hey there! i’m sorry, i genuinely have no idea how to do this and you posted about it, so i was wondering— if it’s not too much trouble, could you please explain how you back up your tumblr blog? i have like five blogs and idk how to save them anywhere😭

yes of course!! you're not the only person who just asked me this so don't worry. i think it's pretty important for us all to archive our tumblr blogs before the feature breaks in the future. this will give you a zip file that has copies of your original posts and reblogged media, as well as HTML logs of your DMs (and maybe asks, i'm not sure).

the feature is only available on a web browser so you're gonna have to get out your computer.

on the left side of the desktop screen, you'll see a menu. you want to click on settings:

it's here, specifically:

on the right-hand side of the settings page, you'll see a long menu. underneath you'll see "blogs."

scroll down to 'Blogs.' then click on the blog that you want to back up.

on your blog page, you're gonna scroll all the way down to the bottom. the bottom of the page should look like this:

you're gonna click on the button to export your blog. you can navigate away from the page while it's processing without losing your progress. when the export is complete, you'll receive an email:

^these are screenshots from when i archived my blog two years ago, the current archive is still processing for me.

and that's it!

the feature might already be broken for some people.... i know one of my partners has trouble using it. if it helps, i used google chrome for this. i know chrome is the devil but like, if you gotta then you gotta.

Genuine question here: I've backed up this blog before, but it was just a series of links to posts and shit. Am I doing it wrong? I just want like. A file to download with my stuff. I'm confused.

mostly just posting this for myself in the future, but since the original tumblr-utils has some issues because of it being in python 2, someone forked it with minimal edits to make it work perfectly in python 3 here. i was somehow able to get the original to work a few months ago on a macbook, but it took a lot of effort and looking around for fixes to various incompatibilities. the fork is a lot more straight-forward and just works right out of the box (or it did for me on linux, at least)

Hi Magz, just letting you know that in your useful guide to backing up Tumblr blogs, the youtube-dl part of the tumblr-utils method has been taken down. Also, It's possible I've done something wrong, but tumblr completely revamped how api ids work, calling them things like consumer keys, and that may be why I can't get tumblr-utils to work.

so was check download page ... problem that download link for option 2 on how get youtube-dl have "access denied" for download link, yes? (from youtube copyright takedown probs)

have update link, be github release page, instead.

Have check and no. they just change how API key name. magz API key exact same in same Tumblr App register, and also when try register new app - API key exact same one too. Which still work.

Have update how API key called in doc now, tho.

And when run tumblr-utils of July 2023 from last major Tumblr backup doc update with same key, it work. Have try new release tumblr-utils of today in case, with just Python 3 in system like those who follow new instruction in Magz Tumblr backup doc would have just Python 3, and it work. (also have troubleshoot section for python thing added from before)

Command used for download just 10 posts (-n 10), with just python 3 as example: python tumblr_backup.py -n 10 magz

Something else is was cause issue. DM magz.

yesterday I found that tumblr has a glitch where it deletes the whole user account without warning, so I decided to request a backup of my blog, just in case.

20 HOURS later, I finally got the link to download it. I clicked it one hour ago, the download is already almost 35GB (and counting) and still stays "Unkown time left".

I used to back up my tumblr to Soup dot io (you could export/import your blog over to them) so I got curious because I just went to the website and someone else owns it now. Anyway
