It's a disc detainer/disc tumbler lock key with no handle on its head. The lock does not use pins, unlike with most locks, and instead uses notches. There's likely false notches in the lock that 009's key fits into for security, and due to the notches at the end of the key, it implies an additional non-rotating disc at the end for additional security (+ makes it way harder to pick). The locks for these keys are harder to pick compared to pin locks, AKA it's high-security, and it's much more durable due to less parts being capable of rusting.

to be fair they were doing a song localization which can change a lot of things. if you had to translate that line with its nuances mostly intact, it'd end up being: 飲み込んだマイナスのイメージが 僕を抱き締めてくれたの "the negative [energy/visage/image] that was [swallowed/forced down/gotten] gave the [favor/kindness] of giving me a tight embrace" there's a sense of another agency/individuality given to the negative energy due to the が (ga), who exerts active control/exercises their agency over 僕 to give 僕 a hug that is implied they need i really do think a lot of EN-onlys have been missing out on a lot of his character and story because of just how hard it is to translate over his writing to a language that doesn't inherently contain those nuances in its system. also, i do think that they don't have anything that is even remotely equivalent to the western "gatekeeper" considering the word "gatekeeper" implies an individualistic closed-off culture whereas Mikoto is situated in a collectivist closed-off culture. it would be more apt to say that how his memories get blocked off is more so based on the overarching rules of what is desired or not, and whichever actions/state of being don't fit that standard cause mental distress for 09 leading to amnesia of it. maybe rather than "gatekeeper" it would be better to call that sort of filtering system for his dissociation "xenotorter" (xeno- = strange/foreign, -tort = forcing a change, -er = agent noun) or "xenophobitorter" (-phobia = aversion) something. maybe "xenoarbiter"? i do honestly think that that line does reference the part of Mikoto Kayano that takes all of the negativity and shoulders it, yet despite carrying it all, still attempts to comfort his self. it's admirable, really, when you consider that that part is likely exhausted but still chooses to volitionally exercise peace/respite towards himself.

Honestly tho that would be so interesting for his character, especially cause personally I've low key always been obsessed with that line and how it fits into his murder/his characterization. Having his hypothetical "third alter" be less akin to a westernized gatekeeper (aka a mostly internal one that deals with the flow of information and memory, as well as which alters are permitted to front) and instead one that encapsulates his negative feelings or feelings that don't fit into boku's perception of his self would be so interesting. Not to mention it would mean that in Mikoto's current state we might still get genuine information on his murder. Because instead of just getting it told to us outright, we get a more pessimistic/misleading take, compared to boku's denial or ore's lack of certain contextualizing memories within his personal account.

if i'm being honest i don't really give a shit about the discourse of whether 09 is good or bad DID rep nor do i give a shit about how his DID manifests. i find that what makes him interesting isn't a label for a set of symptoms but rather his expression of those symptoms cultivated by the world he was raised in and how he responds or continues those behaviours. it's honestly more interesting to analyze the overarching systems in society that assisted in developing Mikoto Kayano into a murderer.

how different would he be if Japanese society were more open about emotions and struggles? how different would he be if he were receiving mental health treatment? would he still become a murderer and, if so, what made those mental health treatments ineffective? if he had been hired at another japanese company that didn't follow black company practices, would he still have become a murderer? if so, why? what were the factors that made an average, young adult become a murderer? so on so forth.

honestly the fetish this fandom has on his dissociated self that gives the illusion of multiplicity — when, in reality, he's a singular whole that is fragmented; cracks lined with dissociative barriers, chiseled by continuous stress — detracts from the complexity of his character and writing, flanderizing him into a prop of DID that the fandom puppets into theatrics of stigmatization that same fans claim to "educate" against when, in truth, spout blasé hearsays encrypted with a DIDcore-lese that does nothing for communicating information about the disorder and, instead, excludes and dissuades the general population that that supposed "education" is directed towards.

what purpose does inaccessible language have if you're trying to educate the average person who isn't familiar with those online community terms that aren't even universal terms in literature nor research? and how are these terms even relevant to discussing Mikoto's character when the concepts it supposedly encompasses aren't universal nor applicable to all possible subjective presentations that a human brain can develop? and yet the fandom, and much of the online mental disorder community, treats those sociolect terms as an axiom — a universal truth, universal terms — and the lack of adherence to that speech is seen as wrong or sin.

the less people view Mikoto as the "alters guy", the more complex understandings can be gathered and discussed within the fandom. the more people view Mikoto as the "average, normal guy who committed a murder, but why? what caused an average, hardworking guy to commit the most grievous sin of murder?", the better the range of insight and curiosity into what shapes a person and the factors in their world — a reflection of our present reality — at play which interact and weave with one another to shape and respond to its members; the opposite of cutting off the fluidity and interwovenness Mikoto has with people and environments outside of his self that people constrain him to, that prison cell of a single label characteristic: "DID".
