffed as he went back into the main room where Obi-Wan was using a wooden vase to have a shield between him and the bunny. The doorbell rang a second time and Artoo warbled a miniature battle cry. “Artoo, down boy. Ahsoka’s gonna be your new sister. Be nice.”

The electro prod slowly retracted and Artoo let out a grumble. “I know buddy, you can have all the fun you want after she’s settled in.”

Obi-Wan had unfortunately already palmed the door controls when he turned around to hiss at them, “No hazing Ahsoka!”

“Is this a bad time Mr. Kenobi?” Plo Koon was a large kel dor with a deep booming voice and a penchant for finding orphans, and then finding them homes. Anakin was still unclear as to how Obi-Wan had met him, but had a feeling it was their mutual affections (which they then both tried to pretend they didn’t hold) for small pathetic creatures.

Obi-Wan smiled even as his whole face went pink. “Not at all, please come in.”

Anakin, wearing a pair of dark pants and an undershirt only, tried to backpedal to his room to at least put on his shoes and a proper shirt. Obi-Wan grabbed his elbow and dragged him to sit down on the couch by the still foamy upholstery cleaner. Anakin pulled him down next to him. If he had to suffer through the cloying fresh scent of Naboo’s open fields, so was Obi-Wan. Plo sat down gingerly on a chair that was simply not sized for kel dors, giving him the appearance of moderating a child’s tea party. Ahsoka was probably the smallest and scrawniest togruta Anakin had ever seen. By contrast to her caretaker, Ahsoka looked almost too small for the same sized chair. Her feet barely reaching the floor even with her hunching over the small backpack clutched to her chest as she looked at him suspiciously.

Where Obi-Wan and Ahsoka had met several times and hit it off, Anakin had never met her himself. Seeing her looking at Obi-Wan like a hero and him like a stranger kinda hit home how she was literally going to start living here. For, like, ever. Until college. Until after college Anakin amended.

Obi-Wan and Plo had already started talking, the last few arrangements and thumb prints taken to finalize the adoption process. Anakin sat stiff and uncomfortable and feeling half naked as she critically looked him over. He smiled and wiggled a few fingers at her, and felt that smile become more natural when she grinned a little and wiggled a few fingers back. Yeah, Cool Uncle Anakin. He was rocking it. Gods preserve kids are terrifying?

“Let me show you your room while the adultier adults wrap this up.” Anakin stage whispered, and was rewarded by feeling Obi-Wan’s blistering glare on the side of his head.

It took them literally ten seconds to get to her room and then a half second longer for Anakin to nervously start sweating. He bustled in, gathering up as many droid parts as he could and started to babble. “Sorry about the mess, I forgot when you were, anyways, so I’m an engineering student, uh, I’m Anakin. Did I mention that yet? Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan brother, anyways,droids you know, so uh, this was a study and I forgot, do you like droids?”

When he turned around, barely balancing the stack of parts in his arms Ahsoka started to laugh at him.

Well he was trying to be nice!

She sat down on her new bed and bounced slightly as her laughing fit slowed. “Nice to meet you Skyguy.”

“Snippy,” he grumbled ito a few circuit boards balanced half on his arms and half on his chest.

“What?”

“I said sure thing Snips.”

Anakin bit his tongue and let the awkward silence grow, watching as Ahsoka shook her head slowly and then pulled her bag up to start unpacking. As she started stacking a few paltry bits of clothes, Ahsoka shrugged, “Droids are alright.”

He was kind of offended on Artoo’s behalf. “Droids are super cool. We have one. A little bunny droid, Artoo. I built him. Uh, just be careful around him. Artoo’s got a personality and an electro prod.”

Ahsoka froze, a can of something in her hand and turned to look at him with one brow raised. “You put an electro prod on a bun? That’s, actually that’s kinda brilliant. In a mad scientist way.”

Alright he was no longer offended on Artoo’s behalf.

LaCavera, a 70ish retired electrical engineer, lives in Cleveland in a house that is filled with reminders of the temporal — more than 300 one-of-a-kind hourglasses that he has designed and made in the last 32 years. Each is set on a marble base with the hourglass in a wooden frame, and the whole is adorned with whimsical decoration. “I only do this stuff when inspired,” says LaCavera. “It’s like magic.”

