ABBA - Waterloo 1974

"Waterloo" is a song by Swedish pop group ABBA, with music composed by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus and lyrics written by Stikkan Anderson. It is first single of the group's second studio album of the same name, and their first under the Atlantic label in the US. This was also the first single to be credited to the group performing under the name ABBA. The title and lyrics reference the 1815 Battle of Waterloo, and use it as a metaphor for a romantic relationship.

In 1974, "Waterloo" represented Sweden in the 19th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest held in Brighton, winning the contest and beginning ABBA's path to worldwide fame. The song differed from the standard "dramatic ballad" tradition at the contest by its flavour and rhythm, as well as by its performance. ABBA gave the audience something that had rarely been seen before in Eurovision: flashy costumes (including silver platform boots), a catchy uptempo song and simple choreography. It was the first winning entry in a language other than that of their home country; prior to 1973, all Eurovision singers had been required to sing in their country's native tongue, a restriction that was lifted briefly for the contests between 1973 and 1976 (thus allowing "Waterloo" to be sung in English), then reinstated before ultimately being removed again in 1999. Sveriges Radio released a promo video for "Waterloo" that was directed by film director Lasse Hallström, whose first notable English-language film success was What's Eating Gilbert Grape in 1993. ABBA recorded the German and French versions of "Waterloo" in March and April 1974; the French version was adapted by Alain Boublil, who would later go on to co-write the 1980 musical Les Misérables.

The song shot to number 1 in the UK and stayed there for two weeks, becoming the first of the band's nine UK number 1's, and the 16th biggest selling single of the year in the UK. It also topped the charts in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, West Germany, Ireland, Norway, and Switzerland, while reaching the Top 3 in Austria, France, the Netherlands, Spain, and Sweden. Unlike other Eurovision-winning tunes, the song's appeal transcended Europe: "Waterloo" also topped the charts in South Africa, and reached the Top 10 in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Rhodesia, and the US (peaking at number 6, their third-highest-charting US hit after number 1 "Dancing Queen" and number 3 "Take a Chance on Me"). In 2005, at Eurovision fiftieth anniversary competition Congratulations: 50 Years of the Eurovision Song Contest, "Waterloo" was chosen as the best song in the contest's history.

"Waterloo" is featured in the encore of the musical Mamma Mia!. The song does not have a context or a meaning. It is just performed as a musical number in which members of the audience are encouraged to get up off their seats and sing, dance and clap along. The song is performed by the cast over the closing credits of the film Mamma Mia!, but is not featured on the official soundtrack. It is also performed as part of the story in the sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, by Hugh Skinner and Lily James.

The Australian film Muriel's Wedding (1994), features "Waterloo" in a pivotal scene in which lead Toni Collette bonds with the character played by Rachel Griffiths. The film's soundtrack, featuring five ABBA tracks, is widely regarded as having helped to fuel the revival of popular interest in ABBA's music in the mid-1990s. "Waterloo" features prominently in the 2015 science-fiction film The Martian. The song plays as the film's lead, played by Matt Damon, works to ready his launch vehicle for a last-chance escape from Mars. In "Mother Simpson", the eighth episode of the seventh season of The Simpsons, Mr. Burns plays "Ride of the Valkyries" from a tank about to storm the Simpson home, but the song is cut-off and "Waterloo" is played, to which Smithers apologizes, advising he "must have accidentally taped over that".

fantom's album review #1

I decided I'd go through NPR's The 150 Greatest Albums Made By Women.

Doing all 150 seemed a little too daunting, so I'm just doing the top 50. I'm going in order from 50 to 1, listening to all the albums from start to finish, rating them and writing my opinion.

I'm just doing this for fun, to learn more about the history of popular music and also listen to genres that I'm less familiar with.

All my ratings are based on my own personal tastes, so the following list is HIGHLY subjective.

50. Hole - Live Through This (1994)

7/10 I’ve never been much for 90s grunge. I was a little too young for its heyday (I was <10 when this album came out, hardly the intended audience) and later when I got into 90s music, grunge never really appealed to me. Still, I enjoyed this album, and I think a few of the songs on it will make it into my regular rotation.

49. Ricki Lee Jones - Pirates (1981)

2/10 Wow. I fucking hated this album. Her voice is okay, sometimes annoyingly breathy, and not nearly interesting enough to carry the meandering talk-singing she engages in nearly every song. Best thing I can say about this album is that it ends.

