The morning had started cool and breezy, chilly enough that it made perfect sense to wear layers, but it had warmed up by midday. All over the capital, people had discarded their coats, rolled up their sleeves, and thrown their windows wide open to enjoy the weather. Everyone seemed intent on savoring the fresh spring air as much as possible.

Well, almost everyone. Wren was freezing, bundled up in the softest sweater she owned. She wanted nothing more than to curl up in bed under a heavy quilt and watch old cartoons, but staying home hadn’t been an option. She and Vul had waited almost three weeks for a private audience with Queen Zara; rescheduling would have been unthinkable even if court decorum hadn’t forbidden it. This meeting was way too important to be derailed by something as trivial as a minor head cold.

Fortunately, she hadn’t had to say much after stating her case at the beginning. Vul had been doing an admirable job representing herself, and the Queen had addressed most questions directly to her, only asking for Wren’s input when Vul couldn’t answer adequately on her own. Wren had half expected the reverse, but the Queen had instantly welcomed Vul as she would have any foreign emissary, barely missing a beat once she’d recovered from the initial shock of meeting a real live alien.

That had been a spectacle to behold: the older woman had let out a high-pitched squeal more befitting an over-excited teenager than a sixty-something monarch, eyes bugging out of her head. To her credit, Vul had barely reacted, even though Wren knew the sound must have aggravated her friend’s sensitive hearing.

Regaining her composure, the Queen had promptly apologized and enthusiastically greeted Vul, and the two had been engrossed in conversation ever since. The discussion had touched on everything from geopolitics to theoretical astrophysics, often circling back to the same concept several times to give Vul’s translation device a chance to keep up.

Wren was trying her hardest to follow along, but she’d had a pounding headache for the past hour and it was taking all her willpower to keep from slumping forward in her chair and sleeping through the rest of the afternoon. She was so focused on keeping up appearances that she didn’t fully register the meeting wrapping up until Vul swatted at her thigh with her tail to get her attention.

“…won’t take kindly to us keeping such a big secret,” the Queen was saying. “We’ll have to plan our announcements carefully, but we should move fast. I’m thinking we go public sometime next week, that leaves us enough time to make the appropriate security arrangements and agree on a script.”

“That sounds good,” Vul said.

“Excellent. Wren, what do you think? You made first contact, it’s only fair that you should stay involved.”

“Next week is perfect, your Majesty,” Wren answered.

“Alright then, that settles it. One more thing, then I’ll let you go.”

What now? Hopefully, this would be quick.

“We’ll start recording from the arboretum. You might want to prepare a speech.” The Queen winked at Wren, actually winked at her like they were co-conspirators, then rose from the ornate conference table and left the room.

Oh, wow. Wren hadn’t been expecting that, but she wasn’t about to complain. Smiling to herself, she leaned back in her chair, stretching her arms over her head with a sigh. “Ready to go?” she asked.

“Sure,” Vul chirped. Cheerful as always. “You okay? You sound different.”

Scratch that. She’d noticed, picked up on something with her inhuman hearing, and now she’d be worried and that was the last thing Wren wanted. Everything was fine, nothing worth stressing over, but Vul wasn’t used to seeing anyone in less than perfect health so she was bound to overreact the moment Wren so much as sniffled. The barrage of questions when she’d first discovered allergies had been bad enough.

“I’m just tired. Come on.”

The two of them made their way through the palace in silence, following the same narrow hallway they’d taken on the way in. After a few minutes of walking, they reached a large, heavy door protected by a biometric lock. Wren stepped up to it, leaned close enough to let it scan her eyes, then kept moving.

On the other side, a short set of steps led down into a tunnel. Running between the Queen’s chambers and a public park a block away from the palace, the rarely-used passageway allowed VIPs to come and go unseen; perfect for a secret meeting, but not the most comfortable way to travel. It was always brightly lit, fluorescent lights humming overhead no matter the time of day, and it always smelled like disinfectant.

