Every single song in the Devdas soundtrack is a masterpiece. Silsila Ye Chaahat Ka? Aishwarya Rai absolutely killed it. Maar Dala and Kaahe Chhed Mohe? Madhuri Dixit is the literal queen of dance. Morey Piya? One of the most romantic songs ever, and Kiron Kher stole the show. Chalak Chalak? Such a fun song to dance to. You’re lying if you say you don’t burst into tears every time you listen to Hamesha Tumko Chaha. And don’t even get me started on Dola Re Dola, two of the most iconic Bollywood actresses dancing to one of the best choreographed songs of all time. Sanjay Leela Bhansali did an amazing job with this movie and set the bar so insanely high that he will never top Devdas.

‘Madhuri Dixit acts with calculated spontaneity’: Tejas Deoskar
Mumbai native Madhuri Dixit has over 34 years of experience as an actress, but she has never starred in a Marathi film up until now.
In Tejas Prabha Vijay Deoskar’s Bucket List, Dixit plays a Maharashtrian housewife from Pune who transforms herself into a feisty woman and goes on to tick off a long wishlist, including learning to whistle, drinking alcohol and riding a motorbike.
“The biggest challenge was to deglamourise Madhuri Dixit for the role,” Deoskar told Scroll.in. “But after the release of the teaser, people are still commenting on her beauty. It is beauty that shines through because of her performance and how well she is carrying the personality of her character.”
Nagpur-born Deoskar has directed a number of shorts and two Marathi features, Ajinkya (2012), a sports drama, and Premsutra (2013), a romantic film. Bucket List has been written by Deoskar and Devashree Shivadekar, and also stars Renuka Shahane, Sumeet Raghavan and Shubha Khote. The movie will be released on May 25.
How did the story of ‘Bucket List’ come to you? The inspiration came from an article I read on the internet sometime in 2013 or 2014. It was a five-line story about a small event. It kept haunting me. I kept thinking what it would be like if something such as this happened to someone in India? It’s difficult to get into the details of the story now.
Around late 2016, I had developed it into a story. Right from the beginning, I had Madhuri ma’m in mind. I did not even know if she would do the film because she had not done a Marathi film before. But I knew that the lead character was an author-backed role, so most actors would choose it. I approached her manager with my story, and within three days, I was giving her a narration.
It was a big boost for me because an actress of her stature said she liked it. But she asked me to come back with a ready screenplay. I knew this was my last chance to make the movie. For six weeks, we [Devashree Shivadekar and Tejas Deoskar] sat day and night and produced up to five drafts.
How would you describe the theme of ‘Bucket List’? Bucket List is a slice-of-life coming-of-age film. It is a journey of self-realisation of a woman who is a housewife – a common character we see every day, be it our mothers, sisters or wives. Rather, it is the story of self-realisation of a person who happens to be a housewife.
And through doing the things she has on her bucket list, she discovers her identity that is lying dormant inside her. She realises that she has the right to enjoy life as well. We are often brought up in a way that we think of certain things in life as luxuries, when they are not. They are our birthright. We ignore them and move on. Bucket Listshows that people have the right to live lives the way they want to, and there is nothing wrong in that.
A bucket list is usually made by people about to die. Does your film involve death? A bucket list is not just for someone who is dying. You can die tomorrow or quite late, but everyone dies. And everyone has some things they would like to do in life – a bucket list.
My film is an inspiration for those who haven’t written a bucket list yet as well as for those who have written one but are not trying hard enough to complete it. Life is so unpredictable, you can die any day. What we are trying to do with Bucket List is to show people that instead of keeping death in mind, you can think of life, and try and complete what you wish to do.
What made Madhuri Dixit apt for the role? I grew up watching Madhuri Dixit’s films. I always thought that beyond the glamour, she was a fantastic actress. In both her hits and flops, regardless of how bad her role or the scene was, you could see her acting abilities. She gives 100 per cent to each role. Her sincerity comes across, even in some of the films you wouldn’t watch even if you were paid to do so. For a small song in Bade Miyan Chote Miyan(1998), she comes as just a guest star, but is still so good, and she is at par with one of the best comedic actors [Govinda].
I cast her not only for her beauty or glamour, but to exploit her dramatic skills. Sometimes, when you have a story in mind, and you keep thinking about the character, a name or a face fits into it like a jigsaw puzzle. That is how Madhuri Dixit happened to Bucket List.
