Im sorry if this is a dumb question but what does skeb style mean? ;n;
not dumb at all, it's a relatively new phenomenon that got its name from the japanese commission website, skeb!
the general concept of skeb is that you send an artist the character(s) you'd like drawn, and then let them have artistic liberty on how they illustrate that character (so no WIPs or revisions unless there's a mistake)!
the idea was really widely liked, so artists outside of japan also started adopting it with their own variations!
here's an illustrated crash-course:

#answers#anon#vgen#skeb#basically think of it like a surprise commission!#the general idea can also always be found in my commission descriptions! ⸜( ´ ꒳ ` )⸝#the beauty of skeb is that it allowed people outside of japan to support japanese artists w/o a language barrier!!#and i think western artists really enjoyed the more flexible nature of skeb-like commissions#they're great if you really like an artist's style & trust them to create something you'll like!

"the reason adrien is just instantly good at everything he tries is because he is programmed to be that way as a senti" aside from the fact that i don't think that's how it works (and also while he was decent at everything he tried with marinette he wasn't instantly good at all of them, and what marinette actually said to him was that he could improve in anything with practice but it was a great first attempt) did we all collectively forget about how adrien actually canonically isn't the best singer?

#adrien agreste#miraculous#miraculous ladybug#ml s6 spoilers#ml season 6#ml climatiqueen#miraculous spoilers#ml spoilers#actually never saw that episode in french so maybe the french voice actor did a better job idk but given that adrien doesn't#usually sing for kitty section or ever the way i saw it was he used his poetry writing skills to write a song#and as a songwriter he was probably great but being a good lyricist doesn't make you a great singer obviously#so to me that's what his deal is#i actually like that throughout this show adrien has some things he picks up easily and some things he has to work on and might never do as#well as people with more experience#i also think as a kids show the lesson they want to put out is anyone can improve with effort and attempt#like he fumbled that science lab experiment but enjoys particle physics#languages tend to come easily to him precisely because it's been something he was forced to do since he was young#a lot of polygots especially if they start young develop skills and see linguistic patterns and iirc he already knew some#japanese from anime and his familiarity with mandarin should help#but i love that he took it further and took on morse code like the cute nerd he is#and now he's studying ancient greek for fun??? what a cute#marinette says his macarons tasted fine but we saw him struggle with the creme#what i mean to say is#he has discipline (basically second nature now) and dedication so he can do well but it DOES require effort#and i think it dismisses how much adrien TRIES or the fact that a lot of skills he was taught to have since a young age aid him#and i just don't think all sentis are “perfect” in an AI robotic way (even if that's how their parents wished they were)#it also just lessens his humanity and iirc the writers have stated multiple times that they are still human#(we can discuss how inconsistent ml is about sentis in general but eh idc for that conversation tbh agdhsjsjks)#anyway adrien will forever be#my nerdy son i love him so much

this might already exist (and if it does please send it my way i want to read it) but XY AU where language barriers exist.
Ash is fluent in Japanese and has decent Galarian (Iris and Cilan helped fill in a lot of gaps from school).
Serena is Kalosian but went out of her way to learn Japanese after that summer camp.
Clemont is fluent in Kalosian, has passable Galarian, and knows enough Paldean and Japanese for challengers (but usually uses a translation tool anyway. which is currently stuck in the gym thanks to Clembot).
Bonnie only knows Kalosian and a couple random Galarian phrases.
i might make loose comic thoughts on it but like. ash shows up in kalos with 0 knowledge of the language aside from MAYBE a few basic things from Alexa like "hello" and "i want to battle". two people with wildly different accents trying to speak the same secondary language until serena shows up and can more effectively communicate some thoughts that get lost in translation. bonnie and ash half-miming to communicate early on but still getting equally excited about pokemon things. an extra layer of "ash does not know miette is flirting with him" cause she thinks he knows at least some kalosian. do you see my vision
(important anniversary addition: if you are possessed to make this for whatever reason please PLEASE tag me i want to see it)
#pokemon#anipoke#pokemon xy#ash ketchum#ash pokemon#serena pokemon#gym leader clemont#clemont pokemon#bonnie pokemon#i think gym leaders are probably required to know at least a few basics in other languages just in case foreign trainers show up#maybe not emphasized as much in kalos but somewhere like galar or paldea?? very much so.#there's totally more things that would be fun with language barrier stuff but i haven't watched most of kalos#(ash does pick up some in the end. it will not stop him from butchering the language later though.)#(still debating if galarian should be the default like english is in our world or if japanese could be the “common” language in their world

