They just don’t make shows like The Middle anymore

Brick Heck from The Middle is (kind of?) canonically autistic!

While the word autism, autistic, or even asperger’s is never outright used to describe him, he displays many symptoms that are referred to as his “quirks,” “issues,” and “tics.”

In one episode where him and his equally “quirky” girlfriend Cindy say “I love you” for the first time, him and Cindy discuss their “diagnosis” at the end of the episode, without naming anything specific.

His special interest is fonts and reading! He always has his nose in a book and is part of a club at school about fonts. In one episode he even starts a podcast about fonts, before quickly abandoning it.

Additionally, he canonically attends a “social skills group” full of other presumably neurodivergent kids.

In another episode it’s mentioned that he has “sensory issues” when the family goes to the movie theater so they can’t go anymore.

Most famously, he has a form of echolalia where he whispers to himself after speaking certain sentences, sometimes one or more of the words he or another person has just said, and sometimes giving additional information (such as his “tell” when he lies, which is whispering “I’m lying” to himself right afterwards, or “I’m bluffing” when he plays poker). He is shown doing this in probably every episode. This “tic” is shown to go away when he has a high fever or a sugar rush.

Brick is also a very quiet and to-the-point kid. He rarely speaks in earlier episodes when he is probably around 7 years old, and when he does it’s simple sentences that are blunt and sometimes overly-honest.

What is love?

Shakespeare tells us that 'love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind.' I'm only 10 and have yet to experience great love, so I chose to write about the only love I'm familiar with, the love my parents share.

It's not a new love filled with burning passion. My sister says they don't even French kiss anymore. But it's the little things I see them do for each other that tells me what love is, like in the car, when my mom puts her hand on the back of my dad's neck and massages it... Or when my dad warms up my mom's car and scrapes the ice off her windshield on cold mornings... And how they've learned to communicate with each other, using their own special language.

It's true we don't have a lot of money, but I like to think, even if we did, my parents would still be at home, hanging out together - of course in a much nicer house with a jacuzzi soaking tub. - If you ask people what they think are the greatest loves stories, they'll say Romeo and Juliet, or Hermione and Ron Weasley, and those are fine, but if you ask me, great love stories can be small, like my mom and dad's.

i bet they could get him into jules verne tho but he would probably hate any of the romantics

if chase was into reading books, they would not be romance. they'd either be biographies, stem related subjects, or as anon brought up, manuals.

kinda off topic but also not really, he'd be like brick heck in the sense that he'd read maximum occupancy signs and start counting everyone in the room

The Middle season 8 would be much better without all the romance. It's gotten absurd. Can no one be single for more than one episode? As the seasons progressed, the show became less about Frankie and more about Sue and Axl; which was good, in a way, since they're both arguably more likable than Frankie, their relationship is adorable, and unlike Frankie, Mike, and Brick, they've had some positive character development (Frankie and Mike regressed). However, relatable nerd Sue stopped being relatable around 4 seasons ago when the girl who never made anything became the girl everything magically happened to. And although Axl hasn't truly changed in many ways, he's become more sensitive and level-headed, and, sadly, less interesting. I think Frankie's the most charismatic character on the show, but she, along with Sue, have become too much. Sue's ignorance and naivete aren't cure anymore now she's an adult, and Frankie's awful parenting and craziness are less charming and more appalling. Still, Frankie remains the most well-rounded and compelling character of The Middle, and the show should go back to being mainly about her. It's weird that the current narrative is that Brick is the neglected youngest child when, in the beginning, the show was all about Frankie's hardships raising Brick and their special bond, and, if anything, Sue was the neglected middle child. Speaking of Brick, I wish his relationship with Cindy was less "he's weird, she's weird, it's not like they're going to find someone better" and more "everyone is different, there's someone out there for all of us; if we try to understand and respect each other, we can find the good in them". Why are Brick and Cindy in love? What are Cindy's qualities? Why are they together? It's like they gave Brick Cindy to show he's grown and has become more "normal", so no one has to worry about him anymore. I wish Brick got better storylines.

Back to the romance, I'm fine with Axl and Sue not finding "the one". In fact, I never expected them to. The show used to be about Frankie and her average, white, low middle class, American family, but now it's practically become a teen drama. I'd rather watch Axl and Sue naturally stumble through relationships than have all this drama. Are they really going to make Sue and Sean date? That happened out of nowhere. And whatever happened to Darrin? He was Sean and Axl's bestie. It's not that Lexie is a bad match for Axl, but he was super in love with April and all of a sudden he stopped? It's hard to imagine anyone being "the one" after that. Just leave them alone. They don't need to find their spouses before the show ends. Mike and Frankie are all the romance the show needs and are by far the best couple. Since I didn't say anything about Mike, I liked him less and less as the seasons progressed, and, like Brick, he needed way better storylines.

Wait, there's season 9 lmao, but what I said still stands.
