Brain Curd #403
Brain Curds are barely-edited fiction, poetry, or just about anything else - drafted in a day or less. Babes crawl, tikes toddle, ducklings waddle, time flies.
Part 52 of an experiment in progress. Refer to case logs.
It was weird how I woke up on the sidewalk like that but it was better than that weird place I dreamed I went to. Apart from the chewed gum that was next to my face. Gross.
I got up and brushed myself off. I was feeling like I shouldn’t go to Pops and Grandma’s house by myself after all since there were all those potholes. So I turned back.
I felt a little tickle on my arm and smacked it. Whatever it was, it left a big splat on me that smelled like donuts. I don’t know why it smelled like donuts though because I think it was a bug and bugs don’t eat donuts. Daddy always said pigs eat the most donuts, but he never said anything about bugs eating donuts.
Anyway I kept walking back home and I kept feeling little tickles. I smacked another one on my arm, and on my forehead, and on my leg. And each one smelled different. One of them was like oranges. And another one smelled like boat engines which was nasty.
“Why does he keep slapping himself?” The nice lady asked a question but I didn’t see her anywhere.
“Oh no. There must be a swarm here.” The tall man’s voice answered her question, I think.
“A swarm? Of what?”
“Timeflies.”
“You’re joking, right?”
“They lay their eggs upstream aways. I was hoping they would still be maggots here, at worst…”
“Gross.”
“I do not think you comprehend the severity of this situation, Celeste. We must get him out of here or he will be devoured. One year or so should be enough.”
“How am I supposed to just… skip forward a year? Huh?” She was panicking. “I never meant to go back this far in the first place!”
“You are the one at the controls. I cannot answer these questions.”
There were more and more of the bugs landing on me. I ran as fast as I could towards home but it was like a cloud of them were in my way. They got smushed on me like on a windshield I was going so fast. And each one that died let out another smell, and the smells were reminding me of things that I couldn’t remember. There was stinky feet. There was perfume, and cookies, and blood, and it was all so much and I was so scared so I kept running. My skin was starting to swell up and get stiff and gray.
“Celeste…” the tall man sounded disappointed. “You do know the basic operations of your machine, do you not?”
“Stop putting so much pressure on me! It’ll only take another second!”
I couldn’t breathe. I think the bugs were in my lungs. I coughed but they wouldn’t come out. I was like fish food. But for bugs. And they were gobbling me up and then I was in my bedroom.
But it wasn’t my bedroom. It was a different bedroom. Smaller. Darker. The carpet was the wrong color. Boring brown. I hated it.

National food tag game 
I decided to create a tag game. 
Rules: Say which country you’re from. Make a list of foods from your country that you think everyone should try. Write a description of each food. Tag as many people as you like. 
I’m from Canada. Here’s my list of foods from my country that I think everyone should try. The pictures are not mine. I found them on Google. All credit goes to the rightful owners. 
Poutine

Poutine is a dish consisting of French fries, gravy, and cheese curds. It emerged in the Canadian province of Québec in the late 1950’s, though its exact origins are uncertain and there are several competing claims regarding its invention. 
Donair

The donair originated in Halifax (the capital city of Nova Scotia, the Canadian province I’m from) in the early 1970’s. Donair meat is made from spiced ground beef sliced off a rotating cone. The toppings typically include chopped onions and tomatoes, while the distinctive sweet sauce is made from condensed milk, sugar, vinegar, and garlic powder (optional). All of these ingredients are wrapped together in a soft white pita.
Garlic fingers

Garlic fingers are an Atlantic Canadian dish, similar to a pizza in shape and size and made with the same type of dough. Instead of being cut in triangular slices, they are presented in thin strips, or "fingers". They are often accompanied by pizza and dipped in donair sauce. 
Lobster roll

The lobster roll is a dish native to New England and Atlantic Canada. It can be served hot or cold. It is typically made with lobster knuckle, claw, and tail meat. The meat is served on a grilled hot dog bun. The filling may contain butter, lemon juice, salt, and pepper, with some versions replacing the butter with mayonnaise. Other versions may contain diced celery or scallions. Coleslaw and French fries are the typical side dishes.
Hodge Podge

Hodge Podge is a stew consisting of milk, cream, butter, and green and root vegetables. It’s essentially a vegetarian chowder, but it occasionally has meat in it. The version of Hodge Podge that I like consists of milk, cream, butter, potatoes, green beans, and carrots. 
Maple syrup

Maple syrup is a syrup made from the sap of maple trees. In cold climates, these trees store starch in their trunks and roots before winter. The starch is then converted to sugar that rises in the sap in late winter and early spring. Maple trees are tapped by drilling holes into their trunks and collecting the sap, which is heated to evaporate much of the water, leaving the concentrated syrup.
Nanaimo bars

