Cardfight Vanguard Rant because I want to love this series so bad but life apparently doesn't want me to.
For reference I live in Ireland for some geographical context.
I feel like cardfight vanguard is one of the hardest shit to get into without spending like a lot of money on it unless I'm just being dumb which I hope is the case honestly cuz I love this series.
Like I spent over an hour looking for somewhere to read the original manga and I can't find anywhere that has above the 5th chapter translated which doesn't make any sense because there's an official translated print of the manga which I can still buy but I don't have 120 euro to drop on a manga series rn lol.
Also like I know bushiroad is struggling as a company but who was gonna tell me they closed the servers for vanguard zero last year????? Now there's no mobile game coverage for the series at all which I feel like is a big blow to people that might not have a huge vanguard community to play with as that was probably their only way to get some acc playtime in. Now there is the overdress game which I do actually really wanna get some time but it's like 80 euros and that's not amount I can jus pull out of my ass either.
Having the anime for overdress readily available on YouTube is huge honestly and probably a big part of why I haven't dropped the series yet as a whole lmao so that's great but I feel like that's the only good thing theyve done for it in the last while.
Now idk I could be wrong I know vanguard has never been a popular card game in my area it's always struggled none of my local card shops stock vanguard anymore (which again adds to the cost as I need to outsource all my cards) and I haven't met a single soul id be able to play with around here but if other people's experience with it is different I'd love to hear it.
Vanguard is a series that's always had a very permanent place in my heart I still remember being at my freinds house and stumbling onto the series by accident while doom scrolling through crunchy roll trying to find something to watch and immediately fell in love with the series, i still have all my original starter decks which are probably extremely obsolete now lmao but I love looking at them all the same. Out of the new products I have the danji starter deck for overdress I love the vibes of dark states. But yeah if anyone has tips on how to get more into the scene or has had a similar experience with it id love to talk about it and make some friends who're also into vanguard! Gonna be honest my limit of vanguard above base level is really limited because of the on and offness with which I approached the series for the above reasons but I wanna COMMMITTTT I WANNA LEARNNNNN. Or even if I'm just doing stuff wrong and looking in the wrong places like pls let me know.
Anyways cardfight blogs pls interact I love y'all 💖💖💖

You know what? 200% credit to the anime that are OFFICIALLY FREE ON YOUTUBE.
Now that I think about it, that is LITERALLY the #1 way to avoid pirating

YU-YU KONDO from CARDFIGHT VANGUARD OVERDRESS/WILL+DRESS
Tumblr media
JUSTIFICATION:
"Listen. *LISTEN.* I have made three whole essays about how trans this girl is. To sum it up: her deck’s comic is transformation, her avatars are all female, she’s more confident in a dress, she confesses to having a secret she hasn’t told anyone but never actually to what that secret is, honestly I’m still expecting them to maybe make her come out in later series of the franchise, because, there’s so much evidence of Transness that I honestly don’t see how it could be unintentional. Again: three whole essays." - @infinity-squared-comics

