Introducing an updated illustrated poster featuring all the tigers of the world! While it was once believed that there were nine subspecies of tigers, recent scientific research has shown that there are actually only two: those that live on the continent and those that reside on islands. However, within these two subspecies, there are various populations of tigers that were previously classified as distinct subspecies. Creating this poster was a labor of love that required a significant amount of time and effort. Some of the animals featured on the poster were particularly challenging to illustrate due to their extinction, which meant there was limited photographic evidence available to use as a reference. I am thrilled with the final product and hope that others will appreciate the attention to detail and care that went into each illustration. Panthera Tigris Tigris Nikos
Jaune: Hey, Pyrrha? Can I have a hug?
Pyrrha: Of course, Jaune! (Hugs)
Jaune: (Sinks into her)
Pyrrha: Would anyone else like-
Nora: (Dragging Ren) MEMEMEME~!
Fun Fact! Bengal tigers are big. Females have been documented to reach 400 pounds, males 500 pounds, and occasionally larger specimens reaching 700 pounds. Royal Bengal Tigers are reportedly even bigger, with one specimen shot by David Hasinger in 1967 was reported to be 857 pounds, measured at 11 feet long, and left paw prints "the size of dinner plates," and it's last meal was a live water buffalo weighed down by an eighty-pound weight. It is displayed in the Smithsonian Institutions's National Museum of Natural History, in the Hall of Mammals.
---------------------------------------------------
Pyrrha: Ready for our run, Jaune?
Jaune: You bet! Maybe this time I could-
Pyrrha: (Ear flicks) Oh, uh, why don't you keep warming up, Jaune? I need to grab something from the dorm.
Jaune: Oh, uh, sure thing, Pyrrha. I'll be right here.
Cardin: (Sitting on the roof) What the hell? Where's Nikos go- (Door swings open, Mauled)
Fun Fact! Bengal Tigers are fast. They can make short sprints of forty miles per hour, which is about the speed of a thoroughbred horse. An incident with a startled tigress mother with her cubs in Nepal in 1974 resulted in the death of a researcher who was hiding 15 feet in a tree. In 2007, on Christmas Day at the San Francisco Zoo, an Amur Tiger cleared a thirty-foot moat to maul three visitors who were harassing the tiger, killing one of them before being killed after four shots to the skull by responding police officer's .40-caliber-pistol rounds. It should be noted that the Amur was a captive tiger, raised from birth in the zoo. Imagine a wild tiger raised in the jungle.
---------------------------------------------------
Pyrrha: Are you okay, Jaune?
Jaune: Y-Yeah, I... Wait, what about the goliath?!
Pyrrha: It's okay, Jaune. I took care of it.
Jaune: But how, Pyrrha? (Holding) Your weapons-!
Pyrrha: (Takes, Smiles) I took care of it.
Jaune: (Looks behind her, Sees dead goliath)
Fun Fact! Bengal Tigers are strong. Their bite force can reach up to a thousand pounds, which is much stronger than a pitbull's and about a quarter of a great white shark. Their prey includes deer, buffalo, bison, bears, rhinos, and elephants. A single blow can break a bear's spine, and easily decapitate a human.
---------------------------------------------------
Jaune: Thanks again for letting us come visit, Mrs. Nikos.
Mama Nikos: Oh, Jaune, don't be so formal. We're practically family, so just call me Mama.
Jaune: Uh... No, I'll just stick with Mrs. Nikos, if you don't mind.
Mama Nikos: Oh, you are just so polite! I'm glad Pyrrha could have such a handsome team leader like you.
Pyrrha: (Blushing) M-Mom...
Nora: Can I have more meat buns, Mama?
Ren: Nora...
Nora: Oh, right! Khm! May I have more meat buns, Mama?
Mama Nikos: They're in the oven.
Jaune: So what do you do for a living, Mrs. Nikos?
Mama Nikos: I'm a personal fitness trainer. It's actually how I met Pyrrha's father. He said he could perform a perfect double twister kick, and I told him it was impossible unless he could twist and launch himself at a 167 degree rotation with a north-northwest gale blowing at 3.5 miles per hour behind him-
Mama Nikos: (Ding!) Oh! Meat buns are done!
Jaune: Huh...
Pyrrha: Don't worry. I didn't get it the first time, either.
Fun Fact! Bengal tigers are smart. Cubs are raised by their mothers for two and a half to three years. There are also notes of tigers imitating deer and bear calls. They will chase larger prey into water, tear at buffalo legs to bring them to the ground, and will flip porcupines from to their backs to avoid spines. There are also records of tigers killing 15-foot crocodiles, 20-foot pythons, 300-pound seals, and a 20-year-old elephant.
