Ep 10: Porcelain
Tumblr media
Protoporcelain has existed in China since Shang dynasty. With the economic and cultural development of the powerful Tang Dynasty the influence of Chinese porcelain spread abroad, an important contribution to the world civilization.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Archaism in ceramics was popular in Song dynasty and flourished in Ming and Qing dynasties. Nowadays many believe archaism is to imitate antique ceramics, whereas there's so much more into it such as reflecting the culture and characteristics of different periods and times, demanding the artists' thoughts and innovation all the more.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jun and Ru ware were considered to be as similar as twins and weren't differentiated much by the people of the industry.

Ep 11: Cont.
Chenghua Chicken Cup
A much-beloved design among all classes of people even in the present-day China compared to the other, "classier" porcelain styles, there are many stories about the origin of this cup.
Hi Producer picked the most sensational one, which is about how Emperor Chenghua appointed his beloved nanny who was 17 yrs older than him and was the only companion to him when he was deposed as a child, as his Consort once he was reinstated~ to protect her, keep her close etc.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And they had a child (out of love, or to secure her position, idk) but he died prematurely, and over years everyone started accusing her of witchcraft and killing other concubines' children (which is highly debated by historians). This entire thing obviously made the couple very distressed. Looking through porcelain pattern cataloges, Emperor Chenghua liked the chicken one most because of its simplicity and how it depicted a chicken mom and a chicken baby, which reminded him of their relationship. He had one made and sent to his beloved mother figure/consort.
Tumblr media
(I always wanted one of these cups because they are SO CUTE but now I want even more lol)

[Hanfu · 汉服]Chinese Ming Dynasty Chenghua era(1465-1487 AD) Traditional Clothing Hanfu & Hairstyle
【About horsehair skirt (马尾裙) petticoat】
A horsehair petticoat (马尾裙) is a petticoat that is worn under the skirt to give it a puffy appearance. This kind of petticoat came from Korea Joseon at that time.
❗ However, it would be wrong to say that the entire outfit above is Korean origin as someone claim.
In Ming Dynasty record "寓圃杂记/Yu Pu Notes" By Wang Kai王锜 emphasizes that this style of clothing  (马尾裙horsehair petticoat) is a kind of ominously strange clothing , which is what the ancients called "服妖(A derogatory term that describes people wearing weird clothing is bad symbol)". It is only popular among rich and uneducated people, and will let decent people look down on, the original words are " 然系此者惟粗俗官员、暴富子弟而已,士夫甚鄙之,近服妖也 "
Horsehair petticoats are popular in Beijing. Demand was low at first, and local production was impossible and unnecessary. They are all imported from Korea Joseon. When it becomes popular, even men like to wear horsehair petticoats under their robes, and the demand and market will naturally increase, so localized production began. But the number of horses is limited, and the most important raw material, horse hair, is not easy to obtain.
So some people went to the army camp to steal the horse hair of the army horse, which made the army horse look thin and bad.
❗In the Early Emperor Hongzhi era, the officials reported these incident to the Emperor Hongzhi(1470-1505)of the Ming Dynasty said”京中士人好著马尾衬裙,因此官马被人偷拔鬃尾,有误军国大计。乞要禁革”Saying that such behavior is not good for the country and suggest to ban horsehair petticoat. So Emperor Hongzhi make an order to banned people wearing Horsehair petticoats
Since then, this horsehair petticoat gradually disappeared from China history
❗ It is worth mentioning that even in the period when horsehair petticoats were popular, not everyone wore horsehair petticoats, as shown in the book "释氏源流应化事迹" in the Chenghua era of Ming Dynasty (AD 1465-1487): ( Women that not wear horsehair petticoats)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After Emperor Hongzhi banned the wearing of horsehair petticoats (back to the silhouette of Hanfu in the Ming Dynasty), as shown below

Okay now i’m curious, what is the sleuth of ming dynasty??
The drama based on danmei novel The Fourteenth Year of Chenghua (same author of Thousand Autumns and Peerless)
It's the story of Tang Fan, a sixth-rank judge, raising up through the ranks and solving mysteries/crimes and getting involved in the palace's schemes.
The tag joke is because, as per the novel's summary, "The Emperor was mediocre, and feckless. Eunuchs deceived those above them and kept those below them in the dark"
Basically eunuchs are running the show that include Wang Zhi, director of the west depot (also close to the emperor and the consort), and Shang Ming, director of the eastern depot.
[I am speaking only for the drama, the novel wasn't fully translated when I started it so I watched the drama first]

