The JCCC has previously hosted plenty of other fan conventions, notably the Anime North Halloween Event and Pretty Heroes. Given their experience with convention hosting and gorgeous venue space, we think they’re the perfect fit.

So, why did this take so long?

Well… the JCCC wasn’t our first pick. Our first pick, who we won’t name, dropped us unexpectedly after months of negotiations. Why? Original DashCon’s reputation. We literally got DashCon’d before the convention had even started!!

While we were expecting this and had backup plans, we were blindsided by a rejection this late into the negotiation process. After reaching out to our other contacts, we settled on the JCCC, but we had to restart the entire process. So much of our planning had to be restarted or paused, which set us way behind schedule. Naturally, we didn’t want to say anything about losing our venue spot until we’d adequately replaced it.

We’re happy to say that the Classic DashCon Venue Struggle is over and done with - and our rental with the JCCC is paid in advance. No $17k hostage situation necessary.

However, all this provokes another obvious question: why did you go public with the project when you hadn’t signed with the venue yet? In short: Strange Aeons’ DashCon: An Extensive Oral History video. We were already knee-deep in the project behind the scenes before finding out she was making a YouTube video about DashCon, pushing the story into the public eye again. The team was concerned that declaring we were organizing DashCon 2 soon after Strange Aeons’ video would imply it was a rush-job inspired by her video. We were far enough along in the initial venue negotiations that we decided to go public with the video rather than after it.

Date & Time

DashCon 2 will be held for one day: Saturday, 5th July 2025. We alluded to using the same weekend as the original DashCon when we first went public, but unfortunately this date wasn’t available at our venue. This does mean it’s pretty close to the American 4th of July - in our defense, we didn’t really think of that, we’re Canadian.

The convention will open to the public at 9:30 AM and close at 9:30 PM. All this information and more will be available on our website.

Admission

Ticket sales to in-person DashCon 2 will open on Feb 22nd! Mark your calendars…

We’ll be processing ticket sales through Simpli Events, an all-Canadian competitor to Eventbrite. You can click here to find the events page.

We’re working on the feasibility of expanding DashCon 2 into a hybrid event, with live-streams of the most anticipated panels/events and some other informal online panels hosted on a private Discord. More information on those will come at a later date.

Vendor and Panel Applications

DashCon 2’s Artist Alley/Vendor's Hall is a space for independent artisans who create print media, handmade crafts, or other merchandise. If you want the opportunity to sell your merchandise at DashCon 2, then you’ll be excited to learn that vendor applications will open on February 1st!

We’re also happy to say that we’re opening panel applications on February 10th! We have a few guest panellists already lined up (including a few we can’t talk about yet), but we’re excited to open applications to everyone with a good idea! All DashCon 2 panels will be moderated by our volunteer team, and we’ll put out more info soon about volunteer sign-ups!

How did you find tumblr?

I really enjoy talking with tumblr users so I thought I'd try posting more prompts to get some conversations started.

I was in a nostalgic mood this week and was trying to remember how I first came to tumblr. It got me thinking that it would be cool to learn other's origin stories. I'll go first.

Even though I'm a big nerd who loves Star Trek (DS9 4 life) and Anime (Fairy Tail forever) it was WordPress that brought me to tumblr. Back in 2010 while in college I worked part time for a WordPress theme shop called Obox Themes. They were looking for new markets and decided that tumblr themes would be a good area to get into. I fell in love with how easy it was to modify my digital home and how there was a whole community of people hacking and releasing themes. Creating a WordPress theme from scratch would have been impossible with my skillset then but with tumblr I could do anything with my handy CSS guide and a few energy drinks.

Over the years what kept bringing me back was the themes. They were funky, weird and sometimes a little broken but who cares. It seemed like the entire web was trying to be grown up but tumblr was Toys R Us, they said it’s ok to be a kid. I loved that. Whenever I felt like I didn’t belong anywhere else I’d come back to tumblr and make a new theme (https://www.tumblr.com/themes/by/nick). I use to love clicking on the installs and seeing what kind of fun folks were using my stuff. What kind of people liked the weird stuff I did. It's your turn. What brought you to tumblr?

— it'll definitely be a conflict of interest later on, but nagi wants you as his community manager. he wants you to manage everything, unlike the OTHER, not you community manager he had before who pestered him about his image and his posts. though, little does he know, you have to do the same as them. just because you're his partner doesn't mean you won't do your job correctly. his brand is sacred.