---------------------------------------------------
Jaune: Hm? Hey, Pyrrha? Who's this standing with your mom?
Pyrrha: Hm? Oh... That's... That's my mother. She... She's not around anymore.
Jaune: Do... Do you want to talk about it?
Pyrrha: I... I don't know where to begin. She was my hero, but she did something really bad, and she died when I was really young. And I...
Jaune: Hey. You don't have to tell me if you don't want to.
Pyrrha: (Leans on Jaune) I was probably six years old when it happened. She and I were on our way to watch a tournament together, but then this guy came from out of nowhere. He shot at us and broke her jaw. She carried me back home, and then... She left that night. I didn't learn about what happened to her until just after getting accepted into Beacon. She... She went on a rampage and then... Then she...
Jaune: (Holds her) Hey, hey. It's okay, Pyrrha. I'm... I'm sorry to hear that. I'm... I'm sure she was a great mom.
Pyrrha: (Sniffles) She was the best. And, on the bright side, because of her, there's a new standard for huntsman and huntresses to follow. And she's part of the reason why I became a huntress. So I could make sure everyone follows the standard. Follows the example she set. (Smiles) I think she would have liked you.
Jaune: (Looks at family photo) I think I would have like her, too.
Fun Fact! In the first ten years of the 20th century, until her death in 1907, the Champawat Tiger, also known as "the man-eater" killed and ate 436 humans in western Nepal. She evaded capture and continued to kill until she was shot by British hunter Jim Corbett, who speculated the tigress lost her teeth years ago from a gunshot, forcing her to change her prey to much easier humans. He then went on to be an advocate for wild tigers and spent the latter years of his life devoted to their conservation, even having a conservation park in Nepal dedicated to him.

Tara 1885–1890. Publisher: Calcutta Art Studio. Lithograph Dimensions 11 15/16 x 16 1/16 in. / 30.3 x 40.8 cm. At bottom: Calcutta Art Studio 185 Bowbazar St
This print belongs to a set of five prints depicting the 10 Mahavidyas. The Mahavidyas, who first appear in late medieval Hinduism, are considered to be individual incarnations or manifestations of the Great Goddess, paralleling the ten incarnations of Vishnu.
An origin story relates them to ten forms assumed by Shiva's wife Sati, in her anger over the disrespect her father, Daksha, showed toward Shiva.
The Mahavidyas were particularly honored in the Bengal region. Tara appears similar to Kali, but she is pregnant and wears a tiger skin. She is depicted standing in a cremation ground surrounded by blazing fires. (via Museum of Fine Arts Boston)

2022 Reading Log, pt. 22
Two of the five books I read in this block are my nominees for best books I’ve read this year.
Tumblr media
106. Hummingbirds: A Life-size Guide to Every Species by Michael Fogden, Marianne Taylor and Sheri L Williamson. I love this gimmick. Printing a book of wildlife photography where the animals are life sized is not something that can be done for a lot of taxa, although there are some others out there (like The Book of Frogs). Hummingbirds are a small enough group that such a book can be comprehensive, but not so small that the book isn’t publishable as a book. The photography is, as you would imagine, excellent, and there’s info about their life histories and possible classification changes for the birds as appropriate. Not all species are depicted life size, but about 90% are—the back of the book has shorter entries on birds that they couldn’t get photographs of (in some cases, because they’re extinct or only known from museum specimens).
Tumblr media
107. 100 Animals that can F*cking End You by Mamadou Ndiaye. I’ve read books based on blogs, and books based on podcasts. But this is the first book based on TikTok that I’ve read. I’ve seen a few of Ndiaye’s wildlife videos, and they were fun enough that I wanted to check this out. This is also fun, but fairly slight, as is appropriate for a book based on a short video format. One of the things I found especially charming is that the TikTok algorithm’s ban on the words “die” or “kill” is maintained throughout, so there’s lots of baroque euphemisms and metaphors for how lethal these animals are. Animals are rated on a 1-10 Merk scale, with 10 being the most deadly (except not, because humans get a 99, appropriately). Wanna know what animals rate a solid 10? African elephant, Bengal tiger, chimpanzee, crocodile (covered in total, but most of the text is on Nile crocodiles), hippopotamus, mosquito, orca, polar bear. A pretty respectable list.
