aaaand now for October.. somehow? I have no clue how it happened. I'm posting this a little later then I meant to, but there are books that I'm curious about soooo it still feels worth it. I'm especially excited about When the Angels and Lavender house (in part because the premises and in part because the covers are intriguing) also I had to include the milf book, which sounds like it is going to be really entertaining. And I'm a fan of D. N. Bryn and always down for supernatural shenanigans.

The Disability Library

I love books, I love literature, and I love this blog, but it's only been recently that I've really been given the option to explore disabled literature, and I hate that. When I was a kid, all I wanted was to be able to read about characters like me, and now as an adult, all I want is to be able to read a book that takes us seriously.

And so, friends, Romans, countrymen, I present, a special disability and chronic illness booklist, compiled by myself and through the contributions of wonderful members from this site!

The Chronicles of Faerie by O. R. Melling (1993-2003)

American Gwen and her Irish cousin, Findabhair, have long planned a summer of backpacking around Ireland, visiting sites out of the old legends of fairy folk. Bryn hummed a soft tune as she carded through the wool, the sound a sweet counterpoint to the city life happening beyond her fence. At this time of day, it was all children and their older siblings on their way to school. A fair few of them called out to greet her, waving. Their fathers and mothers had done much the same earlier, on their way to work.

She’d stepped forward before she’d even realised, her hand dropping to the hilt of her sword and ready to pull it free. “Stand down,” someone barked. He tutted, not even looking her way as one of his goons stepped forward to warn her back. Syn was on their knees, slumped over onto the marble flooring. They didn’t have antlers but a matted tail poked out from under their long cardigan. They had thick cuffs on their wrists – hands wresting on the floor, barely holding them up – that attached to a chain held by one of the men on either side of them. “Let them go,” she said, voice like steel.

LINE (Soul of the Party, Solaris; Meeting Jasper)

There wasn’t a bout or a duel or a joust on right now, but there were still people thronging throughout the area. Street performers had set up from across the worlds, showing off a dozen different tricks of a dozen different mages. Soul Magic didn’t lend itself to flashy performances, but some of the others definitely did. Solaris watched a Techno Mage spark energy through a line of marionettes, so they played their own instruments and danced without need of strings. Illusionists created whole worlds in the palms of their spectators’ hands, tailoring each one to whoever held it. There were stalls of Charm Witches and Runic Mages, carving and painting and imbuing whatever was requested of them into delicate jewellery or plaques to be placed in houses. He thought he spotted a Feral Mage, all black feathers and shiny beak, but when he looked again there was nothing like that.

"Where is Syn?" Halliel burst into the office without waiting to be admitted. "Have you heard from them recently?" "Halliel." "Sir." She pulled herself back, wings tight in. "I'm just - worried. That they're in trouble." "Their last missive gave the appearance of everything proceeding accordingly." "Yes, but that was then and besides, they could be forged-" "Halliel." GOING (Shapeshifter Wip, Syn; Olympian)

“Verial has been asking for an opening of trade routes, which they claim will be beneficial for both countries.” A buzz of laughter rippled through the room. Syn was alert, awake, focused. Every inch of them locked in on what the king would say next. “In the spirit of such overtures, we thought it best to send you, Prince Jaiel, to head the talks. To show how serious we are.” They were going home. “Father, that sounds terribly dull. It won’t be all board meetings and business lunches, will it?” Jaiel scowled. “I hope not.” They were going home.

GONE (Shapeshifter WIP, Syn; Little Rat Hands)

Syn skipped back a few steps and spun on their heel, dropping to sit on a bench. By the time they were settled in place, their appearance had changed. Their antlers were gone, exchanged for faun coloured floppy ears that draped to their shoulders. Their hair shifted colour to match, shortening and falling out of the bun they'd tied it up in. They caught the tipped earrings that fell from their ears and tucked them into a pocket. Nothing they could do about their clothes, but it was never about hiding fully anyway. For a final touch they rounded out their cheeks, losing the sharpness of their high cheekbones, and gave themself a small tail under their coat.

Book Review - How to Win a Wager &  Bite Your Neighbor by D. N. Bryn

I recently finished reading How to win a Wager & Bite Your Neighbor by D. N. Bryn ( @brynwrites ), and I wanted to write a review to show my support and share my thoughts about this fantastic book.

