DWBD AU. A series of firsts during Kirana's time in the Devildom.
It's been a while since I wrote about my F!OC in this AU. Masterlist here.
The first time Lucifer called Kirana into his office, it was to lecture her on her poor grades.
"But I've never even heard about any of this beforeâ"
"That's no excuse. You are an ambassador of the human realm, a representative of the exchange program, and you will perform or else." Lucifer glared at her threateningly.
Kirana snapped her mouth shut and nodded meekly. She kept her head down until the demon finally dismissed her, and scurried away without another word.
The first time Mammon rummaged through Kirana's room, he stole her monthly allowance from under her bed.
Mammon didn't seem to understand the meaning of a locked door, so Kirana figured it was only a matter of time before her belongings fell victim to his greed. Reporting the issue to Lucifer only earned her Mammon's ire, and she knew her room was no longer safe.
Good thing she just opened a bank account to dump all her cash in. She owed Dracius a coffee the next time they worked the same shift at the royal library.
The first time Leviathan interacted with Kirana was to leave a comment on her Devilgram account.
The post was harmless enough, featuring a screenshot of her spirit collection in Mononoke Land. An event had just concluded, and Kirana was proud of her final haul despite not finishing the quests. She had grades to keep up, after all.
Seeing a notification on her D.D.D. about a new Devilgram comment, she opened the app and her face fell as she read it.

The first time Satan cooked for Kirana, he almost set her tongue on fire.
"Sorry, I must have misheard you. I thought you liked spicy foods." Satan's smirk was anything but apologetic, and Kirana immediately knew he had done this on purpose. There wasn't a single dish on the table that wasn't loaded with spices.
No amount of water quelled the burning in her mouth; in fact, it only made the sensation worse. Kirana quickly excused herself and ran out of the dining room, leaving behind a napkin dotted with splotches of red.
The first time Beelzebub gave Kirana feedback on her cooking, it wasn't constructive in the slightest.
"It's not enough," Beel repeated for what seemed like the fifth time now. Kirana wasn't even surprised anymore; she only sighed and returned to the kitchen to prepare another round of food.
None of the other brothers bothered to lift a finger to help her, and by the time Beel was finally (finally!) sated, the only things left were her empty plate and a table full of dirty dishes.
The first time Belphegor cursed Kirana with nightmares, she knew she was never going to cook for him or his brothers again.
Belphie's smirk fell when Kirana came back lugging not baskets of fresh groceries, but a pile of takeout boxes. "What's all this?"
"Dinner." She gave him a firm look, a stark contrast from her usual downcast gaze. "That's what you wanted, right?"
She would need to pick up more shifts to avoid going completely broke, but it was worth not having to cook for those ungrateful, entitled brothers anymore.
The first time Asmodeus called Kirana by her name, it wasn't actually Asmo at all.
Kirana smiled sadly and stepped out of Asmo's warm hug, leaving him inside the magic circle. It was nice while it lasted. "These are the fakes, Lord Diavolo."
Things happened quickly after that. The clones were banished, the real brothers were released from their own magic circles, and Barbatos asked how she knew.
"They called me Kirana." She shrugged and turned away from seven guilty faces. "If we're done here, I have somewhere else to be. Please excuse me."
The first time Rache danced with Kirana was in the kitchen of Purgatory Hall.
The song blaring from the speakers of Rache's D.D.D. was in a foreign language, but it definitely wasn't demonic. Rache laughed at the look of surprise on Kirana's face. "I just discovered this the other day! How come you never told me humans had such interesting music?"
Before Kirana could even reply, the demoness started dancing to the beat, no doubt having memorized the choreography already.
"Come on, dance with me!" Rache held out her hand.
The dirty dishes in the sink were left forgotten as Kirana did her best to imitate Rache's moves, giggling when they both almost slipped on the tiles. She didn't know how Rache found out about K-pop, but in that moment it was the best damn thing ever invented.
The first time Igfuur successfully cursed an object, it was a gift for Kirana.
Igfuur never really liked curses. It was no fun to be afflicted with one, and they took too much effort to cast since they required a lot of intent to make their victims suffer. Personally, Igfuur would rather just leave justice up to karma.
But this time it was personal. Igfuur had but one goal: to make his sick friend feel better and leave her with something that could not be easily stolen. Kirana was not fooling any of them with the so-called 'ghost' in her room.
