Transparent paper-based material can hold boiling water and degrade in deep ocean in under a year
A team of biomaterial engineers, environmental resource specialists and industrial design researchers affiliated with a host of institutions across Japan has developed a biodegradable material that is clear and can hold boiling water—and it degrades in less than a year after settling on the ocean floor. Their work is published in the journal Science Advances. Prior research has shown that millions of tons of plastics are piling up in the environment, including on the ocean floor. Because of this, scientists have been looking for better, biodegradable replacements. In this new effort, the research team has developed a paper-based, clear, biodegradable material that can stand up to liquids for several hours, even those that have been heated, allowing them to replace plastic cups, straws, and other everyday objects.

James Hickey, a transition-year student at Dungarvan CBS in Waterford, Ireland, is developing a groundbreaking approach to food safety through his project, 'Spoiler Alert: pH-Responsive Packaging for Food Preservation'. His initiative, leverages the chemistry of natural substances to create a biodegradable food packaging film. This film incorporates red cabbage extract as a pH indicator to visually signal food spoilage.
The project draws inspiration from James' affinity for chemistry and his family's background in pharmaceuticals and farming. By integrating red cabbage extract and chitosan—a sugar derived from shellfish—James aims to produce a pH-sensitive film that changes color in response to spoilage, potentially offering a more accurate alternative to traditional expiry dates for assessing food safety.

Tests showed that the new plastic would start to break down within hours when placed in salt water.
And, when put into soil, the sheets of the new plastic degraded in 10 days and supplied a chemical similar to fertiliser, which helps keep soil healthy.

what if I attempted to make a binder out of a 1920's corselet pattern
#I fucking hate commercial binders so goddamn much#50$-60$ to be sweaty and uncomfortable- not even get sufficiently flat bc anything above the smallest sizes gets only half effectiveness#IF THAT#not to mention them stretching out in like 2 years max#idc if you're supposed to get new ones every couple years I SHOULDNT HAVE TO!!! THOSE BITCHES ARE NOT MADE OF BIODEGRADABLE FABRICS EITHER#I already made a better one out of an etsy pattern that was more general corset inspired#AND IT DOES WORK BETTER..#i just dont quite have access to some of the better materials it needed so i wound up with the boning that stabs you#very willing to try again/fix this one in the future if i can get ahold of metal boning at some point but yeah#the flapperesque ones though..#like. it could work..#flattening was LITERALLY the point.. AND it isnt restricted to the bust you can also compress hips which is HUGE for me personally#AND since it's a relatively more recent style the materials are actually something I can find over here 😭#unfortunately there is some required elastic but I'm willing to wear that bitch until it's rags or I get top surgery whatever comes first#then probably still wear it some more for the hip reason#yeah fuck it whatever I convinced myself

there needs to be more biodegradable glitter out there….. we have the technology!!!!! save our planet!!!!!
#sometimes when i’m washing makeup down the drain and it has glitter i get paranoid#like ‘oh god i’m polluting shit shit shit’#besides seaweed and similar materials used for biodegradable glitter are probably safer to have on your face tbh#anyway that and the lack of celebrations means i don’t wear glittery makeup as often anymore#and because it’s just a hassle i guess#i’m more of a bare-faced babe these days#my skin thanks me for it

Plants over plastics: Researchers create biodegradable cellulose-based packaging
Researchers at Virginia Tech have found a way to make biodegradable packaging stronger while using less energy in the process. The research team from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the College of Natural Resources and Environment developed a low-pressure treatment that improves plant-based packaging materials. This discovery could help companies move away from plastic without sacrificing strength or durability. "Petroleum-based plastics have long been the mainstay of packaging applications," said Haibo Huang, associate professor in the Department of Food Science and Technology. "However, their persistence in the environment has led to increased concerns about 'white pollution.' Biodegradable packaging materials are gaining interest as alternatives, but they often struggle to match the performance properties of petroleum-based plastic."

A research team headed by Prof. Karl Leo at TUD Dresden University of Technology have developed an innovative, nature-inspired solution that could revolutionize the electronics industry: "Leaftronics." This innovative approach leverages the natural structure of leaves to create biodegradable electronic substrates with enhanced properties and offers a sustainable, efficient, and scalable solution to the global-waste problem. These findings have now been published in the journal Science Advances.Electronic devices, from toys to smartphones, consist of circuits. Specific substrates are used to manufacture these circuits. In commercial electronics, these are printed circuit boards (PCBs) made of glass fiber-reinforced epoxy resin. Most of these materials are not recyclable, let alone biodegradable. Given the sheer volume of electronic waste of more than 60 million tons per year (of which over 75% is not collected worldwide), there is an urgent need for sustainable alternatives.Previous research has focused on creating biodegradable natural polymers as materials, but these have faced problems with heat stability and resistance to chemicals. The inherent conflict between biodegradability, which requires loosely bound molecules and thermal or chemical stability, which demands tightly bound molecules, has long posed a significant challenge. Now, a team of researchers at the Institute for Applied Physics at TUD Dresden University of Technology, led by Professor Karl Leo, has taken a major step forward by developing "Leaftronics"—an approach that leverages the natural structure of leaves to create biodegradable electronic substrates with enhanced properties. Their findings offer a sustainable, efficient, and scalable solution to the global e-waste problem.

The Wheat Straw Small Square Plate: Wheat Straw Small Square Plate with Compartments is designed for individuals and families looking for practical, eco-friendly, and durable dishware. Made from sustainable wheat straw plastic, these plates combine functionality with environmental consciousness. Their divided design is ideal for serving meals with different portions, making them perfect for both adults and children. Whether used at home, outdoors, or on the go, these plates offer a convenient and stylish solution for modern dining.
Eco-Friendly Material: One of the standout features of Wheat Straw Small Square Plates is the material from which they are made. The wheat straw plastic used in their production is derived from natural and renewable wheat straw fibers. This makes the plates biodegradable and compostable at the end of their life cycle, offering an eco-friendly alternative to traditional plastic tableware. By choosing wheat straw plastic over conventional plastic, users are contributing to a more sustainable future, reducing the environmental impact of their daily habits.
Lightweight and Durable: Wheat Straw Small Square Plates are incredibly lightweight, making them easy to handle for both kids and adults. Despite their lightweight nature, they are highly durable and designed to withstand the rigors of daily use. Whether used indoors for family meals or outdoors for picnics and barbecues, the plates offer excellent strength, resisting cracking, breaking, or warping over time. The combination of being light yet sturdy makes them versatile and suitable for various occasions, including school lunches, camping trips, and more.
Divided Compartments for Organized Meals: The plates feature multiple compartments, making them particularly useful for serving meals that require the separation of different food items. This is especially handy for portion control or for meals with sauces and side dishes that need to be kept apart. The compartments allow for a neat and organized presentation, ensuring that flavors do not mix, which is ideal for picky eaters, children, or anyone who prefers their food neatly separated. The divided sections make the plates a practical choice for balanced meals, encouraging healthier eating habits by allowing clear portioning of proteins, vegetables, and grains.
