Understanding the Basics of Car Engine Types

When buying a car, one of the most critical aspects to understand is the type of engine it uses. The engine is the heart of any vehicle, and knowing how different car engine types work can help you make an informed decision. Whether you’re considering fuel efficiency, power, or environmental impact, each engine type offers unique advantages. In this blog, we’ll break down the basics of car engine types, including petrol, diesel, hybrid, and electric engines, to help you choose the one that fits your needs.
1. Petrol Engines
Petrol engines, also known as gasoline engines, are among the most common types found in passenger vehicles. These engines use a spark-ignition system to ignite the air-fuel mixture inside the combustion chamber.
Advantages of Petrol Engines:
Smoother and Quieter: Petrol engines tend to run smoother and quieter compared to diesel engines.
Lower Initial Cost: Cars with petrol engines are generally cheaper than diesel variants.
Lower Maintenance: Maintenance costs are typically lower due to simpler engine design and fewer emissions control components.
Disadvantages of Petrol Engines:
Lower Fuel Efficiency: Petrol engines usually consume more fuel than diesel engines.
Higher Emissions: They emit more carbon dioxide, contributing more to environmental pollution.
2. Diesel Engines
Diesel engines work on the principle of compression ignition. Instead of using a spark, the air is compressed to a high temperature, and fuel is injected into the chamber, causing it to ignite.
Advantages of Diesel Engines:
Better Fuel Economy: Diesel engines are more fuel-efficient, especially on long drives and highways.
Higher Torque: Ideal for towing and heavy-duty vehicles due to strong torque output.
Longer Engine Life: Diesel engines are robust and generally last longer.

The car isn’t built for him, he just built the car 😂
#seriously though he’s doing it all now#finished school at 14 probably with basic maths but he’s an engineer now#Christian he’s coming for your job next#give him a car so he can rest jfc#max verstappen

I like to think, Quintin had many sleepless nights, and rants to just about anyone that would care to listen about the Titan Tanks
[Ignore my use of Lego hands, real hands are to much for me in this trying time, as wlll as my shitty art lmao]
To add, Lilith would gladly listen even though she's a bio chemical engineer
[She is a supportive friend/girlfriend]
The Tank in question

I am in hell. Got stuck in heavy traffic due to a crash and my damn car started smoking and I had to pull over. Now I'm waiting for the wrecker to get here and tow me home. Problem being he will have to contend with THIS

and that's assuming he can FIND ME which isn't 100% guaranteed bc I didn't know exactly what mile marker I was at and originally forgot that the interstate is InterState and the lady on the phone tried to tell me I needed to call someone closer lmao.
I just hope the cops don't show up and start questioning why I'm pulled over bc my dude it was an emergency.
All I can say is THANK YOU TRUCK BROTHER who waited for me to cross lanes and pull over bc he apparently saw the issue.
#this happened before#apparently my dad didnt fix it :/#basically something is wrong with my radiator and when im moving cold air is cooling my engine#but when im not moving#like when stuck in heavy traffic#MY ENGINE GETS TOO HOT#I just hope the car isnt fucked

wemblectra as a seperate character parodying battery electric trains could be fun. They’re a roller coaster enthusiast because routes bring empty cars uphill/full cars downhill (charging battery through regenerative braking) is a decent application for them. Really good at being lazy because they also make sense for janky commuter railroads that only send each train back and forth once or twice and have them sit around outside of rush hour (it’s a stupid policy but eh battery’s better than diesel idling for hours)
I need to research what Britain is doing with battery locos though since this is mostly based on US (and I think Australia)
#i will maintain that replica electra is direct electric only#it’s much more interesting because so few people get how they work and it’s more politically relevant/important to explore#it’s why i won’t show them recharging. they only have a small battery (like a car) for basic lights/controls#they just become dead weight on non electrified lines unless externally powered#(they can also be coaster enthusiasts because some of them have regenerative braking but the 70s-era engines i ref do not)

thinking about my old youth pastor who was a flight engineer in the Coast Guard and would randomly tell us stories about times he almost died because "coast guard planes are so old 90% of my job is being done by computers in most planes"
#once 3/4 engines went out and he said he and the pilot just made a long moment of eye contact bc they were basically just gliding#they ended up landing on a beach which was apparently considered a success as it wasn't crashing or landing in water#apparently planes have door indicators just like cars and it said a door was open#and a guy went to check it barely tapped the door it flew off entirely#and as he was dragged out of the plane he tried to grab the closest thing (which happened to be my youth pastor)#(they were both fine the guy just kinda swung around under the plane got some whiplash and windburn but was ultimately fine)#also the times orders could be summed up in “fly directly into that hurricane yes the one everyone is running from do u see another one?"#doueverthink

you ever go through a parking lot so unreasonable you need the identity of the engineer who signed off on it so that you can get their license revoked
#it’s not easy to get a PE license and you have to work under another PE for 5 years to get one#which prevents me from getting one rn even tho i passed the fundamentals of engineering exam#since basically nobody in automotive manufacturing has one#anyways despite all this i still got into parking lot hell where only one car could be in an aisle at once

Oh right i never actually did anything about the engineer au did i
#random#au idea#tsams why must you haunt me in this way#Okay basically a bloodmoon au where they get tired of depending on other folks to fix em up#So they just. become an engineer.#crash at a car shop for a bit and demand lessons#Take courses online through the daycare computers when no one’s operating it#possibly ‘threaten’ solar and eclipse into teaching them some stuff in p&s#Yknow that kinda thing#anyways#yea they also might learn some software stuff for the sake of tryna figure out how their code behaves#just realizing that this is the second au in which i give a tsams character a profession#Whoops

