Danmei and Baihe C Novels and Manhua Officially Licensed in English
Things are getting licensed fast enough that keeping a list like this up-to-date is basically impossible, but I saw someone asking in the tags so I figured I'd try. All titles are danmei unless otherwise noted (very little baihe is licensed so far). I've included Chinese titles and linked novelupdates for each title when I was able to find them, but sometimes publishers change the original titles so much that I can't track them down, apologies.
Basically: this is everything I know of as of April 12, 2024. There might be more. I tried.
For the latest danmei news, Danmeinews.com is a great resources.
Note that some of this information was sourced from this Carrd, last updated in March 2023.

All these titles are manhua!

-
Honorable Mentions:
There are a handful of titles I know of that are official translations of C Novels, where the C Novels aren't danmei or baihe but are often treated as adjacent within fandom (as in: I've seen people shipping characters from them, lol). I've included two above under the entry for titles from Aloha Comics (Link Click and Nirvana in Fire) and here are a couple others I currently know of:
The Grave Robbers' Chronicles (Daomu Biji) by Nanpai Sanshu (six volumes are available in English from Things Asian Press
The Legend of the Condor Heroes (She Diao Yingxiong Chuan) by Jin Yong from St. Martin's Press
Romance of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguo Yanyi), attributed to Luo Guanzhong, available in multiple translations
The Seven Heroes and Five Gallants (Zonglie Xiayi Chuan), attributed to Shi Yukun, there are two translations to English listed at the linked Wikipedia page
Note that to the best of my knowledge both of these are considered very substandard translations. I've personally read the official DMBJ translations and... yeah... and I've heard the LOCH translation is also mediocre.
I will add to the "Honorable Mentions" list if I find any other more mainstream titles with official translations.
Please don't come at me for including a couple classics. The characters shippable, what can I do? I've written fic for Romance of the Three Kingdoms...
-
A handful of other licenses are mentioned on the Carrd I linked at the beginning of this post; I have no idea the status of those titles and wasn't able to find information on them while putting together this post other than what was listed on that Carrd, so I've omitted them.
As a final note, I've personally purchased from every printer on this list EXCEPT Monogatari Novels (I'm holding off because of the controversy and will see how things play out) and Chaleuria (which I vaguely knew existed but nothing beyond that).
Seven Seas translation varies but the editing is general strong and the editions are sturdy and nice. Extras that have come with final volumes are lovely. I am buying literally everything they publish except for You've Got Mail, due to information about the author that was shared with me that the author is a transphobe. Note that Kinnporsche by Daemi is not danmei as it's Thai (and I've heard unsavory things about the author - I don't have a link for that as the information was shared with me on Discord, and I encourage you to do your own research rather than taking my word for it). No judgement if you make a different choice than me, to be clear, I'm just sharing the information I have and why I personally am not buying the books). Note that Seven Seas isn't without controversy, especially for treating their contractors poorly resulting in them unionizing. Some people have also been unhappy with the fidelity of their translations compared to the original Chinese (I've been satisfied personally but ymmv).
Peach Flower House has inconsistent inconsistent editing quality, but the books are very readable, and I'm excited that they're working with translators such as E. Danglars. I haven't bought any of their special editions so can't speak to their extras, but I've bought all their print translations and will continue to do so going forward.
I just got my first title from Via Lactea last week and finished reading it on Sunday, and the translation read very well and there were minimal errors. It also came with a bundle of cute extras, which I wasn't expecting and pleased, and writing this post has caused me to cave and spend $150 to buy the rest of their books. Thank you, tax refund. (Should I spend this money? No. Did I anyway? ...)
No Rosmei titles have actually shipped yet, so I can't speak to their quality, though the previews they've shared on social media (as outlined here, for example) read decently and I'm optimistic. The cover art is also lovely, and they've been communicative and responsive, for example they've already issued a statement related to a recent controversy over perceived poor marketing for At the World's Mercy.
Tl:dr, the above is absolutely everything I personally know about mlm and wlw Chinese novels and manhua that have been licensed for English publication. I hope it helps someone.
Now go forth, and buy some books!

阿弥陀佛. Universe started together when your xin (mind) is shakened. Yi than zhin too many 32,000. Xing fu yuan man. It is created even before any time and space. Alaya consciousness is created. How big? Bigger than the universe, it is zhe xin. Lun wui is to tai yim and change it. Meng sarm kin seng (sarm leng) where u have chap seng (dirty, tham chan chi, ko sarng wud too use to it this turned into wisdom, chi seng sickness). Sarng meng is sarng wud. Zhuan seng to become zhi wai. Fui fuk zhi seng, seng fat (cheng fo). Close to Enlightenment which with no differentiation. Mona become pin deng. Xin fo peng deng. That is the state of Buddhahood. Time & space came from one source. Me but still got fa sheng. Western Pureland is created by it too of Amitabha Buddha but it does not have 'zhi xin dong nian'. Non differentiation mind. The truth behind the tooth. The papaya croach story. When you let go of yourself, you got the world. When you let go of this world, you will get Western Pureland. Tree is life. Today is world environmental day, Jun 5th 2022. A tree is a universe. Money is printed from destroying a universe (tree) and then used in ways to cause more harm to the planet, the universe. Change it dont chase for it, seek and manage. Everything you do, everyone you see, dharma help you see the truth all attachments become saha world, then suffering arise, everything is Amituofo, the way you see the world becomes Amituofo. Ching jing peng deng sure reborn in Pureland. Practicex3. Zhen fa meng ru lai (Kuan yin aeons ago. Kuan ser yin ru lai teaches Kuan Ser Yin pusa the disciple, er kern zhui ling). My true nature is the Buddha. Wui guai zhi sing. Dharma is the cure sickness (Fart). Li ( bu shen bu miet) ser jen, xiang sher jia. Xin is chen, ser is jia. True or false also dont be too attached. Bu ji xing dong nien jiu ser the tips. With a sickness, ji, xing, dong, nien, fern, bie, zhe, zhuo (6 gen). Karn po. Yi cher yau wei fart, sern miet fa. Mei lai mei chu, sam mo se de mei you. Wo you 3 bao. Ching jing peng den. Arhat avhieve zeng jue. Pusa practice Peng deng xin to achieve chen deng zeng jue, Buddha chen wu sarng chen deng jue. Ser jie wan wu ser yi ti. This body is my manifestation. Dont do anything in saha world that makes you attached too much that you couldnt let go and seek rebirth in Western Pureland. Wu xin is Amituofo. Amituofo is my xin. Every ben xin is Amituofo. You seek yourself. Let yourself be found, not search outside but inside. The world is using a piece of paper to weigh everything, cert for qualification, paper owns land and houses. A piece of paper becomes everything, your self worth as light as a piece of paper....Jing zhen guo. Fang xia chai but ku, let go and burden's gone...Compassion is your focus, is your life. If no compassion then only left unhappiness and sorrow. Happiness in Saha world is the start of unhappiness. Go back to the neutral state is happiness, no unhappiness. You need to peace down, silent give rise to wisdom. My heart is my way place. Wo xin ju shi tao chang. Fo got 52 jie ti. Let go, become Arhat, let go become Pusa and let go become Buddha.