also if you want more yuri. go read the side stories for ena’s card because OH MY GOD 😭😭😭
links and summaries 👇🏻
part 1 is set when she’s still looking for mizuki and just thinks back on one of THEIR DATES at the mall…
part 2 starts with ena thinking back of the art school assignment (make a painting about “inner peace / peace of mind”) and she thinks of how all of niigo just went to have lunch at the usual diner and they were talking and bantering as usual. then kanamafu go home and mizuena hang out some more and the banter and shop and check out the places with the new stuff they talked about before mizuki shut herself in her room and hasnt had a chance to check out yet 😭 and at home ena says
“eating together, bantering about stupid things, walking around and shopping till we are exhausted… it’s the same as before, just our daily life.” and then in the SOFTEST TONE (minoringo when i catch you..) she says “i get to talk and be with mizuki properly… this daily life is good… this daily is the most comfortable… i feel like i can see the inner peace i want to draw” LESBOTRON 6000 YOU’RE KILLING ME
#again the machine translation is INSANELY bad but the language is not too hard if u know even just some basic japanese for real#anyway im dead#mizuena#ena5#project sekai#niigo#ena shinonome#mizuki akiyama#mzen#prsk#mine#mzen posting

american cryptid youtubers will make cryptid obsession their whole personality and build their entire channel around how much they love cryptids but they'll still refuse to learn how to pronounce the names of creatures that they make their money off if said creature is from a non-english country. truly amazing display of casual anglo-centrism and dismissal of other cultures.
#i've unfollowed channels for this before and wendigoon is on thin fucking ice#how the fuck do you mispronounce ningen#literally you need the most basic auditory familiarity with japanese language to know how to say it#jamble ramble

voicevox humming might also be good for those looking weird metallic noisy vocal synths if they're willing to play with the unpredictability of it because i had akashi on the absolutely wrong range setting for this song and he started breaking down like faulty motor
#he shoulda been at like -10 or somewhere around there but he was at -6#breathier gentle voices+emotions are more effective in humming if you want this echoey metal scraping sound#so like akashi and nurse type t are pretty quiet. and ryuusei has a thousand emotion modes and half of them are whispery#also unrelated since this song has a bunch of glottal stops i decided to finally check if っ works as a phoneme#it does. i dont know why i wasnt sure. its a text-to-speech software primarily and that is. an important part of japanese speech LOL#but it does work in humming which is nice! also unrelated but i just found out the technical name for っ is sokuon#my japanese teachers always just the less fancy term chisai tsu or small tsu depending on language theyre speaking in the moment#its like how i didnt know what a cedilla was called in english for years. i learned about it in school first et en français its cédille#thats how i got a little sweet taste of basic linguistic concepts as a kid in general actually. through language learning classes#you learn a grammar thing for one language and ur like holy shit. what is that. where can i learn more. and then you start googling <3

ok i got another one
i can’t seem to find a comprehensive list of dub languages online rn, these are the audio options i can select on my netflix account – not included in the poll but also available to me are hindi, indonesian, thai and a japanese audio description. idk tho if those are all that were produced or if there’s more options that are just not available in my region, lmk if there’s something else i missed here! also if you’ve listened to/watched multiple of these options do kindly tell which one(s) you like best!
#personally im a original language with sub truther. not just with anime but in general#rlly tho i hope this gets around bc. well the results could provide some important insights on a lot of discourse in the fandom. imo#dungeon meshi#delicious in dungeon#i uh. for what it’s worth i really don’t like the english dub i think it sounds jarring and weird#german one is pretty hit or miss i’ve watched a few scenes from different episodes and some i liked and other. not so much#most of the VAs are good but don’t really fit their respective characters#french one is pretty good! also sounds like they put more budget/professional VAs into that one. which is no surprise#given how they are about anything comic or cartoon in france#i also listened into italian and spanish i think but. i forgor#other languages that i dont speak at all are harder to judge so haven’t checked those yet#with japanese i have atleast a very basic understanding of grammar and some common vocabulary and phrases

