How Can Triathlon Swim Training Improve Your Performance?
Introduction:
Triathlon, a demanding multisport event comprising swimming, cycling, and running, requires athletes to excel in each discipline. Among these, the swimming leg often poses unique challenges. Triathlon swim training, however, holds the key to unlocking performance improvements and enhancing overall race outcomes. In this comprehensive guide, we delve into the various ways triathlon swim training can elevate your performance and contribute to success in this challenging sport.
Tumblr media
Enhanced Endurance and Stamina:
Triathlon swim training focuses on building endurance and stamina, crucial elements for success in any endurance sport. Consistent training helps improve cardiovascular fitness, allowing athletes to cover longer distances with greater ease. As your body adapts to the demands of sustained swimming, you'll experience increased stamina, contributing to improved performance in the water and throughout the entire triathlon.
Optimized Technique and Form:
Efficient swimming technique is paramount in a triathlon, as poor form can lead to wasted energy and increased fatigue. Dedicated swim training provides an opportunity to refine and optimize your stroke technique, body positioning, and breathing. By honing these skills, you'll not only move through the water more effortlessly but also conserve energy for the subsequent cycling and running legs.
Increased Speed and Power:
Triathlon swim training incorporates drills and exercises designed to enhance speed and power in the water. Building strength in key muscle groups, such as the core, shoulders, and legs, contributes to more powerful and efficient swimming strokes. As your speed increases, you'll be better positioned to navigate open water conditions and gain a competitive edge in the swim leg.
Improved Mental Toughness:
The open water environment, varying weather conditions, and the physical demands of a triathlon swim can be mentally challenging. Triathlon swim training exposes athletes to different scenarios, helping build mental toughness and resilience. Overcoming obstacles in training prepares you to face the uncertainties of race day with confidence, ultimately contributing to improved overall performance.
Efficient Transitions:
Transitioning smoothly between swim, bike, and run legs is a crucial aspect of triathlon success. Dedicated swim training not only improves your swimming abilities but also enhances your ability to transition seamlessly to the next discipline. As you become more accustomed to moving from the water to the bike and then to the run, you'll save valuable time and energy during the race.
Strategic Breathing Techniques:
Triathlon swim training places a strong emphasis on mastering breathing techniques. Efficient breathing is essential for maintaining a steady rhythm and preventing fatigue. Through specific drills and exercises, athletes learn to synchronize their breathing with their strokes, allowing for a more controlled and sustainable swim pace.
Adaptation to Open Water Challenges:
Open water conditions present unique challenges, including waves, currents, and limited visibility. Triathlon swim training often takes place in open water settings, allowing athletes to adapt to these challenges. Exposure to varying conditions helps build confidence and prepares athletes for the unpredictable nature of race day, ensuring they can navigate open water with skill and efficiency.
Tumblr media
Prevention of Overuse Injuries:
Overuse injuries are common in triathletes, particularly in the shoulders and upper body. Triathlon swim training programs are designed to balance intensity and volume, reducing the risk of overuse injuries. Proper warm-up routines and recovery strategies further contribute to the overall well-being of athletes, allowing for sustained training and improved performance.
Strategic Training Plans:
Effective triathlon swim training involves structured and strategic planning. Training plans are tailored to individual skill levels, goals, and race distances. By following a well-designed program that gradually increases intensity and volume, athletes can optimize their preparation and peak at the right time, ensuring they are race-ready and capable of achieving their performance objectives.
Competitive Advantage in Races:
Ultimately, the goal of triathlon swim training is to provide a competitive advantage during races. A well-trained swimmer can enter the bike leg with less fatigue, setting the stage for a strong overall performance. By investing time and effort into swim training, athletes position themselves for success in the swim leg and the entire triathlon.
Conclusion:
Triathlon swim training is not just about becoming a better swimmer; it's about transforming into a more well-rounded and resilient triathlete. Through targeted training, athletes can expect improvements in endurance, technique, mental toughness, and overall race performance. By embracing the challenges of swim training, triathletes set themselves on a path to success in the water and across the entire triathlon course.