Chaotu prayers / retreat: Lunch by 1.30 pm on Pusa 8 kwan zhai day. Note: June 21st in china kills dog, Korea, Vietnam, use zhi lig, fa lig, fo lig. Then, it will combined at a great strength to change the world. 30 days be vegan. House concept, a house is like a cell. No matter how beautiful, you are trapped within. Your body is already like a house. Ur problem is u let go of ur house and came here, that is the dna effect of leaving Chn to Msia living a house there like grandpa.

You need to nian fo then can achieve fo
But now, you only nian 6 realm of rebirth how to achieve fo?
You are fo why cannot become fo?
Becos u never let go of the 6 realm or rebirth activities. Greed, anger, ignorance (3 poisons need to let go 1st)
All ppl are the creation of their minds.
Then can u nian fo (real valuable activities the rests are useless)? All problems are due to cant let go of afflictions. Zhe xin give rise to Amituofo & Western Pureland. All existence is creation of the mind. How to let go of everything and seek rebirth in Pureland. All existence, this Saha world is creation of the mind / messy thoughts. Our body is our own manifestation of the (our) mind. Let go of the thoughts and mind, it will take u to next creation / manifestation. Practice but forget don't put practice into the mind. Be forgetful but only remember where you are going, Western Pureland so keep that in mind. When the Prince, Siddhartha Gautama bids farewell to his father saying:
Even my love for Yasodhara…and my son…
cannot remove the pain I feel.
For I know that they too will have to suffer,
grow old…and die.
Like you, like me, like us all.
Yes. We must all die…
and be reborn…
and die again,
and be reborn and die,
and be reborn and die again.
No man can ever escape that curse.
Then that…is my task. I…will lift that curse.
At the moment of the attainment of awakening, the Buddha uttered the following:
"I travelled through the rounds of countless births through the cycle of existence,
Seeking but not finding the builder of this house [of 'self'] and again and again, I faced the suffering of new birth.
O Housebuilder, you have now been seen,
You shall not build a house again for me.
Your beams [defilements] have now been broken, Your ridgepole [ignorance] utterly shattered.
My mind has attained the supreme
'nibbana' ('blowing out')
Realised is the unconditioned, Achieved is the end of craving."
- Siddhartha Gautama
(Dhammapada Verses 153 and 154)
When attachment arises in our mind it does not feel harmful; on the contrary it usually feels beneficial. Therefore, it is important to contemplate repeatedly the faults of attachment and to recognize it as a delusion whose only function is to cause us harm.
Remember one cannot trust what you sees because ur eyes are imperfecg and cannot see the absolute truth. This organ limitation is bounded by it creations. It is created from delusion. What is deluded cannot revealed it undeluded nature. Just like the blind leading the blind...it is still within the same state which is called suffering. When u see without seeing and when u have sight of not using any organ is when the truth would be revealed and the absolute truth is the state overcoming delusion or samsara, the true escape of realm of rebirths. Is when u crossed the other shore. The state of relization, Buddhood, the enlightment.

Miraculous Ladybug Fic Recs!
I keep going looking for these and realising there aren’t loads so, while this doesn’t fix my problem, hopefully this helps you if you’re looking for some good fics!
For some reason, I’ve had a bit of a thing for longer fics recently so most of these are over 10k. Hopefully, there’s enough of a mix that you can find something you like!
Key
* - unfinished
M - mature
☆ - favourite
Arranged in alphabetical order.
Allez Savoir Pourquoi by Yilena | 30k - M
After seeing her soulmate for years without knowing his identity, Marinette bumps into him at a newly opened cat café. When he confesses that he needs help, she agrees to work for him on a whim. AU.
breathe— by frostedpuffs | 22k
Adrien had always been fond of Marinette. That was a truth he held close to his heart.
When he nearly meets his fate on an otherwise peaceful autumn afternoon, his world is thrown into typhoon of muddled thoughts and vague memories. Though questions burn at his mind as he lies awake, one particular detail stays constant: a familiar face in the crowd that's been by his side every step of the way.
It's a long road to recovery. But with his partner close, what's there to be afraid of?
☆ A Co-meow-dy of Errors by othellia | 31k
While chasing down a thief, an ancient artifact causes Adrien and Alya to swap bodies. Desperate to keep it a secret from Ladybug, the two decide to try and live life as the other until they can re-track down the thief and switch back.
Things... don't exactly go according to plan.
