I was inspired by a recent reddit AMA with a (former) dev for the sims response to a fan asking about the Bella mystery:

I drew this in the vintage art software predecessor to mspaint from the 80s, PC Paintbrush by zsoft.

It only allows for 4 colors but a lot can be accomplished with texture.

managed to get windows 3.1 running on dosbox and installed audio and video drivers so i could experience mario teaches typing 2

only for it to refuse to launch without having me register my copy of the game with a company that either is defunct or does not do this stuff anymore

will look into it later but man i just wanted to see the silly mario head for myself why do i have to put in actual effort

Been an interesting day of working my way around DOS programming. Found a few new ways to crash programs and DosBox.

But I also managed to figure out:

Keyboard event handling

Mouse event handling

Handling graphic modes

Double buffering

PC speaker playback

I’m not exactly sure what led to some of the crashes, but this is already more than I need for what I’d like to do.

It would probably be a good idea to get FreeDOS or maybe even an older Windows VM working, but this is a very good start.

I already downloaded the disc .iso and mounted it. But its from 1995 and there's no autorun and I have no idea how the hell to get DOSbox to read a virtual drive, or even if DOSbox has to be customized first to know what to do with Windows 3.1 shit. Just because I have the thing, doesn't mean I understand how it works or how the hell to make it do what I want.
