LGBTQ Comic Review - Amongst Us Book 1

A masterful combination of comedy, subtle romance, and incredible sensuality

I make no attempts to hide my complete admiration and infatuation with Shilin Huang's Yuri webcomic Amongst Us. The slice of life AU featuring reimagined versions of the lead characters from fantasy series Carciphona as a lesbian couple has held a special place in my heart for a long time. I named the series one of the best Yuri works of the past one-hundred years, can frequently be found lurking in the author's Twitch streams, and even have a wall in my office dedicated to the artwork of the main couple (or I did before my office became a remote classroom). So, when a Kickstarter by Shilin and Hiveworks Comics launched promising a print version of the work, I was eager to support it financially and promote it with my humble platform. The Kickstarter took place in March, and books were initially estimated for release in May of 2020. However, as you have probably realized by the dates alone, the world went very South around this time. A combination of disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic, a healthy amount of bad luck, and what I am inclined to believe, for various reasons, was some awful mismanagement by Hiveworks led to numerous delays. Indeed, by the time the book finally shipped, I had moved, so my copy arrived a little later as it had to be forwarded. But, at the end of this frustrating and anticipation-building event, I finally have the volume in my hands, and it was worth the wait. While I adore the webcomic, this gorgeous print volume completely enthralls me. The book is absolutely the preferred way to read this spectacular comic.

Before getting into the exquisite details of Amongst Us Book 1: Soulmates, I need to take a minute to praise how well this book is put together. The paperback binding is thick and features amazing spot glass that sparkles in the light. This feature only accentuates the fantastic and bright the cover illustration of main characters Veloce and Blackbird loving holding each other is. The back cover has a simpler but more imaginative illustration of the two flying through the sky, and the character's expressions tell you everything you need to know about this fantastic, odd couple. There are a few things you will notice upon opening the volume. The first is how well Amongst Us made the challenging transition from vertical webcomic to the page. The assembly and paneling are fantastic and clear, and chapters feature stylized illustrations and title cards. You will then see the inside cover, a powerful display that perfectly contrasts the front's glowing and tender love. Finally, there is Shilin's presents moving forward and dedication, where she lovingly dedicates the book to her partner, Kristen.

I assure you, as good as the book's presentation and assembly is, the contents within are even better. Amongst Us follows Veloce and Blackbird's bombastic relationship. The two women are eccentric and striking musicians in their early twenties, and I swear you will never forget them. The slice of life storylines are, per the genre's definition, mundane and include events like shopping at the mall, riding the train, and having lunch with a friend. The charming simplicity of the story serves well to the reactions of the characters. Shilin effortlessly transitions from adorable moments of affection to explosive and hilarious comedy and irresistible and delightful moments of sexual tension; Veloce's neck and jawline alone could topple a monarchy. Often, slice of life works can become dull or repetitive, but these stories and the frequent changes in tone help the reader stay engaged and excited.

Putting slice of life aside for a moment, it is also important to note that Amongst Us is also has an interesting place within the Yuri genre, or "Girl's Love/GL" as it is often called in webcomic circles (originally an analogous term of Boy's Love). Webcomics have often been a bit more adventurous with their storylines and styles than Japanese manga. While the genre rose to popularity in the space thanks to digital manhwa and manhua, some (not all) of the Yuri tropes did not carry over between the similar mediums. Many modern webcomics and webtoons take their inspiration more from manhwa and manhua GL, which has developed its own canon and tropes over the years. However, even for a webcomic, Shilin's work feels somewhat divorced from most other worlds of Yuri. This first volume exists mainly against the Yuri genre's expectations. However, the next book, which flashes back to the couple's origin, undoubtedly is more in line with convention, for better or worse. It feels like the author decided to screw the norms and write a work that she would enjoy, and I am so glad that she did. Veloce and Blackbird are young adults, out of school in an established relationship with no drama. This (sadly) unconventional setting is made all the more irregular because of just how distinctive, and unwonted Blackbird and Veloce are.

