No matter how long it is, you usually have an idea of the ending point when creating a work of fiction. Sequels can complicate this, of course, sequels with changing targets, people coming and going behind the scenes, and the general passage of time complicating the ending as originally written. In 1989, following on from the cliffhanger, the franchise could have gone anywhere, instead, it laid…

Massacre in Dinosaur Valley (1985)

There’s one genre of horror that feels particularly daunting to explore: the “cannibal horror” genre. Its best-known entry, 1980's Cannibal Holocaust is notorious for its real-life footage of animal killings and anyone whose interest is peaked hearing this probably needs psychological help. Then there’s the inherent racism of these stories: the plots almost always concern a group of urban people who encounter savage aboriginals that want nothing more than to butcher, cook and then eat white meat. You're curious why the genre was so prolific but you don’t want to be offended so you pick the most ridiculous-sounding entry of them all: Massacre in Dinosaur Valley. The idea is that when your hapless explorers are getting torn apart by prehistoric reptiles, it will be easy to forget about what’s socially acceptable and just laugh between the “yuck!” scenes.

Deep in the Amazon jungle live the reclusive Aquera Indians: a tribe of cannibals who have little contact with the outside world. Their territory contains the “Dinosaur Valley”, a bone-bed rich with fossils and hidden dangers. Palaeontologist Kevin Hall (Michael Spokiw), Professor Pedro Ibañez (Leonidas Bayer), his daughter Eva (Suzanne Carvalho), fashion models Belinda (Susan Hahn) and Monica (Maria Reis), Vietnam vet John Heinz (Milton Morris) and his wife Betty (Marta Anderson) are flying over the off-limits area when their plane suddenly crashes. The survivors must find a way back to civilization before they become victims of the jungle surrounding them.

Originally shot in Italian, then dubbed in English, no one - on camera or otherwise - gives a good performance. That only matters so much because you’re not here for high art. What you’re here for is the sleaze. You want nudity? Massacre in Dinosaur Valley has it in droves. We get to see the supermodels changing, Eva showering, a gratuitous sex scene that comes out of nowhere, a sadistic lesbian that can’t wait to tear Belinda’s top off and when the ladies get captured by the Aquera Indians (that’s what the movie calls them so I will too), the cannibals promptly rip off their clothes and give them new outfits that barely cover anything. The objective was to find as many ways to show the actresses barring it all - logic or tact be damned. When Eva is shown in the nude (there’s quite a bit of full-frontal nudity), she’s showering with the doors to the bathroom and hotel room wide open so anyone can walk in. When Kevin wanders inside looking for her father, he gets a nice view. He gives her a towel, but she only realizes a stranger provided the helping hand after about 30 seconds. My question is… who did she THINK was helping her dry off? Her father? Gross.

Speaking of gross, how’s the gore? Disappointing, unfortunately. With a title like Massacre in Dinosaur Valley, you expect to see the idiots who stumble into that green inferno getting dismembered, decapitated, flayed alive and otherwise brutalized before getting eaten - either by dinosaurs or racist caricatures. Someone does get eaten but it’s nothing spectacular and isn’t treated as such either, which is a letdown. By my count, there are two massacres in this movie. Too bad it’s not the people you expect that get reduced to deli meat. Most of our ill-fated adventurers bite the dust because of non-cannibal dangers, which you might not think is a big deal. It’s not called Massacre in Cannibal Valley, am I right? Just wait.

The film could essentially be split into three parts, only one of which has anything to do with that titular valley. Part one is a story filled with quicksand, flesh-eating jungle beasts and other clichés. Part two concerns the cannibals. Part three, the white slavers! Between these three hurried plots, fans of bad movies will have some laughs. There’s plenty of questionable behavior spread throughout, the gratuitous nudity is so outlandish it’s hard not to crack a smile, the body count is so extreme it's hilarious, there are plenty of ideas introduced and then dropped and at points, it’s hard to tell if the movie is implying certain things or if the filmmaking and continuity are just THAT BAD. A lot of stuff just happens because writer/director Michele Massimo Tarantini wanted it to happen. Logic had nothing to do with it.

Massacre in Dinosaur Valley is better shot than you'd think, the plot moves along quickly enough to prevent you from getting bored and it manages to be so incompetent you skip the phase where you’d be offended and go directly to rolling your eyes while chuckling at the pathetic attempts at storytelling. All this SHOULD make for a decent “so bad it’s good” cannibal film… if it weren’t for one glaring flaw. There are no dinosaurs in this movie. None! What a ripoff! (November 5, 2021)

This year's Winter trip: Ski Lodge in Aspen, Colorado! The trip will take place starting December 28th and ending January 7th. Everyone will be staying at Aspen Meadows. There will not be an itinerary for this trip, but there are shuttles into town for restaurants, shopping and other entertainment.