I saw in the tags on the reading post you were finishing up Imperial Uncle and that you liked it. I was just considering reading it and wondered if you might elaborate on your thoughts!
absolutely!
it's only one volume, which is a nice change of pace, literally-- plot events actually, like. happen. i finished it in two days of not-frantic reading! also, despite being an imperial drama, it means there's actually a relatively contained cast of characters.
it's first person narration, which I don't generally like much, but I do think it works in this case because the plot is essentially "area man misunderstands his relationships to everyone he knows," so it helps to only have the protagonist's POV.
the writing style doesn't really have the liveliness of MXTX or Meatbun, and the romance is extremely staid. he kisses the red herring love interest more than he does the actual one, and they spend most of their time talking around each other while the protagonist doesn't realize they're flirting. it reminds me of fourteenth year of chenghua in that respect, and some of the style reminds me a bit of priest as well (but less annoying, to me).
protagonist Prince Huai/Jing Weiyi/Chengjun is a bisexual dumbass in his 30s who insists he accidentally turned himself gay because he was only pretending to be a cutsleeve to reassure his mistrustful royal relatives that he was harmless and had no imperial ambitions but then slept with men too much and now he actually likes them :( that's the only reason ok :( self awareness score of 0. beneath an incredibly thin veneer of cynicism is a romantic who just wants to do right by his nephew the emperor, have someone to spend his life with, and to have a sense of purpose. he also sleeps with a LOT of other people, including sex workers, which i know is something that some people dislike.
the two potential love interests are a morally upright courtier who he thinks would naturally never dare associate with someone with his bad reputation, and a dandyish son of one of the older courtiers who has tried to recruit Chengjun into his schemes to topple the emperor, and who is one of his best friends.
there are also a passel of very charming nephews/brothers to the emperor. there are... no women to speak of lol (except his wife at the very beginning, but. yeah. she goes away.)
the sample on peach flower house's website gives a pretty good sense of the writing style, but I will say that while I didn't like the writing style at first or really ever, it definitely grew on me and I got pretty invested in the characters and in wanting to know how the plot would turn out. it's definitely one you want to approach with your shen qingqiu "this narrator is a moron and nothing he says about himself or other people is very accurate" goggles on.
the only content warning that comes to mind besides some violence is fairly extensive depictions of sex work, several of which which clearly acknowledge that the sex workers are slaves and do not want to be doing this.

Fourteenth year of chenghua is still EXTREMELY good, and it's good to know that wang zhi is literally their sitcom boyfriend and breaks into their homes and eats their food, but it's kind of fascinating to me that like.... I'm not sure I've read a single book with imperial succession as an climactic plot point where the pacing DIDN'T totally lose me at the end.
(Thousand Autumns might be closest, but 1) that wasn't the climax, and 2) i did still Slump after it happened and had to consciously muster my strength)
Dreamer in the Spring Boudoir, The Disabled Tyrant's Pet Palm Fish, Qi-Ye, it's pretty consistent! Did Golden Stage do an actual succession or just apply that pressure to the emperor? Either way, my attention was clearly slipping. Married Thrice To Salted Fish! I knew that was the plot direction and was excited for it, and it still struggled to hold me. This isn't over, and I don't even know if the plot WILL fully go there, but just as things were soaring-- two year time skip. Yeah, that's more bureaucratically realistic, and there's ALSO a real emperor who stopped ruling at whatever date, but mannnnnnnnnn.
I like the majority of the book a LOT, and I literally just said the thing about admiring meng xi shi weighting stories heavier towards plots, but i could really use a bit more indulgence here 🥲 I do highkey wonder if this show/book comparison will be like the untamed or woh where no, i love the book, maybe better than the show, but the body language and microexpressions are too powerful, they cannot be denied