Frank LaCavera hourglass Among the inspirations that became hourglasses are: Castle and Dragon, which includes a tiny steel dragon next to a tiny castle, set on a piece of amethyst, all inside a crystal ball; Pluto, with the hourglass perched atop a spaceship; and Ribs, which includes a plastic pig under glass, reclining in a centerfold pose. LaCavera took up his hobby when he was looking for an hourglass to decorate his study and found out that the closest thing he could buy in Cleveland was an egg timer, so he went into business for himself. He had to invent the machinery and instruments, including one to remove static electricity from inside the glass and another to determine the proper size of the hole between the two halves of the hourglass. (His hourglasses are accurate to 14 seconds an hour.) LaCavera has sold only a few hourglasses over the years (they run from $89 to $1,500), but he prefers to hang on to his work, which now fills the modest three-bedroom frame house he shares with wife Phyllis on the city’s west side. A new law which takes effect Friday repeals the antiquated statute which shut down taverns, bars, and other liquor along with the state's monopoly retail voting hours. The American University System: Oppressing the non-elite.

So let me get this straight...in the 70's there was a community outcry to lower the amount of tax money that got put towards college tuition for future generations? American tax payers used to cover over 70% of college costs, allowing the young students straight out of highschool the ability to work a minimum wage summer job to literally pay their entire tuition. Those with part time jobs while in school were not very common. This allowed for an ability to succeed without the unnecessary baggage of financial stress and lack of sleep at 18 years old while taking 14+ credits, which for those of you who dont know is a true 40-60 hour work week alone. All of this hard work and achievement paved the way for these kids to enter adulthood as educated, debt free, and with the world at their fingertips. Not to mention, they had the incredible privilege of not having to become a self sufficient adult in the middle of the worst economic crisis since the depression...

Compare that romantic reality to our drastically different reality today. I will use my experiences as an example for this, while probably on the extreme spectrum of experiences, they are valid and carry merit nonetheless. I was always told as a child, "you have to go to college, its not an option" Yet, when i graduated highschool, my parents grew quiet. I grew up in a 5 person household in Orange County, CA (one of the most expensive places to live in the country) in a family who made roughly $40k a year, give or take (thats poverty folx). My step-father was an electrical contractor so income was often spuratic. Anyway, needless to say they had not one penny saved for my college tuition. My parents failed to put a single penny aside for anything regarding my well-being honestly. With no car, no money, no job, and no idea when or how I could recieve a college education, I was kicked out of my parents at 17 years old with nowhere to go. I couch surfed and was able to get a couple jobs, one at a crafts store and one at a sandwhich shop. After 2 long years of working my way out of homelessness, all I wanted was to start college! So, at age 19 I applied for financial aid. However, I was told because I was under 25 I needed my parents tax information. Well, my parents never filed on time and were incredible dodgy with communication. So, after months of going back and forth I ended up paying out of pocket for a full time coarse load at a community college. I was able to work my jobs and pay this, but with nothing left over for rent or food. I ended up getting kicked out of my place, had to apply for foodstamps, and had to start over from square one. Little did I know I would have to wait 5 years before I could finally give college another shot.

I had almost given up the idea of higher education. I was making good money in the food industry at this point and had a nice company car and a great home with an awesome roommate. But then, I met a boy. We traveled the country for three months with his bluegrass band and saw 32 states. Afterwards, we again found ourselves broke and homeless. We hunkered down, worked 80+ hour weeks, saved up, and moved to Portland Oregon, "where young people go to retire". Little did we know, retire would be the LAST thing we did when we got there. Cost of living was rising in Portland, but still nothing compared to Orange County, CA. We got good food jobs and nested for about a year. My boyfriend (we will call him N) got great grades in highschool and high test scores in his exit exams, so in 2014 he chose to get back into school as a Music Composition Major at age 26. His journey is a whole other terrible story. I wanted to return to school so badly, but knew I had to wait until I was old enough to not warrant my parents tax info. Finally, at age 24 I filed my FAFSA and went to a career counselor. I was directed in the career of Civil Engineering. Having no prior knowledge of this career or topic, I dove in blindly headfirst. I chose a community college due to the fact that I barely finished highschool and did not take ant exit exams. To my surprise, I did very well in my college settings. After one year I was able to transfer to a university! Me! I WAS GOING TO A UNIVERSITY! I could not believe it, and was soo excited. I had no clue how hard this would be, not the work, but just surviving through it. I should mention here that I have a mild dissability. I have endometriosis which is a chronic illness linked to hormones, ovarian cysts, and all that jazz which can result in disabling pain and in my case an emergency surgery from time to time. I also suffer from a mild form of PTSD. So, with those alone handling high stress loads can be very hard on my mental and physical well being.