Room Assignments: Each group will be in a suite with two King beds and a queen pull out. each suite has TV, microwave, fridge, balcony, wet bar, and room service access. All students must be in their assigned rooms between Midnight-7am.

Nascido em uma rica família saudita, ele foi apontado como o principal responsável por ataques terroristas nas Torres Gêmeas e ao Pentágono no dia 11 de setembro de 2001. A morte de Bin Laden ocorreu após operação de forças norte-americanas no interior do Paquistão, em 2 de maio de 2011. No dia 5 de maio, a morte do militar francês Napoleão Bonaparte completa 200 anos. Depois de liderar uma política expansionista da França no século 19 e ser derrotado por forças inglesas e russas, Napoleão morreu em 5 de maio de 2021, na Ilha de Santa Helena - onde ficou exilado por anos. Em 2015, o História Hoje relembrou a última derrota do imperador: Também no dia 5 de maio, uma importante decisão do STF completa dez anos. Neste dia, em 2011, o Supremo Tribunal Federal reconheceu que casais homoafetivos poderiam ser incluídos no regime jurídico de união estável. A decisão, referendada por unanimidade, abriu caminho para que casais do mesmo sexo pudessem ter mais direitos desde então. No meio artístico brasileiro, a semana é repleta de datas que celebram o nascimento de figuras marcantes. No dia 4, o músico Herbert Vianna completa 60 anos. Líder do grupo Os Paralamas do Sucesso, Herbert foi homenageado em algumas ocasiões por programadas das Rádios EBC. Em 2016, o programa Cultura é Você falou sobre a trajetória do cantor e do acidente que o deixou paraplégico em 2001. No mesmo dia, o nascimento do cineasta Rogério Sganzerla (falecido em 2004) completa 75 anos. Diretor do clássico O Bandido da Luz Vermelha (filme de 1968), ele acabou sendo conhecido como um dos maiores nomes de um movimento chamado Cinema Marginal que, em meio à ditadura, conseguiu ter um caráter transgressor do Brasil. Em 2016, o Portal EBC trouxe a biografia de Sganzerla. A cantora Beth Carvalho (que morreu em 2019) também completaria 75 anos nesta semana. Nascida em 5 de maio de 1946, ela é um dos maiores nomes da história do samba e foi participou de alguns programas na TV Brasil. Uma das apresentações foi no programa Samba da Gamboa e pode ser vista abaixo: A semana ainda tem o nascimento da humorista Zezé Macedo (que faleceu em 1999 e completaria 105 anos no dia 6 de maio) e da atriz Betty Faria, que completa 80 anos no dia 8 de maio. Era muito pequeno para assistir suas primeiras novelas ‘Corrida do Ouro (1974)’, ‘Senhora (1975)’, ‘Helena (1975)’, ‘Bravo! (1975)’, ‘Escrava Isaura (1976)’ ou ‘Dancin’Days. Foi nas reprises das duas últimas que ‘entendi’ melhor as tramas.

Da famosa novela das 18h com a escrava branca, duas certezas: Lucélia Santos nunca me convenceu e Léa Garcia era uma grande atriz. Sua vilã Rosa provocava um misto de admiração e medo. Seus enormes olhos pareciam devorar a tela e sua inveja pela mocinha era tão gritante que aquilo causava curiosidade.

Foi o melhor papel em TV da grande – e injustiçada – atriz Léa, que infelizmente não teve outra oportunidade como aquela em sua carreira.

Pela questão da idade, a única coisa que me marcou em ‘Dancin’ Days (1978)’ eram as cenas nas pistas de dança. Também só fui ‘entender’ a trama com as reprises. Certamente Julia Matos foi o grande momento de Sonia Braga nas novelas da TV Globo, assim como Yolanda Platini iniciava a galeria de grandes personagens de Joana Fomm.

A reprise de ‘Água Viva (1980)’ no Canal Viva me ajudou a entender a fascinação que Tonia Carreira despertava no público. Sua Stella Fraga Simpson, a adorável e moderna colunável roubou a cena. Antes da infame Odete Roitman, Beatriz Segall interpretou a vilã Lourdes Mesquita. Mas era uma mulher tão chata que tenho muita preguiça.

Não me lembro da trama de ‘Brilhante (1981), apesar de saber do sucesso que Fernanda Montenegro fez como Chica Newman e Denis Carvalho, como seu filho Inácio. O mesmo digno sobre ‘Louco Amor (1983).