Reposted @totaltritraining Wondering if to book onto a TTT training camp? Read Emma Jane’s review… “Homeward bound after a week of camp. It’s my third time doing a TTT triathlon camp and each time they get better and better, I mean what’s not to love getting out on your bike in 29 degrees of pure sunshine in the hills of Lanzarote with likeminded athletes…… I even managed to beat my top speed of 45mph, a little squeaky bum moment 😂😂. A big thank you to all the coaches for a fantastic week” Thank you Emma Jane . Emma even had her own personal bike mechanic and got a trip to see a parrot 🦜😂. We have a few places left on our next camps; Mallorca spring camp: https://www.totaltritraining.com/mallorca-training-camp/ AND… Nice, World Champs Recon Weekend: https://www.totaltritraining.com/nice-france-training-camp-and-world-champs-recon/ Or to book, use the link in our bio or head to our website. . . . . #ironmantraining #ironman #triathlon #swimbikerun #triathlontraining #triathlete #ironmantri #tri #trilife #running #cycling #triathlonlife #run #swimming #training #swim #bike #world #ironmantriathlon #tritraining #fitness #motivation #runner #athlonlife #triathlonmotivation #cyclinglife #triathletes #triatlon #swimmer (at Sands Beach Resort Lanzarote) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp8abPBLEk1/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Trial Runs
The weekend long runs leading up to the Boston Marathon were trial periods as well as training runs for me.  It’s impossible to think you can do something physically, like running a marathon, by just thinking you can; instead you need to prove to yourself you can. It isn’t so different in entrepreneurship when the idea to start a business, grow it successfully, and reap in the profits can be dreamed about, but not realized unless you test run the idea through a business plan, with advisors, and tweaking the specifics of the plan a year into running it. What we envision isn’t always what we face when we begin and try.
As I jumped on my bike in 35 degrees, cool, sunny, but very windy conditions this Saturday to test a combination biking and running sequence before next week’s first ever mini-triathlon, I knew I had to try my hardest while timing myself in 15-minute increments to see the mileage I biked and ran individually for some comparison for myself for the upcoming race. I bike. I run. I don’t bike and then run after each other, so it was a test. Since the mini triathlon is based on timing and not distance since it was a created event by RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology) to give people a taste of what a triathlon is like, I needed to put the sports back-to-back to see how my body responded. Since my pool is closed this time of year due to snow, the 15-minute swim portion will be a mystery until I get in their pool. As a long time swimmer, I know I can do it but adding a third and different sport to the other two might test me a bit but, I’m ready.
When I think back to launching my two company websites in a span of ten years, I remember needing to have the websites tested before they went live. I invited friends and business associates to “test” it out and tell me what they thought. I ended up tweaking the pages based on their experiences. Similar to today when I only ran 1 mile in 15 minutes, I know to improve my distance for the event, I need to run more 1-milers this week to get more speed down. I wouldn’t have had that feeling if I waited until the actual event to see I needed more training in the run portion of the event. Even though I’m not going for a medal (or am I for my age group at least?), it is still wise to put in the miles, tests, and trails to get a sense of where you stand, what you need to improve, and to help guide you the day of the event or launch. When you put in the miles, your mind knows you’ve done your best to prepare for what is ahead. It is then only up to you to do your best and succeed. Wish me luck next week!

Spending time with you | A.H.
Pairing: Aaron Hotchner x fem!reader
Content warning: fluff, reader can’t swim
Word Count: 0.8K
Summary: Training and swimming, he didn't really care about. Just as long as he was spending time with you.