Ok, so I was a 24 year old first generation college student (first person in my family to go to college) disabled lower class person wanting a higher education. Seems logical right? Well, once I got accepted to the university, I chose to change my major to Architecture, I had taken an intro class for general ed and fell inlove. My beginning of my first year was great! Lots of lectures and reading. Aside from my tuition multiplying literally 3x from my community college tuition which did not affect my financial aid disbursement, I was fairly stress free. Now keep in mind, my partner and I are both working 20-30 hour weeks to make ends meet while taking 12-14 credits. Its basically having 2 full time jobs. Anyway, the last term of my first year came around-my first studio class. I was so excited! Time to actually do architecture! I got the syllabus and was told was supplies were needed to be successful in the class. I was also told that doing all of the requirements for the assignment would result in a C grade, if any grade above that was desired extra work had to be put in. I thought, no biggie, bring it on. The next thing she said was, "absolutely no sleeping in the studio!" Thats when I had a feeling I was gonna be in trouble. After class I went to the art store got my supplies. I almost started crying as they read my total to me: "$682.80, please." And that was with my student discount and not including all of the future supplies I would need just for that term, which I will tell you now after all the drawings and models ended up being about $2,000. That is a whole lot. These studio classes also require many all-nighters just to have enough time to complete the assignments. Many times, due to having to work outside of school I could not complete my assignments or had to do them with less craft and care than I would like just to turn it in. This year, I recieved less in financial aid, my rent has gone up significantly, tuition went up, and there are new grade requirements: if you get anything less than a B-, youre immediately dropped from the school of Architecture. So, not completing assignments isnt an option anymore. This last term costed my much less money, but once I told my instructor I was out of money, his response was, "well, this is Architecture school." What the fuck am I supposed to do with that!? A roll of Velum (drafting design paper) costs $50-$70 pencils are $2 a piece, models cost like $100 each, the list of tools go on and on. I am already paying $10k a year for tuition, ensuring at the very least $70k of debt including my masters degree which you need to get your Architecture license. And at least $100k with the $500 a month I need to borrow a month for rent. I should not need to add thousands more of that for supplies my school should be providing. And this insane pressure of pulling all nighters to get done the amount of assignments it would take us to do in a whole week last term in 2 days!

The moral of this very long story is that college is not meant for those of us trying to climb the life ladder. Its meant for the already elite. Its meant for kids right out of highschool with parents who make enough money to pay their tuition, their rent, their whole lives! Meant for kids who travel to Europe for the summer instead of working 60 hours a week to make up for the money lost during school cuz you physically cannot work more than 25 hours. Its meant for kids who can call their mommies and complain about how mean their teacher is, not for those of us who cry every night about being afraid of ending up back on the streets in the snap of a finger. Its meant for kids who can work and think about school all day every day, not those of us preoccupied with being able to pay all of our bills and being able to afford food and health insurance.

HOWEVER, even if you are like me, worse, or better, YOU CAN DO IT! I have a damn 3.7 GPA. I may only get 3 hours of sleep a lot, cry almost weekly, probably have lost years of my life due to stress, and feel scared for my health, but shit IM FUCKING DOOOOIN IT! Even though our government, or school presidents, and pretty much everyone in power disagrees, you are so worth it and you are so capable of success no matter how much harder you have to work than everyone else. Because we have to work so much harder now, we will get to party that much harder when we make it. I WILL GRADUATE IN SPITE OF THE SYSTEM! I WILL SUCCEED IN SPITE OF THE SYSTEM! I WILL CHANGE THE FUCKING WORLD CUZ I AM A BADASS AND CAN DO ANYTHING YOU PRIVELEDGED FUCKS CAN DO, JUST BETTER!