Blackbird and Veloce, originally from the fantasy world of Carciphona, take on a new life, literally, in this wonderful modern reimagining and homage. You do not need to be a fan of the original work to enjoy their bizarre and larger-than-life personalities. Indeed, when I read Amongst Us online for the first time, I had not ever even heard of Carciphona. Veloce is the quieter and more stoic of the two, although she is not afraid of showing a more relatable and human side as she reacts to Blackbirds wild antics. Veloce's (not)straight man approach is hilariously sobering. But, her best moments are in those when she lets loose a little bit, like when she is rendered drooling by the promise of her favorite smoothie or in her stoic yet alluring flirtations with Blackbird, only to get close enough to steal a healthy chomp of ice cream.

Blackbird, on her part, is completely insane. She continuously pulls of wild antics like jumping on Veloce to surprise her or singing an especially threatening song after a glorious battle over lunch. However, she is perfectly capable of showing her love and admiration for Veloce in her own cheeky way. However, true to form, each softer or more personal moment between the two is often immediately and perfectly juxtaposed with comedy, with the apparent exception of the book's touching and thoughtful finale. Veloce and Blackbird will both more than please readers individually, but you will fall in love with them as a couple. I must have read this at least a few dozen times between the webtoon and the book, and I am just as enchanted as ever by their loud and unapologetic love.

The ordinary misadventures of Blackbird and Veloce are accompanied by genuinely astounding artwork. No, that statement does not do Shilin's illustrations justice. Veloce and Blackbird lead from the page thanks to stunning, full-color illustrations that detail every moment of hilarity. Every movement from the slightest smirk to the over-the-top dramatizations of regular events thoughtfully and beautifully sprawl across the pages and invite you to stare for hours. Shilin is the only person possible who could make something as simple as someone softly singing Happy Birthday so epic and sultry. Speaking of which, my goddess of Yuri is this work titillating. No, there are no gratuitous scenes, but just the characters leaning over each other or touching the other's chin makes my hands shake. My only small complaint is that some early chapters show their age slightly with noticeably lower quality linework and flatter colors than the dazzling and dynamic work demonstrated towards the end. Still, even on its worst day, Amongst Us looks better than most of its peers and the entirety of its many inferiors.

Amongst Us is nearly the perfect work. It has a uniquely compelling and mirth-inducing way of displaying a young yet very unordinary couple's everyday life. Its characters, from design to personality, are instantly memorable and striking. Despite being ready to rip each other's heads off at the drop of a hat, or rather because of it, Blackbird and Veloce feel the perfect and natural couple we so rarely witness. Shilin's masterful combination of comedy, subtle romance, and incredible sensuality is astounding. This book is worth it for the outstanding and vibrant artwork alone, but its combination with excellent writing create a sonorous and majestic modern romance unlike any other. I believe that Shilin has created something genuinely special here, and I can confidently say that out of the hundreds of webcomics I have read, this one is the pinnacle of its kind and my absolute favorite.

13 GREATEST BATMAN AND SUPERMAN VILLAINS OF ALL TIME.

Superman and Batman are two of the most famous super heroic characters of all time. Being two of the “Big Three” characters in DC comics, they have fought many of the most terrible and smartest villains . With these two characters, each of them being not only more than 75 years old, but having 75 years of non-stop publication, we have 150 years of interesting stories to choose from. Nevertheless, some of their villains are way more epic than others and only a few of them have so much hate and persistence as to follow them through all the possible media: radio, movies, tv, video games, etc…

The three most important criteria for a villain to appear in this list are:

Number of times he or she has fought either one or both Superheroes and maybe the entire Justice League.

If he or she has ever defeated one of them in any way.

How much he or she contributes to the plot being interesting.

Ninth Position.

MXYZPTLK.