My thoughts: I read this one on the way to school and boy was it hard to keep from smiling while reading it
☆ Chasing the C/h/atwalk by Inkkerfuffle | 112k
Paris. The city of lights, love and fashion. Follow the progress of Marinette Dupain Cheng as she enters the extremely competitive world of Reality television for a chance to be the winner of Project Runway: France.
My thoughts: this one is literally my all-time MLB fanfic. If you’re willing to read a longer one, then this one is definitely definitely worth it!
☆ Cheaters by 11JJ11 | 8.7k
Alya discovers Adrien kissing Ladybug, and she's not happy that he's cheating on her best friend. Adrien knows that he can't reveal his Lady's identity, and he just might have to take the fall– but he's not going down alone.
My thoughts: Now with an extra 2nd part that makes it even better!
Checking Sources by DOMinMatrix | 10k
Marinette is having a rough day when that night, when she's supposed to have a solo patrol, Chat Noir shows up asking a single question: "Have you revealed your identity to anyone, accidentally or otherwise?"
Derrière l’ecran - ENGLISH TRANSLATION by Mindell | 6.6k
Little virtual conversations between Ladybug and Chat Noir, after which Chat Noir was successful in convincing his co-teammate that it would be very practical for them to have the possibility to contact her when they are not transformed into their hero alter-egos. The Internet is there to guarantee anonymity-- something so dear to the heart of the young girl…
☆ Fermeture by KarmaHope | 9.4k
The hardest part of being a superhero is no longer being a superhero. It’s been five years since Marinette last saw Tikki; since she last saw Chat Noir; and she can’t take it anymore. A reunion/reveal fic.
My thoughts: this one almost made me cry but it was also so good. I couldn’t not put it on this list
fierce competition by Bumblewyn | 3.3k
"I have a problem," Ladybug laments as she theatrically drapes herself across one of the Eiffel Tower's support beams.
"What is it?" Chat Noir asks, curiously looking up at her slumped form.
"I think the boy I like has a crush on me."
"Hold on," Chat says, holding up a finger to halt her as he frowns intensely.
They stare at each other in silence for a couple of seconds.
Chat shrugs and drops his finger. "I give up," he declares. "I have no idea how that could possibly be a problem."
"Because he's got a crush on Ladybug! Only on Ladybug!"
My thoughts: I just love their relationship in this. This one is short but sweet
give ‘em pumpkin to talk about by alooxsnaps | 3.8k
“Wow Marinette, great Ladybug costume!”
Alya’s words reverberated in her head like someone kept hitting pause and rewinding the moment over and over again, until sheer, unadulterated panic swallowed her whole.
She wasn’t IN a costume. She was transformed. ...As LADYBUG.
~
Alya throws a Halloween party and chaos ensues.

In the Middle of a Very Happy Ending by ProbablyVoldemort | 4.3k
Senior Theme Week is fast approaching. But what happens when there's too many real akumas for Marinette to make her and Adrien's Akuma Day costumes?
☆ Paws Fur Coffee by Zaphirite | 32k
He was so sure that Ladybug would already push him off a rooftop if she knew his civilian identity worked at a café called “Paws Fur Coffee” of all names (the owner is a dog person, but he’ll take it), but his flub on the chalkboard menu just topped it all off.
His neat handwriting read back to him: “Chai Noir”.
(In which Adrien Agreste has some really cool ideas about the special drink of the week and gets to know a regular customer.)
☆ Pick-Up and Chase by SKayLanphear | 30k
After she accidentally trips into Adrien and apologizes about "falling for him," Marinette learns that he's no match for cheesy pick-up lines--whether they were unintended or not. And while she finds it flattering that he turns into a flustered mess with only a few words, Marinette comes to regret making him uncomfortable. That is, until she learns he's Chat Noir. At which point the phrase "just deserts" becomes a permanent fixture in her everyday plans.
A story in which Adrien is flustered, Marinette is smooth as glass at dropping lines, and Chat Noir gets the romance he was always asking for--even if he doesn't quite know how to handle it.
My thoughts: this one was hilarious and had me screaming a couple of times
Poster Boy by Amateum
Ladybug let out a relieved sigh and slumped against the wall surrounding the bed they had landed on. “That was close.” She looked over to where Chat was sat on the other side of the bed.
He glanced around the darkened room, taking in the details. He loved having night vision. “How did you know where the key to the house was?” He asked, turning back to Ladybug.
“Because…” An uncomfortable look crossed her face, followed by resignation. “Because this is my room, Chat.”
“Really?!” He immediately perked up and peered over the edge of the bed to get a better look around. Unfortunately, her lack of night vision doesn’t stop Ladybug from finding his ear-the human one- and using it to yank him back to the top of the bed. “Chaton!”
“Right. Secret identity. Sorry,” he said sheepishly. After a beat he said, “Hey, why do you have a collage of Adrien Agreste pictures?”
Shellter Chat by Bridgetinerabbit | 58k
A peek inside Adrien's school bag gives Nino some very unexpected insight as to what makes his good friend tick, but leaves him in a very delicate position. He never expected to strike a deal with the Kwami of Destruction, but now he and Plagg are working together to relieve some of Adrien's (and Chat Noir's) burdens for his own good. But being Adrien's guardian angel isn't as easy as it seems; other secret identities start falling apart, and there's no telling where the falling dominoes will stop.
Sixty Minutes by mikochan_noda, peonydee | 13k
Alya Césaire, award-winning pursuer of truth, is honored with an intimate interview with Ladybug and Chat Noir. However, she doesn't count on finding out certain things that are making her regret asking in the first place.

(1:14 pm) So you never told me how you planned to make Gabriel Agreste cry.
(1:20 pm) Oh my god, how drunk was I last night?!
(1:22 pm) They live.
(1:23 pm) Barely.
(1:24 pm) How do I know you again?
(1:24 pm) I don’t think you do? I’m Wrong Number. You were texting me your New Year’s Resolution earlier.
(1:25 pm) …I’m too hungover to deal with this right now.
