Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
Want a wētā? Well why wouldn't you-- they're some of the heaviest insects in the world! Many species of giant wētā can reach up to 35 g (1.2 oz), and egg-laying females of the wētāpunga (Little Barrier giant wētā) was clocked in at 70 g (2.47 oz). That's heavier than a sparrow! Unsurprisingly, due to their weight, wētā are flightless insects.

I was passing through a neighboring town and seeing the lush, green rolling hills and the blushing blueberry fields and the pale green lichens and fern after fern and while my first thought was my god, what a place to live!, my second thought was how many other animals on this earth look around at their habitat and think the very same, and how sweet that is. my old dog used to sit halfway down our hill and close her eyes. she was listening to the wind pass through, the stream go by, the seasons come in and go out without a sound. I’ll bet the birds and the crickets and the caterpillars do the very same.

here's a perfectly healthy Arachnocephalus vestitus to contrast with the oddly injured one i posted a while back. since this one has an intact ovipositor you can see how it blends in between the cerci, leading me to think i'd found a male many times. they're tinier than they look, which makes it hard to really capture that fuzzy texture. i imagine touching one would be like petting lint

a rarely-encountered ant cricket (Myrmecophilus) among Crematogaster ants. these myrmecophiles are adapted to living in ant colonies and solicit food from ants for nourishment.