Nanaimo bars require no baking. They have three layers: a graham cracker crust with shredded coconut and cocoa powder, a sweet custard filling, and a chocolate coating. They have been a mainstay across Canada since the 1950’s. They were first made in the waterfront city of Nanaimo in British Columbia. They became even more popular in the late 1980’s after being featured at Expo 86, the World’s Fair in British Columbia. 
Butter tarts

A butter tart is a flaky pastry with a filling consisting of sugar, egg, corn syrup or maple syrup, and butter. It’s baked and has a crunchy top. Common add-ins are pecans, raisins, and shredded coconut. 
Butter tarts were common in Canadian pioneer cooking. The earliest published recipe for a butter tart is from Barrie, Ontario. It dates back to 1900 in the Women’s Auxiliary of the Royal Victoria Hospital Cookbook. Another early published recipe was found in a 1915 pie cookbook.
BeaverTails

BeaverTails is a Canadian restaurant chain, specializing in pastries known as BeaverTails, that is operated by BeaverTails Canada Inc. Its namesake product are fried dough pastries that resemble beaver tails. They are topped with sweet condiments and confections, such as whipped cream, banana slices, crumbled Oreos, cinnamon sugar, and chocolate hazelnut. They are also made in savoury variations, such as poutine and hot dogs. 
The chain originated in Killaloe, Ontario in 1978 and opened its first permanent store in Ottawa two years later. By 2018, it had 140 franchise locations in six countries: Canada (the Maritimes, Newfoundland and Labrador, Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta, British Columbia and Québec, where the franchise is called Queues de Castor), the United States (New Hampshire, Michigan, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Utah), the United Arab Emirates, Mexico, France, and Japan.
Ketchup chips

French fries and ketchup have gone hand-in-hand since the early 1800’s, but the combination really took off in the 1940’s with the rise of fast food and drive-ins. 
Inspired by this classic combo, adding ketchup-flavoured seasoning to potato chips came to be sometime in the 1970’s. Each chip was dusted with tomato powder, garlic, onion, and spices, infusing smoky, salty, and sweet flavours with a tart bite into every crunch. Since then, millions of chip bags have been torn open and devoured by hungry Canadians. 
Although a quintessential Canadian snack, the origins of ketchup chips are mired in mystery, with no one stepping forward to officially take the credit. At its simplest, it’s believed that this snack was invented by Hostess Potato Chips in the early 1970’s and sold exclusively to the Canadian market.
Digging deeper, it appears that the story could be more complicated. An American company in Pennsylvania, Herr’s Snacks, has reportedly been making ketchup-flavoured potato chips since the early 1980’s. A decade later, the Heinz Ketchup company got on board. They’ve since blended the brands to create Herr’s Heinz Ketchup Flavoured Potato Chips.
The bottom line? Although ketchup chips likely hold dual citizenship, it’s definitely a Canadian classic to the core. While the flavour tends to be scarce south of the border, it can be found in almost every Canadian grocery store. Millions of bags are produced each year by Frito-Lay, the parent company of Hostess. They are also sold by smaller Canadian-owned companies like Covered Bridge.
All-dressed chips

All-dressed is a popular potato chip flavour in Canada. It's a combination of four other flavours: Ketchup, Barbecue, Sour Cream & Onion, and Salt & Vinegar. 
While the consensus is that the flavour originated in Canada, it is unknown who introduced it first. Yum Yum, a Quèbec-based company, is known to have created a variety of the flavour in 1978. The term "all-dressed" and its French equivalent toute garnie originally applied to pizza, meaning "everything on it", “deluxe”, or "the works". The term "all-dressed" extended beyond just pizza and found its way into the world of potato chips. Many early references to the flavour all-dressed are linked to pizza-flavoured potato chips. 
An all-dressed chip called The Whole Shabang is produced by American prison supplier Keefe Group. It became available to the general public in 2016. Frito-Lay began selling all-dressed Ruffles potato chips that same year. In 2024, Co-op Food in the United Kingdom began selling a limited edition all-dressed variety crisp as part of their Irresistible range.