Request: Hiii! I have a request that can be fun/funny and a cute read for a summer day hehe what about Hotch teaching reader how to swim? she’s been embarrassed to let him know she doesn’t know how to but since he’s getting ready for his triathlon (maybe another one, not the same as season 7 so a slightly older Hotch if you want🤭) and she’s joined him for runs and biking, the only thing left is the swimming! 🩷
A/N: this is the shortest thing i’ve written so far, but this mild writer's block has been kicking my ass. and so has my hyper-fixation on writing all my requests, babes is struggling. but yeah, this one is a cutie, so enjoy!
Ps: girly also doesn't know how to swim so - my husband's gonna take care of me, don't worry
Requests are CLOSED!
Tumblr media
You kicked your legs, letting the cold water splash around. You gripped into the edge of the pool tightly, as you looked on over, trying to see the bottom and failing. It wasn’t possible - at three meters deep, just looking at the darkness down there made your stomach rage with nerves.
You swallowed, took a deep breath, and turned around to see him fastening a fitness watch on his wrist.
The navy blue swim trunks he was wearing were highlighting his body well. He looked almost the same as the last time he’d done the triathlon - 4 years ago. But there were just a few small differences too. The smile lines adorning both his eyes and lips were now even more prominent. The small, but barely noticeable tummy he had was highlighted deliciously when he was wearing a dress shirt. And of course, the salt and pepper hair he’d decided not to dye this last time.
He looked good, he looked hot, but even his body, the whole package you’d forever be in love with, couldn’t distract you from the worry you felt, the mild fear.
When he’d asked you to help him train for the annual FBI triathlon, you couldn’t tell him no. You loved spending the extra time with him - you loved seeing him active and you loved the goofy smile he got after a good run or some biking.
Funny enough, you liked it too - the adrenaline, smiling in his direction, finishing up on a walk with your hands intertwined, a bit out of breath. The naps that followed after that were cuddling close to him, spooning him, and having him spoon you.
After finishing up with the running and biking, the only thing left was swimming, which was why you found yourself holding onto the edge for dear life, your heart beating like crazy. Because, see, when you’d agreed to help your husband train for the triathlon, you’d forgotten to mention one very important detail - you’d never learned how to swim.
Three weeks of training and you hadn’t gathered the courage to tell him - so here you were, worried, overtaken by fear, watching as he jumped into the pool head first.
Seconds later, he swam to the surface and took a deep breath. His hands pushed at the wet strands back, and he started swimming in your direction.
He settled between your legs with a smile. His hands ran across your outer thighs, massaging the skin and getting them all wet.
You reached for him, pushing a strand of hair off his forehead, before your palm settled on his cheek and you ran your thumb across his stubble. You loved the barely there facial hair he’d let grow in the last few days.
“You ready?” He asked, turning his head to lay a small kiss on your wrist. You looked deep into his eyes, as you chewed at the inside of your lip. He must have seen, because he reached up and ran his thumb across your lips, pulling it out a bit to stop you from assaulting the tender flesh anymore.
Your heart pounded and you felt your palms warm up.
“Actually, I need to tell you something first.” You whispered, as the feeling of mortification and embarrassment suddenly overtook you. So many years of your childhood, and your life were wasted, unable to learn something so basic.
You watched as his brows furrowed in worry, his eyes shining bright in wonder, “What is it, honey?”
You bit at your lip again, only to have him pull at it again with a shake of his head. You pulled both your hands into your lap, and looked down, suddenly unable to meet his eyes.
“Idon’tknowhowtoswim.” You rushed to say quietly
“I don’t think I caught that, honey.” He pushed your chin up and searched your eyes for an answer.
You exhaled, “I don’t know how to swim, Aaron. I never learned.” You finally admit, eyes squeezing shut.
It was quiet for a second.
“Open your eyes, honey.” You did as he said, and watched as his finger ran across your rings, his own sparkling in the lightning, “Doesn’t matter that you can’t swim. I can teach you if you want, or you can just sit right here and enjoy the view.” His lips pulled in a small smirk before he kissed your sternum.
