Thinking about how the beasts would deal with a mortal partner's mortality catching up to them. Here's some quick thoughts on that.

Content Warning: death (via old age or sickness) and murder (because these guys do not handle it well.)

Shadow Milk seems like the one who deals with the idea of his partner's mortality the best, up until his partner is on death's door- if its sickness, he'll stop at nothing to find a way to cure it. If its age, though...

I think he'd try to find a way to make his partner immortal, too. But when that fails, I think he'd immortalize them as a puppet. Its not the real them, no, but its them from before age started to take them from him. Its them in whatever the 'best' period of their life was.

After they pass he uses it to cope but he has to control the simulacrum's actions so it actually just makes him feel worse because its obviously not them. It looks like what they looked like at one point, it acts how he remembers them acting, but how he remembers them isn't the same as how they actually were. But he doesn't stop because he'd rather try to convince himself of the lie they're still around than live with the truth that they're gone.

The illusion/puppet he makes progressively becomes less and less convincing as his memories are altered and exaggerated with time and repetition. In their absence, Shadow Milk starts to glorify them in his memory, completely disregarding any of their flaws or negative aspects that made them an actual full person; Which then makes the puppet act progressively less and less how they actually did.

Eventually probably disregards the simulacrum as its no longer even slightly convincing. But sometimes, when he thinks about them again and his heart starts aching, he conjures it up again to try to live the lie that they're still here again, just for a little bit longer. It always falls apart again, but there's brief moments where he can almost convince himself, so he keeps doing it.

Burning Spice is. Complicated! Would also want to make his partner immortal probably, but if that's proven to be impossible... I think he 'mercy' kills them, before age can affect them too much. When their hands start shaking, their memory begins to slip, their body slowly turning to dust beneath them, so slow they can hardly tell its happening- but Burning Spice has seen time claim a hundred thousand lives before, and can see it happening to them all too clearly.

Burning Spice doesn't want to let time take his partner from him, so he does it himself. Having control over their demise makes him feel better about it, if only slightly. Doesn't let them know its going to happen, because he wants their last memory of him to be pleasant. Just embraces them- and then promptly snaps their neck. Quick. Painless. Over before they could ever even know it happened.

He does view it as an actual mercy in a way, but its mostly a matter of him needing to feel like he was in control of when and how they died as opposed to them being taken from him. Change and destruction is his domain, he does not like it when those things are happening beyond his control, so he takes control of the situation himself.

Burning Spice is also quick to redirect any other emotion into anger because that's easier to manage, so the stages of grief he goes through are all just filtered directly into Anger and used as fuel to destroy more things. No one else would even be able to tell he's mourning at all, but deep down, he is, even though he doesn't want to. He's seen this happen over and over again, it shouldn't affect him anymore. He's angry at himself for letting it affect him. For letting himself grow attached to something- someone- he knew would be nothing but ash beneath his feet within a century in the first place. And yet...

Mystic Flour would perhaps put some effort in looking into how to make her partner immortal, just so that they could see everything else be reduced to flour with her before they both also were reduced to nothing. But she's not too torn up about it if unable to.

She starts to treat her aging partner as if they were already dead at a certain point, which certainly doesn't feel great for them. Comforting them about their inevitable and rapidly approaching fate is not a very nice thing to hear when they are currently still alive, probably have at least a few years of life left in them, and would probably like to enjoy those last few years rather than just think about their approaching death the whole time.

If their old age comes with any particularly high amounts of pain or memory loss, she's likely to speed up the process as a 'mercy'; Inflicting them with the Pale Ailment, which kills them within the day.

The whole day she holds and comforts them until they are reduced to flour, telling them soon they will feel nothing- no joy, yes, but also no pain. That there's nothing to fear. She sits there for a little longer after they're gone, still speaking comfort. Then she gets up and leaves; She feels nothing about it. Nothing at all.

Yet... a part of her, buried deep under layers of apathy, does wish they had lasted longer. Been at her side to see the rest of the world be reduced to flour first. Oh well.

Also, while I can't give proper thoughts until she's released, I think Eternal Sugar would probably Sleeping-Beauty her partner. Lock them in an eternal rest where they're basically dead, but their body does not age or rot further, and they're technically still breathing, so its like they're still there with her! (<- Coping extremely hard.)

Where the Wild Things Are, morals for kids, and queer art

One of my favorite things about this children's book is that the way adults respond to it is a great litmus test for how much they get kids.

At it's core, Where the Wild Things Are is a book about a tantrum. Max misbehaves, is sent to his room without supper, imagines a world where he gets to be in charge and let all his monstrous rage out, but when he's had his fun? "Max the king of all wild things was lonely and wanted to be where someone loved him best of all" he says goodbye to the beasts and makes his way back home where "he found his supper waiting for him. And it was still hot." It's still hot. The book describes his journey into and out of Where The Wild Things Are as taking "years, weeks, days" that he can smell his supper "far away across the world" but that's because everything feels so big when you're a kid. Your tantrums feel like they last an eternity but by the time you're back from it, your supper is still hot.

Deep down, Max understands that his mom sent him to bed without supper because she cares about him. Because when he's out having a wild rumpus with the beasts that follow his every command, he still sends them to bed without supper. Max might not understand why, but he sure does repeat that action to the beasts he watches over as king. Supper is still waiting for Max when he returns because his mom understands that even though Max misbehaves, it's not coming from a place of malice. It's a tantrum, and kids come back from that. They don't mean the cruel things they say or do.