Normally, none of this would have fazed Wren in the slightest, but this wasn’t a normal day. The sharp scent worked its way into the back of her sinuses almost immediately, throwing open the floodgates her cold had already pushed ajar. She sniffled wetly, scrubbing at her nose with her sleeve.

Vul certainly didn’t mind tunnels, as used to living underground as she was, but she still hesitated at the bottom of the stairs. “Wren?”

“I’b fide.” Ugh, that did not sound convincing. Wren cleared her throat, ready to try again, but it only made things worse. “The air id here does this sobe —SNFF!— sometimes. It’s just the smell, I pro-ohhm… prom-ihhh! HahHH-! AHHTSCHIEWWW!”

Vul stared up at her, tail lashing side to side. “Promise?”

“Yeah, that. I’m okay.” Wren hurried forward, moving as fast as she could towards the exit at the other end of the tunnel. Vul fell in step behind her, uncharacteristically quiet. No questions, no running commentary, nothing. Both girls’ footsteps echoed on the concrete floor, but otherwise their journey was almost eerily silent.

“HAHHTCHUU!”

Make that mostly silent.

Ten minutes (and another half dozen sneezes) later, Wren slid into the driver’s seat of her car. Vul climbed into the back, where tinted windows would hide her from other motorists, and Wren wasted no time turning onto the main road towards home.

She’d made the same trip many times before, and it was never a long drive, but this time it felt like an eternity. When she finally pulled into a parking space in front of her building, she slumped sideways, resting her cheek against the window. The cool glass felt so nice against her flushed skin, she might have stayed in that position for hours if Vul hadn’t spoken up.

“Come on, let’s go inside.” The alien sounded strange, not quite nervous but definitely tense somehow. She stuck close to Wren on the way upstairs, but wouldn’t meet her eyes, and she disappeared into her room the instant they made it into their apartment.

Hazily, Wren wondered if she’d upset her. If she had, it couldn’t be helped now. She’d check in later, but right then she was too tired for any lengthy conversation. She paused in the doorway just long enough to kick off her shoes, then stumbled to her own room for a much-needed nap.

Wren woke up around sunset, roused by the sound of what was unmistakably her blender running on its highest setting. She bolted upright, groaning softly; she’d fallen asleep in an awkward position, and her back and neck were stiff. Her headache was almost gone, though, and tight muscles would loosen up once she got moving.

After a quick detour to the bathroom to blow her nose and fix her ponytail, she entered the kitchen to find Vul emptying the blender into two glasses. The alien had made some sort of frozen drink, bright purple and slightly fizzy. She was clearly eager for feedback, thrusting one of the two glasses at Wren with a toothy almost-smile. “Here, try!”

Hesitantly, Wren took a sip of whatever it was. It was sour, almost earthy, with a sweet aftertaste. She knew her taste buds were a little off, but even under normal circumstances there was no way Vul’s concoction would taste normal. Setting the glass down next to the sink, she tried to school her face into a neutral expression. “What did you put in this?”

“Mostly Sprite and blueberries, a few cherries. Oh, and a little bit of onion. I didn’t know when you’d wake up, so I wanted to help. It’s what we do back home for anyone who can’t get their own food, mix up whatever we have so we can share.” Vul shifted nervously, tail drooping until the tip almost brushed the floor. “Was that wrong?”

“No!” Wren reassured her. “It was sweet, thank you.”

Really sweet, actually. Vul had been through so much over the past month, logically she should be the one seeking comfort, but instead she’d gone out of her way to be useful. Wren never would have asked for help, hadn’t even wanted to admit she wasn’t feeling well and risk stressing her friend out even more, but Vul had seen right through her.

“I really appreciate it. Honest.” What did I do to deserve a friend like her?

“But you don’t want it.” Vul spoke quietly. Her voice was dull, weighed down by the same strange tension as earlier that day, and she held herself rigidly.

“That’s not your fault.” Wren bit back a laugh. “You had no way to know, but just for future reference, onions don’t go in smoothies.”

“Oh! Sorry, is it that bad?”