So excited to see your new blog up and running and that you added Cardfight! Vanguard to your fandom list. Id like to request for Brown Sugar Boba head cannons for the Cardfight! Vanguard Overdress men. Specifically Danji, Tohya, Raika, Zakusa, and Jinki. I'll likely send in a request for the Divinez characters at some point as well but wanted to make this my first request. Thank you lovely!!!
Tea Type: Brown Sugar Boba
Potential Triggers: N/A
Pairing: Danji/Reader, Tohya/Reader, Raika/Reader, Zakuza/Reader, Jinki/Reader
Length: 813
Summary: N/A
A/N: Of course darling, hope you enjoy these! As always, thanks for your constant support, it means the world!
Danji:
Tumblr media
Such a sweetheart
He’s really respectful- checks before tickling you every time, via body language or verbally depending on the situation.
He’s really conscious about the loss of control that happens and he’s not huge about being on the receiving end except for those he really, really trust so he’s especially careful to never cross boundaries.
He’s teasy but in a very kind, playful way. Mainly teases his Lee about their reactions and how adorable they look.
Loves to go for the midsection, thinks squeezing their sides and hearing them squeal is the funniest thing.
Raspberries are one of his go-to methods, especially on the tummy but he will also go for someone’s neck, if he knows they’re weak there.
“Ha! Look at you squirm, yet I haven’t heard a single plea to stop yet. Could you get any cuter?”
“Let’s see how much you can take today!”
Tohya:
Tumblr media
Likes to use tickling as a playful punishment if someone annoys him.
Yu-yu is a constant target because he’s always muttering under his breath and being a brat.
He’s a bit meaner when teasing, he’s not afraid to fluster his Lee to the point they’re begging him to shut up.
Enjoys using tickling as a way to release sadistic urges, as long as his Lee is fine with it.
“Oh, you want me to shut up? Not stop tickling you? Careful, keep talking like that and you’ll have me thinking you like this~”
“Not my fault you’re so easily flustered. You make it so easy!”
Will chuckle along with you as you’re laughing, finds your laughter weakened attempts at shoving him off horribly endearing.
“Listen to that! Bad spot? You have no right looking cute even when you snort. Should be illegal honestly.”
Uses his old doctoral knowledge to teach you anatomy with a hands on demonstration.
Newer to being a Ler, but excels at it in a way that feels unfair.
Raika:
Tumblr media
He doesn’t even really tease!
His Lee just needs to look at him and the most they’ll get is a head tilt, smirk or raised eyebrow.
His confidence is what makes him so skilled. No hesitation when he drills into someone’s ribs.
Scoffs if his Lee has a particularly big reaction and may mutter something about “not even really trying”.
If he feels a bit more verbal that day, he’ll poke fun about the Lee’s sensitivity, and boast how much he’s affecting them
“This is all it takes to make you scream? How pitiful. You’re really in for it as my experience grows. How lucky I have you as my willing victim; I appreciate your sacrifice.”’
Zakusa:
Tumblr media
Zakusa is a wildcard. You never know what he’s plotting till it’s too late, and his techniques vary just as much.
He basically adapts to whatever his Lee is weak to; he’s known for how perceptive he is.
Also, he’s the one who knows every person’s worst spot-even if he’s never seen them tickled before. He’s really good at clocking someone watching a tickle fight from afar and seeing where their hands defend.
Depends on what the person’s comfy with/if they piss him off if he shares that information or not.
Though his style can change, his default is really gentle, almost featherlight.
Loves to trace along areas, and watch his Lee try to not giggle or react.
Gradually moves up to spidering and then will experiment more to find the best technique once they crack, under either his nimble fingers or his teasing.
Really teasy, in fact I’d say his mouth is more of a weapon than his hands when it comes to tickling.
Loves to commentate on his Lee’s reactions and then will snicker when they readjust.
“Embarrassed? Then why are you blushing? How amusing. Hiding your face now doesn’t help your case, you know. If you wanted me to tickle you more, all you had to do was ask, not expose more spots for me~”
Another one whose mouth is his greatest weapon.
Jinki:
Tumblr media
Probably the meanest out of these five.
He takes unabashed sadistic glee in messing with his Lee and making them as embarrassed as possible.
“Ahh, I see you’re quite sensitive here, hm? How unfortunate for you. Beg me to go somewhere else, why don’t you? Maybe I’ll listen if you beg well enough for me~”
He can be really mean, but he does have a soft side, once everything shakes out.
“Come now, let me see that beautiful smile darling. A small one? Else I’ll have to take matters into my own hands.”
He wiggles his fingers playfully, and gives time to flee.
That daker side is definitely still a part of him, especially if his partner enjoys it, but he feels a lot of guilt for exploiting their weakness when he was at his lowest and therefore needs a lot of reassurance.
Doesn’t stop him from being a menace though.
“Tell me you like this, or you’ll get nothing.”