Several gloves later, the stuffed flame salamander was good to go. Kirana would be able to hold it with no issue, but the toy would burn anyone else who touched it.
Take that, Lord Mamâ uh, 'ghost'!
The first time Vorgo cooked human world food was when Kirana was feeling homesick.
"I hope you don't mind, but I had to substitute a few ingredients," Vorgo explained apologetically, setting the steaming bowl of soup on the table. "The markets here don't really stock much from the human world."
"That's fine. Thank you for the meal."
"No, thank you for being my reliable taste tester!" The demon winked at her as she tried a spoonful. "So what do you think?"
"...Tastes just like chicken." Kirana's eyes were slightly watery, but there was no mistaking the warmth of gratitude in her eyes.
"That's great to hear! I actually had to useâ" Vorgo cut themself off abruptly, thinking better of it. "Never mind, let's not spoil the moment. I hope you're hungry, because this is just the appetizer!"
The first time Talon carried Kirana was after a long day at RAD.
"Get on."
Kirana paused when Talon knelt down in front of her and faced away. "Uhh, what are you doing?"
"Giving you a lift, obviously. You're practically dead on your feet."
The offer was tempting, but... "You don't have to do that! I can manageâ"
Talon rolled her eyes and smiled. "I get a workout, and you get a free ride. It's a win-win situation, so what's the problem?"
Well, when she put it that way. "Are you calling me heavy?" Kirana teased as she climbed on, sighing in relief as weight was lifted off of her aching feet.
"You're never too heavy for me, doll." The demoness stood up with ease. "Now just relax and let me do all the work, okay?"
The first time Belyth asked Kirana for help, it was for a school project.
"The course material is outdated. I ought to file a complaint." Belyth grumbled, taking her seat next to Kirana. "Good thing we're in the same class again. You're the only one I trust to provide accurate information."
"Just because I'm human doesn't mean I'm an expert on human culture. There's a lot of diversity among us, you know." Kirana pointed out. "In fact, I'd say Solomon knows way more than I do, especially given how long he's been around."
"If I want his help, I'll ask for it." That was a blatant lie and they both knew it. "It's not everyday our roles are reversed so don't get used to this."
"Whatever you say. Okay, so feet binding was a thing in ancient China..."
The first time Erkid gave Kirana flowers was when she was hospitalized.
Sprawling with white, pink and yellow lilies, the bouquet was so haphazardly arranged that Kirana suspected Erkid had put it together himself. Nevertheless, it was a sweet gesture and she thanked him as he stuffed it into an empty vase next to her bed.
"I hope you get better soon! And don't worry, we'll make sure those bullies don't get away with hurting you!" He promised. "Also I didn't find out until today but did you know different flowers came with different meanings? You can even make a bouquet that says 'fuck you'!"
The demon was rambling again. It was an endearing habit, but Kirana knew Erkid was worried and needed a distraction. "Tell me more," she said, leaning back and making herself comfortable.
The first time Dracius kissed Kirana, it was after making a pact with her.
"Are you sure about this?" Kirana looked absolutely bewildered. "I donât want to give up my soul or anything, and I don't think you should be signing away your life like that."
"You make it sound as though I wonât have any free will left." Dracius cracked a small smile. "Besides, I trust you."
"But..."
"And I don't expect anything in return," he added quietly. "I may not be as strong as Talon, or as smart as Belyth, but I promise to have your back no matter what."
One look into Dracius' eyes and Kirana knew he meant every word. It made her wonder if he still harbored guilt over not being able to protect her all those weeks ago, but it seemed like he really wanted this. "Okay, I trust you too."
Dracius took her hand and swore an oath. Something warm branded itself onto Kirana's right arm, and she knew the pact had been forged.
Before she could promise him never to abuse his power, the demon lifted her hand and pressed his lips against her knuckles in a reverent kiss. Kirana froze at the implication, but Dracius only smiled before releasing her.
(Somewhere around the corner, hidden just out of sight, Satan gritted his teeth and scowled. A bouquet of red lilies dropped to the ground as he stomped away silently.)