Guys I like kinda need to be good at the deciphering system in Homicipher because I am straight a linguistics major; like if the monster dating simulator game defeats me through its use of intermixing SOV and SVO then I am COOKED for my syntax exam
#homicipher#ramblings#my syntax exam is in like 36 hours#Homicipher can be counted as syntax practice right?? right???#gurl if I get an A- in that class I’m like dropping my major idc#I love syntax and thinking of words and whatever#but unfortunately the East Asian language I’m learning is heavily case-based#y’know the monster language is basically a conlang I wonder if the creator did any linguistic research??#maybe the translation messed some of it up or maybe it’s just very similar to Japanese I mean it’s more SOV imo

Speaking as someone who loves Dungeon Meshi and usually watches subbed anime?
Watch the dub instead.
#Dungeon Meshi#Normally I'm somewhat of a subs purist but the subs for the Japanese language version are fucking atrocious#They basically removed all of the jokes - ALL of them#The dub meanwhile has everything from the “man eating onions” joke to Senshi mentioning something gives you the runs#And I KNOW they've got to still be there in the actual Japanese language because they wouldn't just rewrite shit wholesale#Especially to be LESS FUNNY#Also it has my man Sungwon Cho in it you go Sungwon Cho#Shit Terry Says

Me, first learning kana: Wow I love how straightforward Japanese pronunciation is, it's really nice to not have to wonder how things are pronounced.
Me, learning kanji: oh what the fuck actually
Me, now learning about the types of keigo and how they affect conjugation and pronunciation:

#did you know that there's levels of formality to japanese speech?#which don't just determine the words you use and your tone of voice but also the conjugation and pronunciation!#basic words like ''eat'' dound entirely different based on who you're speaking to!#the standard formality levels are polite (keigo) - casual - rude#and keigo has four (or five depending on who you ask) subtypes! with varying levels of formality and unique pronounciations!#and those types are standard formal (what language lessons start out by teaching)#elevating the other person's status (when talking about someone who is a higher social rank than you)#humbling yourself (when talking about yourself to or in comparison to someone who is a higher social rank than you)#and humbling yourself (when there isn't really anyone who is a higher social rank than you but you want to sound polite and not braggy)#and depending on who you ask there's also a ''beautifying'' one where you add specific sounds to words to make them sound prettier#like saying お寿司 (o-sushi) instead of just 寿司#there are pronunciations and phrases that are completely unique to each kind of speaking style#and many of them are irregular and have to be memorized individually#i am going to fucking die#日本語の学生#japanese langblr#langblr

Really wanna try to translate at least parts of this letter, but my Japanese is seriously rusty, and I'm absolutely lost at Kanji, so that's probably not gonna happen

Just for fun I ran to my desktop to aid me with Google translate, which isn't perfect. But given that I don't know Japanese myself....
Here's what I found; on my own, with only translate and my existing language skills.
This is wrong:

This is CLOSER, AND MORE INDICATED OF THE CORRECT SUBJECTS OF THE SENTANCE. :

While it isn't one to one, Japanese has a lot of feel and implication, from what I understand. There's a lot of context.
So I tried scanning the fan translations a few times just to see what it said on my own. I broke it down into parts:

AITSU: him, that guy (in this case, Izuku)
The "Nuguenee" part seems to mean "can't wipe it" or "to wipe away"
Kocchi- here
De nuguu - means something like 'take off with "
Eventually, I felt like it wasn't scanning off the screen well enough, and I actually WROTE THE KANJI in the translation of the panel out on paper, which was very interesting bc again, don't know or write Japanese.
But I scanned that:

