Have you heard about mole genders?

I’ve heard of this concept in sci-fi, but thought it was absolutely made up. I know some fish and frogs can change genders, but not in cycles like this. Wild. If I slapped this down in some alien world without explanation, I’d laugh in my own face. But no, real biology IS that bizarre.

Hello lovely Nature Noticers. It is time for today's thread! Follow me, and we'll delve deep into the subterranean and subversive world of Talpa europaea, the common European mole. We'll begin with a bombshell - there are no female moles.

Genetic researchers have recently discovered that female moles have reproductive organs unlike any other mammal. If measured by the standards of other species, there are no fully female moles. Instead, there are males and individuals that would be considered intersex.

So, lets look at how this works. Female Moles are called Sows. Sows have both ovarian AND testicular tissue They also have vaginas that disappear between breeding seasons!

Most of the year, female moles look and behave like males. They have masculinised genitals, with no external vagina + an enlarged clitoris. When this point in the year arrives, mating season begins. At this point the Sow's testosterone levels drop + they develop a vagina.

As is typical for mammals, Sows are equipped with two X chromosomes and Boars with an X and a Y chromosome. Unlike any other mammals Sows simultaneously develop functional ovarian and testicular tissues united in one organ, the 'ovotestis'. This is unique to Moles.

This testicular tissue does not produce sperm. It does however, produce large amounts of the sex hormone testosterone, meaning that Sows have similar testosterone levels to the Boars -except during mating season.

Scientists have hypothesized that these high levels of testosterone provide an adaptive advantage for the mole's underground life - providing added muscle mass for Sows who need to dig burrows and fight for resources for their offspring.

This is a dynamic process - the ovarian tissue that makes eggs and gets larger during breeding, then regresses. Outside of breeding season the testicular tissue, expands until it’s larger than the ovarian end - flooding the Sow's system with testosterone.

This explains why female moles have male-like genitalia... But it doesn't explain how patch of testicular tissue forms in female moles even though they do not have a Y chromosome. Up until recently the Y chromosome was thought to be fundamental to male sex determination.

In 2020 a team of molecular geneticists studied the female mole's ability to produce testicular tissue without a Y chromosome. They found that changes in the structure of the Mole's genome that lead to altered control of genetic activity.

But what does this mean? In short the female mole shows us that evolution doesn't work in the way that we have assumed since Darwin - their DNA changes within the living organism.

Since Darwin, it has been generally accepted that the different appearances of living organisms are the result of gradual changes in genetic makeup that have been passed onto subsequent generations - but Moles experience changes in the regulatory regions belonging to sex genes.

The researchers found that female moles do not have a Y chromosone but they do have a triple CYP17A1 gene. CYP17A1 is involved in the formation of steroid hormones + the triplication of this gene in the mole creates a dynamic sex regulatory system.

This dynamic process appends additional regulatory sequences to the gene and leads to an increased production of male sex hormones in the ovotestes of female moles, especially more testosterone.

What the intersexual mole shows us is how important the three-dimensional organization of the genome is for evolution. Nature makes use of existing developmental genes and rearranges them to create a characteristic such as intersexuality.

We see in the mole that evolution is not a linear process, arranged around the principle of Euclidian geometry. It is rather a topological process - a structure cast in rubber that is responsive and adaptive to the environment.

The mole also reminds us of the complexity of sexual development. The shifting sexual characteristics of the mole shows how the process of sexual development can, and does result in a wide range of natural variations.

this might be a stupid question, but if theres a protein that multiple organisms need, wouldn't the a t g c genetic code for it be the same for different species? or at least closely related species? so theoretically some prompts/sequences should have multiple fitting organisms or closest fitting organisms

not a stupid question, i'll try to answer it to the best of my understanding, but if anyone has anything to add, please do.

put shortly: you're right! if multiple organisms need a certain protein, the code in their DNA is generally the same in that region.

from a genetics perspective, all organisms are actually extremely similar. i'm sure you've heard that we humans share more than half our genetic information with bananas and such.

this is just a factor of how evolution works. every so often, a mutation occurs in an organism's genome, which has a chance to increase the fitness of that organism, which allows it to have more offspring, which changes the mix of alleles in the population. and this is how we get different species of things.

but, because we all share a common ancestor from a long, long, long, long time ago, we do maintain some similarities, especially in regions that code for things essential to life.

those regions where things are *different* is where we're able to tell one species from another, differentiating moths from trees and such. but, overall, all living organisms have a whole lot in common.

