Aside from all of the actual real world terrifying reasons that tik tok being banned is horrible, I'm also just really sad to not be able to use it because tiktoks, in my opinion, have always been such a good way to showcase cosplays. And logically I know that I could just lip sync to a clip of a a song and post it wherever I want, but it was formatted for tiktok. It had such a lively cosplay community. Before, most online cosplay content was photography, which of course will always have its place and is beautiful. But when I was active on tiktok, it was the most fun I've had cosplaying in a long time, and it really allowed for people to try stuff out without committing to wearing it out in public. You could just throw on a closet cosplay or do a makeup only cosplay and sit all cozy in your room and make silly videos, or you could dress from head to toe in the most screen accurate or over accessorized masterpiece and lip synce to some fitting dialogue. I know it kinda pushed cosplay into the mainstream, which caused lots of weird discourse and unnecessary drama, but it also was just fun? Like, I don't know - posting stuff like that on Instagram or YouTube shorts just won't work the same. Especially because duets were such a big part of the cosplay culture on tiktok, and I adore how collaborative it all was! Idk I'm just gonna miss it, especially knowing that the app will continue to exist, just without such a large portion of its users able to be in it.

By the way, because I just found myself using this again - if you want to backup your blog, I really recommend using tumblr-utils as described in this document! I originally wanted to reblog the post where I first found this, but it was somewhere further down a reblog chain and apparently the op either disabled reblogs or deleted it, since it didn't work. So I'm just sharing the link to the document (written by user @/magz) here:

It's genuinely so useful, I've used to use Tumblr's own export feature but once a blog reaches a certain size this just takes super long (mine took literal days until it was ready to download), whereas here it was just a couple minutes, plus the folder as a whole is much smaller too. And if you set it up correctly (with incremental saves, which is also explained in the document) you don't need to download the entire thing every time!

Personally I did run into two smaller issues, one being that the download of embedded Youtube videos didn't work for me (despite running pip install youtube-dl). Maybe it's just a me issue that I missed something on the install, otherwise I could imagine that maybe there's some compatibility problem between the current versions of tumblr-utils and the youtube downloader.

The other, very minor issue (which isn't even an issue per se, more like a preference) is that there is no css styling applied on my backup, when I open the html file, so it looks like a really old website like straight from the 90s😅 I was mainly a bit confused about whether I had an error or it was supposed to be like that, because a screenshot in magz' document showed that their page apparently has some styling applied to it. I still need to look more into the documentation (btw, here is also the documentation on github directly, though I think the most important features are included in the document anyway), but as it looks you can add your own styling by either adding an override.css file to change some of the existing styles, or add your own entirely by adding a custom.css file. It would be super handy if there was also a way to easily pull your current styling from your blog to copy-paste it in there, but I haven't researched yet if such a feature exists (if you know anything I'd be happy about additions!).

But one of the best features for me was that it also allows you to export your likes. I'm sure I'm not the only one who sometimes runs into this problem that you like something, but maybe feel too embarrassed to reblog it, or may not want to do so for another reason (e.g. it's something nsfw, but you generally never share nsfw content on your own blog). [Btw I still encourage you to reblog posts when you can, as it will usually make the op happy :D But I absolutely understand why you won't sometimes.] Problem is that when the original poster deletes it at some point, it will be gone and you'll have no way of getting it back. However with tumblr-utils you can export your likes the same as your own blog. Mind you that it will have the same name as your blog, but will only contain your likes and not your own posts, so the way I did it was inside of my tumblr_backup folder, I made a likes folder and then just downloaded it into there, like this:

I just wanted to point out this feature specifically because I actually completely missed it when I first started using this method of backing up my blog. I looked into the document again today because I wasn't entirely sure about the whole process anymore and suddenly spotted that likes flag and was like "👀👀 this has been here the entire time and I didn't use it yet??!" One thing to be noted is that your likes will have to be public for the download, otherwise it won't work, however you can of course just set them to public for the time it takes you to download them (which in my case was a couple minutes for about 4000 posts) and then make them private again, and all should be fine.

All credit goes of course to the developer(s) behind tumblr-utils and to magz for writing this instruction document, but I think that maybe this post helps at least some of my own mutuals who might not know of this amazing tool yet!

“A new channel”

He can't sleep. There is methods to quiet a mind, but...nothing really feels like it works.

He's waited forever inside this tent. Tossing, turning, he never could just stay still. Phone next to his sleeping bag, if he wakes it up for a moment... about half an hour has past, huh?

A long sigh. At least it means the other three should be asleep. Prompto grabs his camera(being 5 inches apart from it gave him a sense of unease), crawling out of the sleeping bag, to the zipper - zzzzzzzt! - and thus the cold night air is invited in.

The faint smell of burnt wood comes from the campfire. A few embers dimly glow, showing its time for this world is not long.

As he leaves his tent, he catches himself staring at it for far too long. Eventually he slowly holds the camera up, turning it on, and viewing the embers from it.

"You did... super well. I mean... you kept on as long as you did, glowing brightly, keeping them warm, sheltering us...until they didn't need you anymore..."

Crickets chirp. Frogs croak. The young man stares another moment longer, then, click! takes a picture. His eyes stayed glued to his camera as he then walks.

"...When do you think I'll be like you? A...Am I...already...?"

His throat hurts. His eyes sting. Yet, he smiles, and chuckles.

"Hashtag lame, huh? You don't want to hear from a loser like me in your final moments."

There's a whole nature outside. Trees, plants, swirls and swirls of stars. A volcanic mountain in the distance. Still, as he slowly(and hopefully quietly) paces about camp,

"...I can't burn out like you. Noct...you know...the guy in that tent," one hand lets go of the camera to wave vaguely in a direction, "we talked, the other night. ...He... He said burning like this is its own kind of strength. He...he somehow thinks I'm...strong, for it. ...I-I don't really feel like it - strength's Gladio's whole thing..."

He trails off, continuing his walk.

"...He thinks I'm strong. That's all that matters, right? I'll just have to keep everything up. This is my strength."

He isn't convincing himself. How he managed to fool his best friend into saying such a thing, he'll never understand.

"Do you... I don't know. It feels kinda weird just leaving you alone. Do you-"

Finally does he look up from the camera screen. There's no more light from the wood. Dead. Burnt up. Only charcoal, now.

...Selfish. It feels selfish. He took up its final moments and all he did was rant.

The screen is looked at again, when the fire was still faintly burning. No, its not dead. See? It was alive then, so it's alive now. He can ask what the fire wants, in its last moments.

...what the fire wants. That's...stupid. Fire burns for others, not itself, right? The fire wants what its company wants. So...so...

His throat feels too tight. When he opens his mouth, only a broken sob comes out.

A pale freckled hand quickly moves over his mouth, glancing to the tents. Did he wake anyone?

it looks like a lot of the writers who use tumblr professionally are working to put together a new space for us, so once i know which website/app they've settled on, i Will probably pop over there.

i don't think there's ever going to be a site with the same level of functionality for visual artists, photographers, writers, and bloggers alike. so since i'm a writer i'm gonna pick my battles and follow the writers where they go.

i'm also likely to curate an RSS feed so i can follow artists and photographers and local bloggers on twitter and instagram. but as for following me somewhere, i'm just waiting to find out. i think collective organization of writers is better than panicking and signing up for like 12 different microsites at once.

i'll keep you guys posted. hopefully wherever i go will support my fandom shitposting and personal blogging. and of course i'll still be on ao3 at elliptical when you want my non-shitpost writing.