48. Etta James - Rocks the House (1964)

7/10 I don’t like live albums. That being said, this one is actually pretty good. It has a fun energy, with some great call and response with the audience. NPR's review said she “howled her way through” her songs, and that is accurate. Not something I usually enjoy, but aside from the howling, she has a very powerful and lovely voice, and even the howling started to grow on me by the end of the album.

47. Celia Cruz - Son con Guaguanco (1966)

10/10 No notes. I fucking loved this album. Es La Humanidad is my favorite song off of it. Stunning voice, great instrumentals, so fun to listen to.

46. Emmylou Harris - Wrecking Ball (1995)

6/10 A lot of the songs were really hit or miss for me. Largely, I really preferred the accompaniment. Wrecking Ball in particular stood out with this great lonely, yearning sound. Deeper Well is the best song on the album, if the rest had been like that, could have been a 9/10 easily. Orphan Girl was awful.

45. Dusty Springfield - Dusty in Memphis (1969)

5/10 Boring. The Windmills of Your Mind was alright.

44. Heart - Dreamboat Annie (1976)

9/10 Glad to find that Magic Man and Crazy on You are representative of the album rather than exceptions from it. Soul of the Sea is probably my favorite track. Lots of fun to listen to.

43. M.I.A. - Kala (2007)

2/10 I think I like Paper Planes as much as the next guy, but not enough to listen to a whole album of it. Absolutely chock full of the most annoying sound effects known to man. This one took me a long time to get through. When it was time for me to listen to music I kept thinking, “I don't want to ruin the pleasant vibe I have going by making myself listen to this.”

42. Ella Fitzgerald - Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Johnny Mercer Song Book (1964)

9/10 Hard to go wrong with Ella Fitzgerald. Name a song of hers that’s not an instant classic. I was surprised to see that this album was from the 60s when I started listening to it. Not the decade I associate with big band. I deduct one point because for me, all slow, soulful, romantic big band songs all kind of sound the same. I like the sound, but I like having some variety.

41. Tracy Chapman - Tracy Chapman (1988)

10/10 Came into the album only having heard of Fast Car. It lives up to the hype, and the rest of the album does not disappoint! Great sound, great lyrics, great social justice message. Talkin’ bout a Revolution is going to be the next song I listen to over and over again to wring every drop of serotonin I can get from it.

Final thoughts of albums 50-41

Favorite album from this group is Tracy Chapman's self titled album.

As for my least favorite, it's really hard to choose between MIA and Ricki Lee Jones. They were both so deeply awful to listen to.

What I'm looking forward to in albums 40-31:

Kate Bush and my childhood favorite, Tina Turner

What I'm dreading in the next ten:

Björk. I've been doing my best to listen to all the albums from start to finish even if I don't like it. Björk might break the streak.

LAST MOVIE : Alive (1994, Adventure/Thriller Film).

► I watched it by myself cuz my mom REFUSES to watch it bc it's based off an actual incident that happened and it contains acts of cannibalism- I don't remember much of it?- but I assume I enjoyed it, oh and I also watched the documentary(?) of the Andes Plane Crash Incident and it was great (pls don't think of me as a weirdo- I just like watching real crime/murder/etc. documentaries sometimes 😭)

SWEET/SPICY/SAVOURY : any flavor for me really! depending what I feel like tasting rn.

lyanna was the knight of the laughing tree. rhaegar finds this out.

she does try to avoid rhaegar after she is given the crown of love and beauty but there are magical and otherworldly stakes.

lyanna becomes aware of the prophecy of ice and fire and that there has to be three dragons, and despite her respect for elia, she does fall for rhaegar. despite this the pregnancy surprise her.

he takes her out of winterfell before going to dorne where she spends a whole year and something.

she falls quickly pregnant after that considering a pregnancy period is of nine months.

while she tells need that the child's name is aegon, in honor of the prophecy, she wants him to have a northern name. she never learns what ned names him.

this is more a headcanon of mine, but her tomb is constructed over where vermax, jacaerys velaryon's dragon lay a hatch of eggs. only one of them remains. ned founds it when building her crypt and puts the crown of winter roses, one of rhaegar's rubies and the egg for jon, eventually to find.

daenerys is not fireproof. those conditions were made due to the blood magic, in both times she is seen surviving fire in the show. but targaryens are not fireproof, but she does stand heat more than others and runs warmer too.