Tumblr media
108. Accidental Gods: On Men Unwittingly Turned Divine by Anna Della Subin. A nomination for Book of the Year; I loved this. It’s a challenging read, but a very good one, and it made me think. The book is about humans who were seen as divine by other humans in the last 500 years, and how our thoughts on that shaped the philosophy of religion. The theses are twofold: 1) that Western civilization, being built on Greco-Roman philosophy and Christianity, shouldn’t be surprised that humans are seen to have assumed divinity, and 2) these instances were predominately those of the victims of capitalism, white supremacy and colonialism trying to cope with these injustices. We start with Haile Selassie and the Rastafarian movement and several other 20th century instances, move on to how India and its enormity of gods, and how porous the lines seemed to be between gods and men, baffled and angered the British Raj, and then how European colonizers claimed that they were seen as gods by native Americans, and invented the concept of whiteness in the process of enforcing these hierarchies. I learned a lot and highly recommend it.
Tumblr media
109. Dinosaurs: New Visions of a Lost Word by Michael J. Benton, illustrated by Bob Nicholls. The book is written for a YA level audience—late middle school or early high school, and covers fifteen Mesozoic animals (not all of them are dinosaurs; that shouldn’t surprise anyone since it’s a pterosaur on the cover) and what their life appearances were, and how we know. Benton was on one of the teams that first discovered the preservation of melanosomes in dinosaur fossils, so there’s a lot of discussion of feather color and the technique. The highlight of the book is in its pictures—both detailed photographic reproductions of the fossils in question, and Nicholls’ life reconstructions of the animals. There is some weirdness in the text, but I think I’m just the most likely to pick up on it; at one point, Benton implies that descriptions of new species and other taxonomic work is less important than life reconstructions, which: rude.
Tumblr media
110. Dead Blondes and Bad Mothers: Monstrosity, Patriarchy and the Fear of Female Power by Sady Doyle. Another nominee for book of the year, this is a breezier read than Accidental Gods but still contains sensitive issues. Namely, patriarchy, misogyny and rape culture. The book is split into three overarching themes, each of which is related to how it scares men and has been reflected and distorted in horror: daughters, wives and mothers. Some of the stuff in here brought things I have often thought about, or at least occasionally wondered about, into sharp relief; one of the author’s theses is that slasher movies and true crime are popular with young women as ritual catharsis. In a world where women’s bodies and lives are vulnerable to male predation, media that recognizes that danger is important and valued. I also have an uncommon recommendation to go along with this book: read the Resources. There’s commentary on the movies, TV shows and books discussed, which adds some good context and is occasionally very funny.

#PleinAirpril 30/30 (Theme: Earth) “Bengal Tiger” gouache on paper, 4”x6” This is the 30th, and last painting of the @warriorpainters’ month-long PleinAirpril Challenge (30 paintings in 30 days). I’m working off of the theme “earth,” and I painted a bengal tiger in the brush. Bengal tigers are carnivores with orange-yellow and white fur with black stripes. They are one of the largest wild cats, and are native to India. Bengal tigers are regularly threatened by habitat loss and poaching, and as of 2018, there are between 2.6 and 3.3 thousand bengals tigers left in the wild. If you want to see the rest of this series, all of these paintings are posted on my website, and are available as prints and originals. Thank you for joining me this month, and follow along for more work. _ This post is for #PleinAirpril, organized by @warriorpainters and supported by @procreate @blickartmaterials @warriorartcamp @huiontablet @graphixly @tourboxofficial @cupeasels @winsorandnewton @etchr_studio @heavypaintapp @cottonwoodartsbook #CreatewithBlick #cupeasel #cupeasels #etchrstudio #WinsorandNewton #WNWP22 #cottonwoodarts #NoPleinNoGain t#Artworks #ArtistsOnInstagram #ArtDaily #DailyArt #InstaArt #ArtistsofInstagram #NatureArtist #LandscapePainting #OutdoorPainting #PaintingOfTheDay #ArtOfTheDay #Gouache #Etchr #ArtForSale #Tiger #BengalTiger #BigCats #AMArtWalk1 #accessibility: A gouache painting of orange and white bengal tiger with black stripes crouched in green foliage. https://www.instagram.com/p/Cc-vDilME6h/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

 READING
FOR QUESTIONS 15 TO 21, READ THE PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW.
 THE WHITE BENGAL TIGER
I’m sure you have seen hundreds of Orange Bengal Tigers but did you know that there are White Bengal Tigers too? They are unique for their white color fur which is not a result of any disease. It is actually because of the absence of a pigment or color giving agent, which is found in orange coloured Bengal Tigers.
If you compare the White Bengal Tiger to an Orange Bengal Tiger, you will notice the former are somewhat bigger. Even as cubs, they are bigger than the Orange Bengal Tiger Cubs and tend to grow faster and heavier.
