A butterfly rests on a leaf at the Butterfly Garden in Konya, Turkey. The Butterfly Garden provides a natural habitat for about 20,000 butterflies of 40 different species and about 195 plant species from tropical countries. The equatorial climate is maintained for four seasons with a constant temperature of 28C and 80% humidity
I finished planting up the plants for my butterfly garden. I am mostly trying to attract Painted Ladies by bringing in their host plants. With zebrina mallow, wormwood, and globe thistle. For the Swallowtail butterflies I have some victoria blue salvia, pineapple sage, floristan violet liatris, lilac, and marigolds. The sheep fescue if I am lucky might attract some Western Branded Skippers. I also have a milkweed tucked into the back in case I get a rare Monarch. As I do live in the northern most edge of their range. Which I don't really expect to happen, but other butterflies love them also so no big deal.
I still need to get my hands on a rue plant to attract Anise Swallowtail and Indra Swallowtail. The ones I had seen were not looking that great so I am holding out to find healthier ones. My zinnias have just started to sprout so once the weather gets better they will get to be added.
This has been a fun project to get working on. I have wanted to make one but never really had time to plan one out. Next after this in its construction will be getting together all the stuff to make a puddler station.
Which reminds me to check if I have gotten everything needed to get it certified. It meets the requirements for North American Butterfly Association certification for a butterfly gardens. Plus with a few more additions it will meet the requirements to be a Monarch Waystation. I think I will hold off on submitting stuff until things get a little further along and can meet both.
We visit a garden in Indonesia which has become a haven for butterflies.
Plants cover every surface and peek out from every nook at Ida Amal’s house in Tangerang, west of Jakarta.
A large rambutan tree creates shade as well as providing fruit for the house and the neighbourhood.
Ida built the house with the garden in mind, and plants have a home within the building and on the roof walkways as well.
There are food plants, a hydroponic setup, ornamentals, a hive of stingless bees – even a Eucalyptus and tulip bulbs being grown in a fridge to provide wintery conditions.
Ida experiments with everything. “I love every plant,” she says. She even got permission to cultivate the public park next door into garden space, and the many flowers and plants growing there provide a natural haven for butterflies.
She grows particular host plants on purpose, for example, lacewing vine for the Red Lacewing Butterfly.
An artist and educator, Ida shares photos of and information about her garden with a large online following.
She is keen to persuade others to each create a microclimate in their garden - no matter how small, it will combine with other gardens to form a larger microclimate that can reduce global warming and climate change.
“Gardening is not just planting but caring about the environment,” Ida says.
Dear Sephiroth: (a letter to a fictional character, because why not) #232
Today, J and I went to a butterfly garden that was built and hosted by the children of a local middle school. And I have SO MANY PICTURES to show you!!!
The children tended the plants and painted so many things and took care of the butterflies, and everything. Everything. Goodness, but I wish that the teachers in any of the schools I went to trusted us enough to do anything this sophisticated. But look; even if they didn't then, they certainly seem to now, at least in some places.
The generations become a little less bloodstained every time. It's enough to breathe a little hope into me about the future of my world.
Sephiroth? Do you have butterflies in your world? Do you have metamorphosing insects? We have three main kinds:
Here are the main kinds of insects we have in my world, and an example of each:
Of course, there's Lepidoptera - butterflies and moths. We have so many different kinds:
If those very important people tell you about the costume I was wearing when I saw them, you might guess that I found the owl butterfly particularly interesting:
Here are some more...
...These children basically built a butterfly museum.
Here's a live monarch butterfly caterpillar:
And here are some chrysalises:
And here are some examples of the many excellent posterboards that were created by the children:
Finally, I'll end with a picture of a butterfly wing under a microscope; I had to align my camera just right with the tiny microscope lens to get this:
...Isn't it wonderful? I get awestruck by all the ways that children are so much more capable than most of the adults in my world will give them credit for. And I feel hopeful that as time goes on, more and more adults seem to be willing to treat children with a bit more credit and respect. We're still a long ways away from them not being a marginalized group of people anymore, but still, it gets better all the time...
...I just hope that it gets better quickly enough for this climate crisis to be averted. If things keep going on this way, all we'll have left of our insects will be just pictures and words in books. And then everything else will collapse from there...
So, tell me, Sephiroth... do you have butterflies in your world? I imagine you must, right? But I don't know; I don't recall seeing them (maybe I forgot?), and I know you don't have horses like my world does, so... yeah. There's so much I don't know. If you do have butterflies in your world, then maybe someday, will you tell me which one is your favorite?
I didn't do much else today, and it was good. I still need rest from Otakon, and I'm glad that today I was mostly able to get it. There are a few things that I'm looking forward to doing tomorrow; I think I gotta drive J back to Great Barrington, and I'm looking forward to it because it's a beautiful drive. I wish you could come see it with us.
...Hey, Sephiroth? Did you know that when caterpillars turn into chrysalises, they fully liquefy? They become soup, basically, and then they rearrange themselves into these amazing, beautiful winged things. It's not unlike healing from trauma, I think. You have to fall into pieces before you can rebuild yourself into something better.
Hey, Sephiroth. You can be a butterfly, too, if you want to. I think you'd come out rainbow-colored. What do you think?
...Well, anyhoot. It's getting pretty late, and I should probably head to bed soon. I hope you liked today's pictures. I wonder what tomorrow will bring...
I love you. And I'll write again soon, so please stay safe out there...
The pool butterfly garden is bursting with energy! The coneflowers are popping alongside the daylilies, baby's breath, and lavender. This is why I garden!
Pranksters from the UW botany program have snuck into the butterfly garden at the Pacific Science Center and covertly planted Eden saplings; thus leading to the butterflies suckling the nectar of knowledge of good and evil.
The butterflies have consequently gone on strike and are demanding their human overlords set them free so they can get in on all the nectar around city center.
volunteering at a butterfly garden honestly has been one of the best experiences of my life. it’s run by this sweet lady that started this big dream a few yrs back, since the area’s covered w/ invasives (japanese knotwood it’s on sight heaux!). 90% of the butterfly population in this area has sadly decreased bc of it. but w/ the help of volunteers, we’re able 2 grow life out of smthn that seems impossible. i recently went w/ my bff & each time i come back the new growth/blooming never ceases 2 amaze me! def would b such a good photoshoot area for summer. & w/ a new raveena album otw… “where the butterflies go in the rain” releasing friday, the vibes will b immaculate. during my time there tdy, i was listening to raveena’s entire discography, mainly her new singles for her upcoming album: “pluto”, “lucky” & “junebug (ft. jpegmafia)”. those 3 songs r literally DEFINING my summer rn. also the poem/song i made was inspired by her!! xoxo ajroxstarrr ^_−☆