What does Madhuri Dixit bring to the character of a Maharashtrian housewife? Everything. She ticks all the boxes. Remember that Madhuri Dixit is also someone’s wife, mother and daughter. That way, she is living the character daily in her life. It is not like we gave her a character she has never dealt with. But she is such a fantastic actress, she brings her own nuances to it.
Growing up as a Marathi boy, I always wanted to see her [Madhuri Dixit] in a Marathi film. But we should step out of the mentality of slamming her or holding it against her that she did not do a film in her mother tongue. As an actress, she would only work in the best possible environment and go for the best possible opportunities. Maybe, she did not get great roles. She told me that she had received quite a few Marathi film offers, but she did not find them worthy enough. I don’t think she let them go because she was a Hindi film actress.
Is Madhuri Dixit a spontaneous performer or does she come to the sets prepared? She rehearses a lot. When she would come to the set, she would know the script by heart, and then while shooting, she would add her own touch to a scene.
I give my actors a free hand. I let them understand a character and allow them to reproduce it in their own way. So she came prepared but she added her own little things – you could call it calculated spontaneity.
How has she evolved for audiences over time? Over the years, Madhuri Dixit has been this huge diva who has been looked up to as a glamour icon. But she is more than that. She is a great actress. Her roles in, say, Lajja (2001) or Devdas (2002), required acting of the highest order, and she delivered. It’s not like she was a glamour icon before, and she is changing to character-driven roles now. Even in her most commercial films, she was a strong performer.
She is doing another film now, Total Dhamaal, a full commercial venture, and, mark my words, even there, she will put in more than 100 percent. Her sincerity will show. It’s amazing how dedicated she is after working for 35 years.
Will she dance in ‘Bucket List’? Do you think Madhuri Dixit would not dance in a film? All will be revealed in due time.

The Hills Are Alive With The Sound Of Bollywood
When most Westerners who like musicals hear Switzerland mentioned, their first thought tends to be of the Julie Andrews classic, The Sound Of Music. Although technically that film is set in Austria and so features the German part of the Alpine range, the distinction is incidental to the beauty of the landscape.
Tumblr media
As an Indian born and raised in Switzerland, my first thought is of the long and beautiful relationship Switzerland has had with the Bollywood film industry. Sure my family celebrates Diwali every year and like most Indians living overseas, I adore my mother’s home-cooked Indian food above all else. But it wasn’t until I discovered Bollywood films at the age of eleven or so that I truly connected with the film industry which fused my Swiss home and Indian roots. The connection between the flair of Bollywood and staid but scenic Switzerland was largely down to one man, the late, great film-maker Yash Chopra. Father of film-maker Aditya Chopra and actor Uday Chopra, he was also one of the most successful and legendary Bollywood film-makers, with an iconic career spanning from 1959 to his death at age 80 in 2012.
Tumblr media
My personal connection with Yash Chopra movies is limited to his later films.  I loved the Shahrukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Karisma Kapoor-starrer Dil To Pagal Hai in 1997 and the old-fashioned but epic love story starring SRK and Preity Zinta, Veer-Zaara, in 2004. Incidentally, the song from Veer-Zaara which was filmed in Switzerland was ultimately cut from the film due to length.
youtube
Nonetheless, Switzerland has had an even longer and profound relationship with Mr. Chopra than the films I personally have seen. According to a 2014 report on newlyswissed.com, Chopra first came to Switzerland on honeymoon with his wife Pamela in 1970. The article documented the long history of Yash Chopra’s movies using Switzerland as the backdrop for countless romantic song and dances. It’s strangely fitting that a honeymoon trip began his long love affair with Switzerland, because some of the most romantic sequences in countless films have stemmed from that initial exposure. It has been reported that even the very last film Yash Chopra directed before his death, Jab Tak Hai Jaan, was meant to have sequences filmed in Switzerland but that plan was scrapped when he passed away before the film’s release.
Since 2012, the popularity of Bollywood filming all over Switzerland carved a new niche in even the German market. Entire shelves in German malls can now be found devoted to completely dubbed Bollywood films, hilarious to watch in German when one knows what the original language sounds like. The best translation fail I’ve ever seen in my life was in Karan Johar’s Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. In the film, Shahrukh Khan’s character was named Dev: The delivery itself was visibly over the top and dramatic when spoken in German rather than the original Hindi, but what made it even funnier were the subtitles. Every time “Dev” spoke or was referred to by another character, the subtitles would call him “Entwickler” which is German for “developer.” Whoever dubbed the film somehow got the idea that the name Dev was short for developer or development and every time I think about that, it cracks me up.