Side B Polls will open on Tuesday, June 13th, 2023, at noon CST and will remain open for 1 week.
Character Information under the cut (subject to change) - CWs: sex mention, death mention, murder mention, slavery, sexual slavery, rape mention, animal mention, animal death mention, pet death/murder
Side A
Yue Wuhuan from Mistakenly Saving the Villain
A villain saved by the MC who is focused on revenge. The story seems to focuses on trauma recovery from his life as a s*x slave and handles mental health pretty well
Technically a “yandere” character, but the Novel Updates reviews describe his possessiveness and dark thoughts as byproducts of his trauma that he heals from, realizing that he shouldn’t be thinking of the MC that way and growing
“Our ML’s journey embodies a major theme of MSTV, which is about redemption and rebirth. His tragic past shaped him into a cunning, ruthless, manipulative, and obsessive individual. His past and continuing struggle will make your hearts break. It’s a difficult and painful journey of overcoming past trauma, letting go, and subsequently achieving freedom and happiness.” - blackkoi on NU
Yan Hao from Vicious Male Counterpart Isn’t Competing Anymore
Submission: He’s p cute
Yan Hao was jealous of and competed with his younger brother, who seemed to be loved more by their parents. After he dies, however, he realizes he was a villain meant to contrast his kind younger brother and be slapped by the male protagonist. Once he’s reborn, he decides to ignore his brother entirely
“High IQ, low EQ” - Sugaminny on Novel Updates
Honestly, the story sounds super cute and interesting. Yan Hao seems to be a character “hated by everyone” in his past life who can’t figure out how to be loved but does love others a lot, especially in his second life. Skite on NU describes him as autistic and villainized due to his neurodivergency / attempts to be loved and praised (their review words it better, but it sounds super interesting).
Xiao Chiye from Qiang Jin Jiu
Submission: Also an absolutely insane character but somehow not as deranged as his husband, shen zechuan, although he comes pretty damn close. i just wanna cause problems by putting them in the same poll
“VERY cocky and arrogant (sexy of him), but also an extremely talented leader and fighter” - QJJ Carrd
Initially kicks Shen Zechuan, the MC, due to SZC’s father’s treason, but starts to fall in love with him (Enemies → Lovers)
Shen Zechuan from Qiang Jin Jiu
Submission: he just serves absolute cunt and is absolutely insane. like we joke about characters being crazy but shen zechuan is the 1st one where ive paused reading and said outloud oh bitch you are absolutely out of your mind. Give it up for ruthless chronically ill schemers with a sense of loyalty so strong it becomes a fatal flaw and who are also at all times 100% devoted to the ppl they care about
The son of the Prince of Jianxing, who betrays the empire out of cowardice, that must survive when his entire family is to be killed for treason. There’s actually a scene at the beginning of him losing his brother in a battle and (I believe) returning to realize his father has run away
Another of the “chronically ill schemers” type and incredibly ruthless when necessary
Refuses to die or despair; he WILL survive and will turn things around - fate can be damned
Wang Zhi from Fourteenth Year of Chenghua
Submission: Wang Zhi is the emperor's eunuch-assassin who spends the entire book and show crashing the main character's brunches. There's a scene where someone gets confused because they can't fathom why Wang Zhi would show up at someone's house if it's not to murder them. In the series he has a tiny gun.
Gu Mang from Stains of Filth / Yuwu
Submission: He’s my little guy
He’s the tragic ML who betrayed the MC while also being the biggest fucking clown / the comedic relief
He truly believes he’s a fucking wolf at one point.
Essentially, Gu Mang was a slave in Murong Lian’s household, which led him to meet the MC, Mo Xi, who is a noble of similar standing to the Murong clan. He eventually becomes the General-in-Chief of the Wangba Army (later renamed to the Northern Frontier Army bc it was a funny name) and fights for the Chonghua Empire. However, since the Wangba Army was made of slaves, not a single of his fellow soldiers were given a proper burial, which - along with other reasons - led to Gu Mang defecting to an enemy nation (that also killed Mo Xi’s father and may or may not be cannibals).
The story begins when said enemy nation trades Gu Mang back to Chonghua as a prisoner of war with parts of his soul gone, causing him to believe he’s a majestic blue wolf. The summary is a tiny bit misleading, albeit not wrong - “they’ve slept together before” is actually more “they slept together multiple times while Mo Xi, at the very least, is incredibly in love with Gu Mang.”
Gu Mang’s also pretty funny, even with his memories gone, albeit the inherent tragedy is overwhelming. Idc what “evils” he committed… the Lotus Pavilion thing or whatever was fucked up. The author is so brutal to him, and for what? Funsies? (<--mainly joking, but it’s a SAD story… I’ve cried so many times)
Anyway, Gu Mang Did Not Deserve This 2023
Yan Zhengming from Liu Yao: the Revitalization of Fuyao Sect
Submission: Winner of the award for highest number of times I’ve called a man a “pretty princess”
Apparently has a fantastic character development into the Sect Leader (I’m not that far), but he’s also just a pretty princess <2
He’s the eldest disciple of Han Muchun / Fuyao Sect who was born into a rich family. He ran away at age seven and became Han Muchun’s first apprentice/disciple. He’s similar to a spoiled young master character, but he doesn’t really bully anyone; he may try to bully/clash with Cheng Qian, but I don’t think he wins (been a while since I started it - he’s like 15, and Cheng Qian is ~9-10 at this point)
“Strict with others but lenient on himself” → responsible Sect Leader pipeline, More at 10 pm
Side B
Wenren È from Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know
