Family names in France
I originally intended to answer someone else's post, and then I changed my mind, because this kind of info might be useful to writers or worldbuilders... I could be wrong, but who cares? (not me, apparently)
This post will not discuss the origin of family names but how we, in France, inherit ours.
First, let's talk about tradition.
Because France is and has been a patriarchal society for most of its history, women took their husband's name when marrying, and kids took their father's name.
In the last few generations, this tradition has started to change little by little, with law and jurisprudence catching up too. Since more women were working, some independently as doctors or lawyers (or other jobs too), women started to keep their own family name, as a way to not break their relationship with their clients (basically if their clients remembered only their name, they could still find them easily, and also recommend them to their friends).
Since it is now allowed for a man to take their wife's (or partner's) name, tradition could change in the future.
Now, the law is trickier.
First of all, legally, women and men never change name (or they have to file an official request for that). What I mean is, if I must file some official document requiring my name, I will first have to write my maiden name, and then, only as an option, I could write my partner's name, but only if we are married (if we're in another form of civil union, I cannot mention their name).
In case of divorce, the spouse who had taken upon using their partner's name should normally stop using it. Unless, said partner or a judge allows them to keep it (generally for professional reasons).
As for kids, if nothing is said when declaring their birth, they will automatically take their father's name. If the father is unknown, they will automatically take their mother's name. And in the rare instance, filiation cannot be established, with any parent, at the time of birth, a name will be given to them by the Administration. If the filiation can be established later, the name given by the Administration become a second name, and the child will take the name of their parent.
Parents can chose to give another name than the father's name to their kids. Other options are: the mother's name or both names (with or without an hyphen). The name chose for the first born will be the name for all siblings.
In the case of an adoption, the adopting parent will give their name to the kid. Obviously, if the parents are married and adopt together, they have to chose which name option they will use. If they already have children, the adopted kid will have the same name. There is one caveat: if the name of the biological mother is known and mentioned on the birth certificate, the adopted kid will keep her name.

which name is your favorite?
by now, i'm sure some of you have heard me rant about hugo, will, sebastian, and so on.
but i'm stuck on will's name. it's not quite right. it's a placeholder rn, but i'm not necessarily opposed to it.
i'm feeling two syllables and a lot of the names i have as options to replace will start with w ;-;
basically, i'd love to hear your thoughts and see which name is your favorite? i have no idea which i'm going to go with in the end, but who knows? maybe more opinions will help to even it out :)))
Warrick
Markham
Wiktor
Wilbur (and Will would end up being a nickname haha)
He's a nosy and rude thief who's out for himself and only helping Sebastian and Hugo because it benefits him. He and Hugo end up bonding (becoming best friends over time since neither of them has ever had a friend, really) and he ends up discovering that he might have...a family?
so anyway, i'd love to know what y'all think :DDDD

I FINALLY HAVE A NAME FOR THE MI6 GUY
Tumblr media
(Y’know, this fella.)
I think I’ll make his name Nathaniel. It finally sounds like something that fits.
And since I just thought about it, his last name could possibly be Jeremiah.
Nathaniel Jeremiah… how does that sound? :)

Fun thing about writing contemporary Finnish fantasy is giving the characters cute Finnish names like Lempi, and they're a horrible villain.

How God of War made me delete my internet history
Ok SPOILER ALERT: if you havent played the game until the end, just skip this post.
Ok, so you know how Faye, Kratos's late wife is supposed to be a Jotun, aka a giantess right? Well I made my little research: I put "Faye" and "giantess" in my search engine to see if she was a real mythological figure or if she was just especially created for the game.
And what do I FRIGGING find out? A frigging pornstar who do "giant" and "vore" porn! I mean... Come on! Do your fracking research before you name a character!!!!

Note
Did you go for monosyllabic OC names on purpose, or did it just happen?
It’s what they’re called by the 1st person POV. Obviously their full first names are Matthew, Vincent, and Margaret which I do use once or twice within the story. They are also occasionally called by the diminutives Mattie, Vinny, and Maggie. Ace does have a longer name, but it isn’t revealed until later in the story.
So sure, it was purposeful because it’s natural to shorten those names down to monosyllables. I would sound pretentious calling all my OC’s by their full names constantly within the story, and cheesy if I fit the “My name’s Valerie, but call me Val” trope.
Thanks for asking!