"Animal cooperation often has nothing to do with survival or reproduction, but is a form of pleasure in itself. 'To take flight in flocks merely for pleasure is quite common among all sorts of birds,' [Kropotkin] writes. [He] multiplies examples of social play: pairs of vultures wheeling about for their own entertainment, hares so keen to box with other species that they occasionally (and unwisely) approach foxes, flocks of birds performing military-style maneuvers, bands of squirrels coming together for wrestling and similar games:

We know at the present time that all animals, beginning with the ants, going on to the birds, and ending with the highest mammals, are fond of plays, wrestling, running after each other, trying to capture each other, teasing each other, and so on. And while many plays are, so to speak, a school for the proper behavior of the young in mature life, there are others which, apart from their utilitarian purposes, are, together with dancing and singing, mere manifestations of an excess of forces — 'the joy of life,' and a desire to communicate in some way or another with other individuals of the same or of other species — in short, a manifestation of sociability proper, which is a distinctive feature of all the animal world.

To exercise one’s capacities to their fullest extent is to take pleasure in one’s own existence, and with sociable creatures, such pleasures are proportionally magnified when performed in company. From the Russian perspective, this does not need to be explained. It is simply what life is. We don’t have to explain why creatures desire to be alive. Life is an end in itself. And if what being alive actually consists of is having powers — to run, jump, fight, fly through the air — then surely the exercise of such powers as an end in itself does not have to be explained either. It’s just an extension of the same principle.

Friedrich Schiller had already argued in 1795 that it was precisely in play that we find the origins of self-consciousness, and hence freedom, and hence morality. 'Man plays only when he is in the full sense of the word a man,' Schiller wrote in his On the Aesthetic Education of Man, 'and he is only wholly a Man when he is playing.' If so, and if Kropotkin was right, then glimmers of freedom, or even of moral life, begin to appear everywhere around us.

It’s hardly surprising, then, that this aspect of Kropotkin’s argument was ignored by the neo-Darwinists. Unlike 'the problem of altruism,' cooperation for pleasure, as an end in itself, simply could not be recuperated for ideological purposes. In fact, the version of the struggle for existence that emerged over the twentieth century had even less room for play than the older Victorian one. Herbert Spencer himself had no problem with the idea of animal play as purposeless, a mere enjoyment of surplus energy. Just as a successful industrialist or salesman could go home and play a nice game of cribbage or polo, why should those animals that succeeded in the struggle for existence not also have a bit of fun? But in the new full-blown capitalist version of evolution, where the drive for accumulation had no limits, life was no longer an end in itself, but a mere instrument for the propagation of DNA sequences — and so the very existence of play was something of a scandal."

Back on my Tesla, Vash and Knives weren’t spontaneous plant births bullshit, but if it was true that Independents were just a product of a new phase of SEEDS engineering to make self-reproducing Plants, it would make everything so much juicer in all the wrong ways. Rem thinks they’re a miracle but Rem lied because Rem was a navigator and not a SEEDS scientist and what she thought was something so miraculous had actually been planned and charted in a sterile lab somewhere in the bowels of the ship she was steering through the stars. In trimax she was going to take the twins into cryosleep with her but that would have never happened because here, the twins were something everyone knew about already. Vash was in the separate file for a reason. SEEDS was trying to upgrade their product and Knives was the only one showing promise. Tesla wasn’t an aberration ripped apart to because they wanted to see what made her tick, she was a failed experiment. Dissected to see where they went wrong. How absolutely devastated and enraged Knives would be. No, he and his brother and mutilated sister were not a fluke of the universe, they weren’t divine retribution or the next step in evolution, they weren’t something humans don’t understand, they were planned and molded and very much understood. Knives and Vash and Tesla can trace their origins back to science lab computers of SEEDS 5, back to the very first trial run of DNA sequencing that would help determine just how to make Plants give birth. Yes, Dr. Conrad knew. He regarded it the same way one might regard the novelty of a self-reproducing plant or fish or frog or organism, until he saw Tesla, tiny and perfect and very much more human than Plant. Vowed never to make the same mistake after her, and then then twins were born, more human than Plant, and that meant that they still hadn’t got the calculations right. Angels? Miracles? At the end of the day, Knives and Vash and poor Tesla would be just the byproduct of another level of human arrogance and grasping and tampering and greed, one dead because of it, and the other two trying desperately to rage against the very thing that brought them into existence.

The first modern humans to take up permanent residence in Europe settled in Crimea around 37,000 years ago, according to an analysis of their DNA. Within 7,000 years, their descendants gave rise to a culture that included Venus figurines, stone tools and jewelry.

Although anthropologists have long known that some human groups began leaving Africa around 60,000 years ago, most of them were nomadic, not staying long in any particular area. And around 40,000 years ago, a supervolcano in southern Italy wiped out most of the humans and Neanderthals in Europe. These events have led anthropologists to wonder when the ancestors of today's Europeans arrived and decided to settle down.

An international team of researchers now believes they have found Europe's first permanent residents among a collection of skeletons from the site of Buran-Kaya III on the Crimean Peninsula. They published their findings Oct. 23 in the journal Nature Ecology and Evolution.