Hagfish slime is an ultra dilute, elastic and cohesive hydrogel that deploys within milliseconds in cold seawater from a glandularly secreted exudate. The slime is made of long keratin-like fibers and mucin-like glycoproteins that span a network which entraps water and acts as a defense mechanism against predators. Unlike other hydrogels, the slime only confines water physically and is very susceptible to mechanical stress, which makes it unsuitable for many processing operations and potential applications. Despite its huge potential, little work has been done to improve and functionalize the properties of this hydrogel. To address this shortcoming, hagfish exudate was mixed with a soy protein isolate suspension (4% w/v) and with a soy emulsion (commercial soy milk) to form a more stable structure and combine the functionalities of a suspension and emulsion with those of the hydrogel. Hagfish exudate interacted strongly with the soy systems, showing a markedly increased viscoelasticity and water retention. Hagfish mucin was found to induce a depletion and bridging mechanism, which caused the emulsion and suspension to flocculate, making "soy slime", a cohesive and cold-set emulsion- and particle gel. The flocculation network increases viscoelasticity and substantially contributes to liquid retention by entrapping liquid in the additional confinements between aggregated particles and protein fibers. Because the mucin-induced flocculation resembles the salt- or acid-induced flocculation in tofu curd production, the soy slime was cooked for comparison. The cooked soy slime was similar to conventional cooked tofu, but possessed a long-range cohesiveness from the fibers. The fibrous, cold-set, and curd-like structure of the soy slime represents a novel way for a cold coagulation and fiber incorporation into a suspension or emulsion. This mechanism could be used to efficiently gel functionalized emulsions or produce novel tofu-like structured food products.

Hmm. Well. IIRC, you usually like getting silly readings rather than serious ones. If I were to do a serious reading here, I don't think either of us would like it. (tl;dr life is currently full of struggles but you have the inner strength to deal with it, etc.)
So uhhhh let's just go for something silly.
(For the uninitiated, we used to play games sometimes where we'd write silly stories using the pictures on the cards instead of doing a serious reading! I stopped offering that option as much once I started getting more takers each night. It takes longer to come up with a story, especially a stupid one. And this is about to be really stupid.)
OKAY so once upon a time there was a soldier who was like "Gosh, it sure does seem like the five of swords is a card of conflict and pyrrhic victory. That seems like kind of a downer so fuck that," and instead he went on an adventure.
As it turns out, though, learning to handle a sword offers up limited career opportunities, and he eventually turned to the circus, where he learned how to do sword swallowing. While there, he met a very beautiful lion tamer. He was very certainly down to clown (no circus pun intended) but as it turned out, she was largely uninterested.
Broken-hearted and without access to a therapist who would've helped him work through his emotions, he fled the circus that had become his home and instead went to The Big City of... um... Milwaukee. Sure.
He lurked the streets of Milwaukee, drowning his sorrows in cheese curds and beer, and he was generally directionless until one day he came across a lady with a baby.
To his surprise, the baby was kind of the brains of the operation here. Its eyes glowed and it spoke in a deep voice and the lady was just one of its many minions that stole cash, jewels, and baby formula for it.
The ex-soldier ex-geek was like "holy shit" and I mean. He was gonna peace out, obviously, but then he really thought about it. He'd followed a king and he'd followed a ring master, and both of them had kind of sucked. So was a demon baby thing really that much worse?

So he became the horrifying child of the corn's right-hand man and eventually learned how to funnel his feelings of restless uselessness and abandonment into jewel thievery and also an art therapy program in nearby Sheboygan.

