pop stars aren't born in the 70s anymore like they used to be. These days they're born in a year uncomfortably close to my own which makes me clutch my chest and cry out
#music#musicians#Nia Archives was on radio the other day going 'my album's the first jungle album to be nominated for the Mercury Prize in over 25 years#that's such an honour! The last one was Roni Size and I wasn't even born then' --hang on a minute#that album was like. 1997. 'I wasn't even born yet'?#Folks she is a year older than me đ(â€ïž but also personally đ)#Cat Burns' Mercury shortlisted album is called 'early twenties'. It is a term I am told I can no longer use for myself.#She says 'the album was a 4-year long process. I started writing it when I was 20.' Cat Burns is my age.#CMAT. Dublin's 'global superstar'. 1997. Literally she's such a classic popstar/country star I'd have expected to read like '1987' or somet#not in terms of saying she's old or anything; just that that seems appropriate for someone who's in control of their career#CMAT is like 2 years older than I am. It's so wild to me#especially this time! There have been a lot of debut albums you see#and I'm really proud of all these--I suppose at my age I'm allowed to say--kids; my peers? But it's also so strange to see#My peers are at the Mercuries. Declan McKenna is like a year older than me#That has been in my head ever since Brazil came out. He was 15. I was 14.#sigh it's a long road to either acceptance or such radical change that I 'catch up' with everyone; whatever that means#yes I'm well aware that comparison isn't a thing to do. I know it's not productive.#I try not to let it get me anxious; afterall what do I do about it?#It's not like I've got the ball rolling on anything significant to speak of. I'm just at ordinary work#idk also the industry I work in doesn't exist anymore hahahaaaa so yeah. No career. Only far away admirations! :)#We will have no infrastructure and we will be happy.#Don't read all this; just laugh at the meme about age and move on#growing up

Green Eyes and Gunpowder (4/?)
Thomas Shelby x OC (Emily Hughes)
Summary - Sharp-tongued, steady-handed, and raised beside the Shelbys like blood, Dr. Emily Hughes weaves through their war for Birmingham with a surgeonâs precisionâoffering comfort, challenge, and quiet resistance, especially to the man whoâs forgetting how to be anything but a weapon.
Word Count - 3,256
Warnings - Nothing that wasn't there before
A/N - We have a small bit of conflict. Also, fun fact, the Swan is a pub I go to here in Dublin quite often.
Thanks for the support <3 Would love to know what you think!
Chapter 3
She didnât expect to make it back to Small Heath only to spend her evening warming her hands on burning portraits of the king.
Then again, to quote her father, fuck the monarchy.
âDr. Hughes, Iâm told.â Itâd been a while since Grace had first seen the green-eyed woman here in the Garrison. Nearly three weeks, though sheâd been in a few times with the Shelbys since. Apparently, the inspector had run into her â called her an uncouth devil.
Well, that devil took a seat at the counter and smiled at her with nothing but kindness.
âJust Emily is fine. Iâve been a bit rude not introducing myself the last few weeks. Itâs Grace, right?â
The pub had just opened for the day and this early it was only the two women in the whole place â well except for Harry doing inventory in the back.
Cleaning off another glass, Grace nodded. âNo problem. Itâs good to meet you.â
âTommy says youâre from Galway. I was just there.â Grace stilled for a split second before continuing. âWhere in the city did you grow up?â
âNewcastle for most of my life. I moved to Dublin to work after.â
âNear University College, Galway â I was helping at the hospital.â That was fine â this part of the story was true at least. She could answer any question about Galway. âDid you want to leave?â
That stopped her for a second, putting the glass down, she turned her full attention to the pretty woman at the bar.
âIâŠâ She met nothing but kind eyes and a gentle smile. âMy father died. I couldnât be there anymore.â
Emilyâs shoulders lowered and, in a move that shocked Grace, placed her hand over Graceâs own. Her smile turned empathetic, and Grace was almost nervous by how seen she suddenly felt.
âIâm so sorry, Grace.â Her voice was soft, warm. âI know how that feels. Iâm sorry you do too.â
âYou lost your father?â Emily nodded.
