After a coroner's inquest ruled Soleiman Faqiri's 2016 death at the hands of Ontario jail guards was a homicide, his family hopes to use a Saturday evening vigil to move forward from the nearly seven years they spent fighting for the truth.  Held at Toronto's Yonge-Dundas square Saturday, the seventh annual vigil for Soleiman will be the last, said his brother, Yusuf Faqiri.  Soleiman died shackled, pepper sprayed and covered with a spit hood while face down on a cell floor in the Central East Correctional Centre in Lindsay, Ont. He was also repeatedly struck by guards, who carried out 60 policy breaches in his death, as revealed during the inquest.

I'm in the process of filling out a Disability Tax Credit application which just gives you a tiny tax credit if they think you're disabled enough and also a useless savings account that you can't touch until you're 60.

I'm hard of hearing. I wear hearing aids and still can't hear properly because my hearing disability is mostly central, not peripheral. I don't count as being significantly impaired by my hearing because the hearing impairment section uses the same criteria as all the others: you are significantly impaired in a quiet setting despite the use of assistive devices and it takes you three times longer to hear than someone else.

Most obvious issue: why only quiet setting? I'm never in a quiet setting. I physically can hear higher pitched noises than most humans because of my disability. I also have tinnitus so it's never quiet. I can hear wifi. I can hear electricity. I can hear ventilation. It is never quiet. Especially for a central hearing disability which disproportionately affects the differentiation of sound.

Second obvious issue: what do you mean 'takes three times longer'. Everyone hears at the same speed. 343 m/s. Literally everyone. That's the speed of sound in air. Oh you mean repeating things three times? Have you met someone willing to keep talking to you after you've made them repeat themself three times? Have you met a lecturer who will repeat themself for you? Have you met a doorbell that will respond when you ask it to?

Hopefully it works out since my mobility and mental health are also shit but d/Deaf and HoH people should be allowed to get this too. We're just as disabled as the rest of the community. You just need to spend the small amount of effort to make guidelines that aren't nonsense.

[The origin of the Belle Park totem pole in Kingston, Ontario, at least in part. Queen Elizabeth was visiting for the Kingston tercentenary, and this totem pole was one of a number made at that time by Indigenous inmates at Collin's Bay Penitentiary and Joyceville Institution, two medium security federal prisons in Kingston. 

Who the carvers were, the inception of the project, whose idea was it, how it fits into the broader activities of the Native Brotherhood at Joyceville, all of that is still a little hazy to me - but the hard work of local researchers has resulted in a stupendous resource available here online: https://belleparkproject.com/the-place/totem-pole. It answers a lot of my questions and features the words of many of the carvers - a useful corrective to the Whig's slant here.

The Advance - the inmate newspaper at Joyceville - has a notice in June indicating OECA Channel 19 interviewed the totem pole carvers on May 18, for broadcast July 1 & 2 in Toronto. The Advance praises the tercentenary project as a "significant symbol of the role Native People have played in the evolvement of the Canadian people." Haven't read earlier issues yet to get a better feel. 

In terms of outside newspaper coverage, there is this dramatic image from April 17 crediting MP Flora MacDonald for getting the wood shipping from BC. Which is all about how great the local Conservative MP is, not the carvers.

In terms of the broader context, Seth Adema's article “Native Brotherhoods and Decolonization in Ontario's Federal Prisons' is pretty crucial, and available for free online if you search. The totem pole is still on the Belle Park golf course, which has become during the pandemic a tent encampment for Kingston’s growing unhoused population. The city keeps trying to evict them all - presumably to re-open the golf course - while local solidarity activists try and stop it.  Belle Island, where the park is partly located, is a site with great significance to the local First Nations, but was of course a garbage dump at one point because this is Canada...]

A pricey trip for a group of Conservative MPs sponsored by an interest group and a Hungarian think-tank could soon come under the microscope by the House of Commons ethics committee.

NDP ethics critic Matthew Green served notice Monday that he will introduce a motion for the committee to take a closer look at a trip to London last June sponsored by Canadians for Affordable Energy and the Danube Institute. The trip, billed as an opportunity to discuss energy policy, included thousands of dollars in flights, hotels and ground transportation as well as a dinner at the Guinea Grill in London's Mayfair district with $600 bottles of champagne that rung in at an estimated $6,262.

“From Agassiz Correctional Camp: Camp Puppeteers entertain youngsters,”  THE CHILLIWACK PROGRESS, Wednesday, November 3, 1971. 3A. ---- The Camp Puppeteers were activated at the Agassiz Correctional Work Camp during July of this year. 

The Camp Superintendent, W. A. Hall, asked Cliff Sherlock, a former professional puppeteer and now a staff member at the camp, to form the group as a a therapeutic activity for the men. Since that time the club performed weekly shows for the Easter Seal Camp for crippled children at Chehalis during the summer months, the Agassiz Raspberry Social, the Chilliwack fall fair, and at several schools and community functions. 

On Sunday, they performed at the Kiwanis Halloween Party at the Chilliwack Armories before more than 400 youngsters. Because of the large crowd it was was necessary to put on two shows. 

The club consists of 15 men who are accompanied by three musicians from the camp when required. At present they have a repertoire of four plays with a further two plays in the process of being prepared for the Christmas season.

Several bookings have been accepted by the club within the upper Fraser Valley area tion. between now and Christmas, but they are still open for more engagements from any interested group or organization.

The men gladly donate their talents to any community social or charitable function but are also seeking private commercial engagements.