The White Bengal Tiger’s stripes are like our finger prints - no two tigers are the same! Also, the stripes of the tiger are a coloration of the skin.
Did you know that several hundred White Bengal Tigers are currently in captivity worldwide, with about 100 being found in India alone! That’s sad, isn’t it?  I hate the very idea of keeping any animal in captivity, let alone tigers. Another thing I don’t like is showcasing these majestic creatures in entertainment business. It is not fair to force animals to work in circuses, is it?
Nandankanan Zoological Park in Odisha is the host zoo for white tigers. In 1980, the first litter of white tigers were born to Deepak and Ganga, both normal tawny tigers. Subsequent litters of white tigers have been distributed to zoos both at home and abroad.
At present, the park is home to over 34 white tigers. The good thing is that the population of White Bengal Tigers is on the increase! Yippee! Their unique fur has made white tigers popular in entertainment, showcasing exotic animals, and at Zoos. I am not very sure if that is something good to the tigers. What do you think?
  16. An individual white tiger can be identified from its ________
A. fingerprints
B. fur
C. stripes
17. Which of the following statements is TRUE in the context of paragraph 2?
A. An orange tiger is usually bigger and heavier than a white one.
B. A white tiger is usually bigger and heavier than an orange one.
C. An orange tiger cub is usually bigger and heavier than the white one.
18. According to paragraph 5, Deepak and Ganga were ______
A. First known white tiger cubs born in captivity.
B. Parents of the first litter of white tiger cubs.
C. A tiger couple that worked in a circus.
 19. White tigers are popular in the entertainment business showcasing animals because of ______
A. Their size and weight
B. Their unique stripes
C. The colour of their fur
20. Which of the following views does the author hold?
A. Animals should be allowed to lively freely in their natural habitats.
B. The white tiger population is slowly decreasing.
C. Some animals have to be kept in cages for entertainment purposes.
21. According to the passage, the current population of tigers in the Nandankanan is ______
A. Several hundred
B. One hundred
C. Over thirty four.
CHOOSE THE BEST RESPONSE
22. If someone thanks you for something you did for them, what would you say in response?
A. OK, OK
B. No mention, please.
C. You’re welcome.
23. ‘______is this pen for, please?’
A. How much
B. What price
C. What’s the cost
24. ‘Mom, can I ______ another chocolate, please?’
‘Sorry, there isn’t any left in the refrigerator.’
A. buy
B. have
C. give
25. If someone makes a mistake, which of the following words is he/she most likely to use?
A. Wow!
B. Yuck!
C. Oops!

This is a fun question. For about 35 years now I’ve hosted a Christmas party for about 30 friends. The ‘price’ to get in is a homemade ornament. You would not believe what my friends have come up with. I have numerous boxes of Dear The Person Behind Me Classic T Shirt . About 8 years ago, I told them to not bring anything. But last week, party weekend, about 15 still brought one. They all said that they just loved doing it and it put them in a party, Christmas mood. So the last 8 years I had to come up an idea for the tree. Some of my best were: going through printed pictures of my friends, had some of their pets- most now gone. Vacation pics with one or more in it, and just neat / interesting landmarks etc. took over 100 to Walgreens . For a dime/picture, the copied them onto print stock. I refilled the originals and then cut out the the thing in pic I liked. Bought a stack of manila folders and a bottle of Elmer’s glue, both cheap. Opened the folders and laid them flat on my dining table that had a sheet on it, arranged all the cut-outs on the open folders to get as many as possible on each one put glue on the back of the image, pressed it onto the folder. A couple hours later, cut the pics out of the folder Now the pics were very sturdy. On the back, more glue and a metal ornament hanger. (Like 200 for $ 1) guests had a great time retelling old stories associated with the memories the photos inspired. Hope you like my ideas.

I have spent the last few days in the Sundarbans Mangrove Forest, or more accurately on the waterways in and around the forest.
The Sundarbans is the world’s largest Mangrove Forest and crosses the Bengal region in both Bangladesh and India. The area in the delta is formed by the confluence of the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna Rivers in the Bay of Bengal.
I joined a boat on Friday morning and left this afternoon. As well as sailing down the rivers and canals there were a few walks in the near forest and beaches - we were not allowed to venture into the deep forest. There were birds, monkeys and deer aplenty and there are tigers but I didn’t see any - although I did see a paw print, if that counts.
In 2007, the landfall of Cyclone Sidr damaged around 40% of the Sundarbans. You can see some of the damage in the more ‘beach’ photographs.
