I stumbled upon this today and thought I would share: if you're an Amazon Prime member, in celebration of Prime Day/Month, you can currently get Baldur's Gate II, Neverwinter Nights (Enhanced Edition) and many other classic pc games for free to own forever if you claim the code by the deadline (which varies by game, but are different days in July mostly). These are not Steam codes; but rather, codes for Amazon's gaming app, or for a different 3rd party gaming site which will provide the file download for you.

Just thought I'd let people know as Baldur's Gate III is coming out soon and some people might want to play its immediate successor and/or a related title before the release :)

The Underdark sequence is easily my favorite part of Baldur's Gate II.
Your characters disguise themselves as drow to go through Ust Natha to get a silver dragon's eggs.
After performing a series of tasks, the more questionable of which can be resolved peacefully with clever dialogue options, you gain the trust of the Matron Mother. You can then interfere with the summoning of a demon, which you can do in a way that screws over the Matron Mother, her daughter, or both. There's also unique dialogue in this part of the game if you bring Viconia along! She'll have helpful advice for blending in with the drow.
Also, fun fact! Because drow society is matriarchal, there is gender-specific dialogue! I ought to replay the game as a male character sometime, I bet it'll be fun to see how differently my character is treated!
Something about the almost spy-like deceptions you do to stay alive and achieve your goal feels exciting and like you're pulling off something clever. Probably why I also liked the part of Siege of Dragonspear where you infiltrate Dragonspear Castle.

Since I spotted the BG2 mod ask, I hope I'm allowed to send this in. I always refrain because the blog focuses more on your recent (COG-related) writing. BUT BG2 Nate was the first time I experienced a same-sex relationship in a game. The first time I could. And it was such an experience seeing someone *like me* present. I always have a soft spot for the mod for that reason. Faren, of course, is an staple if I replay. Enjoying your Creme-series these days feels like coming full circle. Thank you
You are absolutely allowed to send this in and I am SO happy to talk about my non CoG writing as long as it doesn't step on any NDAs! (and if a question ever did, I'd just say "sorry, NDA" or not answer - no harm done!)
ANYway now that's out of the way, this was just extraordinarily lovely to hear. I am literally getting misty-eyed in a coffee shop and... yes. It honestly means a huge amount.
BG2 mods were among the first ways my wife and I encountered gay and bisexual characters in games too; there were a couple of people in Fallout 2 and The Temple of Elemental Evil but they did not have much story to them, and The Sims 2 and Jade Empire weren't even out when we started making Nathaniel. It's absolutely wild seeing how much we have these days, though it's my dear hope that we'll look back on 2023 in twenty years time and go "wow, that was barely anything, look at how much more there is now".
Thank you so much.

Computer Gaming World January 2001
Along with its look back at the best games of the year, this issue's editorial had George Jones offering predictions including "DUKE NUKEM FOREVER won't ship until very late in the year." One article looked at a "Cyber Olympics" in South Korea, mentioning that the historically rooted hostility between Japan and Korea had kept video game consoles out of the country and made computer gaming more popular there.

Back in my day, we spent hours searching for a picture to use as an avatar for our Bhaalspawn. Not like you kids today with your customization.
The character model was tiny, and you could change the colors of their skin, hair, and clothes. That's it! We used our imagination!