Love it or hate it, you have to admit Temu had a banger year. Launched in late 2022, the Chinese-owned ecommerce site, known for selling a vast array of astonishingly affordable goods, took only two years to become a household name in the US. Over the past 12 months, it has topped download charts, surpassing other viral apps like ChatGPT and Threads, and now operates in dozens of countries around the world. Even its biggest rival, Amazon, recently introduced a Temu clone called Amazon Haul that closely resembles the original, both in terms of its logistics supply chain and user interface.
Temu is projected to earn more than $50 billion in total sales this year, according to analysts from AB Bernstein and Tech Buzz China, potentially tripling its 2023 figure. Temuâs website now gets nearly 700 million visits worldwide every month, and Apple recently revealed it was the most downloaded app of 2024 on iPhones in the US.
Temu has now fully replaced Wish, an earlier bargain online shopping site, in the cultural lexicon as the signifier of knockoffs or budget-friendly alternatives. The winner of the recent TimothĂŠe Chalamet lookalike contest in New York City, for example, calls himself âTemu-thĂŠe Chalamet.â Tens of millions of ordinary people have tried out the app, many of whom learned about it through one of Temuâs seemingly unavoidable and relentless advertising campaigns. At this point, your grandma is probably obsessed with Temu, too.
âMy friends and family members who didn't know what it was in 2023 do now,â says Moira Weigel, an assistant professor at Harvard University who studies transnational online marketplaces. âRandom relatives who know that I study China or ecommerce will say, âOh, you must know all about Temu,â in a way that didnât happen a year ago.â
Weigel says that Temu has done a few things right, including identifying the correct suppliers in China, targeting appropriate customer segments, and finding an inexpensive way to ship products from one to the other. That allowed the shopping platform to defy early analyst predictions that it would quickly burn through its cash reserves and flame out.
Temu, which is owned by PDD, one of the biggest ecommerce giants in China, is moving and pivoting at a speed that its Western counterparts canât really grasp, says Juozas KaziukÄnas, founder of the ecommerce intelligence firm Marketplace Pulse. âWhen you look at a company like Temu, it's going a thousand miles an hour,â he says.
KaziukÄnas believes the most important thing Temu did this year was quickly switch its focus away from shipping small packages through air cargo and start building local inventory supply chains in the US and other countries. âThis year, it started with 100 percent of goods coming from China; now in the US, 50 percent of them are coming from local warehouses. For Western marketplaces, these types of changes would have taken years,â KaziukÄnas says.
Still, Temu does not have a shortage of looming challenges. In the US, the Biden administration is eager to dismantle a tariff exemption rule that critics say unfairly benefits Temu before it leaves the White House. In Europe, Temu is under formal investigation for allegedly selling illegal products and getting users addicted to its app. The company is also often criticized around the world for its negative environmental impact, labor practices, and alleged misuse of user data, including allegations from researchers in the US that the app poses a national security risk.
Whether Temu can overcome these hurdles will depend on how fast the company can adjust its supply chain and pivot away from the most troublesome aspects of how it operatesâbefore regulators take action. âWhat Temu was, is, and what Temu will be in the future are perhaps different things,â KaziukÄnas says.
From $1 Deals to Dupes
Temu made its name by promoting dirt-cheap deals that are often too good to believe, like $5 purses and $2 wireless headphones. It spent millions promoting the tagline âshop like a billionaireâ in a series of Super Bowl advertisements, and thatâs indeed what the app used to feel like: Identical or very similar products cost only a fraction of what they did on Amazon or Walmart, and it was hard to resist the temptation of adding a dozen more things to your shopping cart when they each were less than $1.
Temu managed to pull it off because it exploited a few areas of untapped potential, says Weigel. On the buyer side, it targeted price-conscious shoppers living in a time of high inflation. On the seller side, it scouted out Chinese factories that needed to keep their production lines running, but had no idea how to enter overseas markets. To connect them, Temu figured out it could take advantage of the so-called de minimis rule to send items affordably through air cargo directly to customersâ doorsteps. The provision allows people to send packages to the US duty-free as long as the goods inside are worth less than $800.