âI was fourteen.â Her grin only fell for a moment before it was back, âItâs not a good story. He was from Limerick. A good man.â Then she tacked something on that made Graceâs eyes widen, âA good father.â
Not the words themselves, but the fact that they were said in perfect Irish.
Emily laughed at her wide eyes. âHe wanted us to know it. My mum didnât like it, but she couldnât stop him neither.â
âMy dad wanted me to know it too.â Why was she speaking Irish? She shouldnât be speaking Irish. The IRA used Irish. âHe said it was important to know our history.â
âItâs always good to know where you came from.â Emily affirmed. âEven if itâs a little removed for some of us.â
There was a silence, a comfortable one. Emilyâs eyes drifted out the door and back to Grace a few times.
âAre you waiting for someone?â She asked. Of course, she was; she wasnât here just to chat, and she hadnât asked for a drink.
âTommy probably. Eventually.â She shrugged. âOr Arthur. Unlikely to be John. Whichever gets my message first.â
Vague.
âTommy also told me you worked in Dublin.â
She nodded at that; she had been feeling a little too comfortable. Falling into her made-up backstory would make her feel more in control.
âI worked in a few pubs - the Swan was my favourite. It was a good place, and the owner was good to me.â She turned back to her pile of glasses, âThere was a lot of singing back home; packed to the brim most nights.â She attempted a wistful smile, but Emily didnât meet it.
âGrace,â her voice was quiet, âYou didnât work in Dublin.â
Panic.
âYes Iââ
âGrace.â She slammed her mouth shut. âWeâve got connections over there. There are no pubs with the names you gave â weâve checked.â
Her gaze was intense, and Grace couldnât have felt more wrongfooted right now if she tried. Was she about to get found out? Part of her wanted to look around wildly for her gun but knew if she tried it would definitely blow her cover.
Emily wasnât saying anything, just staring at her, waiting for her to make the next move. It was only the two of them; if this went south, she would have a chance.
âI wandered when my father died, from Cork to Limerick to Belfast, even to Tipperary at one point. I was lost; I couldnât be there, but I also couldnât get work with no history.â She didnât know where this was coming from, but she had to come up with something. âI lied to Harry to get the job â I was desperate.â
Emilyâs eyes watched her for a little while, before humming and looking away out the door again.
Was that it? What was happening? Was this why Emily'd called for one of the Shelbys to meet her here?
She fisted her hands into her apron and tried to look a normal level of nervous.
âPlease donât tell, Harry.â She sounded desperate because she was, just not for that reason. âI need this job.â
The doctor eventually dragged her eyes back to Grace, smiling just a little, and the barmaid felt herself relax.
âWhite liesâŠâ She started, taking out a cigarette from her bag, âWe all tell them. And you do a good job here.â
Grace watched the cigarette light up with a nearly overwhelming amount of relief.
âEmily! There you are!â Graceâs gaze snapped to the sudden voice basically booming from the door. A woman, no older that she was and decently pretty, dressed professionally and with a camera on a tie around her neck.
That was⊠not any of the Shelbys?
âI came as soon as I could! A tip about a Crown inspector â how could I resist!â The woman basically bounced up to the bar.
Grace could almost feel her ears perking up â Crown business? She looked at Emily with her eyebrows raised.
âHello, Emily. How are you, Emily? Howâs your day so far, Emily?â The doctor teased, getting a sigh and a pout in return. âIâm very well, Rebecca, so kind of you to ask.â
âYes, yes fine. Everyone is fine. Now, that tip?â
Emily laughed and turned back to Grace, who was sure the look she was giving Emily was rife with confusion.
âWhite lies, Grace. We all tell them.â So, she wasnât meeting a Shelby here. Why lie at all? âThis is Rebecca Gibbons, a reporter at The Times. Rebecca, Grace Burgess.â
âYes, lovely to meet you.â The eagerness of this woman was nearly overwhelming, but Emily took it in stride.
âLetâs go get lunch. My treat and Iâll let you know all you want, eh?â
She picked up her bag and offered Grace a nod before heading out with a cheery âsee you laterâ as she did.