The MC of Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know, Wenren È, finds a book that details the world around him where he’s the second male lead / love interest who dies to protect the Female Lead / protagonist. He is not in love with her, and he can’t imagine dying for her as is; he also doesn’t understand why his subordinate, who supposedly likes her as well, tried to kill her after his death. I think he’s tasked with addressing readers’ concerns with the novel, but there’s also a lot more going on lol
Submission 1: unhinged, no idea what romance is, has a feral dog with rabies for a boyfriend and thinks that boyfriend is super cute. Also, middle aged man. I love middle aged men.
Submission 2: Because Look, he is trying to get two characters to fall in love for Important Plot reasons and a: him and his main Minion have to look up what love is like in the shitty romance novels they're characters in, and then b: decide to make the two characters fall in love through the Cunning Use of Bugs. Also he got a copy of the book he is a character in, found out his fate, and was like I Think The Fuck Not.
He also has pretty good morals, if not personality. He’s a much better guy than I expected him to be tbh
Song Qingshi from Mistakenly Saving the Villain
A medical student who chooses to transmigrate into a sad Danmei novel to save the protagonist. He does not save the protagonist - he saves a cannon fodder villain named Yue Wuhuan.
“Has a lack of understanding of social situations/an odd personality” - past submission (Danmei Tournament)
Very intelligent but dense to love and s*x; book smart; passionate about what he likes
Yin Hanjiang from Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know
Submission 1: He’s my little scrunkly
Submission 2: He’s my evil wife.
Yin Hanjiang is the second-in-command of the current Demon Lord Wenren È and the fourth male lead of Abusive Romance: You are the Unchanging One in My Heart, a novel Wenren È reads. In the novel, Yin Hanjiang blackens and tries to kill the female lead after Wenren È’s death.
You would think Wenren È would be the craziest mf in this story, but it is, in fact, Yin Hanjiang. In the original novel, he tortured/chased the FL for quite a while to the point of being one of - if not the most - hated villains in the story; he was originally masked and revealed in a completely unseen twist, I believe.
He was saved by Wenren È as a child and is obsessed with him, although their relationship changes more to friends than boss-subordinate WAY before they get together.
Wu Xi from Lord Seventh / Qi Ye
Submission: He is the roundworm in my stomach
Qi Ye tells the story of Prince Jing Beiyuan’s seventh life, which is a repeat of his first life. Wu Xi is the Great Shaman’s Shamanet and the Empire’s captive from Nanjiang who did not appear in Jing Beiyuan’s first life.
From what I remember, he uses something similar to magic to make a court official become aroused / see a beautiful woman and embarrass himself in front of the entire court. As a child.
He also has a vast array of dangerous and venomous animals, one of which he gifts to Jing Beiyuan after they become friends.
Li Yu from Disabled Tyrant’s Pet Palm Fish
Submission: He’s infuriating and I love him, also helped create equal rights in ancient china
Li Yu transmigrated into a carp tasked with stealing a mute tyrant’s heart (by the system). He does not know how he’s supposed to do this, but the tyrant - Mu Tianchi - is waiting for him to transform into a human, already in love(?) with him.
The reviews on Novel Updates are… mainly unflattering… but he appears to be a naive and sweet character with in a fluffy love story with the ML, Mu Tianchi
An Zhe from Little Mushroom
Submission 1: honest to god, he’s just a little mushroom
Submission 1: he’s just a little mushroom
An optimistic mushroom mutated into a human trying to find his stolen spores
“An Zhe is the only person who wholeheartedly believes in Lu Feng [the ML]” - Carrd
Cui Buqu from Peerless
Submission: He’s mean, he’s disabled and unapologetic about it, he’s a genius and all his braincells escape him when faced with his rival, he’s a secret agent and has no martial arts, he’s deeply in love and will never say so unless pushed, he will liken his rival to his sun and then tell him he’s the most annoying person he’s ever met. He’s a bastard little fox <3
Helian Yi from Lord Seventh / Qi Ye
Qi Ye tells the story of Prince Jing Beiyuan’s seventh life, which is a repeat of his first life. All of his first five lives have been tied to Helian Yi - he helped him ascend the throne in their first life, he was an insect crushed by Helian Yi in his second life, he was a beloved dog killed to feed Helian Yi’s family in his third life, he was a neglected jasmine plant in his fourth life, he was a fox skinned by Helian Ye in his fifth life - but in the first and seventh lives, Helian Yi’s the Crown Prince of the Jin Empire while Jing Beiyuan is the Prince Nan’ning (a title; he’s not related to Helian Yi as far as I know). In their seventh life, Helian Yi seems to be treating him very well (from what I’ve read), but he’s not the love interest.
He’s also in Faraway Wanderers (for, like, one chapter) and technically is Prince Jin in Word of Honor (but they’re pretty much completely different characters). Zhou Zishu is his most trusted aid who formed Heaven’s Window and then left.
Idk, I haven’t gotten that far in Qi Ye; he sounds like the villain, but he’s really just Sad - Idk if he’s in love with Jing Beiyuan or what, but he’s SAD, okay? From what I can tell, he cares for Jing Beiyuan but can’t be with him because of his position as Crown Prince, but don’t quote me on that
“In that instant, Helian Yi suddenly wanted to take him into his arms, suddenly wanted to wholly throw out and disregard the home, nation, and world that weighed down on his mind and body, no longer brooding on and wishing for a liaison he didn’t dare to have. He wanted to say, from now on, come earthly blades of wind and swords of frost, I will do everything I can to block them or you. There is only one person in this life and this world for me, even without this extensive, partially mountainous, mostly oceanic king’s land.” - Source