(1:26 pm) Well who’s fault is that?
(1:40 pm) …Hello?
(2:01 pm) Well this was fun.
(Marinette sends a text to the wrong number, and things progress from there until it becomes the right one.)
My thoughts: I’m an absolute sucker for texting fics and this one is no exception!

When the two heroes discover that Hawkmoth is Gabriel Agreste, Chat Noir throws him out the window for everyone to see.
Adrien Agreste comes to live with the Dupain-Chengs.

Mulan And The Chinese Women Warriors of History and Legend
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
While American audiences know the story of Mulan through the 1998 animated Disney film and the upcoming live-action reboot, they may not know that the films are based on a Chinese legend. Hua Mulan is a legendary figure whose story was first told in “Ballad of Mulan,” a folksong first transcribed in the 6th century. In the legend, Mulan is a girl who disguises herself as a man and goes to war in place of her father. Mulan fights for many years as part of the army and, after earning much honor and gifts from the emperor, returns home to her family. Only then does she reveal her gender identity.
While Mulan may be the most familiar of woman Chinese warriors (at least to American audiences), she’s only one in a rich history of historical and legendary female heroes in Chinese history. With the live-action adaptation of Mulan releasing on Disney+ this Friday, here are some of the highlights you might encounter when brushing up on your Chinese legends and history—figures who perhaps warrant their own feature film adaptation…
Xun Guan
At thirteen, Xun Guan was already an accomplished martial artist and tactician. Her father, Xun Song, was the governor of Xianyang in the late 200s A.D. One night, when the castle was under siege, Xun Song was ready to lead a force against the opposing soldiers. Convinced that her father leaving the castle would be bad for morale, she proposed that instead she lead a group of elite soldiers out to defeat the enemy. Even though she was only thirteen, Xun Gun had her father’s trust, and he sent her out. Once outside the walls, Xun Guan immediately spotted a weak spot in the enemy’s position, and she and her troops were triumphant against them, successfully allowing the castle to hold out until more reinforcements could arrive.
Pingyang
During much of Pingyang’s lifetime in the early 600s, the emperor, Yangdi, was incompetent, greedy, and vain—he’s become a villain of Chinese history. Pingyang was the daughter of military commander Li Yuan, and became the wife of Chai Shao, the leader of Yangdi’s palace guard. Yangdi decided that Li Yuan was just too good at his job, so he trumped up false charges and had Li Yuan arrested, only to realize that Li Yuan was the only person who could protect Yangdi from people who actually were plotting against him. Yangdi released Li Yuan, but the damage was done: now Li Yuan wanted Yangdi dead, as well. As Li Yuan rebelled, Chai Shao and Pingyang had to decide how both of them could safely support her father; Chai Shao left first to openly join Li Yuan’s rebellion, and Pingyang later escaped on her own, braving the danger because she was confident she could hide in plain sight.
She journeyed back to her family’s lands and threw open the larders, endearing the people to her and recruiting the first members of what would become known as the Army of the Lady, or the Woman’s Army. As the war continued, Pingyang made alliances and built an army 70,000 strong, keeping them all under a strict code of conduct the prohibited looting, raping, and pillaging. Where the army went, they brought food with them to feed the locals, so they were greeted as liberators. Yangdi dismissed Pingyang as a threat (she was just a woman, after all!), until it was far too late; her forces were unhindered by Yangdi’s troops, and they joined up with Li Yuan and Chai Shao for the final attack on the capital—and, in their victory, the establishment of the Tang Dynasty.
Wu Zetian
In the late 600s, China had a woman emperor. Depending on which historical records you read (the sources tend to be very biased against or very biased toward the empress), she lied, cheated, and murdered her way to the throne—and did more of the same to stay there. She started her imperial career as the favorite concubine of Emperor Taizong. When he died, she married his son, the new emperor, Gaozong. Some sources imply that a romance was going on long before the old emperor’s death; others suggest she was so good at courtly intrigue that Gaozong kept her by his side and ruled equally with her, relying on her political savvy. After Gaozong’s death, their children were in line for the throne; Wu poisoned the eldest, exiled the second, and had plans to manipulate the third and continue to rule. When that son showed too much backbone (and made too many other courtiers angry), she had him deposed, replaced him with his younger brother, and then eventually deposed that child, too, taking on the mantle of rule for herself. Though her rule as emperor was short, she made a number of state improvements in religion, literature, and education—and some historians credit those changes with still having an influence on modern Chinese scholarship.
Liang Hongyu
Although she started her career as a musician, Liang Hongyu ended up using her instrumental skills for a more military purpose. She is said to have met her husband, military officer Han Shizhong, when she was performing as a singer and drummer for his troop. They married in 1121, and she later fought by his side as the army pushed back an invasion by the Huns. The drumming comes in because, during that era, commands were sent to different units in the military through flags and drum signaling. Her drummed orders (and the strategy she came up with) are credited with leading a group of only 8,000 soldiers to victory against a force of 100,000 Hun warriors.
Qin Liangyu
Fighting against the Manchus was a family experience for Qin Liangyu, who went to war alongside her brothers in the early 1600s. When the Manchus—from beyond the Great Wall—threatened Beijing, Qin Liangyu led troops from Sichuan to defend the capital. But there were also rebel forces within the Ming Dynasty, and Qin Liangyu fought against them as well, alongside her son, Ma Xianglin. There’s not just one story of Qin Liangyu’s successes; she fought so many successful campaigns that the Chongzhen Emperor appointed her Crown Prince’s Guardian and a title equivalent to marquis. When the Ming Dynasty fell during Qin Liangyu’s later years, she remained in control of an area of Sichuan, where she helped settle 100,000.