she resides in dragonstone while travelling in the north to help with the white walkers. her eyes are set in dorne first as well the news of aegon, her supposed nephew's arrival at the stormlands.

she wants a peaceful surrounding of king's landing. while she might use her dragons to attack the keep, there would be no attack to the citizens of king's landing themselves. she is not aware of the wildfire unless she is informed by jaime or others who know.

daenerys can have children, however, pregnancies are difficult to reach to term and she has to be careful, the years of inbred and her own worries about the maegi's curse.

daenerys will give the north it's independence if they support her claim and another pact of ice and fire would be made at this time.

her biggest conflict is at the moment at dorne and their support toward myrcella as well quentyn's death tarnishing a potential alliance.

one of the thing that worries daenerys the most is putting all the effort to regain the throne but unable to produce her own heirs. so she has to stablish a good line of succession if she is unable to have an heir.

mayor divergency, please read:

according to the drafts of the book in 1993 and 1994, the confrontation of drogo and viserys happens, and drogo kills viserys, dany is said to buy her time and eventually, kills drogo herself in revenge, after learning that drogo never intended to give them an army and basically "stole" and abused dany. she is joined in her escape with a few dothraki and her handmaidens and in a cave, she finds the dragon eggs.

I prefer the idea of dany finding the eggs or the eggs, finding her as well than just being gifted. a small change I do is that viserys is not dead, rather, he is alive, exiled, but he was left badly wounded by drogo. she still holds viserys accountable for selling her to drogo but upon seeing drogo's true colors and how he had no desire to help her and viserys go home, she snaps back to reality.

so this is not mad dany this is just dany reclaiming some of her power back and as in a hero's journey, her reward are the dragon eggs. she is found by the dothraki and tried to be burn alive with drogo's body and the eggs hatch at the same time as the book ends. the only difference is that dany doesn't have that many dothraki at her service. which i'm totally fine with.

As it’s Polish Independence Day (11.11) and @redhatmeg came up with the idea of celebrating it by posting about Poland/Polish people, I decided to make a post about notable Polish composers, adding links to their most famous pieces.

- Stanisław Moniuszko (1819 - 1872)

Known as ‘the father of Polish national opera’, one of the best composers of Polish romanticism. His work is characterized by usage of Polish texts and inspiration from Polish folk. His most notable work include operas such as Halka, Straszny dwór and over 300 songs compiled in Śpiewnik Domowy.

- Maria Szymanowska (1789 - 1831)

One of the first female composers in European history. Wrote over 100 piano pieces, including polonaise and nocturnes, preceeding Chopin. Her salon in St. Petersburg was visited by prominent musicians, writers and painters of her time.

Famous composer of the Young Poland period, exponent of Polish colourism. He was openly gay - one of his partner was a writer Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz, who wrote libretto to one of Szymanowski’s operas King Roger.

The Legend That Was Lost Too Soon

I honestly am not a huge fan of Tupac. I do acknowledge that he is a legend in rap and hip/hop history but his music has never been anything I’d personally listen to. He still should be given his credit as one of the most influential artists of all time. However, he starred in one of my favorite movies from the 90s, which is why I dedicated this blog post to him.

Overview

Tupac Amaru Shakur, often referred to by his stage names Makaveli and 2Pac is regarded by many as one of the greatest rappers of all time in terms of success and influence. Shakur has sold over 75 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling musicians. Shakur's music has been recognized for tackling many of the modern socioeconomic challenges that inner cities face. Shakur was born in New York City to parents who were both political activists and Black Panther Party members.

Controversies

Tupac’s legacy was not all sunshine and rainbows. He was arrested and sent to jail multiple times, and actually faced prison time at one point.

He faced a trial in 1994 for alleged sexual assault of a fan. He and members of his entourage were charged with sexual abuse of a woman named Ayanna Jackson. Throughout the court procedures, the late rapper maintained that the encounter was consensual, and he even pled his case to the public by discussing it on The Arsenio Hall Show. He ended up being sentenced to 1.5 to 4.5 years. After serving eleven months of his sentence, he was released from prison on an appeal financed by Marion "Suge" Knight.

An article by CBC, written by the CBC Radio, talks about how Tupac did not only release music with a societal conscious message. Shakur shifted away from positive and affirming political music and toward more profitable, but controversial, music when trends began to change.