My personal migration story

My father and mother are both first-generation Chinese immigrants.

My father’s family is from Shanghai and Canton. A few years before my father was born, his parents decided to immigrate to America when one of my family members was detained for “re-education” by the Communist regime. My grandparents were doctors in their community, and my father was an excellent student. However, their opportunities were stunted by their unwillingness to join the Communist party.

Without political “connections,” my father’s education was limited to his ability to navigate a harsh system of tests – a supposed meritocracy wherein a set of scores determined a student’s future careers and educational opportunities. Despite political discrimination, my father pushed himself to carve a future for himself in Shanghai, excelling at the tests that began at the end of elementary school. In the end, he achieved a high enough score to be admitted to Fudan University – the MIT of Shanghai – where he planned to study Applied Mathemathics.

That’s when the immigration papers came.

My family gambled everything they had – my father’s college degree, my grandparents’ careers, their political safety – when they came to America 40 years ago. My grandparents lost their license to practice medicine and have worked as restaurant waiters and night-shift burger flippers ever since. As for my father, he spent two years working as a busboy to scrape together the tuition for an adult college in Oakland. After earning an Associate’s Degree in Mathematics at Laney College, he transferred to UC Berkeley as a Computer Science major.

Besides spending innumerable patient hours teaching my brother and I Physics and Mathematics, my father works tirelessly at the job he holds now, as a software engineer at Oracle. He still suffers from guilt and feels personally responsible for forcing my grandparents into service jobs in a country they cannot navigate.

My mother’s family is from a farming village in Canton. My mother’s father was a farmer and my grandmother was a schoolteacher. She grew up under the roof of a newspaper-lined shack, where oil candles and coal fires substituted electricity and the cries of crickets and drumbeats serenaded the night. She spent her childhood catching frogs and crafting “Made in China” products – cheap paper lanterns, fireworks, and dried vegetables – that would be packaged and sold to big American companies for extra money.

When she was eight years old, her family moved to Hong Kong and then Oakland – ten years ahead of my father – in an effort to escape rural poverty and social immobility. Without money to afford housing, my grandparents started working at janitors in a private school, allowing my mother and her siblings to live under the stairs of the school in the janitor’s closet. At night, they would emerge to sleep on the desks in the classrooms, clean up at the break of dawn, and slip back into the closet. Eventually, my grandmother became a seamstress at a laundromat, and they were able to collect enough money to afford a small apartment and send my mother to school. She would spend the nights doing her homework and cutting the loose threads from my grandmother’s finished work.

Despite her rough childhood, my mother is the most tender, loving, and funny woman imaginable. She too graduated with a Computer Science degree from Berkeley and met my father a few years later. ALEPPO, Syria--In eastern Aleppo, bodies still lie under the rubble, graveyards are full, people are short of electricity and bread, and some children take classes in mosques because their schools have been ruined by war.

Seven months after the army drove rebels from their stronghold in the Syrian city, the state looks paper thin there, with most services seen by Reuters provided by residents or with help from international aid agencies or local charities.

Aleppo was Syria’s most populous city and industrial engine before the war and its recapture delivered President Bashar al-Assad his biggest in a string of battlefield victories.

Its recovery would not just be symbolic of Assad’s improving fortunes, but a signal that the Syrian state was capable of revival after years of weakness.

The United Nations says about 200,000 people have returned to east Aleppo after it emptied during the fighting, mostly from temporary accommodation in areas held by the government.

However in al-Kalasa district, which Reuters visited in both early February and mid July with a government official who was present during some interviews with residents, the city’s recovery seemed slow and largely out of state hands.

Electricity came from private generators, water from wells or tanks filled by aid agencies, bread from charities, and basic education and healthcare with help from the United Nations.

The government removed mountains of rubble from main streets after the fighting, and Aleppo’s assistant governor told Reuters the state was ultimately responsible for the services provided by aid agencies.