Buran-Kaya III, a cave site originally discovered in 1990, boasts rich deposits of human activity dating from the Middle Paleolithic to the Middle Ages — a span of at least 50,000 years. But archaeologists are most interested in layers dating from 38,000 to 34,000 years ago, as they include objects such as stone tools and carved bones similar to artifacts from the Gravettian culture. This culture spread across Europe starting about 33,000 years ago, which suggests that Buran-Kaya may be the earliest evidence of permanent settlements in Europe and may have given rise to the Gravettian culture.

To investigate the idea that the Buran-Kaya people were the ancestors of the Gravettian toolmakers, the research team, led by paleogenomics experts Eva-Maria Geigl and Thierry Grange of France's National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), sequenced the genomes of two male skeletons found at Buran-Kaya that were carbon-dated to about 35,800 to 37,500 years ago.

My Ride: Sunshine Forever

A round of applause for Mork, Tawan, and this show for giving us such a sweet, satisfying ending for our two sunshine boys. I loved Mork’s quest to reach Tawan, I loved his simple cliffside confession, I loved their sweet kiss, and I loved the glimpses we got of their lovely, mutually supportive relationship both when they got back to Bangkok and when they settled in Chiang Rai four years later. I have no doubt they will be very happy together and I felt so much joy watching them ride off into the sunset together. (I’m going to just continue to ignore the side romances in this show, which I memory-holed after my first watch and fully intend to do again).

What I liked most about the final conflict between the two of them was how grounded it felt by the events of the previous episodes. Because the show built such a clear arc for Mork and Tawan, we understood immediately what was happening—Mork was comforting his ex, who was obviously trying to come crawling back, because he is a kind person who can’t hold a grudge to save his life (let me help you, Mork, my hateration could power a small nation). And he was not ashamed when Tawan interrupted them because he was not doing anything wrong, and he was just happy to see Tawan as always. Tawan knows him well enough that he should have been able to perceive all that, but his confidence has been so shaken by that asshole Por that he doubts what he already knows about Mork’s feelings. And so Mork has to go on his final quest to make his feelings crystal clear (while conquering his own fear of heights) and finally make it official.

And if you know me, you know I have to end by pointing out how very similar the structure of this final conflict, and the finale as a whole, was to La Pluie. Everything, from the pacing and sequencing—resolving all the side plots first before moving to the main—and the beats—big public confession, followed by quiet get together, followed by a quest and a big emotional climax, then a happy epilogue—to the major themes—clear communication is a necessary condition for a happy relationship—were the same in both show’s finales. The characters and the details are different, but it’s clearly the same DNA underlying both stories. I loved revisiting My Ride having seen this writing team’s next project and it was fun to track the evolution of their storytelling. I will be seated for whatever they decide to make next.

The beginnings of life on Earth are still poorly understood. If the hypothesis of a contribution by meteorites of whole organisms, close to bacteria, has been put forward, it now seems highly improbable. Organic matter would have been formed by the chemical evolution of molecules containing carbon in a hot environment, without oxygen, swept by ultraviolet radiation and electrical discharges from lightning. Interactions of this material have arisen from complex biological polymers, such as DNA and proteins, then from cells, without the sequence of events being clearly elucidated. One finds in old rocks of 3800 million years (Ma) an isotopic composition of carbon characteristic of the living world. The oldest evidence of primitive life are bacterial microfossils and fossils of stromatolites, reefs built by bacteria, 3500 Ma old. Life would therefore have appeared very early in the history of the Earth, almost at the time of the formation of first rocks.

Throughout the Precambrian, organisms diversified: initially without a nucleus (prokaryote) and unicellular, cells with a nucleus (eukaryote) and multicellular organisms, the first plant and animal life forms appeared late. In the Cambrian, diversification accelerated and new anatomy emerged that prefigured the large groups of animals today. This milestone event was accompanied by massive biomineralization that left numerous fossil traces. Until today, organizations have continued to evolve and diversify. They have colonized all aquatic and terrestrial environments, even the most extreme, going through great extinctions followed by periods of diversification. Life is intimately linked to the terrestrial environment: bacterial photosynthesis has formed the oxygenated atmosphere and the ozone layer, forests have formed carbon reserves and affected CO2 levels. And this modification, as well as those due to geological events and meteorite impacts, has in turn influenced life. This long history continues and the threats that humans pose to the current biodiversity and their own existence will not stop the adaptation of living beings.

For decades, the Y chromosome—one of the two human sex chromosomes—has been notoriously challenging for the genomics community to sequence due to the complexity of its structure. Now, this elusive area of the genome has been fully sequenced, a feat that finally completes the set of end-to-end human chromosomes and adds 30 million new bases to the human genome reference, mostly from challenging-to-sequence satellite DNA.