An imperial fahua ‘dragon’ jar, guan, Chenghua-Hongzhi period, late 15th century.
This exceptional jar is a very rare example of a Ming dynasty porcelain vessel decorated in the so-called fahua technique with a design of five imperial five-clawed dragons. The name fahua was coined by collectors in the 1920s[1] and can be translated as ‘designs with borders’. Fine relief lines of clay slip were applied to the surface of the ceramic item and these lines served as outlines to the design and also created bounded areas in which to apply relatively low-firing alkaline glazes of different colours. On some pieces, such as the current jar, details of elements such as the scales on dragons, the feathers on birds or the veins on leaves, were additionally incised into the body of the vessel under the glaze. This type of decoration is also sometimes referred to as the ‘cloisonné technique’, since it shares some similarities with cloisonné decoration on metal.
The technique of using raised outlines in ceramic decoration appears to have initially been used in the Yuan, or possibly even the Song, period on stoneware items from the tile-making kilns in Shanxi, and was later adopted in more refined form for use on porcelain at the Jingdezhen kilns. This decorative technique is especially associated with porcelains of the late 15th and early 16th centuries, particularly the reigns of the Hongzhi (1487-1505) and Zhengde (1505-1521) emperors. However, archaeological research has now revealed that the technique was used in rare instances at the Jingdezhen imperial kilns in the Xuande (1426-35) and Chenghua (1465-87) reigns. A dish decorated on the exterior with a design of green dragons and clouds on a yellow ground was excavated from the Xuande stratum of the Zhushan imperial kilns at Jingdezhen in 1988 and is illustrated in Xuande Imperial Porcelain excavated at Jingdezhen, Chang Foundation, Taipei, 1998, p. 78, no. 73. Even more significantly, a very similar yellow and green dragon dish with fahua decoration was also excavated from the mid-Chenghua stratum at the imperial kilns (illustrated in The Emperor’s broken china – Reconstructing Chenghua porcelain, London, 1995, p. 104, no. 142). (Fig. 1) The similarities of proportion and form between the dragons on the green and yellow dish excavated from the mid-Chenghua stratum at the imperial kilns and the dragons on the current jar raise the distinct possibility that the jar could date to the Chenghua reign.