Last session started with Jax and Cynn talking to the police. They wanted to take the two of them to the law office for questioning and needed them to surrender their weapons. Jax was hesitant, but just as she handed her guantlets over Cynn got pissy about something one of the cops said and tried to mage hand Jax's guantlets back to her and the police opened fire with stun guns. Jax panicked and bolted. A wizard stopped her for a second with hold person, but she broke free and kept running. She managed to blend into the crowds outside and make it down to level 12 and ran to Elysium. She told the bouncer she needed to talk to Krumer and it was an emergency. After a second of hesitation the bouncer relented snd let her in.
At the hospital an operating room had been emptied out and that was where Cael and Lucky were waiting eith Elton. The hospital staff had been able to stabilize him and managed to save his arm, but he was still unconscious and would need to stay in the hospital for a few days after he woke up. Lucky and Cael started arguing about how Cael wasn't a good rose and shouldn't have been assigned to this mission since she doesn't work well with others just like her father. Cael stormed out and took up guard in the hallway.
Elton briefly came to consciousness from a nightmare only to immediately have a anic attack as he realised what was happening. Lucky pressed the call button they'd been given and the doctor came rushing in to give Elton some sedative and he fell unconscious again.
Back at Elysium Jax had been brought to Krumer's office and left to wait. The club was empty. Jax sat on the plush leather couch to wait. After a bit Krumer and Tulip came barging in the back door. Tulip placed herself between Jax and the fromt entrance while Krumer sat behind his desk, between Jax and the other exit. Krumer demanded to know why she'd come there. She explained that she'd just stopped an assassination and the cops had freaked out so she'd ran here because she figured there'd be more cops between her and the only other people she knew in the city. Krumer demanded she give her one good reason to help her. Jax said she didn't know what he wanted her to tell him, she needed help and she didn't know what to do. She thought they might be inclined to help, but if they weren't going to then to tell her who would and she'd go because she just needed help. Krumer and Tulip exchanged a look and he told her to close up the place. Tulip placed a first aid kit on the desk and left. Krumer told Jax to get off the couch before she got blood on it and took her to another room where he started to patch her up and going over her options. Saying that since there was a manhunt for her she should turn herself in the next morning, or go back to the embassy and figure things out there, unless she wanted to just kerp running and leave the city to which Jax said she wished she could. As they were talking Jax's tattoo went off three times. Krumer asked what was going on, so Jax took off the concealment bracelet reavealung the tazer tattoo. Jax said she might have a forth option, grabbing her necklace. Kruer made a joke asking if she had Yuza St. Cloud on speed dial and Jax just grinned and called Yuza. Yuza was very upset and spent a good few minutes curding her out in Infernal before calming down and asking her what happened. Jax said that yeah she should probably go since she still had some flashettes that needed to be dug out. Yuza did not like this, but Jax said that was what happens when you stop an assassination. She then apologized that they probably weren't going to be able to see each other the next day and she was sorry she ran, but she was scared. Yuza said that she wasn't mad at her for running and the call ended. Krumer said that she knew he was joking when he said that right and that Jax was going to have to tell him how she had managed that. To which she was still trying to figure that out and he said welcome to the club and that politics were complicated. Jax said it would be easier if allowed to punch people. Krumer laghed and said yeah but then he'd be the one getting punched. Jax said it's not like he couldn't take it and he said yeah, but it's easier to just say he's a councilman. Tulip pops her head in and then dissapears again and Krumer jokes that it's like she has a sixth sense and always shows up when he's talking about this stuff. Jax laughs and asks how he found Tulip. He says she doesn't have enough blood for the amount of alcohol needed for that story and Jax asks for a raincheck. He says she should get some rest and gives her a vial of blue liquid which jax drinks and then she goes out like a light.

I have been an outspoken critic of Daylight Saving Time (DST) for the last decade plus. And I wasn’t without reason - it statistically is correlated with increased early-morning car accidents due to lost sleep and is generally annoying to get used to. Plus, despite everyone calling it a ‘time change’, my position has always been that this isn’t a time change at all, but a clock change.
Noon, by definition, is when the sun is at the midpoint of its journey from horizon to horizon, and noon is meant to happen at exactly twelve o’clock. Turning the clocks forward an hour is just the government mandating that we get up early. It is man’s hubris to think we can control time itself for our purposes and desires.
But… I must admit, even as a clock-reads-an-hour-later hater, there are some perks. For one thing, it’s kind of nice to wake up in the dark at eight AM and go back to sleep without the lousy sun getting in my eyes. And no matter what I try, I just can’t seem to go to bed before midnight, so it’s nice to have every clock in my house gaslight me into thinking midnight comes earlier. Other than that, there are some stories floating around about farmers golfing in the afternoon or something, so good for them, I guess.
Anyway, if we can somehow all agree that it’s okay to redefine what time it is, why stop there? One hour is hardly enough to really see change in our sleepy-headed society. We need to go farther. Instead of skipping one hour, let’s skip twelve. Introducing Nightlight Saving Time, a magical new paradigm in which the sun rises at dusk and sets at dawn.
Let’s think of some of the many benefits: decreased rates of melanoma, decreased crime in the evening and night, lower cooling needs during the day (great for you climate nerds out there), nocturnal folks finally get a chance to show what they can do, and here’s a fun one - you know how during DST, Pacific Standard Time turns to Pacific Daylight Time, or PDT? Guess what it turns into under NST? That’s right, it’s PNT - and that sounds like ‘pint’! Bars and clubs will see increased attendance because everyone will want to go out on the town for a pint in the bright light of night!
The benefits don’t stop there. Folks who work the ‘graveyard shift’ (this is an offensive term btw) will have the darkness of day to get their shuteye for once, and for everyone else, the blackout curtain industry will experience a never-before-seen boom of sales and innovation!
Now, I know what you’re thinking - isn’t this a little too perfect? Won’t it be difficult to adapt to a whole twelve-hour difference? And yes, sure, the first few months or so after the change will have some people groggy and disoriented, but I say it’s a small price to pay - especially if we never change back to standard time at all! Think of how strong the American economy could be if we were all awake when the rest of the world expected us to be asleep. We could operate our stock markets under the cover of day, right under everyone else’s noses, and become the economic superpower the founding fathers always intended.
I hope you’ll all consider my humble proposition and share the other ways it could benefit your lives. Maybe even call your congressmen and tell them about it! But for now, the sun has been up for a few hours now and I must be going off to bed.