Because this business model is based on shipping everything from China and doesnât require much local inventory, itâs very easy to replicate in different markets. As of December 2024, Temuâs website shows that itâs available in 86 countries, while Amazon, having been in business for three decades, operates in only 22. âIn recent history, like the past 10 to 15 years, the first place people were interested in selling is the US and Europe, because they're large markets, prices can be higher, and so on,â says Weigel, who traveled to China this year to interview vendors selling on Amazon and Temu. âNow, there is increasing interest among these small-to-medium-size Chinese businesses in expanding in Africa, Southeast Asia, and also Central Asia ⌠Multiple people talk to me about how young and rapidly growing the population in Africa is.â
But that doesnât mean Temu is totally different from Amazon. In fact, the company has begun borrowing a number of tactics from the US ecommerce giant. In March, Temu reportedly started working with local warehousing companies in the US and allowing vendors on the platform to store their own US inventory instead of shipping directly from China. This is essentially what Amazon has been doing for years with its Chinese-based marketplace sellers, a strategy that allows it to deliver orders in as little as a single day. And now, these locally shipped products account for nearly half of Temuâs sales in the US, according to The Information.
What this means is that many of the products Temu sells are no longer exempt from American import duties, significantly reducing the price advantage that Temu used to have. But the strategy allows Temu to ship physically larger items to US warehouses through ocean freight before putting them up for sale, and then, the products can be delivered faster to customers, who previously often needed to wait a week or more for their packages to arrive.
That is why consumers are increasingly buying things like couches or other furniture on Temu, and also why sometimes prices on the site end up not being much lower than on Amazon or other online retailers. âI think it's pretty clear that Temu is becoming a more expensive offering,â says KaziukÄnas. âI talked to someone at Temu months ago, and they said that they're repositioning Temu from cheap to affordable.â
Higher prices can help recoup some of the financial losses that Temu incurred in its earlier days when it was primarily focused on expansion, but it could also create an identity crisis for the platform. If it doesnât have shocking $1 deals, then what does Temu really stand for? How can it compete with Amazon and Walmart when the other two are often perceived as more reliable, both in terms of shipping speed and product quality? âI think thatâs a problem for Temu already, that it doesn't really have a strong brand to consumers,â KaziukÄnas says.
Lingerings Risksâand Rewards
The days might be numbered for the de minimis exemption. The White House announced in September that it would crack down on âabuseâ of the provision, citing a sleuth of reasons ranging from intellectual property violations to fentanyl smuggling. Itâs not clear yet how exactly the regulation might changeâlawmakers may get rid of it completely or lower the price thresholdâbut a fix could be finalized before president-elect Donald Trump takes office next month.
If it happens soon, the change will no doubt make it harder for Temu to remain competitive, but itâs not going to eliminate it from the field. So much of the conversation in Washington this year has revolved around restricting de minimis to contain Temu, KaziukÄnas says, but the platform has already taken significant steps to reduce its dependence on it. Its ability to ship under de minimis and handle everything from inventory to pricing used to be the main selling points Temu used to lure Chinese suppliers, but now, itâs doing a 180 to address the risksâand the strategy seems to be working. âThe regulators are still only now trying to figure out what to do. And by the time they have figured out what they actually need to do, these retailers will be something different,â KaziukÄnas says, referring to Temu and competitors like Shein that rely on de minimis.
Of course, there are other risks that the company needs to address. What TikTok is going through right nowâthe app could be blocked in the US as soon as next monthâshould serve as a cautionary tale for Temu, as the latter is already receiving similar scrutiny from lawmakers over its Chinese ownership and data protection practices.
The possibility of being blocked in the US is real for Temu, but Weigel points out that thereâs less of a political urgency to act on an ecommerce platform than a social media one that has elicited concerns about things like artificial intelligence and disinformation. âââWhile there is a bipartisan consensus that people are concerned with the implications of China's tech rise, the incentives to police Temu are lower than TikTok,â she says. The Chinese ecommerce vendors she has spoken to donât seem very concerned either. âThese people are very nimble and flexible. My sense was that it was a thing people were curious about, but not something they were afraid about,â Weigel says.
After all, Temuâs aggressive expansion into other markets gives them plenty of alternative places to find customers if things get really ugly between the US and China. On a recent trip to Shenzhen, Weigel says she met a woman who heads a cross-border ecommerce industry association. One of the first things she told Weigel: âWe donât necessarily make the American and the European markets our top priority.â

What happened to the cycle of renewal? Where are the regular, controlled burns?
Like the California settlers who subjugated the First Nations people and declared war on good fire, the finance sector conquered the tech sector.
