I started playing Warhammer 40k: Space Marine today and found one of my new favourite guard characters (and possible new fiction crush). For those who know about 2nd Lieutenant Mira, you’ll know where this is going. For those who don’t, I’d like to introduce you to one of the best guard characters.
This is 2nd Lieutenant Mira of the 203rd Cadian Shock Troops Regiment.

She’s not overly attractive by conventional standards, I would say mostly average, but by the Emperor is she a great leader. During an Ork invasion, she was able to essentially single handedly establish defenses. Yes, she wasn’t the original leader, but after all her superiors died, she was able to hold the defenses for way longer than anyone thought.
Not only is she skilled in combat, but she also cares about her men and those she is protecting. She is smart enough to know when a battle isn’t worth fighting because it is a waste of men, but also can encourage her troops to fight when she knows they can win.
And last but not least… she is able to work with space marines and treats them as just other soldiers. Space Marines have a tendency to be high pompous assholes, which is encouraged by how people talk to them. They are genetically modified 7ft tall super soldiers who are considered essentially demigods by most people. Mira though? She treats them with respect, but above that, there’s none of the groveling, none of the “we are blessed by the presence of you, the Emperor is watching over us” bs. She treats them more as colleagues or just superior officers.
In conclusion, 2nd Lieutenant Mira is an overall badass and a great leader. Fucking love this character.

"I'll have two number 9s, a number 9 large, a number 6 with extra dip, a number 7, two number 45s, one with cheese, and a large recaff." Working the vox is very hungry work.
***
Another uncomplicated work that went down smoothly. Won him on auction last week and once I was finished with my previous project I got to work on this one.
The painting steps are the same as my other new Cadian model I painted a couple of months back so I banged it out in three consecutive sessions.
Slowly building a Platoon Command Squad now that I have a Commander and a Vox Operator. Just missing three more veterans.

One of my first tanks! Such a wee lad! Also I don't hate painting hazard stripes... Sure it takes a bit more effort but it's relaxing

Fall of Cadia is a banger for a lot of reasons (Rath is a great action writer and Trazyn is a shot of pure delight) but I think my favorite part of this book is just how twisted Cadian society was, long before Abaddon showed up. They turned their planet into a death cult then told half the people they weren't good enough to die. Of course there were chaos worshippers, and revolutionaries, and just as much rot inside as out. Of course their people were traumatized practically from birth. The planet broke before the guard did because Cadia was already broken.
This is the 40k grimdark that really works for me. The mundane, the chillingly real. The society that only feeds its people half of the rations they need to live if they aren't deemed good enough killers. Or aren't rich enough to game the system. This place was doomed...but that doesn't make the stories that happened there any less significant. The mistakes and the triumphs and the tragedies all mattered to the people that lived them. Which is so beautifully shown when the people that can make the choice, choose to live. Screw the Inquisition or the forces of literal space hell trying to stop them. Cadia was doomed, but it's people weren't. That's kinda nice to think about.