Though my review touches on key themes and plot points from the book, there are no big spoilers in it. I’ve still put it under the cut though in case you’d like to read the book before reading this. How to Bite Your Neighbor & Win a Wager is a slow-burn romance novel by D.N. Bryn, that also happens to include side-plots regarding vampire rights and committing espionage against an evil pharmaceutical company.

“Wesley didn’t tell his legs to move, but neither did he tell his lungs to breathe or his heart to beat. They did so because they were born to, and he was born to run into Vincent’s arms.”

This quote occurs very late in the book, but I feel it perfectly describes the dynamic chemistry and slow burn relationship Wesley has with Vincent. Also, I didn’t think it was possible for two characters to be so horny and yet so wildly oblivious.

This book was fantastic. I got the horny, vampire fantasy that I bought the book for, but I also received the gradual build to a true, romantic relationship between Wesley and Vincent, as well as an enthralling mystery about the shady pharmaceutical company, Vitalis-Barron, that pretty much owns the town. 

Without spoiling anything, I want to touch on some key things I really liked about the book. For example, I really liked how morally grey Wesley’s character is, as Kendall, his best friend, describes it. His whole character arc as well is very satisfying as he comes to terms with a lot of his trauma and learns to redeem himself. 

I liked all of the meta/self-referential moments in the book in the form of comics and video games, and how it was made a part of the world-building instead of being too jokey or fourth wall breaking. The same thing about the true villains, Vitalis-Barron - it wasn’t too jokey, no “dur-hur evil pharmaceuticals” - no man these people are evil and have a deep rooted history in being evil, as most corporations do. 

The world-building and the politics about being a vampire in general and how vampires live on thin, marginalized lines on the edge of society was also incredibly well done. I love books that take classic vampire myths and decide what to keep and kill from them, as well as recontextualizing them with what it may look like today in a more modern society. Vincent’s experience being a vampire and a semi-closeted gay man explores a lot of what that would look like, but also draws an excellent parallel that gives poignant insight on what it is like to be disabled and LGBTQIA+ in today’s society. I’m sure this was an on-purpose parallel done by the author, and it was incredibly well done.

One more excellent thing D. N. Bryn does with the storytelling is how the miscommunication as a romance trope is executed in a way that is believable and moves the story along. Each character has an incredibly valid, albeit dubiously ethical reason to not tell each other what they really want to. I never once felt taken out of the romance, the intrigue, or the suspense of the plot by the miscommunication issues. It was so well done, I had to put the book down and calm down at the blowup/reveal point, because of how stressed out I was about it.

Overall this was a fantastic book! I give it 5/5, and I can’t wait to read D.N. Bryn’s sequel to this, How to Sell Your Blood and Fall In Love, when it comes out. I am in the midst of the most flamboyant and obnoxious phase of debauchery of my life. This week alone I have read (and RE-READ) three books where the main characters are a mlm couple. I have watched (and RE-WATCHED) Heartstopper s2 and Red, White & Royal Blue. I am coming down from a high where these forms of media are the only thing I can think about. Conversations are dull unless they include such topics. All I can think about is the Waterloo Vase. The leaves of a silver maple. Rio.

Books I read this month that have become an integral piece of my personality: How to Bite Your Neighbor and Win a Wager, and How to Sell Your Blood and Fall in Love - both written by the brilliant D. N. Bryn. Obviously, Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston. (Also, why is there no Oxford comma in the title? Henry would be indisposed). And of course, the Heartstopper comics. I am going to be a shell of myself until the new book comes out. And if there is a sequel to RWRB I am going to have to hornswoggle my way through life as a sane person, and it will tear me apart to behave. I do not know how I will do it, but I will have to.

If anyone might have some suggestions on what I can read to either cleanse my pallet or completely drown it, I would be forever grateful. My life is empty without idiots in love.

My next hyper focus: quite possibly will be American/English queer history. I want to be the type of person that can detect history through a conversation and present facts about the gays from the past. I want to speak in recited letters and literature.

Probably the best vampire romance books out there. There's literally biting on like page two of book one. It's like Bryn looked at the entire genre and said "But what if only the sexy parts?" And then threw in a sprinkle of systemic injustice and evil scientists for funsies.

I've honestly been doing kind of a terrible job of reading anything that doesn't live on tumblr or ao3 lately, but that does sound like something I'd very possibly be interested in.