[Hanfu · 漢服]Chinese Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 AD) Traditional Clothing Hanfu &  Lantern Festival 元宵節
【About Lantern Festival/ Shangyuan Festival (元宵節/上元節)
Today is The Lantern Festival also called Shangyuan Festival (上元節), is a Chinese traditional festival celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first month in the lunisolar Chinese calendar, during the full moon. Usually falling in February or early March on the Gregorian calendar, it marks the final day of the traditional Chinese New Year celebrations. As early as the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC–AD 25), it had become a festival with great significance.
During the Lantern Festival, children go out at night carrying paper lanterns and solve riddles on the lanterns (猜燈謎). In ancient times, the lanterns were fairly simple, and only the emperor and noblemen had large ornate ones.As below Ming Dynasty court paintings【明宪宗元宵行乐图 】:

It depicts the lively scenes of watching lanterns, watching operas and setting off firecrackers in the inner court on the Lantern Festival in the 21st year of Chenghua (1485).Among them we can see a lot of large ornate lanterns in this painting

At the same time, we can also see the children in the palace carrying lanterns of various shapes

The painting is very long, and it is a custom painting reflecting the celebration of the Lantern Festival in the court of the Ming Dynasty.

Also known as "游百病You Baibing", "散百病San Baibing", etc., it is a traditional folk culture in the north china since the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Some of them are held on the Lantern Festival, but most of them are held on the next day of the Lantern Festival.
On this day, women dressed in formal costumes, walked out of the house in groups, crossed bridges, climbed the tower over a city gate, and touch the nails on the city gate to pray for hopes of good health and longevity until midnight before going back home. Besides, touch the nails on the city gate it also pray for having child(摸钉求子)."Nail钉" are same pronunciation as Ding丁,It can be associated with the word "人丁Ren Ding": a Chinese word that originally refers to an adult man and later refers to the population.Basically, it is to pray for to have more and more family members in the future(child).

First Karmapa Düsum Khenpa's Footprint
This painting on silk from Rubin Museum of Art depicts the footprints of an early Karmapa, probably the first, Dusum Khyenpa, together with a portrait and the eight auspicious symbols.
The First Karmapa, Dusum Khyenpa Chokyi Drakpa was born in Tresho, Kham, in 1110. His father was a Yamäntaka practitioner and his mother was Latokza Gangcham Mingdren. His father gave him instructions in the Nyingma tantric traditions, including Ekajati, and he is said to have met Vairocanavajra, an Indian alchemist who had previously been to the Chinese court where he drank a cup of mercury before the Emperor.
When Dusum Khyenpa was sixteen, in 1124, he took novice ordination with the Kadam monk Trewo Chokgi Lama, a disciple of Ngok Lotsäwa Loden Sheraband his uncle, Ngok Lekpai Sherab. He entered into two years of retreat at Treka Drak with other Kadam lamas, learning the Cakrasamvara and other tantric lineages of Atisa Dipamkara from Yol Chowang, who was a disciple of Atisa himself, and Geshe Trarawa, Yol Chowang's disciple.
It is said that when Dusum Khyenpa was sixteen he was given a black hat woven from the hair of ten thousand dākini. Variant historical accounts of this hat and subsequent versions are legion. Some have it that the First Karmapa to have a physical hat visible to all was the Fifth Karmapa, Dezhin Shekpa (1384-1415), given to him by the Ming Yongle Emperor (r. 1402-1424). Others have it that the Ming Emperor Chenghua (r. 1464-1487) gave the first black hat to the Seventh Karmapa, Chodrak Gyatso
(1454-1506). The artistic record shows that the Second Third, and Fourth Karmapas all wore a black hat..

Ep 16-17: Cuisine Cont. (Part 1)
Three things.
I came close to doubting my sanity because SO many food and I got ptsd flashbacks from the time I recapped 200+ dishes of Royal Feast lol. And Tumblr has a 10 pics limit per post and I don't feel like making these two eps more than two posts, so I resorted to cutting the food scenes into videos.
To my further frustration the HD video I downloaded of this ep had terrible hard subs and I ain't gonna redownload it so please turn a blind eye, I'll type the proper translation anyway and there's the Chinese subs.
Some of these have being showcased in Royal Feast and Delicacies Destiny too, I'll link them in Red.

Shangyuan (lantern) Festival in Lichun - Yuanxiao
Make balls using crushed peanuts, black sesame, sugar, milk. Dampen and coat in glutinous rice flour and put in boiling water. The detailed process of making it is recorded in "Zhuozhongzhi" of Ming Dynasty. A Song dynasty verse says, "Culinary officer searched for new flavor.
Kitchen maid marvelled at the new technique.
Dark clouds glittered with stars.
White pearls dance in boiling water."
"A night of full moon without lanterns is dull. A full moon without lanterns isn't spring. When spring arrives, people are like pieces of jade. Above the glowing lanterns, the moon turns silver."
-Tang Bohu
"Emerald ladle and silver pot to relish the night stroll. Countless lanterns are lit with the moon above the building. Silky smooth amber flow into the spoon. Brilliant pearls sail on the soup. Delightful aroma in hand, warmth arises in the wine vessel. The old traditions of the capital remains exuded."