“I don’t care if you train with me or not. I asked so I could spend more time with you. Either way, we’re together.”
“You’re a good husband, Aaron.” You said as you leaned down to steal a kiss. He pulled you in as much as he could given the awkward position, and gave you a few quick pecks.
“And you’re an even better wife, honey.” He whispered.
In the end, you let him pull you into the water, holding onto him tightly as you floated around and he showed you the easiest way to swim. He held you, helped you, and hyped you up when you succeeded. He really was the best husband ever.

@jegulus-microfic jan 22 - cry - 873 words
sapphic jegulus feat. pregnant!jamie (and the wonders/horrors of hormones)
“Mh,” James makes around the mouthful of pretzels she keeps dipping into the Nutella, “He’s kicking again!”
Regulus is already off the step ladder, overalls clad knees hitting the plastic covered floor next to where James is slouched in their camping deck chair.
They’re painting the nursery today. Or, Regulus is, while James is putting up her feet as ordered (not by the midwife but by her god damn fiancé so she better listen) and dipping pickled cucumbers into the chocolate cream as well whenever she thinks Regulus isn’t paying attention.
Which she is never not, and especially since James came back to bed out of their en-suite bathroom with a positive pregnancy test that fateful day a few months ago.
James licks her lips off crumbs and takes Regulus’ hand to where Harry is pedaling away inside her stomach, placing her palm over Regulus’ pale fingers.
It doesn’t take too long for Regulus to feel the skin move under her own palm, James’ skin warm where her shirt has ridden up over the bump.
For a woman that’s refusing to put on anything pregnancy wear related she’s been pretty keen on the idea of Regulus in an old crop top and overalls for her painting get-up.
James chuckles above her when Harry goes a little wild at Regulus’ proximity—she’s convinced he can already differentiate between his two moms.
Regulus less so, since he’s barely the size of an eggplant and all.
Still, she indulges her fiancé, and it’s true nonetheless that speaking to the baby firms the connection even as it’s still inside the womb.
Regulus hums happily, lips tugging at the corners and out of the corner of her eye she sees James’ nose scrunching in delight.
“Hello, babyboy,” she speaks at the belly, “Already training for your first triathlon in there, huh?”
James shakes the shaggy hair out of her doe eyes, grinning cockily, “Of course! He’s gonna place first on his very first go, too.”
Regulus rolls her grey eyes, “Not to already put any pressure on him or anything.”
James rolls hers in return, smile not fading as she brushes some of Regulus’ long, wavy hair behind her shoulder, caressing her cheek with her fingertips. “Love, you know damn well I’ll support him in whatever he chooses to like spending his time doing. But to be honest, between the two of us? I’d bet a Turning he’s on a balance bike before he can even run properly.”
Regulus scowls a little, James unperturbed as she looks back at her before arching a brow.
Regulus bends down over her belly again, cupping a hand around her mouth and whispering at their little baby, “She’s right, y’know. But don’t tell her I said that.”
Her fiancé cackles, throwing her head back and Regulus sets her lips down against the belly in a gentle kiss.
There’s a little sore spot in her chest suddenly and she blows out a breath through her nose, still so close to James’ belly Regulus feels the air hit her back.
“Harry,” she starts, “I know I’m probably not a naturally good mommy. There’s still lots of what I have to learn, and unlearn, especially. But I’m doing the work, I promise. I’m reading the books, and talking to my therapist on a set schedule because I love you. You’re not even here for me to hold but I already love you so much I feel like I could pulverize a whole fleet of ships if it meant nothing bad ever happens to you.”
She kisses the bronze skin again, thumb swiping back and forth over the small spot that keeps being pushed at, “I also know that I’ll mess up eventually but that’s okay because that’s normal. And I promise you—I promise, ok?—that I’ll love you so much it’ll make up for all of it.”
Suddenly there’s a sniffle from above and Regulus head whips around alarmed to see James lips in a quivering pout, chin wrinkling and tears welling impossibly high in her bloodshot eyes.