A strange and small individual with god-like powers and a mostly disagreeable sense of humor, this fellow has made these two heroes and all the Justice League members sweat more than once. An interesting thing about him is that he cannot be beaten by strength but always by cunning by making him say his strange name backwards (which turns him back to the 5th dimension where he comes from). Thanks to him we had one of the most memorable episodes of the old 80´s "World Greatest Superfriends" tv series, where he transports them to the “The Planet of Oz” in order to make them get the necessary ingredients to make him invulnerable to he effects of saying his name backwards during this story inspired in the old 1900´s “The Magical Wizard of Oz” novel by Frank Baum and W. W. Denslow.

Honorable mention 3:

BENEDICT ASP.

This villain is guilty of kidnapping and literally making Shondra Kinsolving, his adoptive sister and maybe the only woman that Batman has ever loved, mentally insane. This happened during the comics that followed the epic "Knightfall" saga. So, even when Benedict Asp will never be as epic as most of the villains in this list, he is for sure between the ones that have hurt Gotham´s Dark Knight the most.

Fourth Position.

DOOMSDAY

A strange gloved fist with a forearm covered with cables punching to escape from his prison underground, punching on metal , soil and stone until releasing him and allowing us to see a strange figure almost completely covered with a dark green suit with a grayish brown fist and irregular claws protruding from it. A small incautious bird was his first victim, then a tree, then everything he could find including half a dozen Justice League members that he left severely injured before having his epic fight to the death with Superman. This is the way the Doomsday character was introduced to the world during the events of “The Death of Superman” comic story. Since then, Doomsday has been cast as a formidable enemy for Superman and DC heroes in general many times. We have seen him in the Justice League animated series same as in the DC animated movie “Superman/Doomsday” which is inspired in the “The Death of Superman” comic and we see many copies of him fighting Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman (and her fellow amazons) for the “Superman/Batman: Apocalypse” one. So far, maybe, the most interesting version of him was in the “Smallville” TV series where he is the evil side of a person with a “Jekyll/Mr Hyde” personality. His latest appearance is in the “Batman vs Superman” still showing movie.

MeseMoa. - The self-proclaimed idols who began by taking a joke too far are now heading for the Pacifico stage

I’ve done my best to translate it but I’m just a beginner so there are some parts that might not be entirely accurate. Thanks also to @namfonrainwater for the help.

MeseMoa. is a 9 member boys group that was formed when they uploaded a Morning Musume. dance cover video to a video sharing site in 2012. After that video was showered in attention, receiving over 1 million views, in 2013 they took on their former name Musumen. and changed their musical activities into those of a self-produced, "self-proclaimed idol group". In the 7 years since then, they've sold out Tokyo's Nakano Sunplaza, undertaken the 47 prefecture nationwide tour 'Thanks!' in 2016, had great success with their 2018 nationwide tour 'Maze No.9', and are steadily making progress.

Here at Music Natalie we interviewed 8 of them, with Nibansenji absent due to illness. Of course we discussed how the group came to be, as well as the characteristics and selling points of the team, and their excitement towards their solo concert at Pacifico Yokohama in August, which will be their largest capacity concert yet. The conversation that unfolded revealed how friendly their relationship is.

The last dregs of pulp after everything else has been squeezed out

· Thank you for agreeing to your first appearance in Music Natalie!

Nichan & Tomitake: We're really glad to be here! *claps*

Aoi: Some of us have been interviewed as part of Musumen.'s sub-group TrafficLight., but this is our first time as MeseMoa. (You can read the TrafficLight. interview here (in Japanese))

· You have had a long career so far, but could you introduce the group for our readers who don't yet know you…?

Everyone: *waving their hands* It's not really a career!!

Nozakibento: We just spent a long time being unknown.

Nokkuso: It really is just that we have a long history of activities.

· Is that so. *Laughs* First of all, could you tell us how the group came to be?