Acting Career

Tupac was a master of many cards, as he didn’t stick to just making music. He also pursued an acting career. One of his most famous appearances was in the movie Juice in 1992. This is one of my favorite 90s movies of all time! Tupac played the role of Bishop in the film. The plot foes like Bishop gets a taste of power with the possession of a firearm, he turns into a merciless killing machine who his closest friends no longer recognize. It really is a hood classic and introduced me to how talented Tupac was.

Tupac also starred in the film Poetic Justice in 1993. He played the character Lucky and had an on-screen romantic partner. This role showed how versatile Tupac’s acting style was and how he could truly fit into any role presented to him.

Accomplishments

Before he unfortunately passed away, Tupac made a huge mark on society and had an ongoing list of successes and accomplishments.

Tupac sold over 75 million records worldwide. Rolling Stone magazine named him one of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time."

One of his most well-known songs, "Changes," addresses issues affecting society. The song reuses phrases from "I Wonder If Heaven Got a Ghetto," which was recorded in 1992, and samples Bruce Hornsby and the Range's 1986 smash song "The Way It Is." Tupac had experienced growing up with concerns of poverty, classism, and racial segregation, all of which were addressed in the 1986 song. Tupac addressed racism, drugs, war, violence, and police brutality in his verses.

Rappers' attitudes about movies have altered since Tupac's breakthrough film, Juice. Bishop, a confused young guy who betrays his friends and grows into a ruthless murderer, was played by him. The film not only illustrates what it was like to live in Harlem in the 1990s, but it was also the first time a rapper gave a truly excellent dramatic performance.

Tragedy

He was killed in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas, Nevada, on September 7, 1996, at 11:15 p.m. The incident occurred while the vehicle in which he was driving was stopped at a red light. Four shots from a.40-caliber Glock were fired at Shakur. Six days later, he died as a result of his injuries.

Just recently, Duane "Keefe D" Davis was apprehended on September 29, 2023, a whole 27 years later, after having been charged by a grand jury for the first-degree murder of Tupac Shakur.

This made me happy because society went all these years without knowing who killed such a legend in the making, and now it seems justice has finally been served.

🎻 4'33'': this is another musical one, albeit weirder. it's a reference to an experimental composition of the same name, conceived in 1947 by john cage. i think it's best if you look for it if you want to understand what type of song it is; the meaning and correlation to the story should be relatively clear once you listen to it~!

🕊️ sin deep, my darling angel: another reference to cradle of filth! this is a slight variation from 'sin deep my wicked angel', a rather beautiful and haunting instrumental piece from 2001~ i changed it so it fit the theme better :]

🦇 when our hearts lie six feet under: uh,,, another cradle of filth one x.x listen, their lyrics are beautiful, okei? this is from 2021, from their song 'necromantic fantasies'

fun fact, the title of the song has a double meaning: the obvious interpretation about dark arts, and a play on words! necro (death) + romantic = a romance that can only happen in death~ i thought it fit the vampire theme rather well

i did try to use some lyric from another song, 'discourse between a man and his soul', but it's far too dramatic of a title for this story x.x these lyrics are very pretty and fitting, thought~

🔪 ...but here is one: okay, we have escaped the hyperfixation~ we're still on the songs, though. this is from the 1995, stunning song 'all flowers in time bend towards the sun', by jeff buckley and elizabeth fraser. it's an unreleased little song, very intimate and tender, and it's referenced in one of my main inspirations for this story, 'the cat lady'.

in the game itself, it's mentioned by one of the main characters, who is trying to get through to our very depressed protagonist. she's essentially letting our protagonist know that some day she will find happiness, and that she's there for her~

camilo, being an only child, grew up with anything materialistic anyone could ever think of. all he had to do was point, and it was being handed to him without any type of questions. he was spoiled, practically born with a golden spoon in his mouth, in the public eye. his family was widely known in europe and also had business’ world wide, which meant he had a rather public life since he could remember

to anyone, his upbringing sounds like a wet dream, and in a way, it kind of was. i say ‘in a way’ because his life isn’t as picture perfect as everyone thinks it is. simply put, his parents were never really present. he grew up with the best help money could buy – nannies, butlers, personal chefs, maids, people who worked for his family and treated him like he was the last cup of water in the middle of the desert. he had it all, minus the people who were supposed to love him the most