A tip? What could she have possibly found out?
âSomethingâs amiss with the barmaid.â
The loud atmosphere of poker night still spilled into the kitchen, despite the door closed between them. Arthur and John were really messing with each other tonight, Tommy making his own little jabs here and there, and it was almost heartwarming to see them like this again. Almost like it was before the War.
Polly had wanted a cup of tea; she hadnât expected Emily to follow her.
âWhat makes you say that?â
Emily leaned on the counter next to the kettle. âI talked to her today, about the lies, about not actually having worked in Dublin. Sheâs a good liar, but Iâm a better one. Made up some story about wandering when her father died.â
Taking a drag of her cigarette, she wasnât looking at Polly, just staring at the wall.
âMight be nothing, the boys like her, but⊠I have a bad feeling.â
âIâd take your bad feelings over a manâs good one any day. They go for whoever their dicks point at without a second thought.â
Emily nodded at that. Her face was inscrutable.
âSheâs got a tell when sheâs lying.â A deep pull and slow exhale. âShe gives too many details. When sheâs telling the truth, sheâs vague. Her father's dead but she isnât a wanderer.â
Polly poured them both cups of tea, orange pekoe for her and that horrendous peppermint stuff that Emily liked. She caught the younger woman smiling when Polly must have made a face.
âThanks, Pol.â
The two women stood for a few minutes, shoulder-to-shoulder and silent, before Polly spoke up.
âYou got him to offload the guns.â
Emily nodded, âYeah. We should have gotten at least twelve thousand for them, but thereâs too much heat from the coppers for that to work safely, especially if we need this done quick. I got ten.â
She sounded⊠almost ashamed. It reminded Polly of a confession more than anything else.
âI worry what this family would look like if anything ever happened to you.â
That was evidently not what Emily had been expecting and her eyebrows nearly disappeared into her hairline.
âTommy doesnât listen to anyone, Arthurâs angrier than Iâve ever seen, John is running away from his kids, and Ada is rebelling for God knows what reason. Those boys came back from France more fractured than theyâve ever been.â She took a sip of her tea, but Emily was still staring, confused and uncertain. âBut youâve been making them better, fixing whatever hell that war did to their souls. Sometimes theyâre more like who they were before. I thank God for you every day, Emily. But I shouldnât be surprised â youâve been a good influence on them since they were lads. Thatâs part of the reason Martha liked you so much.â
Emily looked away. Polly knew she was going to say something, trying to find the words, she could feel it in her heart.
âI donât know about that.â Her voice was a whisper. Polly nearly had to strain to hear. âI just want everyone safe. And because of that I feel like Iâm more of a nuisance than anything. That IâmâŠâ Her eyes closed and she swallowed thickly. âIâm pushing too much, wearing out my goodwill. I donât want to interfere as much as I do, I know Iâm not family â I know I shouldnât. But I canât seem to stop pushing us down what I see as the most survivable path. Taking reins I have no business touching. Iâm lucky you all have been good about it. Lucky Tommy listens sometimes.â
Sometimes the way Emily spoke made Polâs heart ache. Never thinking she belonged anywhere, an outsider even among them, the people she saw as her family â afraid they didnât see her the same. Afraid one day sheâd be thrown away again, left behind again with not so much as a goodbye. Trying so hard to make herself useful so theyâd stay. Never believing that theyâd never leave her, that she was as much a child to Polly as her own were, as the Shelbys were.
The War did a number on her too and a part of Pol burned with shame at forgetting that.
Her hands were shaking. Polly had seen it happen dozens of times when she was a girl. Her mother would scream horrible things at her, and she would stand there placidly, the only sign of distress the trembling of childish fingers.
Pol turned to her, reaching her hand out to touch the pendant on the chain around the younger womanâs neck.
âI gave you this,â her fingers tapped on the face of the Black Madonna, âbecause you are family.â She tilted her head back towards the kitchen door. âThose boys are playing poker in the other room because you are family. Because you make this family better. Donât you disrespect us by claiming otherwise.â
Emilyâs eyes were wide as she stared at Polly, but the older woman did not flinch or back away.