Wu Mei
Women in martial arts are common enough in modern schools (and modern film), but they’ve been around much longer! In fact, the founder of the famous kung fu style Wing Chun was one of the legendary five elders of Shaolin Martial Arts, was a woman. Buddhist nun Wu Mei (also known as Ng Mui) survived the destruction of the Shaolin Temple of Dengfeng during the Qing Dynasty. The shaolin practitioners had been accused of anti-Qing activities, and the army went to destroy them for it. In the bloody battle that followed, only the five known as the five elders survived. They’re credited with spreading martial arts across China, and Wu was said to have invented some of the most important styles. Her Wing Chun is possibly the best known of these, named after Wu’s first student—also a woman—Yim Wing Chun.
Ching Shih
In the early 1800s, when the Golden Age of piracy had already faded in the Caribbean, a pirate queen was sailing her fleet, commanding as many as 80,000 outlaws (sources differ), in the South China Sea. History has forgotten her birth name—Ching Shih translates to “widow of Ching”—but not her amazing deeds, which have put her down in the history books as one of the most successful pirates in history. Ching Shih worked as a prostitute until she married the notorious pirate Cheng I (who was reportedly impressed with her shrewd business sense), who had united different factions of pirates into his Red Flag Fleet.
Legends say that she required half the fleet to belong to her as a condition of the marriage, and when Cheng I died six years later, she took control of the entire fleet. She kept order by enforcing a strict pirate code, and though the Qing dynasty officials, Portuguese Navy, and the East India Company all tried to defeat the fleet, she ruled the waves, only ending her piratical activities when she was offered amnesty from the Chinese government. She lived until she was 69, and she’s the inspiration behind Mistress Ching, one of the Pirate Lords in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
Yu Shu Lien and Jen Yu
These two are completely fictional, but as far as pop culture goes, these women warriors cannot be left out. In the film Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Jen Yu (played by Zhang Ziyi) is a teenager and an amazing martial artist who has been secretly trained by the villainous Jade Fox, under the nose of Jen’s father, the governor. Yu Shu Lien (played by Michelle Yoeh) owns and runs a private security company; she’s close friends with Li Mu Bai, and she agrees to go with him to take his sword, the Green Destiny, as a gift to a benefactor. When the Green Destiny is stolen, they track it to Governor Yu’s mansion. Eventually, Jen Yu is discovered as the thief, but her youth and talent make both Li Mu Bai and Yu Shu Lien sympathetic to her, even after they realize she’s been taught by Li Mu Bai’s enemy, Jade Fox. Later in the film, Yu Shu Lien tries to teach Jen Yu a lesson, and the two have one of the best choreographed multi-weapon epic martial arts movie fights in the history of martial arts movies.
Aero
Another fictional Chinese hero is Aero, Marvel’s manhua series star. When she’s not being a superhero, Lei Ling is an architect in Beijing. When the monsters start coming, however, she takes to the sky as Aero, the protector of her city. Using powers of manipulating winds and air currents, she struggles with the destruction caused by supervillains, because her passion is for building and creating, not for seeing things torn down. The character was first introduced in the Agents of Atlas comic, but she started starring in her own ongoing comic series in 2019. It’s too much to hope that we’ll get a hint of her in the MCU’s upcoming Shang Chi, but the ongoing series, written by Zhou Liefen with stories by Alyssa Wong and Greg Pak, and art by Keng and Pop Mhan, is definitely worth picking up.
Honorable Mention: Cassandra Cain
I didn’t know this when I watched Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), but Cassandra Cain—the thief kid who swallows the film’s macguffin—has a long and awesome history in DC comics. She’s a first generation Chinese American; her mother, Lady Shiva, is a dangerous assassin who fled from her village, and her father, David Cain, is one of Ra’s al Ghul’s henchmen. It’s not a love match—he blackmails her into having his child, and then he raises Cassandra to be the perfect assassin and bodyguard. But when she was just eight years old, her empathy made her reject a path of killing, and she ends up in Gotham, where she saves Commissioner Gordon’s life and becomes Batgirl. In fact, Cassandra Cain was the first Batgirl to have her own standalone series run (in 2000). Eventually, after a series of twists and turns, she takes a gig working as one of the global team of Batmen as the Black Bat, where she fights crime in Hong Kong. It’s hard to imagine the Birds of Prey version matching up, but I’d love to see that character in more DC movies!

0015: PRO-DEM. In one of the first results of the night, pro-democracy Civic Party candidate Joshua Li says on Facebook he has received over 4,000 votes, almost guaranteeing that he has taken the previously pro-Beijing seat in Mei Foo North constituency,  Sham Shui Po.

0202: PRO-DEM. The Democratic Party's Lo Kin-hei has retained his seat in Lei Tung (II) constituency in Hong Kong Island South.
0204: PRO-BEIJING. Pro-Beijing heavyweight Starry Lee has retained her seat in Tokwawan North, narrowly evading a challenge by pro-democracy disqualified legislator "Long Hair" Leung Kwok-hung. This area is one of the most staunchly “blue” areas and there are very few who can really fight against the DAB leader. Personally think it was a wise choice to sic Long Hair on him because Long Hair has the experience given his LegCo experience and grassroots work, yet also prevents the pro-dem faction from wasting one important current LegCo member
0205: PRO-DEM. Democrat Andrew Chiu - whose ear was bitten off by an assailant with a knife last month - has won in Taikoo Shing on Hong Kong Island.
0209: PRO-DEM. Democratic Party legislator Roy Kwong - popular in recent months for his assistance to protesters - has won in the North District Council. Pro-Beijing legislator Horace Cheung has lost his seat in the Central and Western District Council.
0214: PRO-DEM. Artist Clarisse Yeung has retained her seat in Tai Hang constituency. Having been one of only two non-pro-Beijing district councillors in Wan Chai from 2015-19, she is set to lead a pro-democracy majority district council.
0218: PRO-DEM. Chan Ka-yi - protege of legislator Au Nok-hin who has helped her to become his successor - has won in the Lei Tung (I) constituency in Hong Kong Island South.