they missed his birthdays, christmas, important holidays, things that any parent should be present for, they were never around. instead, he was always surrounded by people who were literally paid to care for him. he was never really held as a child, never hugged when he was sad or sick, and because of his rather cold upbringing, this made camilo an equally cold person

due to constantly being in the public eye, he became cynical and calculated. in his eyes, everything was a game. nothing was unattainable to him because of his hefty wallet and no one was genuinely worthy of his time. at least, this is what he grew up thinking

he grew up feeling an insane amount of pressure. despite his parents not being around, they always let him know that what the world thought of them, the idea people had of him, was everything. the way he looked and acted was all that mattered, and carrying this with him since he could remember was a lot to deal with

he quickly became obsessed with his physical appearance. what he wore, down from his shirt to his shoes, how his hair looked, how his skin appeared and his weight especially, became everything for him. camilo would rather die than go out wearing sweats or looking anything less than impeccable – he simply had to look his best or he wouldn’t go out at all

his earlier years consisted of traveling a lot. he lived in his mother’s hometown in the amalfi coast in italy for a few years, traveled back and forth to any country his heart desired, and would leave as soon as he grew bored with where he was staying at

by the time he’s fourteen, he decides to move to los angeles to start high school there, mostly so he could better his english, but also because his family had contacts there and he knew a few celebrities

this is how he meets his first ever boyfriend, dani, when he’s sixteen. truth be told, camilo wasn’t a fan of him at first. they were polar opposites and he considered dani to ‘not be at his level’. he doesn’t know how it happens, but he somehow makes his way into camilo’s cold ass heart, and soon enough, they begin to date. dani was someone camilo would have never considered, but he basically falls head over heels for him. he’s the first person who makes camilo feel less cynical, like he doesn’t have to be perfect or do everything so impeccably so. he makes him feel real, like he actually matters to someone and isn’t just a display case for the world to judge. simply put, he makes him feel things he never thought he would feel before, makes him see things from a completely different perspective

unfortunately, this romance is short lived when dani disappears one day, with no warning. camilo tries not to let it get to him, but he’s so hurt by this move, he ends up going to a boarding school in san francisco and finishes high school there, heading back to his hometown, barcelona, two days after his graduation

at this point, his trust issues are at an all time high. he has a very difficult time letting people in and mostly maintains superficial relationships with everyone, without much depth, or any depth at all, really

he basically becomes even more obsessed with his physical appearance, especially when he gets signed to a modeling agency by the time he’s nineteen. to camilo, the way he looks becomes everything to him, up to the point where it becomes unhealthy

he’s modeled for a few brands in the past before, but when he actually gets signed to an agency is when he starts to feel the pressure. being around his peers, for the first time in his life, he doesn’t feel like he’s above them. in fact, he feels inferior to them. some of the names are so big, that the importance of his last name doesn’t mean anything to them. never wanting to be below anyone, he starts working extra hard to make sure he’s on their level, or better than they are

to be honest, he was never overweight. in fact, doctors would tell him he had to gain some weight in the past, but despite this, he didn’t feel good enough. more so, he felt like he could be better. he became obsessed with any little flaw he would pick out of himself and would work endlessly to fix it, or make it less noticeable. one of his more genuine friends in the modeling industry flat out told him he had a problem, but camilo brushed it aside and kept ‘working’ on himself. by working on himself, i mean practically torturing himself with unhealthy diets and extreme exercise routines

the worst part is that he really didn’t think he had a problem. he struggled with an eating disorder and body dysphoria for over six years, until one day, six months after his twenty sixth birthday, he ends up passing out during a photo shoot. waking up in the hospital, he’s told he has pretty bad malnutrition linked to an eating disorder and is recommended to seek help. at this point, he weighed ninety seven pounds ( almost forty four kilograms )

it’s at this moment that he realizes that he’s not okay. despite not being quite ready to get the help he needs, he ends up checking himself into an inpatient clinic in madrid that specializes in eating disorders and mental health. he’s there for three months and it’s basically hell for him, the hardest thing he’s ever had to do, but... he does get better. by a lot. ends up gaining the weight he needs and see’s a nutritionist to work out a ( healthy ) vegan diet for him. after leaving said clinic, he goes back to los angeles to continue working on his modeling career and meet his sponsors. he’s there until december, and afterwards, makes the decision to move to long island in a pent house his parents own, wanting to be far away from anyone he’s ever known and start fresh