Complaining about Danji and Megumi's relationship
One episode of Vanguard willDress made me rethink Danji and Megumi's relationship in light of what he does in the episode and I have no good words for him.
I feel like the key issue is that they don't have an equal understanding of what their relationship entails.
Megumi treats Danji like 1. an older brother, 2. a role model, and 3. a standard of strength. As an older brother, she depends on him emotionally and while this aspect does weaken with time, she still treats him like family would: welcoming him, checking up on him, worrying for him. It comes from a place of caring and concern which is likely fueled by the time they spent together as he helped her out through Vanguard.
As a role model, Megumi aspires to Danji's ability to do things that matter in the grand scheme. Danji has connections, notoriety, and skills which allow him to take actions when he feels it necessary. And I believe Megumi wants to do that too. Being the detective type who can both sniff out wrongdoing and beat up whoever's doing it. It's unrealistic, but not uncommon.
As a standard of strength, Megumi always thinks back to Danji when she thinks of being stronger. It makes sense as he's had the most consistent record out of her friends, he's likely beaten her more than she's beaten him, and he certainly acts the part of the strong guy. It's an image that Danji has built up and Megumi truly believes it.
Compare that to Danji. He likely sees Megumi as 1. a little sister and 2. a strong fighter. The little sister part comes from how they met. Danji was friends with Megumi's older brother first and then bonded with her over Vanguard. It's easy to see this in how he treats her (when he notices her).
The more notable way he interacts with her is as a strong fighter. He regularly compliments her on this as he has fun when they cardfight. Indeed, after his departure from Blackout, he mainly interacts with Megumi through onscreen fights.
Already it is obvious that Danji and Megumi hold very different ideas about each other and that's normal for relationships. The problem comes when you realize that while Megumi relies on Danji, Danji doesn't feel similarly responsible for her. Megumi really depends on Danji or her image of him to guide her; both as a cardfighter but also as a person. She wants him to recognize her and her skills both in the game and outside of it and be someone that he can rely on in turn. Danji has no idea of this and no drive to build up Megumi in a similar way. He just treats her like a friend who he happens to meet when it's convenient.
A more concrete description of the issue here is that Megumi puts Danji on a pedestal and Danji doesn't see Megumi as notable at all.
Two episodes highlight these issues well. The first is episode 0 of overDress season 2. In it Megumi boards the train that Danji is riding in an attempt to run away with him. They fight and ultimately Megumi decides to let him go his own path even if they separate. The second is episode 5 of willDress season 3, a disgusting episode that led to the creation of this very post.
But before we devolve into a complaining session, we'll begin with Blessed Rain, the ep 0. Megumi has always had a unique narrative link to Tohya in that they grapple with the idea of throwing away everything else for one specific thing. Tohya 'successfully' threw everything away for the sake of Vanguard and even when he was convinced of his errors, he never did go back to his old life. This episode is Megumi's attempt of doing the same: throwing everything away to stay with Danji. Danji, of course, objects and makes it so that she get off the train before he does. Seems straightforward enough. In fact, I was fooled into thinking Megumi was thinking over her relationship with Danji in that fight and growing through reflection. On its own, it's a nice sendoff to their relationship as Megumi realizes that she can be connected to Danji through their bond rather than physically. In light of recent events however, I am tempted to interpret that fight as an affirmation of her fixation on Danji. She doesn't seem to say these things as an acceptance that she must let Danji go, instead she speaks as though she will always be connected to Danji even if they are apart. She "has so much of him in her" in the sense that everything she does can be connected to him. And people, that is not moving on, at least not definitely. However, the episode as well-written enough that you could interpret it generously and be correct.
a glorious day, ep 5, has no such interpretations. It is a poorly written mess that takes what little character development Megumi could've had in the Uniformers arc and sends it spiraling down the drain. ok, the episode sees Danji checking up on Blackout after his adventures in the US. Of course, everyone is concerned about Uniformers, especially since two of their best: Zakusa and Megumi have stopped showing up, a tell-tale sign of Uniformers membership. Danji doesn't seem to give a shit. He says Zakusa is a grown man with his own life and is shocked that people blame him for Megumi leaving. Now why would they blame him? Primarily because they all knew Megumi texts Danji regularly and he hasn't answered for a LONG time maybe from the beginning of the Deluxe itself, two seasons ago. Danji gets peer pressured into checking on Megumi and possibly bringing her back to Blackout. Megumi and Danji then have a fight ...
and nothing happens
Yeah, nothing of note happens. We get collectively scared that Megumi would be a Uniformer and truly betray Blackout and all Danji needed to do was show up and act like he actually cared all this time to bring her back. He just needed to act exactly how he always does. And you could see Megumi was frustrated with him but he doesn't actually do anything to assure her or even fucking talk to her. He just spouts his usual nonsense of liking to fight strong opponents and somehow a 6th-damage heal causes Megumi to cast aside all of her frustrations with him.
This episode gave me the idea that while Megumi put Danji on a higher and higher pedestal, Danji has objectified Megumi into another faceless cardfighter. He doesn't actually respect her and he doesn't actually see her beyond Vanguard. He doesn't even enlist her to help train Yu-yu or something. Mirei does that. The worst thing is that he doesn't formulate a real apology for ignoring her. It's not like he went silent over all of Blackout so the choice to ignore her was deliberate. He should've known how important he was to her when she nearly abandoned her life to follow him on that train. The responsible bare minimum would have been to send an update along with a warning/request not to text him while he's on his secret missions. Heck, it would've been better if he just outright blocked her to stop her from messaging him at all. Instead he leaves her hanging because he knows she's strong and that's the only reason he maintains this bond.
A person I follow online suggested that Megumi needs to follow in Raika's footsteps to really move on. Raika truly saw and was disappointed by Michiru's character and so his admiration turned into a will to surpass him. I disagree. I've said it before but Megumi needs a life that she cannot connect to Danji at all. Even when he's the most deadbeat friend, her fond memories lead her to forgive him too easily. Megumi needs to reevaluate herself and build an image that isn't reliant on Danji. Blessed Rain could've worked as this if she put all the things that connect her and Danji in the past as a guide and a fuel but she didn't. She continuously brings Danji to the forefront of her mind and it needs to stop. Danji in turn, needs to decide how much he wants to be there for Megumi because (he may not realize it but) their relationship is especially important to Megumi and he either needs to step up to that importance or start establishing distance. He shouldn't get to show up only when it's convenient for him after leaving her on read for weeks or months.
It remains to be seen what will become of Megumi and Danji and the rest of the cast in the future of the story. Megumi is in a pretty troublesome character limbo that prevents her from winning at all in the face of the current conflict. And we on Twitter regularly bemoan the various ways the do our girl dirty. We will continue to complain until they give our girl the respect she deserves.
Thank you very much for reading this long insignificant rant. I really disliked ep 5 and this all came out the more I thought about it. I would love to hear other people's thoughts on this matter.