Shirofuku: I had already been doing dance covers as a hobby, and it was a dance to Morning Musume., a group that I'm a fan of, which became the group's beginning. I wanted to gather a group of people in the same number as Morning Musume.'s members, and the people I spoke to out of the dancers I knew became the current members of our group. When we posted the video, the response was much bigger than expected. We received comments from general viewers as usual, but also from Morning Musume.'s producer Tsunku ♂, and we were invited to perform at various dance events. From there we decided not to limit ourselves to dance overs, but also to release original songs. We steadily continued our live activities as "self-proclaimed idols", and in 2015 we achieved our greatest wish of performing at Nakano Sunplaza. In May this year we celebrated the 7th anniversary of the group's formation, and are now rushing into our 8th year.

· You evolved from a cover dance group to "self-proclaimed idols" and have spent 7 whole years together.

Shirofuku: That's right. But to be honest, we're just a group of people with no talent. You could say we're like the last dregs of pulp that remain after everything else has been squeezed out……

Everyone: Ahahaha

Kimagure Prince: We didn't have to take auditions or anything, we just began because we were friends with each other.

Shirofuku: It feels like we're a group of amateurs who used the 'self-produced' label to our advantage and somehow managed to come this far.

It began with a dance event in Tokyo

· Did you know each other well before the group's formation?

Aoi: Kind of. We kept in touch with each other individually over the internet, and sometimes we performed at the same cover dance events so met each other there.

Kimagure Prince: Even if we didn't speak much, we would watch each other's videos so we generally knew what kind of style each person danced in.

Shirofuku: One thing I'd like to say is that I wasn't the only one that choose the group members. I know the first person I asked about it was Aoi…

Nichan & Nokkuso: We're pretty sure we were invited by Gerutan!

Forgeru: When I heard from Shirofuku that he was forming a group, he asked me if I knew anyone who'd like to join, so I said I'd find some people for him and asked a few people in my circle of friends. At the time, Shirofuku said something like, "I can't find people because I have no friends." *laughs*

Shirofuku: Ahahahaha

Kimagure Prince: We were all living in different areas, but we had a plan for how to gather as a group. Around the day we decided to shoot the Morning Musume. cover video, there was a big dance event in Tokyo at which most of the members were performing. The timing was really lucky because everyone was able to meet up.

Nokkuso: In a way it's like we chose the group members based on who was available on that day, right?

Shirofuku: I guess so. *Laughs*

Nokkuso: That's why Tomitan wasn't a 1st generation member, because he lived in Hokkaido and couldn't come to the event.

Tomitake: I'm the only 2nd generation member. I was already friends with everyone, so I just inserted myself into the group at a later date.

Everything we do comes from taking our jokes too far

· Looking back on MeseMoa.'s history, please tell us the most impressive events and turning points.

Shirofuku: When we first released an original song after doing dance covers, there were no other groups doing the same thing. But now there are a lot of people who began original music activities by posting on video sharing sites…

Aoi: At the time you could count them all on one hand.

Nichan: Our discussion about holding solo events after that left a big impression in my mind.

Tomitake: I remember everyone saying, "Will people actually come to see us!?"

Nichan: The members had appeared at various big events many times, but it's a different story when it comes to solo events.

Forgeru: We'd never heard of any group that had been created on a video sharing website go on to hold independent events.

Shirofuku: That's true. But perhaps we attempted that challenge specifically because nobody else around us was trying it. Now I'm really glad we made that decision. After that we stacked up live activities like our 47 prefecture tour in earnest, and events like taking an audition to appear at a big festival are pretty memorable. We participated in the 'Deren no!? Summer Sonic!? 2013' Audition to see if we could perform at Summer Sonic, which had its ups and downs…

· Summer Sonic is generally more of a band-oriented festival, isn't it?

Shirofuku: It is, but we did our best to dance and give out an idol aura, and we performed on the stage in the special 2013 section. There were various comments regarding the participation of what began as a cover group, but perhaps some people learnt about us through this experience.

Kimagure Prince: Participating in the 'Stairway to M-Sta Ultra Audition' in 2017 was also memorable. Our activities are usually focussed around the internet, but we also felt strongly that we wanted to appear on TV.