Actually it is SO weird to me to remember that I was an engineering student and that later on I had been pursuing a minor in statistics
I may be a IT & com person in the end, but I do have the foundations of engineering and statistics in my brain too. Wild !
#speculation nation#if i hadnt liked coding so much i probably wouldve still been an engineer.#like my school does a first year engineering track where u learn the basics and then explore different engineering options#so by ur second year u choose your official track and that decides the rest of your schooling.#and id been thinking about computer & electrical engineering. often goes hand in hand.#guys i couldve been an electrical engineer. honestly that wouldve been so cool. wasnt meant to be tho 👍#i took a coding class my 2nd semester. first experience with coding. it was in C. i LOVED it.#and it got me comparing computer engineering and computer science and i decided that i wanted to do computer science#but well the intro course for that fucking sucked. didnt wanna go back to engineering either bc i hated engineering lol#im smart enough but it's fuckin soul sucking man.#eventually tho i found my way to my current home. im a techie :3 and im happy with that.#anyways do i seem like the kind of person who was into engineering and statistics? sometimes it's weird for me to remember.#but i did spent Years assuming id end up as an engineer. my grandpa was one. my dad was studying to be one b4 he dropped out#and my sister is one. just kinda runs in the family i guess. & so i was So Sure that was where i was going.#took. an engineering class in high school and everything. taught me some good foundational skills in modeling#also was the class that let me develop my signature. bc we had a notebook we had to sign the top of every day#so me doing my signature over and over again. i decided to use it as an opportunity to make it My Own. rather than just my name in cursive.#so yeah im a techie that talks good but i do have that math brain. engineering basis. statistics knowledge.#kinda feel like a jack of all trades (master of none) with it all. but see thats a good thing for companies (i hope)#ive got foundational knowledge of many things. and i am Adaptable. they can teach me the in depth shit i need to know themselves.#and i Also have my work experience in management... which i hope will help my case when applying to companies too.#aaaahhh!!! so many things to think about!!! but at the end of the day i am smart & educated and i will be a good asset to any company i join#i just need to convince them of that 😂 but i can probably figure something out. something !!!#i will graduate college and get some kind of IT job that pays decently & work my way up to maybe someday being an IT manager or smth#i can finally start. truly growing up. instead of being stuck in forever college unable to drive myself anywhere.#have my IT job and a car and the ability to do Whatever i want.... god i want it so bad.#im just daydreaming by this point. god im so excited to finally graduate college.

who do you think is smarter: dean or sam?
neither? i think the show goes out of its way to say they're pretty evenly matched. they just find fulfillment through different types of stimuli. sam seems to prefer the more academic, research-oriented type pursuits. dean seems to prefer to tinker around with things and figure out how they work. but like... they're both versatile. dean can do the research, obviously. and he has his GED so he can also obviously do the work necessary to pass a test. and sam supposedly rebuilt (edit: fixed up) the impala in between s7 and s8 so he can also obviously do the tinkering type stuff.
#replies#anonymous#im ngl i dont actually buy that sam rebuilt the impala#because it makes no sense#dean was teaching him very basic things about the engine in s3#and there was never any time to follow through on that#but i dont doubt that sam COULD rebuild a car (or engine) if he put his mind to it#i just dont see any evidence that it actually happened#he took that car to a body shop lol

your dad 😭 that's so rude… curious about what it's like to watch a race at your home 😂
oh to be clear, he said that as a joke 🫣 he did not want it to happen 🫣🫣 it was just very badly timed lol because i was so happy and then he just suggested that something like that could happen……. 😩
#basically in my home it’s#1. me ranting about oscar and random things he and lando did today or eight weeks ago#2. the engine sounds and radio from alonso’s car blasting through my dad’s phone#3. ‘let’s go lando lando is okayyy’ - my dad#4. ‘dudududuuuu max verstappennn’ - me#5. ‘do you really need to watch this live?…’ - my mom#asks!#anon!

beginning to understand what iketani meant with working on your own car makes you fonder of it bc i just replaced my brake discs and brake pads all on my own and the sense of pride and love for my car is unlike anything ive ever felt man
#ngl feeling so accomplished#even if it took me three hours bc my entire body weight was not enough to get the old rusty crusty dusty 17 year old discs off#had to ask the garage owner for help#not gonna lie when he showed up w a whole ass hammer he kinda scared me but#guess it was necessary??#anyways yippieeeee new brake discs#ventilated ones!!#honestly getting everything off was the hardest part#putting everything back on was basically just reverse engineering#man the new discs are so shiny every time i pass my car now im like ooh shiny#like what am i#a bird??#also shoutout to the 3mm of brake pad left on my old brake pads i cannot for the life of me believe my car stopped with those#took them out was like ''oh there's still quite a bit left'' then compared them to the new pads and there was a whole centimeter difference#like oh lawd.#BUT WE DID IT#IM SO HAPPY#my babygirl (read: car) was so brave#i hope i wont have to do this again anytime soon bc#do i feel proud#yes#do i have crippling anxiety that i messed up somewhere despite following The ChrisFix Tutorial and asking for a once-over by the garage owne#also yes#but f it we ball#iketani was right that shit do make u feel very proud#ok that's it that's my rambling for today#for the stray person reading this ily