0219: PRO-DEM. In Shek Yam constituency, North District, Democratic Party legislator Andrew Wan has retained his district council seat.
0222: PRO-DEM. The sweeping extent of Occupy student activist Lester Shum's victory in the Tsuen Wan District Council is revealed, as figures show he has beaten the longstanding incumbent pro-Beijing councillor by 5,113 votes to 1,974.
0224: PRO-DEM. At City One, Shatin - which attracted media earlier for its very high voter turnout - the pro-democracy Civic Party's Wong Man-huen has beaten her pro-Beijing opponent by over 2,000 votes.
0229: PRO-DEM. In Sai Kung's rural Outlying Islands, newcomer democrat Debby Chan has declared victory in a previously uncontested constituency.
0230: PRO-DEM. Another pro-demoracy newcomer to win in Sai Kung is the Labour Party's Stanley Ho in Pak Sha Wan. Ho was thrust into the media spotlight after being attacked by assailants in September.
0240: PRO-DEM. Janelle Leung Hoi-ching - another extradition bill-inspired newcomer candidate who had been attacked by assailants - has beaten the incumbent pro-Beijing district councillor in Kwun Tong's Yuet Wah constituency.
0242: PRO-DEM. Democratic Party veterans and ex-legislators Kam Nai-wai (Central and Western) and Sin Chung-kai (Kwai Tsing) have retained their district council seats.
0248: PRO-DEM. Medical doctor Kwong Po-yin - formerly part of localist group Youngspiration alongside Yau Wai-ching - has retained her seat in Whampoa West.
0249: PRO-DEM. Democratic Party veteran legislator James To has retained his seat in Olympic, Yau Tsim Mong.
0252: PRO-DEM. Cheung Chau Island has been taken by pro-democracy basketball referee Leung Kwok-ho.
0254: PRO-DEM. Pro-Beijing legislators Alice Mak in Kwai Tsing's Wai Ying constituency, and Holden Chow in Lantau Island's Tung Chung South constituency, have both been beaten by pro-democracy challengers for their respective district council seats, reports NowTV.
02558: PRO-DEM. In Aberdeen, Hong Kong Island, independent democrat Angus Wong - supported in his campaign by musicians and artists Denise Ho, Gregory Wong and Deanie Ip - has won.
0304: PRO-BEIJING. Pro-Beijing legislator Wilson Or is one of the few to retain his District Council seats, after being People Power's Tam Tak-chi in Kwun Tong's Kwong Tak constituency.
0305: PRO-BEIJING. Despite many members of his legislative winning, reports suggest that pro-democracy legislator Eddie Chu has lost his district council seat in Pat Heung South, Yuen Long.
0307: After his district council win, pro-democracy legislator Andrew Wan told InMedia that it was the most solemn electoral victory of his life. He said he urgently wants to meet Carrie Lam, rescue those trapped in PolyU, and hold police accountable for brutality.
0316: PRO-DEM. Unofficial counts online suggest that the pro-democracy camp has won overwhelming victories in many districts including Tuen Mun, Wong Tai Sin and Tai Po - with some unverified rumours suggesting almost clean sweeps.
0320: PRO-DEM. Newly-elected pro-democracy district councillor Jimmy Sham - of Lek Yuen, Shatin - has called on other newcomers to join him in signing a petition calling on the police to end the siege of PolyU and allow those trapped inside to leave peacefully.
0327: PRO-DEM. Demosisto's Tiffany Yuen has won a seat in Tin Wan, Hong Kong Island South. Yuen's community work in Tin Wan - as part of diqualified lawmaker Nathan Law's team - in 2017.
0328: PRO-DEM. Another former assistant to a legislator disqualified due to the 2016-17 "Oathgate" scandal - Napo Wong - has won in Sai Ying Pun, Hong Kong Island West.
0335: PRO-BEIJING. Pro-democracy newcomer in Nam Cheong Central, Sham Shui Po - Jessica Lam Sin-tung, who ran a bar frequented by journalists - has lost to her pro-Beijing rival by a mere 102 votes.
0341: PRO-DEM. Pro-Beijing legislator Michael Luk Chung-hung of the Federation of Trade Unions has lost his district council seat in Yuen Long.
0345: With just half of the 452 constituencies having announced their results, Stand News reports that the pro-democracy camp has so far obtained a landslide 197 seats compared to the pro-Beijing camp's 24. The pro-democracy camp only won just over 100 seats in 2015.
0359: PRO-DEM. Explicitly pro-protest candidate Lucifer Siu has won by a narrow margin in Mong Kok North, a constituency that has seen dozens of arrests over the past months due to protests at Mong Kok Police Station.
0400: Stand News reports as of 4am that the pro-democracy camp has won at least 240 confirmed District Council seats - over half of the 452 total elected seats - compared with the pro-Beijing camp's 28 confirmed seats.
0402: PRO-DEM. Stand News has reported that the pro-democracy camp has made a clean sweep, winning all 19 seats in the Tai Po District Council.
0404: PRO-DEM. In Shek Tong Tsui near HKU, democrat Sam Yip - previously an assistant to legislator Au Nok-hin - has reversed the 2015 election results by beating incumbnt pro-Beijing district councillor Chan Choi-hi.
0407: PRO-DEM. In Yuen Long's Shap Pat Heung West, independent democrat Szeto Pok Man has beaten well-known rural strongman Leung Fuk-yuen.
0415: Pro-democracy camp officially takes over half of District Council, 227 vs 027.
0420: PolyU. A small number of people remain trapped inside PolyU - besieged into its ninth day - amid the pro-democracy camp's massive gains in the District Council elections.
0423: PRO-BEIJING. Independent pro-democracy candidate Dream Law Ting-fai, running in Yuen Long, says on Facebook that he has lost in his Ping Shan constituency by a mere one vote.