Now that things are well underway, we’re going to resume our posts highlighting specific designs. Today? We return to the character theme we first visited last week when we introduced the Unreliable Narrator and Poor Little Meow-Meow designs. I keep hearing rumors that many, if not most, Tumblr staff have been laid off and that there are startlingly few people keeping the site running these days. Losing Tumblr would be awful for many reasons, but the most immediately relevant for this post is that nearly all information regarding Andy's history would disappear, leaving him free to engage in any problematic or abusive behavior he wanted without fear of his targets' being tipped off as to his true nature by a simple Google search. I've worked hard to create a comprehensive resource for anyone looking for information about Andy and I would hate to see it vanish.

With that in mind, I've just finished backing up my Tumblr to WordPress. Yes, they're owned by the same company, but WP isn't hemorrhaging money the way Tumblr has been for years, so it's unlikely to go away. I'm still making some tweaks, but most of the work is done and I'll be cross-posting there (manually, ugh) from now on.

Hopefully, this is the final Iggleverse attempt, final as in, I won't just randomly reset it. This is of course the pinned post so if you are just jumping in this is the post you will want to resort to!

A legacy usually has rules and this one is...completely different! This is what is sometimes called a plotacy, that means the only rules are for me to make it a good story!

Despite this, this is very much driven by gameplay, at least a good chunk of it. You're not going to get posed scenes for every thing, only for moments where I feel as a storyteller they are needed.

So there's no goal to fulfil an aspiration or for a sim in generation 3 to pet all the cats (although that is a good idea!) as it really is me playing my game and creating a story for it!

hi hi, i put the source code for my website up on github yesterday (link below), and as most personal blogs by like nerdy folks it doesn't use a CMS or anything but a static site generator (in my case eleventy) which allows you to write blog posts and stuff in templates with usually markdown and then compiles it all to static html files so your site requires barely any resources and doesn't really have ANY attack surface. feel free to look at how i did my site to get a bit of an idea of the possibilities!

I'm seeing multiple folks posting about Tumblr's future. I went digging, and I saw some panic was generated over layoffs. I don't think the platform is going anywhere. They just made a huge donation to Tapestry for integration, for starters. Dying companies do not do things like this.

Automattic (the company behind Tumblr, and WordPress.. and other things) has been re-wiring the backend to run on top of WordPress. For us Tumblr users, this likely won't change anything, but the technological underpinnings will be far more consolidated and thus much better supported. If you look at Automattic's response on the matter, it seems to line up with layoffs.

The list of reasons:

Become more agile and responsive.

Break down silos that have created inefficiencies.

Focus on product quality, doing fewer things better.

Ensure a viable financial model for long-term success.

From my perspective, this all checks out; it is sound. I see this weekly at ${BIG_TECH_CORP}. If the Tumblr specific backend is no longer going to be used, it won't receive resources or priority, thus layoffs. This does not mean Tumblr is dying, it means that the folks responsible for maintaining Tumblr's underpinnings will now be the same folks working on WordPress.

This year, the storyline we are following is dueling conferences. Espionage agencies from all over the world are coming together in the spirit of cooperation and trust, or what passes for it in the spy world, to make allies and show off. It’s JELLYFISH Con!

(Meanwhile, a floor below, the Mystery Writers Conference is plotting...)

One way to enjoy the premise is to make a character. Will you be a scientist with a table at Inventor's Alley? An agent trying to make friends and influence people? An expert lecturer demonstrating the perils of exploding pens? The grizzled con staffer whose job is to hand out name tags to every guest AND all of their aliases, who will use Any Means Necessary to figure out who Seymour Butts is?

When you sign up for Fest, start thinking about how you want to fit into this world. It's not critical, but there are some fun bonus challenges that build on some role play elements. Don't worry about which agency you might be a part of; we will be assigning time-zone-based stations for Fest depending on the demographics of sign ups.

Completing your weekly goals helps save the conference from that week’s threat! (But if you don’t complete them…well…maybe your station’s part of the conference ends up a little more lava-covered than it was before…yes, even though you’re not anywhere near a volcano… Luckily, you can help each other out!)

I don’t write or art! Can I still participate?

Absolutely! If you want, you can only make social goals—hosting or joining watch parties or Discord chats, for example.

We also have fun immersive goals/scavenger hunt activities that don’t involve writing or arting.

Additionally, the ‘creative’ goals don’t have to involve fanfic or fanart; if your weekly goal is to make 5 James Bond memes or three headcanons, we support that!

And if you want to make a “hold my beer” level of goal, we also offer prompt tables and other challenges!

You can also participate without goals during certain weeks or the whole month if you want! 007 Fest is as chill or as high-key as you want to make it.