‘Corpo a Corpo (1984)’ me marcou por três coisas: Zezé Motta como Sonia, a primeira ‘mocinha’ negra que tenho lembrança, a vilã Joana Fomm, Lúcia Gouveia e o quanto Flávio Galvão era gostoso como o ‘diabo’ contratado para atormentar a protagonista Eloá (Debora Duarte).

Em 1988, ‘O Primo Basílio’ trouxe Marília Pera como a vilã Juliana, atormentando a vida da mocinha Luísa. Sensacional seria a melhor definição para sua atuação.

Meses depois, estreava ‘Vale Tudo’. Bom... Revi no Viva e no Globo Play... E continuava imbatível como minha novela preferida. Tantos grandes personagens Maria de Fátima (Glória Pires), Heleninha Roitman (Renata Sorrah), Odetle Roitman (Beatriz Segall), Celina Aguiar Junqueira (Nathalia Timberg), Marco Aurélio (Reginaldo Faria), Solange Duprat (Lídia Brondi), Aldeie Candeias (Lilia Cabral)... Quanto a protagonista... Já não gostava de Raquel Accioli antes da atriz Regina Duarte ter ligação com o governo atual... Depois, então...

‘O Dono do Mundo’ deu ao Fagundes o vilão Felipe Barreto e juntou Fernanda Montenegro (Olga Portela) num antológico embate com Nathalia Timberg (Constância Eugênia). Também foi o grande momento de Maria Padilha, como Karen. Infelizmente o Globo Play ainda não disponibilizou a trama.

E... Chegamos a clássica minissérie ‘Anos Rebelde’, de 1992, escrita com uma maestria impar por Gilberto ao retratar dois lados de um triste e marcante capítulo da história brasileira, a ditadura. São tantas qualidades artísticas... Claudia Abreu como a inesquecível Heloísa, Cássio Gabus Mendes como João Alfredo, Betty Lago como Natália, Pedro Cardoso como Galeno Quintanilha e até Malu Mader convenceu como a chata Maria Lúcia. Considero a obra prima de Gilberto.

‘Pátria Minha (1994) foi uma novela problemática. Apesar de adorar Claudia Abreu, sua mocinha idealista Alice Proença parecia uma versão atualizada da chata Maria Lúcia (de ‘Anos Rebeldes’). Guardei na memória a vilã Loretta Ramos de Marieta Severo. ‘Duas gotas e meia de adoçante’ foi a frase que a definiu na trama.

Momento complicado foi a cena no qual o personagem Raul Pelegrini humilha o submisso jardineiro negro Kennedy que não reage. Lembro-me do quanto aquilo me deixou incomodado. O Movimento Negro precisou notificar juridicamente os responsáveis pela novela. Pior: um dos roteiristas respondeu dizendo que a atitude era ‘um atentado à liberdade de expressão!

Porcamente, o assunto se encerrou com um dialogo entre os personagens negros Kennedy e Zilá, no qual ela condenava o racismo. Só! Pelo amor, né?

Confesso que minha admiração por Gilberto começou a sumir. Depois de tantos anos acreditando no seu texto, num momento crucial e dramático de racismo explícito, ele preferiu pulverizar o assunto buscando um caminho ‘em cima do muro’.

Com isso, não assisti direito ‘Força de um Desejo’. Era uma novela das 18h e a trama não me chamou a atenção. Lembro que me empolguei com a participação de Sônia Braga, porém, como sua personagem morre no início. Deixei de assistir, mesmo sabendo que Nathalia Timberg vive um grande momento como a vilã Idalina Menezes de Albuquerque Silveira.

Em 2003, Gilberto acertou com ‘Celebridade’, fazendo um ótimo retrato da Era que dominaria o novo milênio, quando ‘ser famoso’ tornou-se o mantra.

Claudia Abreu roubou a cena como Laura Prudente da Costa, a ‘Laura Cachorrona’, assim como Fábio Assunção como ‘Renato Mendes’, Deborah Secco como a impagável ‘modelo, atriz, manicure’ Darlene Sampaio e Ana Beatriz Nogueira, como a Ana Paula Diniz, a irmã invejosa de Maria Clara Diniz. Alias, apesar de parecer repetitiva no mesmo tipo de personagem, Malu Mader também deu conta do recado.

Usando o artifício do ‘Quem Matou?’, que movimentou a trama nas semanas finais, foi uma ducha de água fria a escolha da vilã Laura como a responsável pela morte de Lineu Vasconcelos. Não teve qualquer coerência.

Quatro anos depois, Gilberto voltaria como ‘Paraíso Tropical (2007)’, que errou na escolha de Alessandra Negrini como as gêmeas Paula e Taís. Era para ser Claudia Abreu, que engravidou na época. Apesar de muito talentosa, Alessandra é uma atriz de composição e longe dos tipos naturalistas, tão caros na obra de Gilberto. Não funcionou em nenhuma das personagens. Parecia robótica.