“Baby,” Regulus makes a cooing noise, moving one hand to cup James’ jaw, “Why are you crying, what’s wrong?”
James gives a little hiccup, aggressively gasping up the snot, “That was so sweet, what the fuck.”
Regulus tucks her lips in to keep from breaking into a small laugh and nods understandingly. James’ hormones have been rollercoastering a little the past few weeks.
“And also hot,” she adds, gaze dipping to Regulus’ lips and then lower where she knows the metal of her pierced nipples is peeking through the cotton. James pulls her lower lip between her teeth, gnawing on it before shrugging slightly, distracted by the view, “Talking about raising hell for his well-being and stuff.”
“And stuff,” Regulus parrots, sliding her hand around to James’ waist and licking the corner of her lips, knowing exactly what the best approach is to get James out of her headspace here now.
In the end, all it takes is Regulus leaning in closer, voice husky and telling James she’d kill for their little family without batting an eye for James to ask her to fuck her on the sofa from behind with the mirror in the hallway facing them.

The Olympic Sports I Think Nancy Drew Characters Would Play Based on Vibes
Ned: swimming. Oh man he has big swimmer energy. I will not elaborate. Daryl does too.
Kiri: rugby. In fact she was on the women’s NZ rugby team that just won gold. If you didn’t see her you weren’t watching hard enough not my problem
Jane Penvellyn (in a few years): DRESSAGE. Oh my god. All the Penvellyns are dressage. It’s a linage of dressage. That whole family is so dressage coded. Except for Alan, he did modern pentathlon.
Katie AND Jenna: they both do canoe and kayak slaloms and they are big rivals and lovers. Also Holt does sailing.
Tex: I know you think I’m going to say an equestrian sport but that’s WRONG he does shooting. Try to tell me that man has ever missed a rifle shot I dare you! (Ollie has though lol)
Mary: you may think I’m going to say an equestrian sport and you are RIGHT. She does cross country with her horsie :)
Isis: she is a wolf so unfortunately she can’t compete. But long jump.
Connie: Judo duh
Pua: surfing duh
Hulk: he’s actually not in the Olympics. They have rules against steroids sorry Hulk
Rick Arlen: he’s not in the Olympics either but he bought beach volleyball tickets and the cameras keep cutting to him in the stands before going to commercial
Jacques: he’s not in this Olympics. Check back in two years
Yanni: him too. You know if I had a nickel for each time a Nancy Drew game had an asshole Olympic skier as a character…
Jim Archer: fencing. He wins gold. I know you think I’m joking but look up the president of the IOC who won gold in fencing like fifty years ago and you will see that they are the same man.
Frank: mountain biking. He just gives me that vibe and this is based on vibes so there you go.
George: heptathlon!! She’s ripped and also good at cardio!
Henrik: he was a pole vaulter in the 60s. Look at how tall and skinny he is. If this was real life they’d be calling it the Van der Hune flop not the Fosbury flop.
Harlan: wrestling. Search your heart, you know it to be true!
Minette: she switched martial arts to Judo but she loses her first match and gets kicked out of the tournament because she announces every move she’s about to do.
Niko Jovic: unfortunately he is dead so he’s not gonna be participating.
Brenda Carlton: rhythmic gymnastics. The US does not perform well in that sport and she’s going to do nothing to change it.
Helena: triathlon. Imagine it. She can swim and bike and run, I’m sure of it.
Niobe: did you know that up until the 1940s they had art categories in the Olympics? Unfortunately that was like 80 years ago so sorry Niobe it isn’t happening for you.
Elka: she seems short. Gymnastics. She’s not coming anywhere near team USA though.
Anja: oh my god shot put. The lady is made to be a shot putter.
Leela: actually she’s not going to the Olympics because she spends all her time playing air hockey instead of training. Bummer. Kim and Rachel are synchro divers though.