It started in the 1980s, the era of personal computers â and Reaganomics. A new economic and legal orthodoxy took hold, one that celebrated monopolies as âefficient,â and counseled governments to nurture and protect corporations as they grew both too big to fail, and too big to jail.
For 40 years, weâve been steadily reducing antitrust enforcement. That means a company like Google can create a single great product (a search engine) and use investorsâ cash to buy a mobile stack, a video stack, an ad stack, a server-management stack, a collaboration stack, a maps and navigation stack â all while repeatedly failing to succeed with any of its in-house products.
Itâs hard to appreciate just how many companies tech giants buy. Apple buys other companies more often than you buy groceries.
These giants buy out their rivals specifically to make sure you canât leave their walled gardens. As Mark Zuckerberg says, âIt is better to buy than to compete,â (which is why Zuckerberg bought Instagram, telling his CFO that it was imperative that they do the deal because Facebook users preferred Insta to FB, and were defecting in droves).
As these companies âmerge to monopoly,â they are able to capture their regulators, ensuring that the law doesnât interfere with their plans for literal world domination.
When a sector consists of just a handful of companies, it becomes cozy enough to agree on â and win â its lobbying priorities. Thatâs why America doesnât have a federal privacy law. Itâs why employees can be misclassified as âgig workerâ contractors and denied basic labor protections.
Itâs why companies can literally lock you out of your home â and your digital life â by terminating your access to your phone, your cloud, your apps, your thermostat, your door-locks, your family photos, and your tax records, with no appeal â not even the right to sue.
But regulatory capture isnât merely about ensuring that tech companies can do whatever they want to you. Tech companies are even more concerned with criminalizing the things you want to do to them.
Frank Wilhoit described conservativism as âexactly one propositionâ:
There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.
This is likewise the project of corporatism. Tech platforms are urgently committed to ensuring that they can do anything they want on their platforms â and theyâre even more dedicated to the proposition that you must not do anything they donât want on their platforms.
They can lock you in. You canât unlock yourself. Facebook attained network-effects growth by giving its users bots that logged into Myspace on their behalf, scraped the contents of their inboxes for the messages from the friends they left behind, and plunked them in their Facebook inboxes.
Facebook then sued a company that did the same thing to Facebook, who wanted to make it as easy for Facebook users to leave Facebook as it had been to get started there.
Apple reverse-engineered Microsoftâs crown jewels â the Office file-formats that kept users locked to its operating systems â so it could clone them and let users change OSes.
Try to do that today â say, to make a runtime so you can use your iOS apps and media on an Android device or a non-Apple desktop â and Apple will reduce you to radioactive rubble.
Big Tech has a million knobs on the back-end that they can endlessly twiddle to keep you locked in �� and, just as importantly, they have convinced governments to ban any kind of twiddling back.
This is âfelony contempt of business model.â
Governments hold back from passing and enforcing laws that limit the tech giants in the name of nurturing their âefficiency.â
But when states act to prevent new companies â or users, or co-ops, or nonprofits â from making it easier to leave the platforms, they do so in the name of protecting us.
Rather than passing a privacy law that would let them punish Meta, Apple, Google, Oracle, Microsoft and other spying companies, they ban scraping and reverse-engineering because someone might violate the privacy of the users of those platforms.
But a privacy law would control both scrapers and silos, banning tech giants from spying on their users, and banning startups and upstarts from spying on those users, too.
Rather than breaking up ad-tech, banning surveillance ads, and opening up app stores, which would make tech platforms stop stealing money from media companies through ad-fraud, price-gouging and deceptive practices, governments introduce laws requiring tech companies to share (some of) their ill-gotten profits with a few news companies.
This makes the news companies partners with the tech giants, rather than adversaries holding them to account, and makes the news into cheerleaders for massive tech profits, so long as they get their share. Rather than making it easier for the news to declare independence from Big Tech, we are fusing them forever.
We could make it easy for users to leave a tech platform where they are subject to abuse and harassment â but instead, governments pursue policies that require platforms to surveil and control their users in the name of protecting them from each other.
We could make it easy for users to leave a tech platform where their voices are algorithmically silenced, but instead we get laws requiring platforms to somehow âbalanceâ different points of view.