Com isso, Camila Pitanga e Wagner Moura roubaram a cena com a prostituta Bebel e o vilão Olavo.

Outros quatro anos depois, em 2011, Gilberto escreveu ‘Insensato Coração’. Escolhida para ser a protagonista, Ana Paula Arósio desistiu quando as gravações estavam começando. A atriz arrumou suas malas e foi embora de volta ao Rio de Janeiro no mesmo dia, avisando a produção que não havia gostado do perfil da personagem após ler os roteiros dos primeiros capítulos e que não faria mais parte da novela. Depois de vários testes, Paolla Oliveira assumiu o personagem.

O destaque da novela foi Gabriel Braga Nunes como o vilão Leo. A personagem Norma de Gloria Pires ficou no meio do caminho entre interessante e chata. Apesar do talento de Deborah Secco, sua Natalie Lamour parecia uma continuação de Darlene Sampaio, de ‘Celebridade’.

Ana Lúcia Torre, como a mau caráter Tia Neném, também roubou a cena.

Apesar da quantidade de personagens LGBTQIA+ e propor algumas discussões, não houve qualquer avanço.

E... O primeiro capítulo de ‘Babilônia’, de 2015, foi incrível. Gloria Pires aparecia como uma ‘devoradora de homens’ e Adriana Esteves prometia como uma mulher invejosa. Ambas funcionavam como contraponto a chata mocinha Camila Pitanga.

Pela primeira vez numa novela brasileira, Fernanda Montenegro e Nathalia Timberg formaram um idoso casal de lésbicas. E logo na primeira sequência, tascam um lindo na boca.

Porém, o que era para ser um momento antológico, revelou-se uma das maiores decepções. A trama empacou, esvaziou-se muito rápido e personagens foram se modificando e ficando óbvios.

Nem o inegável talento das atrizes salvou a trama do conservadorismo que estava ganhando espaço nas TVs abertas, principalmente com as estreias das novelas bíblicas da TV Record.

Foi um triste canto do cisne de Gilberto Braga, que morreu na terça-feira, 26 de outubro, aos 75 anos.

Carmen Miranda (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈkaɾmẽȷ̃ miˈɾɐ̃dɐ]; born Maria do Carmo Miranda da Cunha; 9 February 1909 – 5 August 1955) was a Portuguese-born Brazilian samba singer, dancer, Broadway actress, and film star who was active from the 1930s on. Nicknamed "The Brazilian Bombshell", Miranda is known for her signature fruit hat outfit she wore in her American films. As a young woman, she designed hats in a boutique before making her first recordings with composer Josué de Barros in 1929. Miranda's 1930 recording of "Taí (Pra Você Gostar de Mim)", written by Joubert de Carvalho, catapulted her to stardom in Brazil as the foremost interpreter of samba.

During the 1930s, Miranda performed on Brazilian radio and appeared in five Brazilian chanchadas, films celebrating Brazilian music, dance, and the country's carnival culture.Hello, Hello Brazil! and Hello, Hello, Carnival! embodied the spirit of these early Miranda films. The 1939 musical Banana da Terra (directed by Ruy Costa) gave the world her "Baiana" image, inspired by African-Brazilians from the northeastern state of Bahia.

In 1939, Broadway producer Lee Shubert offered Miranda an eight-week contract to perform in The Streets of Paris after seeing her at Cassino da Urca in Rio de Janeiro.The following year she made her first Hollywood film, Down Argentine Way with Don Ameche and Betty Grable, and her exotic clothing and Lusophone accent became her trademark. That year, she was voted the third-most-popular personality in the United States; she and her group, Bando da Lua, were invited to sing and dance for President Franklin D. Roosevelt. In 1943, Miranda starred in Busby Berkeley's The Gang's All Here, which featured musical numbers with the fruit hats that became her trademark. By 1945, she was the highest-paid woman in the United States.

Miranda made 14 Hollywood films between 1940 and 1953. Although she was hailed as a talented performer, her popularity waned by the end of World War II. Miranda came to resent the stereotypical "Brazilian Bombshell" image she had cultivated, and attempted to free herself of it with limited success. She focused on nightclub appearances and became a fixture on television variety shows. Despite being stereotyped, Miranda's performances popularized Brazilian music and increased public awareness of Latin culture. In 1941, she was the first Latin American star to be invited to leave her hand and footprints in the courtyard of Grauman's Chinese Theatre, and was the first South American honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Miranda is considered the precursor of Brazil's 1960s Tropicalismo cultural movement. A museum was built in Rio de Janeiro in her honor, and she was the subject of the documentary Carmen Miranda: Bananas is My Business (1995).