âIâŠâ She wrapped her hands more tightly around her cup of peppermint, finally looking away. Nodding she took a sip. âPromise me youâll warn me if that ever changes, eh?â
Pol rolled her eyes and turned back to the door. No need to dignify that with a response.
Seven weeks late. Emily closed her eyes and breathed. Fucking hell, Ada.
âThe iron tablets I got you didnât help did they.â It didnât sound like a question, but Ada still shook her head and looked away.
Emily looked to Pol who was watching her expectantly. Putting her cup down, Emily stood and took Ada by the hand.
âCome on, Addy,â her voice was very gentle. âLetâs take a look.â
Twenty minutes and two examinations later (she had to be certain), the three women had reconvened to the sitting room. Ada was defending herself to Pol, saying that she loved him, saying that she wanted to keep the baby. Distantly, Emily was considering punching Freddie in the face. Why God had she agreed to keep their secret?
Pol was⊠understandably a little disappointed, which always sent an instinctive pang through the doctor even when it wasnât directed at her.
Safe. Thatâs what sheâd just told Polly she wanted: everybody to be safe. Childbearing wasnât safe, especially at such a young age. Or alone. Did Freddie want to be a father? Was he even coming back? She knew he had disappeared after the raids; Ada had lamented to her about it. Sheâd patted Adaâs back and told her it was going to be okay, but it wasnât. It wasnât okay because Ada was with his fucking childâ
âEm, please, you have to be on my side!â
Oh, she had tuned out for too long. Both gazes were on her now.
She closed her eyes and sighed. Adaâs eyes widened when she stood up, tracking her with no small amount of hope as she made her way to stand in front of the woman that she considered a little sister.
Crouching in front of the young â far too young for this â girl, she took both her hands. She was silent for a few moments, holding her gaze heavily, letting herself see the love and fear and desperation Ada was trying so hard to deal with in that moment.
âIâm your doctor.â She said finally. âNo matter what you choose â to keep it or to get rid of it, Iâm the one taking care of you, understand me? Iâm the one who will end the pregnancy or deliver it.â
There was intensity in her voice, her eyes boring into Ada, making sure she understood that this was something she was not going to take ânoâ as an answer for. Nonetheless, Ada nodded, a few tears welling up in her eyes that the only Shelby daughter blinked away just as quickly.
âGood.â
Of course she was the one relegated to telling Tommy. Of fucking course. Ada refused to do it herself and Polly said he would take it best from her. What she wanted wasnât a fucking concern apparently.
It was at the stables where she found him. She didnât want to do it at the house, too many wandering eyes and ears. He was petting the new horse, the lovely white one from the Lees that they hadnât named yet, mumbling gently to it. At peace, thatâs how he looked. From the door, if she squinted, it could be 1913 again.
âTommy.â
He turned back to look at her with a smile, which fell when he saw the grave expression on her face.
âWhat is it? Whatâs happened?â He took a few steps away from the horse, and she came further in. Looking around, no one else was about. It was so much quieter than the heart of Birmingham ever had any right to be.
âAdaâs pregnant.â
She watched the last glimmers of joy fade from his eyes, replaced by horror and anger. Eyes flickering to her and the door, he was torn between asking her more information and going to find Ada himself.
âDo you know who?â She nodded. âTell me.â
âFreddie.â And now was the time to admit her role, she knew, and so she did. âTheyâve been sneaking off to seeing each other for months.â
His anger was a wild thing. If it had to go somewhere, she preferred it was to her rather than to Ada. The girl didnât need that right now â not with the fear and hurt she was feeling already.
âHow fucking long have you known, eh?â
âA couple of months, ever since I came back from Galway.â Betrayal, that was the look on his face. Hurt and betrayal. âShe asked me not to tell anyone, Tommy. Iââ
âSheâs my fucking sister!â He was yelling now. Yelling was nothing new to her, she just moved her hands behind her back to hide the trembling â she knew it would start soon. âMy sister! My family! Not fucking yours! And you didnât tell me that she was fucking Freddie Thorne?â
Digging her fingernails into her arms was always effective at curbing her bodyâs responses. Yes, she could handle yelling, had been screamed at more times than she could count, but it was never from Tommy. And it ached almost as much as the words themselves.