(The word "if" is covered by the icon)
"IF YOU CANT WIPE IT OFF
I WILL WIPE IT HERE"
Shows that the verbiage used is "wipe," or "to wipe away," but it is SO MUCH CLOSER in spirit to "I'll step in for what he can't handle" and also the use of Aitsu indicated he is talking directly about Izuku.
I GET that the official translator's job is to try to capture the dialogue in a way that FLOWS for the new audience, since Japanese is a very differently constructed language than English.
They are supposed to find a way to translate certain things with keeping the mood and intent of the dialogue.
"OFA couldn't keep you in the ground, but we'll finish the job and then some"???
Where the hell did they get that???
I didn't dig any further back bc it might take a while but everyone has also pointed out that the original dialogue is a direct reference to the apology scene(I know it is in the fan translation but I think it is also being indicated that it is the same in Japanese as well? Pls fact check me of you desire)
So bc it was originally referring back to that scene, there is an added STING that comes with this official translation
And the ADDITIONAL BLOW that is katsuki once again being kind of...pigeon holed into the aggressive, more self-focused kid that he once was...a caricature of his former self, instead of his emotionally upgraded, self assured, "needing to help Izuku or he will perish" self.....instead of letting this moment be a crazy cool declaration about how HE is the one you fuck with when Izuku needs help.
Which like yeah, in itself is a little bit agrandizing, HOWEVER it is literally also serving as a vow or a completion of his vow earlier in the story that he will take on what he can't handle!
It's super important for Katsukis arc! It acted as not only a THREAT to anyone who give Izuku a run for his money and tests the limits of his OFA, but a VOW to Izuku that HE HAS HIS BACK.
He just YELLED ABOUT IT on a battlefield, while Izuku is probably still staring at him with heart eyes.
And ultimately, there is NO REASON THE ORIGNAL TRANSLATION, WHICH PLAYS OFF THE OFFICIAL TRANSLATION OF THE APOLOGY SCENE CANNOT BE USED OFFICIALLY.
It reads properly, and packs a HELL OF A PUNCH EMOTIONALLY. More so than essentially "I'm gonna put you in the ground bc Izuku CAN'T"
It seems like the fan translation kept the literal meaning but added the flavor to make it flow, such as "stepping in" "to handle" and calling Izuku a Nerd. But the official translation just tweaked it by too much to where it just reads differently and most importantly, doesn't carry that punch.
In conclusion, I did a little bit of independent research and decided that YEAH it doesn't make sense why they translated it so wildly different. Other than just wanting Bakugou to remain a frigging caricature, even in the Finale.
#bnha spoilers#which i mean at least they used the word we for putting him in the ground??#maybe sorta implying that he and deku are gonna work together but dammit#this is again based on my shallow knowledge on foreign language reading#of which i do not know japanese#so huge disclaimer#BUT IT LOOKS LIKE I CAME TO THE SAME CONCLUSIONS AS THE FAN TRANSLATORS#bakudeku#caleb critical#i dont usually come for caleb but idk this one got me a bit apicy#its just cus i dont know japanese myself#but like when i can put it into GOOGLE TRANSLATION AND GET SOMETHING DIFFERENT#just let katsuki Bakugou have his undying devotion and get to shout about it okkkk#bakugou katsuki#i hear its usually bakugou getting shafted by translation#basically stop making Bakugou a violent trash mouthed caricature#when he has his huge moments LET HIM HAVE THEM#let him have his emotions

actually speaking of my name, dara, its like fun because it is just 2 very simple syllables so its in all kinds of languages all across the world as a name and as a word. and like. okay usually it means something super nice like super wise or like a gift or like a leader or awesome tree or awesome pearl or rich or fortunate or whatever, stuff like that. so lemme tell you how awesome it was when i found out in some dialects of japanese it means idiot <3
#also the reduplicated form daradara as like. wasting time <3 <3 that ones really funny because i speak kind of slowly when im thinking#such as in japanese class... i do feel like a cartoon character. like one of snow whites dwarves. im Slowly. im Idly.#its so funny i love it. its a great contrast compared to a buddy who was telling me about how in her language my name was like#literally meant wise person but had like connotations of respect and propheticism etc. such a vast two syllables this is#i dont actually know which version i was named. my parents just looked in like a baby naming book or on an early website#and just like picked one that sounded nice. i dont even think they looked at origin or meaning#im PROBABLY named like the hebrew version or maybe a unisex form of the irish version?#but i dont know if that matters when ur parents just like basically randomized ur name <3 i dont pronounce it very nicely tho#i and my family pronounce it like daaaaar (rhymes with car) Rah which is chill and i like it BUT#sometimes i meet someone who's first language is like arabic or serbian or something and they pronunce it so beautifully#with like a softer R and like dah-rah and its soooo nice. but my heavily ontarian daaaaaarrr-rah is fine too <3