Nozakibento: It resulted in an overwhelming defeat, but somehow we were able to get to the final shortlist. The support from all the fans was very encouraging.

Tomitake: If we're thinking about turning points, it's got to be our Nakano Sunplaza performance. The first time we held a concert there in 2015 and performed on the stage where no-one thought we'd be able to stand became a source of confidence for all of us. We were also so proud to perform to a sold-out crowd.

Aoi: At first we only mentioned Nakano Sunplaza as a joke, because it's the holy land of Hello! Project.

Tomitake: We messed around saying how much we'd love to go there.

Nichan: You say that, but doesn't everything we do come from taking our jokes too far? "Let's release our own single" or "Let's hold a concert and a cheki-kai", they were all jokes. *Laughs*

Nozakibento: At least they were at first.

Nichan: Once we'd decided to do something then we talked about it seriously, but our first steps all began in jest.

· But you've managed to make all those things happen properly, right?

Nichan: *with wide eyes* Yes…you're right!!

All: Wahahahaha

Aoi: That's how the results turn out, I guess. *laughs*

Nichan: A fortunate conclusion indeed.

An irregular collection of people - in a good way

· At the 2015 Nakano Sunplaza performance, you announced that you would quit the jobs you'd individually been working alongside your idol activities - whether an office worker, a nursery school teacher or anything else - and devote yourselves to being idols. You had to make preparations for this decision, but how did that come to be?

Shirofuku: We often couldn't get our schedules to match up and were usually affected by time restrictions. We also felt like we should treat the group in a more professional way for the sake of those who supported us, so we talked it out over and over and decided to focus on this one activity.

Tomitake: We also asked the fans how they felt about it at our Nakano Sunplaza concert, like "What if we decided to make this our jobs?" There were certainly some people who liked the fact were just doing it for fun and not taking it too seriously.

Shirofuku: We too were hesitating until the very last minute.

Aoi: But thanks to that decision, the number of times we could gather as a group increased noticeably. Our practice sessions became much more efficient.

Shirofuku: There have been a lot of advantages to that decision. On the other hand, while we were doing our activities just as a hobby many things were forgiven, but now that level of indulgence no longer applies. Since we said we would make being an idol into our jobs, we felt an increasing sense of responsibility to show something suitable.

· By being determined and placing your bets on these activities, did the group's teamwork grow stronger?

Kimagure Prince: We're originally very close friends, but I think our teamwork grows stronger every day. Each member of MeseMoa. has things that he's very good at and things that he's not so good at, but I think that humanity aspect is part of our charm. In a good way MeseMoa. is an irregular collection of people, created by each of us showing off our specialist areas.

Language learning

I feel like if school focused more on exposure and actually explaining stuff... Than having me memorize a bunch of vocabulary and grammar... I would have by now been much better with various languages.

Someone will explain something to me.. And it’ll all just start making sense! I often feel over-whelmed, because school often focuses on how to conjugate each word... instead of trying to make you understand how to actually use em or what the pattern is.

For example, with French.. I learnt so much more asking my gf about stuff, than I did memorizing verbs in school. Such as the fact that French verbs are really consistent, besides like half a dozen verbs.

And with like irregular words, there’s mostly just one or two letters off, and they remain pretty consistent. It’s just you got exceptions like être, aller and avoir.

I felt always so turned off from nynorsk, because they always had us write individual words, and memorize their endings! But then I did some research myself, and found out really nynorsk is incredibly consistent. In my experience? More so than bokmål.

When a verb has -a in the past tense, it gets -ar in present tense, if a verb has -de/-te in past tense, it gets -er in present tense. In school they never pointed out this pattern to me, and just had us memorize verbs.

These are examples of how explaining did much more for me than ““studying”“ did in school... Or rather... memorizing a few hours a week did.

But you know what actually really helped me? Exposure. Having to just go by context to figure out what to do in a video game, or to figure out stories in comics is the actuall reason I managed to learn English. Not reading a bunch of boring stories in school.