So when I see grown ups read this book and go "what the heck?' This book is about a spoiled jerk who gets to boss monsters around and come back home to a nice meal? Where's his punishment??? He didn't learn a thing! What's the lesson?" I'm just amused. "he threatens his mom and she lets that slide??" Dude, the mom calls him a "WILD THING!" and he responds "I'LL EAT YOU UP" a child can't threaten you. "what if this book influences my child to act out, thinking they'll be rewarded??" Kids are going to act out no matter how you raise them.

This book has stayed with me because it's pretty to look at, it scared me, understood me and as I grew older I learned that the author, Maurice Sendak was queer. Sendak was also the son of Polish-Jewish immigrants escaping the Holocaust. He never told his parents he wasn't straight. "All I wanted was to be straight so my parents could be happy. They never, never, never knew." Adults constantly demand moral closure from kids' media. To them, kids have to be taught and disciplined and influenced into the right behaviors. But Where the Wild Things Are isn't that kind of book. This book gave me a space to let out my messy, ugly, tantrum feelings without being judged or punished for it. I didn't have to learn a lesson. I got to go to Where the Wild Things Are and come back when I'm ready.

I'm a children's book author now, and there's something so special about being able to connect to another queer creator through their work like this. My book also talks about how important it is to have the space to just feel and make sense of change. A lot of queer art is inherently challenging. To know that even the stuff we craft to nurture kids can still confound and challenge their parents? "What if this book influences our kids??" some things about queer art never change.

-KitKat and the challenge of sparing

1.Can't find anyone to spar with. (Who would spar with him, like the worry of accidentally sending him to the medbay would be high)

2. Too tired to actually want to, why spar when your could nap or just watch the show? (Will just hangout and watch, acting like its a boxing match)

3. Would definitely go all out when actually given the chance. Would he win against the person probably not, but hey he held out well (Someone gave him a gold star once, he does have it in a scrapbook)

-Graves stealing a bunch of soldiers from other companies, other bosses being annoyed and such. Neo, throwing Kitkat to Graves and just leaving. (Shadow company is just the daycare for KitKat in Neos mind)

-Most shadows assume KitKat doesn't have contact/dead or not good parents, because who lets a kid join? (KitKat absolute if given the chance will ramble about his dad, in the most possessive manner)

-Would absolutely love campaigning for Sc, selling girl scout cookies (Random thing from the discord server). Who wouldn't want to buy cookies from a kid running around pretending to play military (At least the Civvies think).

-Loves to copy other Shadows (A copycat if you will). Working out, you now have him following around and doing the sets. Eating dinner KitKat guesses he'll join. Smoking, candy cigarettes and staying farther away (will try to convince them to have a candy one insted)

-Is a absolute fiend, likes MRE's more than normal food at this point. He will trade his normal food for them (Shadows will absolutely try and trade with him for the better food, who wouldn't take up that offer). Once he's introduced to frozen food its his new favorite.

-Twix, Snickers, and Bounty. Twix, fine with it as backup for KitKats. Snickers rather give away than eat. Hates Bounty with a burning passion (Hates coconut) wouldn't even give it to someone because he sees it as rude.

-Base Halloween: Would steal as much candy as possible, would not share unless he cares about the person a lot or if he hates the type of candy. Then it's all yours :D

-KitKat Vs. Tall things: Would climb to grab items, needs a book? He's definitely scaling it. Tall shadow, would definitely ask (Demand) a piggy back.

Woke up in the middle of the night multiple times (for the 4th day in a row) and at some point started rotating Sleep Token as a paranormal investigative team. Like, their "roles" and little quirks they might have based on the experiences of teams I watch as well as my own team

Oh, I love Burning Spice! The perfect first beast request for me! These are sort of non-specific general thoughts and might be a liitle ooc but I think in general its fair to expect the beasts would act a little different regarding people they actually care about as opposed to the situations we see them in in-game.

Burning Spice Cookie x Reader [Headcanons]

Burning Spice is... interesting. He will say that he expects you to have your own strength, to protect yourself; Present a very 'survival of the fittest' mentality. Part of him even believes it.

But the moment he sees you in any actual danger which you are unequipped to handle, which he know you are not strong enough to survive, it lights up some part of him he has long tried to bury; The part of him from eons ago, that was torn apart further bit by bit as each precious civilization he helped to create crumbled inevitably to the scorching sands of time, until only the smallest shred remains. He will say it will be the last and only time he will save you. He's lying to you about that as much as he is himself- how foolish of him, to let himself grow fond of another fragile, doomed thing again.

Usually is more inclined to want a partner that is strong, but can also oddly find himself smitten with someone he perceives as weak and vulnerable; He likes being challenged as much as he likes being made to feel that he's holding all the power in any given situation, so either works for him.

Always the big spoon when cuddling. Not much of a cuddler generally because he doesn't stop and stay still for long enough to do so very often but when going to bed he'll always hold you close. And tight. Once he falls asleep you are stuck in bed until he wakes up because he has an iron grip on you.

Also on that note he generates so much heat. You will not want to be sleeping with a blanket on when sharing a bed with him you will sweat to death within minutes. Its nice when its cold out, though.

He might let you you lean on him as you walk by his side when its cold out to help warm you up. If he's in the right mood, he might even just fully carry you; He does enjoy any excuse to show off his strength, even if something like carrying you is hardly anything compared to the feats he can accomplish.

He likes you to be watching any kind of fight he partakes in. Preferably tucked away somewhere away from the actual danger if you're someone unable to fight, but he's prideful and knows no boasting words can ever match you getting to see the full extent of what he's capable of.

His antenna are pretty sensitive to touch. You can use this to mess with him but watch out because you Will get whatever you give twofold in turn; For better or worse.