I love corruption arcs; I love it when a persons ideals are taken too far, when a good person decides that the ends justify any means. When someone who wholeheartedly believes they are good realizes the consequence of their actions
(This post is about Bastion potentially getting a masque-)

Who should turn evil results
Tumblr media
Yuyu has won very interesting 😄. I would be interested in seeing a protagonist besides Aichi become evil for once too.
Aichi is in second place…😅 Did he make second place off pure memes or do people really want him to become an antagonist for a fifth time?! He beat Emi and Chrono RIP🤣. Seriously you guys are tempting fate. I wouldn’t even be surprised if Aichi became evil again. It’s only a matter of when not if at this point.
Bushiroad: *sees Aichi got second place*

My last trans Yu-yu essay before the finale.
Listen. Yu-yu Kondo is not cis. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. There’s a lot going into this headcanon, and a lot of reasons it may very well be canon. I’ve layed out many of them in a previous essay, but today I’m gonna look at stuff I either newly discovered or that was newly released. Starting off with the most recent episode (minor spoilers). One of the main metaphors uses throughout this episode was that of a dress. Now, I probably don’t have to tell you that dresses are associated with femininity. For Yu-yu specifically, this metaphorical dress that their friends have woven around them is associated with comfort. Now, why would someone choose a dress as a metaphor for comfort? Perhaps because dresses are something that comforts them, as they comfort many transfems, myself included. Next point- the actual footage of Yu-yu wearing a dress. This metaphor of Yu-yu’s friends providing “comfort like a dress” is inter-spliced with footage of the first episode, where Yu-yu met many of their friends while wearing a dress. Now, the question we must ask ourselves is, why did the creators choose to put Yu-yu in a dress in that first episode? Why did they choose to remind us of that in the penultimate episode? Why is “dress” used as a word throughout the series, for both series names and for the names of most keyword abilities (overdress, dressboost, revoldress, X-overdress, unison dress, dress up)? It’s been said that writers never put in details for no reason. Why would dresses be so heavily associated with the series and with Yu-yu themselves? Could it be that the writers are priming us for the idea that Yu-yu could be a girl? Maybe. Once again, I’d like to point out that Yu-yu uses a dress as a metaphor for comfort. This is an extremely transfem feeling.
Next up, the speeches. I’ve talked about some of Yu-yu’s heavily trans coded speeches before, but I’d like to point out that Yu-yu averages one speech about being yourself, finding yourself, accepting yourself or staying true to yourself per season (none that I remember in season 1, two in season 2, one after Danji and Tohya’s fight and one during Yu-yu’s fight with Mirei, one in season 3 during their fight with Raika, one in season four during their fight with Urara, an none as of yet in season 5, with one episode remaining). The themes of being oneself is constant throughout Yu-yu’s characterization, and is a theme that resonates with many trans people, myself included.
Now that I’ve explained the in text evidence for Yu-yu’s gender, let me explain out of text reasoning that Bushiroad might choose to have their newest protagonist come out as trans. First off, the Bridget effect. When Bridget came out as trans, she skyrocketed sales of guilty gear strive to 1,000,000 copies. A character being trans brings an extreme amount of attention in today’s sociopolitical climate- it’s a hot issue, and will lead to countless discussions from both trans allies and bigots, furthering the promotion of the franchise to new heights. In addition, Bushiroad has said that it’s important to them for every player to feel represented in vanguard. What better reason could there be to introduce a new type of character?
Bushiroad is no stranger to queer undertones and even the occasional queer overtones, from Kai and Aichi, to Miaki and Kourin, to Rummy Labrynth, to team New Nippon where it wasn’t even undertones that boy just straight up told his teammates he had a crush on them. This is not only possible, I feel it’s likely: Yu-yu is a trans character, it’s engrained in their identity and story, and I truly believe that Yu-yu coming out in next week’s episode will be the best possible conclusion to their story. What better way to end a story of self acceptance, then with becoming oneself?