Tumblr media
While the landscape portrayed in the films themselves gives Indians a glimpse into the beauty of Switzerland, it goes both ways. Yash Chopra’s fondness of Swiss locations boosted tourism to such an extent that he has been honoured by the locals of Interlaken and more in multiple ways.
The government of Interlaken awarded Chopra the honorary title of Ambassador of Interlaken in 2011
Tumblr media
Jungfrau Railways named a train after him – an honour shared only with founder of the railways, Adolf Guyer
Tumblr media
The five-star Victoria Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa in Interlaken named a suite after Chopra, where visitors can spend a night for CHF2,250 ($2,347)
Tumblr media
In May 2016, Yash Chopra’s widow Pamela and daughter-in-law Rani Mukerji unveiled a 350kg bronze statue of the late film-maker
Tumblr media
Lake Lauenen, located near Gstaad, is now more commonly known as Chopra Lake, for being one of his pet filming locations
Tumblr media
I’m personally not the biggest fan of snow and ice, but even I can fully appreciate how magical the Swiss Alps must seem to the average Indian tourist. Yash Chopra tapped into the appeal of Switzerland’s lush meadows and quaint villages to give people who use Bollywood as a way to dream big something to aspire to. It was the 1995 directorial debut of his son Aditya Chopra, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, that was a game-changer for the since-then deep bond between Bollywood films and Switzerland. Fondly known simply as DDLJ, the Shahrukh Khan and Kajol-starring romance told the story of Raj and Simran, two Indians who fall in love on a train journey across Europe with the typical filmy hiccups during the course of their trip.
Tumblr media
For over two decades, a cinema hall in Mumbai regularly showed the film as it was such a nation-wide smash hit. For most people, the escape from reality that Raj and Simran’s journey offered made it the classic it is today. I suppose that’s why for over fifty years, Switzerland has represented the dream sequences and foreign location settings that usually made no sense in the scheme of any given film. It was always about giving viewers an idyllic and dreamy setting for the hero and heroine to proclaim their love in, whether relevant to the plot or not. Since I grew up in Switzerland, I sometimes feel like perhaps the novelty of how scenic it is has worn off. My appreciation for the crisp, fresh air and beautiful environment usually peaks in times of contrast; right after returning from an extended trip to India, for example.
Exotic backdrops have always been a big part of what gives Bollywood films that quality of escapism from the hardships of daily life. Yash Chopra came to be known as the king of romance for the way he wove stories around the beauty of the Swiss mountains and meadows. It’s safe to say that the gift of romantic story-telling must run in families because DDLJ united Shahrukh Khan and Kajol for the second time of many in their careers. Where Aditya Chopra turned Raj and Simran into a love story for every Indian to aspire to, my favourite thing to look out for in DDLJ is the cameo appearance of his cousin, Karan Johar. If I’m honest it was not Raj and Simran that truly ignited my personal passion for Bollywood films but Rahul and Anjali, twice over in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and then again in Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham. Whether one is Team Chopra or Johar, Dharma Productions or Yashraj Films, Bollywood movies are an undeniably acquired taste. I will always be grateful to have an entire film industry tying my two worlds, the Swiss and the Indian, together.
Tumblr media
The most mind-blowing thing to witness has been the response that Europe has had to Bollywood in the last few years. Switzerland has always been the backdrop that Bollywood fanatics dream about when they picture being romanced by SRK (at least I know I have). Now it’s not uncommon to find the remains of Indian snacks in the snowy peaks of the Alps, left behind by the constant flow of Indian tourists exploring the places Yash Chopra’s films exposed them to. Times are changing, in both Hollywood and Bollywood the racy style has become less shocking and more common than it was a few decades ago. But Yash Chopra put tenderness and truly epic love stories out into the world for future generations to enjoy forever and gave hopeless romantics like me something to dream about.