0430: PRO-BEIJING. Independent democratic social worker Hendrick Lui - arrested on Saturday for "obstructing police" clearing the Fanling Lennon Walls - has lost despite receiving some 2,600 votes. A fellow Neo-Democrat received 1,100 votes. However, a pro-Beijing candidate received over 3,000.
0434: Alvin Yeung, head of the mainstream pro-democracy Civic Party, says all party members who have been elected in the district elections will pay a visit to the Polytechnic University on Monday to assist the people trapped inside.
0542: Pro-democracy camp officially exceeds 300 seats at 301 vs 035.
0604: The man who vowed to run naked in Victory Park if Junius Ho loses is now doing so.
0617: After Tai Po, Wong Tai Sin becomes the 2nd district where pro-democracy candidates take all seats.
0642: 343 to 41 now. Pro-dem camp also already secured a majority in 16 out of all 18 districts so far. With only Kowloon City district and Outlying Islands district remaining. Outlying islands district has 8 ex-officio seats so it's firmly under pro-Beijing camp control. Kowloon City district is the only remaining one that's uncertain whether pro-democracy camp will win a majority.
0656: 349 to 44 currently. 1 more seat to hit 350.
0701: 351 to 44. Just pushed past 350.
0821: 365 to 51.
0837: 376 to 52 now. Can't hit 400 (not enough seats left) but it's definitely gonna push past 380.
0849: Just went over 380. 11 seats left to go. So we will likely close with pro-democracy camp getting 380-ish seats and pro-Beijing camp with 60-ish seats.
0907: 387 to 59, with one seat left. That seat is Lam Tin, a source of kerfuffle last night. Meanwhile the pro-dem has gotten the majority at Kowloon City.
At least 2 District Councils 100% pro-dem: Wong Tai Sin (25 seats) and Tai Po (19 seats). A prospect previously almost unimaginable. The other ensured pro-democracy majorities are Tsuen Wan, Wanchai, Central & Western, and Southern.7 pro-China LegCo members have lost seats, including Junius Ho, Holden Chow, Horace Cheung, Alice Mak, Michael Tien, Vincent Cheng. The only 2 big pro-democracy losses are Long Hair (kinda expected, a deliberate strategic move to set him up against Starry Lee) and Eddie Chu (kinda unexpected but also expected? esp given all the Yuen Long craziness and the staunchly pro-China attitudes of villagers). Civic Party won 32 of 36 seats it contested when it previously only had 12 DC seats.
0909: A referendum on the protests, the gov and the police. Results: HK ppl are pro-protester, pro-democracy, anti-gov and anti-police. Pro-democracy candidates have won 86.2% gaining control of 17 of the 18 District Councils and tripling their seats from around 124 to 387. 2019 District Council elections, Pro-dem: 388 Pro-Beijing: 059 2015 elections, Pro-dem: 125 Pro-Beijing: 299 In the past, HKers didnt care about DC elections as fewer than 50% voted for what they considered as powerless positions. This time, 71% of registered voters (nearly 3 million) voted even if the results will have little immediate impact, showing a deep desire for real democracy.
Ballot counting procedures in Hong Kong’s Lam Tin constituency are in doubt after the pro-democracy candidate complained that problematic ballots had been accepted as valid, causing him to lose the race. Fung Tak-sum, an independent candidate, was running against Kan Ming-tung of the pro-Beijing Federation of Trade Unions (FTU) in Sunday’s District Council election race. Fung told reporters that he lost by a margin of 50 votes, but there were over 100 problematic ballots. Fung won 4,030 votes, whilst Kan received 4,080 votes. Fung said the problematic ballots considered valid included those with two to three ticks inside the box, ticks being stamped on the FTU’s logo, or ticks on Kan’s face as shown on the ballot.“There were never any guidelines saying that these ballots should be counted as valid,” Fung said. Fung said he asked for a review of the ballots after it was announced he had lost, but the Electoral Affairs Commission (EAC) – an independent body managing the election – said it was not possible. He will consider filing an election petition.
1300: Ballot counting finally ends at around 15 hours after the election officially ended – with candidates requesting multiple recounts. Dozens of residents also gathered outside the counting station in protest.
Pro-democracy faction gains control of 17 out of the city’s 18 district councils following Sunday’s landslide election. The democrats now have majority control in almost all areas except the Islands District Council, where they won seven seats, and the pro-Beijing camp obtained 11 seats. Eight of the seats in the Islands District belong to ex-officio members, which were not included in Sunday’s election. It marks a landslide when compared to the last election in 2015, when the opposition camp failed to win any district council. The election saw a record high 71.2 per cent turnout rate with around 2.94 million people casting their ballot. The democrats won slightly less than 60 per cent of the votes but – as the election was conducted under the first-past-the-post system – they won close to 400 out of the 452 seats. The pro-Beijing camp only won 58 seats. With the overwhelming majority that democrats obtained, they will also gain all 117 of the District Councillor seats in the chief executive election committee because of its winner-takes-all rule. It will further increase the power of democrats inside the committee. The opposition camp are also destined to gain the District Council (First) seat in the Legislative Council next year, when the election takes place.
The pro-democracy Democratic Party is the biggest winner of the election, winning 91 seats after fielding 99 candidates. The pro-Beijing Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong, meanwhile, suffered a major defeat. The city’s largest pro-Beijing party fielded 181 candidates, but only won 21 seats. Party chair Starry Lee bowed in apology to voters who supported them on Monday. Lee said she had asked to resign from the party’s central committee, but the party did not accept her resignation. Lee highlighted cases of her party’s election materials being damaged and volunteers being afraid to canvass votes owing to harassment and doxxing by other people. Wait, you didn’t win and you can’t win, so you make pointed and woefully false remarks like this? The pro-Beijing Federation of Trade Unions, another major party, only obtained four seats after fielding 62 candidates. FTU President Stanley Ng said the result was not ideal, as he blamed the overall political environment.“The election was conducted under a very unfair situation – under a black terror and riotous environment,” he said, referring to violent protesters. Another dude making false accusations post-fact despite all sorts of evidence showing peaceful voting activity.