Ada wasnât her sister, this wasnât her family, he was right, but it hurt to hear herself so painfully excluded from the family so soon after voicing her own doubts to Polly. But it was true â no matter what Polly told her, no matter what people like Inspector Campbell implied â she was an outsider that they welcomed into their home. That didnât make her family.
âTheyâre in love, Tommy.â She couldnât help but try and stick up for Ada here. It would make him angrier, but she had to do it. Ada was her friend, and she loved her. âThey want to get married.â
âI donât want to hear it. You should have fucking told me. What else are you fucking keeping from me, eh?â He looked like he wanted to hit something. âMake any more shitty deals on behalf of my fucking family you want to tell me about? Are you trying to ruin us? After everything weâve fucking done for you?â
Her mouth dropped open, ice water filling her veins. He thought she⊠that she would ever⊠that she could ever betray the people she loved more than anything. The people who had saved her more than she could ever repay. If she didnât know any better, sheâd think the ache in her heart was it saying it was about to literally break in half. Swallowing heavily, she took a step backwards away from him and his anger.
âIâll call Patrick tomorrow morning and pull out of our â sorry, your â end of the bargain. Youâre right: I shouldnât make deals on behalf of your family. You have my word that it wonât happen again.â She said, trying desperately to keep the quiver from her own voice with decent success. But she did keep her gaze on the ground, not able to look into cold eyes she was used to being filled with warmth.
âIâm sorry I keep disappointing you. Adaâs gone to the pictures if you want to talk to her.â
With that she turned and walked away, the blood rushing in her ears and the sound of her own heartbeat was all she could hear. From the warmth, she was sure her face was flushed all levels of red. Still, she didnât run, but it was a near thing. She needed to be anywhere else. Desperately.

The Year In Doom & Gloom
Doom & Gloom From The Tomb celebrated its 15th anniversary this year, which is crazy. But what can I say, I keep finding cool live tapes and keep feeling compelled to share them with you ... whoever you are! A lot of this website is just me talking to myself, hashing and rehashing and re-re-hashing various obsessions, getting impossibly niche about some of my favorite artists, trying to shine a light into the darkest corners of music history. How To Start A Taxi Business In Ireland
So, you're thinking about starting a taxi business in Ireland? Thatâs a solid idea! With tourism booming, students hopping around towns, and locals always on the move, the demand for reliable transport in Ireland is stronger than ever. Whether itâs Dublin, Cork, or Galway, people always need a lift.
The taxi world might seem competitive, but with the right setup, smart planning, and customer-first mindset, your business can ride smoothly.
Letâs break it down and help you figure out how to start a taxi business in Ireland, step by step.
Why Ireland?
Before we jump into the logistics, letâs look at why Ireland is a good place to start your taxi business.
High urban mobility: Cities like Dublin are always buzzing.
Tourism: With millions of visitors every year, taxis are in constant demand.
Digital adoption: More people are using taxi apps for convenience.
Supportive regulations: Ireland has clear, accessible rules for taxi operators through the National Transport Authority (NTA).
So if you're wondering how to set up a taxi company in Ireland, you're in the right place at the right time.
Step 1: Decide on Your Business Model
Start by asking yourself: Do I want to drive, manage a fleet, or both?
Here are a few popular options:
Solo driver-owner Ideal if you want to keep things simple and cost-effective.
Taxi fleet business Great for scaling. You manage multiple vehicles and drivers.
App-based taxi service Compete with the likes of Uber and Bolt using your own app or white-label solutions.
Each option has its pros and cons. Going solo gives you control, but managing a fleet can bring in more revenue. Choose what fits your goals, budget, and lifestyle.
Step 2: Get Licensed and Registered
In Ireland, taxis are regulated by the National Transport Authority (NTA). To start operating legally, youâll need:
SPSV license (Small Public Service Vehicle) This is a must for any taxi, hackney, or limousine. Your car needs to pass an NTA inspection.