But in Kalasa, retaken in December amid a furious bombardment with help from Russia and Iran, the strongest signs of the state’s presence were a concrete checkpoint and a poster of Assad pledging: “We will rebuild”.

After six years of war, his state is in tatters. Large parts of the country remain outside its control. Western sanctions have hobbled the economy. Water and power services are in ruins, road networks wrecked and hundreds of thousands of working-age men remain under arms.

Eight-year-old Ghassan Batash would have attended the Yarmouk and Sabbagh school but it is unusable.

Its walls still carry the logo of Jaish al-Islam, a rebel faction that made the school its base. In the library stands a “hell cannon” or homemade mortar.

In the schoolyard, two big craters show where air strikes targeted rebel fighters, wrecking classrooms.

It left Ghassan, who wants to be a soldier when he grows up and likes playing soccer in the street, with the choice of walking to school elsewhere or going to the mosque.

Less than a quarter of east Aleppo’s 200 schools are working, said Abdulghani al-Qasab, the assistant governor, adding that the government is working with the United Nations to rehabilitate 100 more.

In the mosque, Imam Abdulrahman Dawkha said he provided Arabic tuition for 250 boys and girls.

Ghassan’s father, Ayad, says he wants his son to return to the national school system as soon as possible, something he hopes will be possible by September. But, for now, he is just happy that he is learning Arabic.

When Reuters last visited Kalasa, Ayad was clearing rubble by hand from al-Mouassassi street, where his family shared a house with other relatives.

There was no electricity or water and the family relied on paraffin lamps for light and on wood foraged by the children from ruined houses for warmth.

But Ayad says the situation is much better now than it was in February and he believes the government is responsible for that.

In his mother Heyam’s flat, there is still no door except a plastic sheet, but a cable to the local generator means she has a light bulb, a fan and a television.

She proudly presented a plate of traditional biscuits she had made for the Eid al-Fitr religious festival. “It’s the first Eid since the war began that feels like Eid and the first one we’ve had back in our house, so I wanted to do everything properly,” she said.

Much of the rubble around Kalasa is gone and the district feels livelier.

Almost everybody Reuters spoke to there and elsewhere in Aleppo complained about the lack of electricity and water. The city power station was destroyed but pylons are being built to carry electricity to the city.

The assistant governor, Qasab, said he believed the power situation would improve in August.

In Kalasa, most streets were missing at least one house through bombardment with many others uninhabitable.

One area of alleyways near Mouassassi street was completely razed and neighbors said five bodies were still buried there. Grieving relatives came each day to cry and say prayers over the bomb site.

3. Apply for the Canadian student visa

Have no criminal record;

According to recent visa regulations, if you have a family member working or applying for a work permit in Canada, the application for your study permit will be processed in two weeks.You may renew or extend your study permit, if you wish to continue your studies or if your programme has an extension or if you change your school. The study permit expires ninety days after your studies are finished when you receive a notification of the programme completion.

How Trump's China Policy Can Put Americans First

When R. Rex Parris, the Republican mayor of Lancaster, California, wanted to revamp local manufacturing and move his city toward renewable energy, he turned to an unlikely ally: China.

Lancaster is a working-class desert town north of Los Angeles ― not exactly a bustling center of global commerce. But Parris cajoled the Chinese electric vehicle company BYD into building a local factory for electric buses. To court the firm, Parris made multiple trips to China, cut down the city’s lengthy permitting process and directly matched BYD with an RV factory in search of a new owner.

The refurbished BYD bus factory now employs hundreds of welders, painters and engineers, and Lancaster is on its way to an entirely electric and locally built fleet of city buses, made possible by Chinese investment. Last fall, the company broke ground on the third phase of the factory, which will add tens of thousands of square feet of new production space.

Mayor Parris’s China outreach stands in stark contrast to the nativist and protectionist rhetoric coming out of the White House. President Donald Trump has argued for a blanket 45 percent tariff on imports from China. He believes this will push American companies manufacturing in China to move factories and jobs back to the U.S. ― or at least scare Chinese leaders into other concessions. But in actuality, a border tax would backfire. Companies would duck tariffs by moving to Southeast Asia, and prices for everyday goods would rise for Americans.