Scattered posts on Weibo following the news of pro-dem camp’s landslide victory: ”Only ppl who don’t live in HK will actually believe that the pro-establishment camp will win this time.” ”I heard that the silent majority in HK are patriotic, why is the election result like this?” “The public opinion is shown through their votes, not through certain tv stations.” “Since it’s one country two systems, we have to accept the public opinion of HK ppl and let their society decide their own path. If it works, perhaps we shld follow.” “The brain of those writing the script at state media must be splitting.” “This happens when ppl can vote, and this is why HK cannot implement universal suffrage.” “If pro-establishment wins, the silent majority spoke; if they lose, blame it on foreign interference.” “A short but telling ‘hoho’.” “Why is the gov not sending in the tanks instead and abolishing the one country two systems thing?” “I don’t understand the results...” Obviously the ones that question the CCP or support HK disappear asap. In the comments section of a post on Starry Lee vs Long Hai, a number of users struggle to understand why Long Hair is allowed to even run (duh it’s a democracy!) and how he managed to obtain >1500 votes. Others ask why Lee, even as the chairman of the biggest pro-gov pro-China party, wins only by a slim margin of 300 votes.
While pro-dem wins 86.2% of DC seats, they only did so with only 57% of overall vote (but also do note all the vote rigging and addition of pre-prepared votes, the existence of the older voters, and the fact that a big portion of youth still cannot vote), still a big margin but shows that the pro-Beijing with 41% are still an electoral force to reckon with. Pro-dems control the 117 DC votes for Chief Exec in 2022 selection but it does not really matter since pro-Beijing still have a hold over that rigged process. Pro-dems also fill the LegCo DC functional constituency seat, but numerically is also matters little to the pro-Beijing control of the functional constituencies e.g. business,
Pro-Beijing camp’s myth of the “silent majority” has been busted.
16yo boy convicted on 7 Nov of possession of offensive weapons sentenced today to a rehab centre. He had a laser pointer, an umbrella and a walking stick at a protest in Tuen Mun on 21 Sep. Denied bail, pending appeal. So far 3 citizens convicted (2 plead guilty) and 2 sentenced, 1 to community service, 1 to rehab centre. All young: 21, 12 and 16 (15 at time of commission of offense). Next sentencing on 19 Dec.
Statistics show that the pro-dem votes are much higher in districts that are the major sites of teargassing (e.g. see Wong Tai Sin).  All of the constituencies which had teargas (98): 92.9% (91 wins, 7 losses) Of these, those who are major teargas sites (30): 96.7% (29 wins, 1 loss) Constituencies not hit by teargas (354): 83.9% (297 wins, 57 losses) There is an obvious correlation btwn severity of teargassing and the amount of pro-dem votes.
Keeping with the HK tradition of no one ever resigning :)))) - Leaders of pro-Beijing DAB party bow to the public after only winning 21 seats of the 181 candidates it sent.
1310: Central. A guy is pouring champagne for everybody on the streets. (note: Champagne Guy makes further appearances in future lunchtime protests. His sunglasses and facial hair make him quite recognisable.)
1341: Central. Pro-Beijing lawmaker Regina Ip is being besieged and hounded as she travels through the streets of Central. Crowds chant “traitor of Hong Kong”.
1349: Central. More ppl join in the spontaneous champagne party.
Chief Exec Carrie Lam previously called protesters the “enemy of the people” and said that they “will never win”. The statement did not age well. Now, Lam issues a statement thanking the public for voting in the DC elections, and does not dare to come out to meet the press or whom she calls the “silent majority” following the pro-dem victory.
1600: PolyU. Newly elected pro-dem District Councillors plan to march to PolyU to call for break of the police siege instead of going on vote-thaking tours. After this 45 min gathering, 5 delegates will go and attempt to speak to police and those trapped inside, while the rest wil go to the Gov House to demand gov to call off the police, allow first-aiders into PolyU, and fulfill the 5 demands of the people.
1642: PolyU. District Councillor Paul Zimmerman says HK gov has failed ppl again and again in last 5 months and the ppl have spoken loud and clear as they did again on 24 Nov.
1653: PolyU. Citizens trapped inside ask ppl outside not to clash with police at this time. They say that the ppl inside are safe and that they are communicating with reps of the newly-elected district councillors.
1657: Tsim Sha Tsui. A group of newly-elected pro-dem District Councillors gathered at Centenary Garden are starting march to PolyU.
1708: Tsim Sha Tsui. Hundreds of citizens march with the district councillors and are now at the police cordon around PolyU, shouting, “Open the way, let us pass!”
Pro-Beijing lawmaker Regina Ip says her party lost because they had been “politicised”. Rubbish, all elections are political, what are you even saying??? xD She ain’t making sense.
2017: Hung Hom. Citizens stand outside PolyU and flash phone lights up at campus buildings to let those inside know they have not been forgotten.
2100: Tsim Sha Tsui. Hundreds have returned to the streets to chant pro-dem slogans despite pro-dem camp just winning the local elections.
2257: By night, crowds began to heckle the riot police cordon in Tsim Sha Tsui East. Meanwhile, Yaumatei-Tsimshatsui district commander Ho Yun-sing says police will soon send negotiators into the PolyU campus to persuade those remaining to leave.
2305: Yuen Long's Tin Heng Estate district councillor-elect Henry Wong called on crowds to protest calmly so as not to give police excuses to storm PolyU. However, more heckling broke out after rumours that an officer is having a wedding at nearby Hotel Icon.
26 Nov 2019 0011: PolyU. Five district councillors-elect alongside legislator Ip Kin-yuen have stayed to speak with the few remaining PolyU protesters for some six hours.