The platforms arenât merely combustible, theyâre always on fire. Once you trap hundreds of millions â or billions â of people inside a walled fortress, where warlords who preside over have unlimited power over their captives, and those captives the are denied any right to liberate themselves, enshittification will surely and inevitably follow.
Laws that block us seizing the means of computation and moving away from Big Tech are like the heroic measures that governments undertake to keep people safe in the smouldering wildland-urban interface.
These measures prop up the lie that we can perfect the tech companies, so they will be suited to eternal rule.
Rather than building more fire debt, we should be making it easy for people to relocate away from the danger so we can have that long-overdue, âgood fireâ to burn away the rotten giants that have blotted out the sun.
What would that look like?
Well, this weekâs news was all about Threads, Metaâs awful Twitter replacement devoted to âbrand-safe vaporposting,â where the news and controversy are not welcome, and the experience is âlike watching a Powerpoint from the Brand Research team where they tell you that Pop Tarts is crushing it on social.â
Threads may be a vacuous âTwitter alternative you would order from Brookstone,â but it commanded a lot of news, because it experienced massive growth in just hours. âTwo million signups in the first two hoursâ and â30 million signups in the first morning.â
That growth was network-effects driven. Specifically, Meta made it possible for you to automatically carry over your list of followed Instagram accounts to Threads.
Meta was able to do this because it owns both Threads and Instagram. But Meta does not own the list of people you trust and enjoy enough to follow.
Thatâs yours.
Your relationships belong to you. You should be able to bring them from one service to another.
Take Mastodon. One of the most common complaints about Mastodon is that itâs hard to know whom to follow there. But as a technical matter, itâs easy: you should just follow the people you used to follow on Twitter âeither because theyâre on Mastodon, too, or because thereâs a way to use Mastodon to read their Twitter posts.
Indeed, this is already built into Mastodon. With one click, you can export the list of everyone you follow, and everyone who follows you. Then you can switch Mastodon servers, upload that file, and automatically re-establish all those relationships.
That means that if the person who runs your server decides to shut it down, or if the server ends up being run by a maniac who hates you and delights in your torment, you donât have to petition a public prosecutor or an elected lawmaker or a regulator to make them behave better.
You can just leave.
Meta claims that Threads will someday join the âFediverseâ (the collection of apps built on top of ActivityPub, the standard that powers Mastodon).
Rather than passing laws requiring Threads to prioritize news content, or to limit the kinds of ads the platform accepts, we could order it to turn on this Fediverse gateway and operate it such that any Threads user can leave, join any other Fediverse server, and continue to see posts from the people they follow, and who will also continue to see their posts.

Rather than devoting all our energy to keep Metaâs empire of oily rags from burning, we could devote ourselves to evacuating the burn zone.
This is the thing the platforms fear the most. They know that network effects gave them explosive growth, and they know that techâs low switching costs will enable implosive contraction.
The thing is, network effects are a double-edged sword. People join a service to be with the people they care about. But when the people they care about start to leave, everyone rushes for the exits. Hereâs danah boyd, describing the last days of Myspace:
If a central node in a network disappeared and went somewhere else (like from MySpace to Facebook), that person could pull some portion of their connections with them to a new site. However, if the accounts on the site that drew emotional intensity stopped doing so, people stopped engaging as much. Watching Friendster come undone, I started to think that the fading of emotionally sticky nodes was even more problematic than the disappearance of segments of the graph. With MySpace, I was trying to identify the point where I thought the site was going to unravel. When I started seeing the disappearance of emotionally sticky nodes, I reached out to members of the MySpace team to share my concerns and they told me that their numbers looked fine. Active uniques were high, the amount of time people spent on the site was continuing to grow, and new accounts were being created at a rate faster than accounts were being closed. I shook my head; I didnât think that was enough. A few months later, the site started to unravel.
Tech bosses know the only thing protecting them from sudden platform collapse syndrome are the laws that have been passed to stave off the inevitable fire.
They know that platforms implode âslowly, then all at once.â
They know that if we werenât holding each other hostage, weâd all leave in a heartbeat.
But anything that canât go on forever will eventually stop. Suppressing good fire doesnât mean âno fires,â it means wildfires. Itâs time to declare fire debt bankruptcy. Itâs time to admit we canât make these combustible, tinder-heavy forests safe.
Itâs time to start moving people out of the danger zone.
Itâs time to let the platforms burn.