Wren shrugged, hoping to soften the blow. “How’s about I order takeout, and sometime soon I’ll teach you some better recipes?”

“Okay!” Now Vul was the one laughing, bright and warm. The sound tugged at some deep part of Wren, urging her to join in the fun.

Soon, both girls lay sprawled across the kitchen floor, wiping away tears of mirth while Wren tried to compose herself enough to read a menu.

“How does soup —EHHTCHOO! EHTSCHUU! TCHUU!— Ugh, sorry. How does soup sound?”

“I don’t know,” Vul hedged. “Does it have onions?”

Wren started up again, practically cackling. Her breath scraped against her sore throat, but right then, she didn’t care. “Onions are supposed to go in soup,” she wheezed between giggles. “Soup. Soup isn’t a smoothie.”

“Noted. What about the other things, though? Like blueberries, do blueberries go in soup?”

“No! Definitely not. Blueberry smoothies are good, blueberry soup is just weird.”

Vul rolled onto her side and stretched towards Wren, poking her in the arm playfully. “I don’t know what goes together. We don’t have any of this stuff at home.”

“That’s why I’m going to show you. HAHHTCHU! Hehh… hehh-hehh-ehhtchiew! Hhehtcheeeww!” Wren paused, waiting for her body to make up its mind. When no more tickles materialized, she swiped her wrist under her nose before continuing. “After I get over this cold.”

What if "Raya and the Last Dragon" was a musical? (Concept)

Lemme explain: I REALLY wanted Raya to be a musical. Whenever Disney musicals take place in specific cultures, it sounds GORGEOUS. I mean, just look at the score that James Newton Howard did! Not sure who would do the lyrics, though Stephen Schwartz is the obvious answer. Of course, this wouldn't fix certain story issues I have with it, but I already made a post about that. Something important to note: in my rewrite for the film, the story takes place in a multicultural city in Heart rather than being a travel story, since the original film was a travel story, and my idea about each land representing a specific SEA country would be undermined if we were only in each spot for 10-15 minutes. Tell me what you think about it:

"The Druun"--It'd be a good prologue song in my opinion, and would set the serious and dire tone about unity and the fractured nature of Kumandra. It'd be a short song, but still something eye-catching. It'd be neat if it took inspiration from Indonesian music, given the shadow puppets the original film uses in the prologue.

"Dewdrop"--I love the idea that this is the song that Chief Benja sings to Raya as she grows up in order to convince her to unite the tribes. It'd show how Heart used Sisu's gem in order to focus on making their land a safe haven for those from other parts of Kumandra who want to live peacefully without the threat of warfare. The title would not only reference Benja's nickname for Raya, but also stating that she will be the drop of rain that precipitates the storm of change (plus the dragon's are pretty tied to rain, so it'd be a nifty reference). The song would take mostly from Vietnamese music, given that in my rewrite, Heart is inspired by Vietnam.

"Dep La"--I'm kind of confused on the meaning of this phrase between Namaari and Raya, but let's assume it's a term of endearment for now (and if that doesn't work, the phrase could always be changed since they're kids at this point). They'd meet each other a little bit earlier just so we'd get a montage of a couple years as they become close friends and bond over their hope for unity. I kind of imagine this being a long song, with it being cut off in the middle when Raya shows Namaari where Sisu's gem is. When Namaari reveals her true nature, she sings a darker version of the song, which I suppose could also count as a reprise. It'd start out being largely based on Vietnamese music before blending other cultures to represent unity. In my rewrite, Fang is from a predominantly Indonesian-inspired land with Bruneian and Malaysian influences, so maybe the latter two inspirations could make up the predominant sound since Indonesia was the inspiration for the opening track.