truth be told, camilo still does struggle a lot with his weight and appearance. he knows better at this point, but it’s still something he deals with on a daily basis. his habits aren’t unhealthy anymore, but he’s a very picky eater. he’s literally the type of person to separate food on his plate and eat it in different sections, one at a time. he will probably never go back to harming himself the way he did for so long, but he still carries that part of his life with him. he has a healthy diet and exercise routine now, but god knows it took him a while to get there

he can be a real pain in the ass when it comes to keeping things clean. i wouldn’t say he’s ocd, but he can be a borderline neat freak. things have to be tidy otherwise he literally can’t sleep

he enjoys drinking alcohol from time to time, but that’s about it. he hates weed because of the munchies and used to chain smoke cigarettes, but thankfully, that’s a habit he’s broken out of. he’s tried coke and dabbled with it back in spain when he was going through everything he was going through because he liked how it takes away your hunger, but he doesn’t really do anything now, claims he’s ‘high off life’

even though he makes it seem like he doesn’t want anyone or is too good for anyone, deep down inside, camilo really wants to be loved. he wants a boyfriend who will turn into his husband, he wants a kid and a house, and he wants an actual future with someone, despite showing anyone who has ever been interested in him romantically the complete opposite ( minus dani rip )

he has a cat he named draco meowfoy, clever twist on his favorite movie and book character, draco malfoy. his cat is one year old and a ragdoll cat, basically the sweetest cat ever, acts more like a dog than anything

he’s a model and an influencer, future heir to the business’ his family owns. he has thirty five million followers on instagram, and an equivalent amount on tiktok and other social media platforms. he has a ton of money besides that, but he makes a very good amount of money on sponsorships ( his favorite ones so far have been brands like adidas and colgate )

daisy ines is born on a cloudless day in miami, florida. she doesn’t know that she is the hail mary of an on-again, off-again marriage that is a patchwork of flaws and the measures that have been taken to soothe the ache, taped over twelve times at the seams. she grows up in a bustling neighborhood only a half hour from the coast, the light of her father’s life and her mother’s heartbeat echoing outside of her body. on weekends when her father’s off from work, they’ll walk the sidewalks near beach accesses, melting ice creams in fists as they pretend they’re the same tourists all of the attractions exist to draw in. their story isn’t the same as theirs, of course: they go back to their small house, barely two bedrooms and a card table in the dining room, but it still glimmers and glistens the way that idyllic childhoods do in all of the stories.

she’s a rambunctious handful of a child that’s akin to a bull in a china shop, so her parents decide to put her in a safe, padded space to exert that energy at the tender age of three years old. it’s not the shining star, elite gymnastics gym by any stretch of the imagination; it’s owned by a woman, retired from her own years of tumbling and dance on a larger scale, just trying to share her love with the community. daisy loves gymnastics. gymnastics is where she’s the happiest she’s possibly ever been — gymnastics is a reprieve from a home that’s squeezing a bit thin, the way her father is out more than he’s in these days and her mother is working two and a half jobs to keep the lights on. as she gets older, she understands that gymnastics is something she can pour herself into, work her frustrations away and delude herself into thinking she can dust the things weighing into her spine off her hands just like she does the excess chalk. she doesn’t understand why her dad slurs his words when he leaves, or why he never comes back ( she’s barely old enough to understand why he never comes back and the only place they can visit him is a plot of land ) but she understands things like discipline, balance, form. it’s the way that she sees the world.