Taxi driver license Also called the SPSV driver licence. To get this, you'll need to pass the SPSV Entry Test. More details can be found on the NTA website.
Insurance This isnât your standard car insurance. Youâll need SPSV insurance that covers commercial passengers.
Tax registration Register as a sole trader or a company with Revenue. Make sure youâre VAT-compliant if your turnover exceeds thresholds.
Step 3: Choose the Right Vehicle
This is where first impressions count. Your car must:
Be less than 10 years old
Pass the NTA suitability test
Have proper signage (roof sign, decals)
Be wheelchair accessible (if targeting inclusive services)
Pro tip: Go for hybrid or electric vehicles. They're eco-friendly, cheaper to run, and may qualify for government incentives.
Step 4: Branding and Marketing
If youâre starting your own fleet or app-based service, branding is key.
Create a catchy business name Something simple and easy to remember.
Build a website A clean, mobile-friendly site with booking options adds credibility.
Social media presence Use Facebook, Instagram, and Google Business to attract local customers.
Local SEO Optimize your website with terms like "Taxi Business in Ireland" so people find you when they search.
Step 5: Get On The Road Or Build Your Team
If youâre driving yourself, youâre good to go once youâre licensed and insured.
For fleet owners:
Hire licensed drivers with clean driving records.
Set up systems for scheduling, dispatching, and communication.
Use GPS and tracking for safety and efficiency.
Some entrepreneurs even use apps like TaxiCaller, CabGrid, or build a custom app to manage bookings digitally.
Step 6: Stay Compliant and Keep Improving
Once youâre operational, youâll need to keep everything up to date:
Renew licenses and insurance on time
Keep vehicles maintained and clean
Monitor customer feedback
Train drivers regularly on safety and customer service
Running a taxi business isnât just about moving peopleâitâs about creating a service that people trust and rely on.
Real-World Example: A Taxi Business That Clicked
John, a former delivery driver in Galway, started with one hybrid car in 2020. He passed the SPSV test, branded his service as "GreenWay Cabs", and promoted it locally. Two years later, he operates five vehicles and has a 4.9-star rating on Google.
His secret? Friendly service, fair pricing, and an easy-to-use app for local bookings. His story shows how you can grow a taxi business in Ireland from the ground up.
Tips To Stand Out
Offer loyalty programs for regular customers
Use dashcams for added safety
Accept card and digital payments
Partner with hotels or local businesses
Little things go a long way when youâre building customer trust.
Conclusion
Starting a taxi business in Ireland isnât just about getting behind the wheelâitâs about navigating the system, building your brand, and offering great service every time. From getting the right licenses to choosing the best car and setting up a smart business model, thereâs a lot to consider.
But hereâs the thing: if you take your time, stay informed, and commit to top-notch service, youâll build something that lasts.
So whether you're thinking about going solo or planning to launch your own fleet, now you know how to start a taxi business in Ireland the right way. With people always on the move and the demand for reliable transport rising, thereâs plenty of room to grow.
If you're still wondering how to set up a taxi company in Ireland, start small, stay legal, listen to your customers, and drive your business forwardâone ride at a time.

Wedding went well! There were a few minor hiccups, though.
1. Started spotting due to stress even while on birth control.
2. Woke up with an ibs and gerd flareup bc of nerves
3. The pastor decided to insert some of his homophobic views while performing our ceremony (heâs my husbandâs uncle and I honestly wanted to stop and pop him right in his jaw) and everyone was pissed afterwards. Completely unnecessary and irrelevant. Needless to say, I think my MIL will be trying to whoop her baby brothers ass.
Other than that, everything went great! I spent 4 hours getting ready at the salon with one of my bridesmaids, and the quiet chatting and laid back environment helped a lot.
After almost everyone had left, my husbandâs cousins (who are both my best friends and the people Iâve chosen as my honorary sisters and brother) danced to Rocky Road to Dublin. If you would like to see a clip of it, you can see it on my TikTok @/southlandghost3
Now ab to fall asleep and head out in the morning!