"Trust Me (The Last Dragon)"--Following the time skip, Raya is venturing outside of Heart in order to find Sisu in Tail, though she hides this by stating she wants to invite the chief to a feast in Heart where all the other chiefs (and their gem pieces) will be to discuss the matter of the Druun. This is true in any case (though the other nations received impersonal invitations), allowing Raya to find Sisu, who tells her that she isn't as great as her siblings, telling her the story of how the gem was created. In the end, she still agrees to help Raya, being more wise and less humorous in this version. Given Awkwafina being a rapper, I'd probably take inspiration from rap music, specifically Filipino rap since Tail (in my version) is inspired by the Philippines. In the end, Sisu is able to become a human with the gem piece Raya gives her, and they return to Heart with Boun's help in return for granting him asylum.

"Careful Who You Trust"--Upon returning, Raya has to attend to her chiefly duties to prepare for the banquet and Boun teaches Sisu about credit. While making friends at first in one of Heart's ports on the outskirts of the chiefdom where people from Talon have showed up, she quickly finds that she cannot pay for the items she "bought," resulting in further acrimony towards Heart and its citizens, with the Talon citizens claiming Heart is known for pretending to be kind, only to stab you in the back later. While saved by Dang Hu at first, Sisu is hesitant to share her true identity, to which the chieftess replied she should've thought harder about trusting her earlier, as Sisu is almost attacked by the druun before Raya, Noi and her monkeys, and Boun save her. Given Talon is inspired by Thailand (with Cambodian and Laotian influences), it'd be neat if the song is shown in a way similar to a Lakhol Khan performance.

"Aimless"--After Raya and the gang run into the chief of Spine and his bodyguard Tong (who is much more cynical and broken in this version), Tong is tasked with torturing Raya into giving them her gem piece, and Sisu sees into Tong's heart and saw how much he's lost in the war. Raya realizes that she's not the only person to have suffered greatly in the last few years, and Sisu promises him that their cause is just, showing her true form. Tong relents, managing to get the chief's gem piece and giving it to Sisu. As she flies, some citizens see her and take it as a good omen--unfortunately, some of those loyal to the individual lands take this as a sign that they are doing the right thing for their people. The song is very solemn and contemplative with a healing tone in the end, taking inspiration from Burmese music.

"Dep La (Reprise)"--Following a heart-to-heart between Namaari and her mother, Namaari is torn on how to proceed with stealing Raya's gem piece, regretting the destruction she caused, but also noting how the gem piece that she took allowed the cunning Fang empire to become futuristic, resulting in their more developed culture exhibited modern technology and fashion. Sisu appeals to Namaari and Raya to trust her with her destiny, though Raya confronts Namaari for the betrayal. Namaari deflects, not ready to take the blame for destroying the world, and thus not apologizing for ruining her friendship with Raya. They battle, and Sisu gets caught in the crossfire. Musically, it's very similar to the original "Dep La" song, but more gritty. I really wanted to do a villain Namari song (as I mentioned in my other post that corrupted Namaari would be so cool), but I ended up keeping the Druun as the main villain. Maybe I'll do an alternate plot (and songs) at some point.

"Kumandra"--A song spread out between the petrification of Raya and the others and the end of the film, as Namaari apologizes for hurting Raya and Raya apologizes for not realizing how much she was focused on her own pain and getting revenge. As the other citizens turn back to normal, they join for the communal feast, as Raya's father is the last to become human again. Musically, it'd be a blend of different sounds from all over SEA, perhaps ending with a shadow puppet play similar to how it began.

Lemme know your thoughts! This is just me spitballing ideas, and I'm by now way an expert on SEA culture. Though this does make me want to create tracklists for other Disney non-musicals.

Especially these scenes are resumed me the most! Something I noticed while watching RATLD is that while most of the beings the Druun turned to stone ended up in this pose:

A lot of them, especially the dragons, were left in the poses they were in before being petrified:

I wonder what the significance of this pose is, and why some beings are exempted from it. It has baffled me since I noticed this. My theories have ranged from level of trust/hope (Debunked by Sisu's siblings as they three of them were left in the positions they were in pre-petrification, and if they didn't trust their sister that much then the Dragon Gem would not have worked/not have been as effective according to what Sisu explained) to simply being a way to decipher major characters from one another (Again, debunked because I think our main cast of characters are pretty dang important and they didn't get petrified into the cupped hand position).