gymnastics is the altar she prays to on the good days and bad, and her mother does everything possible to get her into a gym where she has a chance to become something great, someone on television that’s adorned with flowers and a medal on her neck. it’s not enough for daisy to just enjoy the thing she loves: she needs to be good, great, the best even. if the other kids at her gym give things 110%, she’s giving 135%, because she feels she has everything to lose. and gymnastics becomes her life until she can no longer see what life looked like without leotards and wrist braces, with her coach’s tough love mentality still reverberating in the empty halls of her brain as she clicks answers on her online tests to try and breeze through schoolwork for more practice time, without subconsciously pointing her toes at all times. she competes as soon as she’s allowed. sometimes her mother’s in the stands cheering her on, and sometimes it’s one of the other moms of kids who aren’t in her division and had been willing to chaperone her at the meet. her mother has given her entire life to her dream and daisy’s only existing achilles heel is her mom, so when a new man that can take away some of the financial burden and seems to really care about the two of them enters the picture, daisy tries to tamper down her teenage angst giving pushback to change in order to be happy. she’s thirteen when her mom remarries, and she’s fourteen when she places in the top five in her first national championship. “de león, that’s one to keep an eye on. kid’s got fire.” she grits her teeth and pours gasoline on herself and she tells herself that her coaches mean well the harder they push, because now they’re talking about things like the olympics and daisy wants it so bad it’s like a shark searching out a single drop of blood in the water. her eyes are ablaze every time she walks out on the mat but she is unflappable at every competition, every championship where she proves she’s meant to be there, beaming at her mother’s cheers and the homemade posters her step-dad makes. she rejects full rides to college with five rings closer on the horizon, and eventually, she is chosen for the 2012 olympics team. she is on cloud nine, and when they drape gold team and bronze solo medals around her neck, she is flying higher than she ever has.

and then, as they’re parading their successes around the nation, daisy gets injured. at first, it’s a routine ankle injury, but it makes getting back in the gym a bit more of a pain. she grinds her teeth to the gum, and she’s a champion now so she’s got no idea why her coach is still berating her like some incompetent child, and she is so desperate to be on back to back olympic teams that she ignores the pains in her ankle and now her shoulder and back. apparently her form is off, apparently she’s growing old and stale and if she wants a chance to just survive trials, she’d best get her ass in gear. she makes the us olympics team for 2016 by the skin of her teeth. daisy pushes the hardest she ever has when she gets to rio, so hard that she sweeps in solo gold medals and uses the ribbons to dry her tears. it feels like the comeback of the ages, and she comes home ready to gun for an unheard of third year in 2020.

up until she’s treated for stress fractures in her spine, and she’s set off the path to recover. she wants to fling herself back into training, a workaholic by trade and stubborn beyond belief on her good days, and everyone except for her coach advises against it. she returns to the gym in a whiplash turn around, and in her first competition post-olympics, she shreds her shoulder on the bars — it’s always the fucking bars, she thinks morbidly as they rush her to the emergency room, always the bars that ruins everything. she goes in for surgery, starts a years-long process of rehabbing it, and in between the appointments and arguing with her coach over the phone, she finds a new love in the form of her prescription pain pills. it’s a tale as old as time: she gets hooked, and then she’s so fucking dependent on them she doesn’t know up from down. she doesn’t just fall from grace in seclusion, either, she trips right off her pedestal. she tries to go in for a national championship on a rehabbed shoulder that’s in no shape to compete ( but her coach swears will be okay, she’s just being a pussy about it, and people aren’t going to give a shit about a twenty-five year old gymnast when there’s someone newer and better to look at ) and when she’s disqualified due to the drugs they find in her system, it’s all anyone talks about. her secret’s out, and she gets acquainted quick to numb, dust on her medals and leotards that cut off her circulation and a coach who quits on her and leaves her to fumble through press statements. her mother and step-father use the sponsorship money to pay for her first go in rehab, but she’s only out and clean for nine months before she landslides.

daisy’s washed up, forced into retirement. no one wants her to coach, no one wants her on the face of their cereal box, no one even wants to hear her talk about things like coming from poverty and beating addiction on their college campus because she’s not beating addiction, she’s floundering in it. it is a tidal wave and it has sucked her under into a riptide that there isn’t any escaping from. she spends the better part of twenty seven completely out of it, and she spends her twenty-eighth birthday unconscious. she’s thrust back in the spotlight once again, her old coach being terminated and another one of their gymnasts slapping a nice lawsuit to them that seems to stick for the years of emotional abuse ( oh, that’s what that is, daisy thinks ) and career-ending injuries and a whole slew of shady shit that plants the seed that maybe, just maybe, it was all rotten from the beginning and an upheaval of the roots was called for.

the disappointment in her mother’s eyes at her fallen star is practically too much to bear. she’s supplied with an ultimatum — move to colorado, where the air’s crisp and no one gives a shit and there’s a sober coach waiting for her, or it’s back to rehab and the swift cut of all ties, all funds, everything. she can do it on her own terms or someone else can be in control, and daisy needs to be in control. maybe it’s not the upheaval of the roots she wants, but she goes to providence peak with no expectations. aside from the fact that it can’t get worse. right?