From school, I couldn’t even count to 20 after having it for multiple years... But once I started reading comics in English, messaging people online (msn, forums etc) and playing pokemon, I got to a conversational level where I could read actual long texts.

I learnt English because I had to.. Not in the sense of being forced, but in the sense that I had to for me to be able to consume media I like. I will say though, it is bitter-sweet... Because not many things like that gets translated to my native language.. So it also meant I wasn’t much exposed to my native language for a few years.

When I dropped out of school the first time, I essentially did not really use Norwegian and didn’t get exposed to it a lot... I had to essentially re-learn to write in it because I neglected it so much. I spoke to all my friends in English and all the media I consumed at the time was English, or other foreign languages.

I am hoping now to get to expose myself to languages to actually learn them... It is sort of urgent for me to do so with French to be honest.

Creating my Ethical Model for an Algorithm

Determine what kind of social media site or digital platform you are creating. Then answer the following questions, explaining your decisions. (Remember the key here is to create an ethical algorithm model).

The social media platform I am creating is a platform where female gamers are able to socialize, collaborate with and interact with others in a safe community. Any female who is starting out or wants to create fellow female gamers will now have a platform for easier communication. It is no doubt that women playing games face a more difficult experience starting a game or to actively play a game. By creating this platform, its goal is to create a safe haven from the sexism and hate comments that female gamers may face in game.

What will you measure?

This social media platform will measure how many female gamers or gamer enthusiasts are online. It will display- on the home page- the number of users that are actively using the platform. It will also create a chat tab so that female gamers have a place to reach out and request for other female gamers to play games with. Technical updates, information updates, and reviews on popular/relevant games will be available to users as a credible source. Ranks, achievements, and usernames/taglines will be available, if the users wish to make it available, for others to join in the same ranking system as them. Also, the optimal schedule and time of play for each user can be identified in order to easily find companions that have similar availability. Another factor would be a feature to post highlights, montages, or clips of their best gameplay or memorable moments in gaming.

How will you weigh these factors?

Important factors that should be considered are the communication feature (1), scheduling (2), and what rank each individual is (3). Communication features, such as chat boxes or voice chat, are necessary so that there is an easy way to contact people. Scheduling is important due to the different time zones that make it difficult to plan an appropriate time to play together. Displaying the time zone or scheduling times in one’s bio makes it easier to find individuals to play with. Displaying the elo rank, the skill level in video games, is important because even though two individuals want to play a game together, oftentimes, ranking systems in games, such as competitive mode in Valorant, hinder their ability to play with one another. Activity and information/updates are not as necessary to know as the aforementioned.

What factors will not be measured?

Factors that cannot be measured will be an accurate detection of any possible trolls or imposters that would lie and claim that they are female in order to mess with users and potentially sabotage their gaming experience. There is also the possibility of users being disrespectful and toxic, whether that be for entertainment purposes or because of poor gaming performance or experiences with other users. One factor that would not play a significant role in this platform would be age because generally, people are not willing to share their age online, and playing games with people that are significantly older or younger than you is not irregular or does not play a significant role in terms of playing video games.

How will the model learn or adapt to new information?

The model will ensure that there will be daily news on updates that games have and information about games. For example, when a new character comes out, if there are new terms and conditions, if there are possible rewards to collect, etc., this model will inform users of these updates. It will also post future updates and visions for games.

What biases will be built into the model? How will this change the algorithm's outcome?

Biases that will be built into the model include gender filters that would only urge females to use the platform due to its initial purpose. Another bias that would unintentionally be built into the model is against players that underperform compared to others. If an individual plays with someone who is not able to perform up to expectations, they may choose to abandon them, leaving those who are not as skilled as others to be left out as outcasts on the platform.

How will the model live out the (un)ethical practices we have discussed?

The model will live out the unethical practice of individual’s content or videos being spread outside the intended audience/platform. Even though this platform was designed for female gamers to post their content in confidence in a safer community, it still has the risk of being taken out of this platform and posted on other platforms to be judged or ridiculed.