Instead of putting the kibosh on free trade, Trump should take inspiration for U.S.-China policy from local leaders like Parris. Right now, entrepreneurial American mayors are doing the grunt work to capitalize on a massive boom in Chinese outbound investment, tourism and immigration. They’re traveling to China to promote land for development, businesses for investment and cities for tourism.

Part pitchmen and part policymakers, mayors have the incentives and the flexibility needed to entice Chinese investors. In a small town, every new storefront counts, and mayors are free from the paralyzing weight of global geopolitical machinations. They don’t lose sleep over the South China Sea or issue provocative statements about Taiwan. Their careers ride on getting things done in their jurisdiction: creating jobs, housing, safe streets and good schools.

A recent wave of outbound Chinese citizens and capital is helping them do just that. In 2016, Chinese acquisitions and investments in U.S. companies tripled to $45.6 billion. Chinese families purchased U.S. homes worth $27.3 billion ― greater than the next four countries combined. In the San Francisco Bay Area, Boston, Miami and beyond, Chinese developers are funding very large real estate developments on land that previously lay fallow for years; the Bay Area developments include some affordable housing.

Chinese tourism to the U.S. grew by nearly 15 percent in 2016, to 3 million visitors, with each spending an average of $2,500 on shopping, restaurants and hotels. Last year, a record-breaking 330,000 Chinese students ― many of them paying full tuition ― enrolled at American colleges that have been gutted by funding cuts.

Entrepreneurial American mayors are doing the grunt work to capitalize on a massive boom in Chinese investment and immigration.

Mayors aren’t alone in pushing this hyper-localization of U.S.-China relations. Working alongside them are proactive governors, county supervisors, university presidents and environmental regulators, all reaching out to Chinese counterparts in search of investment and cooperation that will make an impact on the ground. These grassroots ties are knocking the Sino-U.S. narrative down from the pedestal of great power politics. The engine room of the relationship has moved from the Politburo to PTA meetings, from the White House to City Hall.

But when international relations mix with neighborhood politics, the results can be volatile. China’s growing footprint on U.S. soil is already generating anxiety among Americans. As Chinese all-cash homebuyers snap up properties, longtime renters fear being priced out of their own neighborhoods. Surging enrollment of Chinese students at public universities has sparked criticism from locals that admission is being auctioned off to the highest bidder. Chinese investors have ruffled feathers from Alabama to San Francisco for injecting a heavy dose of Chinese culture into the workplace or failing to understand local laws.

Parris’s own ambitions haven’t been free from controversy. Shortly after BYD opened its electric bus factory, locals lashed out at his next China plan: subsidizing an underfunded local hospital by bringing in Chinese “birth tourists,” wealthy women who get U.S. citizenship for their child by giving birth on American soil. When word of Parris’ plan got out, local papers filled with a cartoon of Chinese soldiers goose-stepping into Lancaster, Mao’s Little Red Book in one hand and newborn babies in the other. Parris was forced to abandon the plan.

Then BYD ran into its own problems when a raid by the California labor commissioner led to accusations that the company was paying Chinese workers below minimum wage. Local union activists protested outside BYD’s Los Angeles headquarters, decrying the city’s courtship of the company. The labor commissioner later dropped nearly all the charges, but the public relations debacle exposed both how unprepared some Chinese companies are for American civil society and how deep suspicion of foreign investors can run. 

China’s presence in America comes with frictions. Chinese factories are creating jobs in manufacturing towns, but they’re also rubbing up against labor standards. Tuition from Chinese students is keeping some public universities afloat, but it’s also heightening competition for spots at those schools. Chinese developers are kickstarting stagnant real estate projects, but Chinese homebuyers are driving up prices in those same neighborhoods.

These thorny tradeoffs are best dealt with on a local level by mayors embedded in their communities and responsive to their constituents’ needs. Mayors know that working Americans care more about jobs and housing than posturing on trade or territorial claims in distant seas. If Trump wants to put Americans first when it comes to China, he can start by letting America’s mayors take the lead.