So if anyone has any idea as to how answer my questions or if you have theories of your own to share, please tag me! I am genuinely curious as to why this is and whether it is of some significance or just me looking too deep into things ^^;

What if when they were turned to stone and brought back, it caused them to lose their memories?!

Imagine not everyone in the RATLD crew was turned to stone. What if only Raya and Namaari had escaped being turned to stone? How would they handle the world that returns? How would Raya handle the pain of looking into her Father’s eyes and realizing he doesn’t even know who she is or who he is.

OR- what if it was only Namaari who hadn’t been turned to stone out of most of the land, then was dealt with the choice of being honest with Raya about EVERYTHING or taking the opportunity to flip the script and keep her innocence in all of this?

Bonus- yet terrifying idea- Namaari keeps the truth from her about how Sisu’s gem broke, wanting peace for her sins. She skips the details about Fang’s part in it- weaving a tale about how it was everyone’s collective fault- and how they had become friends despite the hostility between the various lands. Basically the betrayal and the last six years erased the more people she’s told- until it’s just a bad thought in the back of her head.

Still- It’s her biggest lie and she feels guilt by it. only in time does she accept that she’s made her choice and it was too late to turn back.

Raya and her are married, the nations all aligned and good- Kumandra is formed and better than ever. Everyone is happy

Then, just like that, everyone remembers the real story- everyone’s memories returning all at once.

What’s the Color of Water in Kumandra?

In Tail, the water of the Dragon River is brown or shades of yellow to green.

In Talon, the water reflects the lantern lights of their night market in purple shades.

In Spine, the water is dark teal.

In Heart, the water is shades of blue and turquoise.

In Fang, the water is blue-black, fed by white waterfalls.

So the colors that represent the five lands of Kumandra are the colors of the water that flows through the Dragon River as it makes its way through each land.

Just as the lands are named after the parts of the dragon, their distinct colors are not really things that divide them. They’re colors that all belong to one body of water that links together the people of Kumandra.

Inspired by the Mekong, the beloved "mother river" of Southeast Asia, Kumandra's Dragon River is a crucial feature of its topography and the setting for much of Raya's journey. "The Dragon River runs from Fang through Heart, Spine, and Talon and ends in Tail," details environment look supervisor Benjamin Min Huang. "To communicate where Raya is on her journey, we developed different hues for different sections of the river. The waters near Fang are fed by waterfalls. They're fresh, blue, and clear. For more stagnant water, like those around Heart, we added a green hue to represent algae. Shallow water, like in the desert of Tail where the lands are dried up, is brown and muddy." Not me wanting to write a multi-chapter re-write fic of Raya and the Lasy Dragon that is essentially mostly the same thing but everything from the different "tribes" and character dynamics are more detailed. Oooh but also dragon re-designs. Also making Kumandra into a bunch of islands instead of just whatever tf that map showed because SEAsians is comprised mostly of islands and shoreline countries are you fucking with me. I also want to write about the missing six years, the different people Raya probably met, develop her character a bit more, delve more into Kumandra, its lore, and the different “tribes” and what’s happening there, and even the backstories of all the other characters and what they were doing while raya was on this 6 year mission. Oooh, and expanding the ending after the dragons would be cool.

I also wanna take a look and see if i can make heart, fang, spine, tail, and talon, more coded to just a couple of south east asian countries (e.g heart would be more laos and thailand-coded, while the other four represent different seasian countries as well) ranther than just having them all be vaguely south east asian but there’s like 11 SEAsian countries and even choosing which ones to combine together to keep the five main tribes is problematic in of itself because SEAsian countries and cultures are so different, and separating them like that has Kumandra fall apart because it’s all just SEAsian without any discenibility to different SEAsian cultures. Also, I’m Filipino, so my bias towards my home country will be something I have to be aware of and keep in mind, just in general, but especially for this take.

But anyway, these are just my thoughts. No hate to this movie, I just think it could be better if it was more detailed and had more time to develop outside of the standard 2 hours.