Favorite Disney movie and princess. Top 5 shahrukh khan films 🎥
Oh man that first question is so hard. Second question kind of easy, so let’s start with Mr. Khan first:
Top 5 6 Shah Rukh Khan movies (based on the fact I’ve rewatched only 6 of his movies that I’ve seen so far and I didn’t want to leave any of them off the rec list):
6. Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003)  - (7/10) I know it’s supposed to be a love triangle but it comes off as an OT3 kind of movie. Some parts of it could have used some tweaking but overall it makes me feel all the feels and I just really love all the characters.
5. Dil to Pagal Hai (1997) - (7/10) This was one of the first dozen or so Hindi movies I watched when I started watching about one movie a night a summer or two ago, and I fell in love with it, Madhuri Dixit, and Karisma Kapoor. It’s so 90′s it hurts me in a good way. If I ever get around to my screencap redraws I want to eventually  draw the ending because I love the use of color and Dixit is so pretty.
4. Darr (1993) (8/10) - One of the few SRK as a proper bad guy and not a cool ass kind of bad guy. Basically he plays a spoiled loser who stalks his university crush and it keeps building until a climax on a boat. As much as I love Sunny Deol, though, he seems kind of old for his role as the husband, but that’s kind of par for the course with any movie industry really. The Kiran song haunts me sometimes.
3. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) - This movie, Like Dil to Pagal Hai is also so 90′s it hurts me in a good way. I love all the characters and it plays into the concept of you should love your best friend, which is something I have believed strongly for a long time now. I think some parts of it could have been tweaked, but the ending sequence between Aman, Anjali, and Rahul really makes the movie for me.
2. Mohabbatein (2000) - This movie is Dead Poets Society (1989) meets Love’s Labour’s Lost to a degree, which means it was already going to win me over no matter what. I watched it when I was in a kind of dark psychological state. I was grappling with the realization that I likely was never going to get a romantic partner or have children someday, and it sent me into a point in which I was closing myself off to a lot of people. I can’t remember what the exact lines are off the top of my head but there’s something Rahul says in this movie that really touched me and kind of made me realize closing myself off was really dumb. And that’s when I started to accept my situation and move on in a more healthy manner. Which is weird, I know, but I don’t really have many people to talk, let alone who would want to hear me talk about depressing things, so sometimes these types of revelations come from movies instead of real life for me.
1. Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001) - I’m just going to be up front and honest here if Rahul and Rohan weren’t 11 years apart in this movie, I’m not sure it’d have made the same magnitude of impact on me or become so special to me. This movie plays into the part of me that loves Little Women. I’m not really sure why, so I’d have loved this movie anyway even if the main guys weren’t the same age difference I have with my older sister. It’s so so so so SO rare for me to find siblings with our age difference, and so very rare for me to relate to a character who’s the younger sibling instead of the older sibling since more frequently siblings in TV and movies reflect the age difference I have with our brother (5 years). This movie just plays my emotions like a violin. When our dog died, this is the movie I watched because I knew it would help me not feel so stupid for crying alone in my bedroom.
~*~
Okay, now for favorite Disney movie and Disney princess. This is a hard choice because I grew up with a lot of Disney movies and I was fascinated by them because I am hardwired for writing and contemplating how others write things, though I’m more analytical on purpose about that now than I used to be as a kid.
Anyway…
Favorite Disney movies:
Live action: The Parent Trap (1961) - I watched this one into the ground. I just loved all of it. I’m pretty sure I could recite it while watching it even to this day
Not about princesses: Robin Hood (1973)  - Historical fiction is my jam
Princess movie: Tie between Sleeping Beauty (1959), Beauty and the Beast (1991), and Aladdin (1992)  - Sleeping Beauty was my go to fave princess movie from the moment I watched it. I also liked that, compared to other princess movies before it, Prince Phillip actually does stuff and truly conducts a proper rescue. Beauty and the Beast is on par because when I was six I couldn’t believe there was a Disney princess who looked just like me and read voraciously like I did and I really liked that she thought Gaston was a moron. Aladdin I love because the story is just so engaging and the characters are as well. I also liked that Jasmine and Aladdin both had amble parts to play, which gave me more to relate to than some of the other princess movies that came before
Favorite Disney princesses:
Aurora because she was my first favorite
Belle because she really validated me as a kid
Jasmine because she stood up for what she wanted and she was just as much the hero as Aladdin was
Tiana because she has a lot of morals, values, and hobbies that align with my own. I also know I’d have loved her as a kid too.
