Steam Farming Fest Sale!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Steam's got a farmin' themed sale going on right now, with nearly every PC Story of Seasons and Rune Factory game on sale for 20 bucks or less... but also, it seems the entire Marvelous catalog is on there! So if you wanted to try out the Rune Factory-adjacent dungeon crawler, Silent Hope, that's here too, along with the Marvelous-published non-Bokumono farm sim, Sakuna of Rice and Ruin.
Wow, they even have other games Yasuhiro Wada, creator of the Story of Seasons series, was executive producer on. Like Little King's Story and No More Heroes!
Oh, and there's a free farming themed Avatar Frame on Steam's Point Shop that's pretty cute.

So I recently saw a demo video for an upcoming mech-action game ‘Mecha Break’, which if you haven’t heard of it, looks like basically ‘Armored Core, now with hilariously blatant and obvious waifu bait’ in the form of sexy bombshell pilot player-characters that you can customize and have strut sexily around a hub-world between missions.
The thing is though, I can’t help but think there is something very interesting and honestly FUN about the idea of a mech game with a customizable Pilot-PC and a hub-world that you can explore ‘on-foot’ between missions. That just feels like something that would add so much fun immersion into a game like this.
Like the general rule of mech-games is that you are always essentially playing as the mech, and nothing else. With everything else like mech-customization and mission selection being done purely through menu-interfaces.
But with an actual Pilot-PC and an explorable hub-level, I feel like things get a lot more INTERESTING. Like now you can have fun with incorporating all those menus diagetically into the hub-world. Like actually going to the hanger to build and customize your mech, going to a shop to purchase new equipment, and of course the opportunity for plenty of RPG elements like chatting with other characters, finding items, reading documents and just simple exploration. And even some especially fun and egregious stuff like actually going through the full process of prepping and boarding your mech and going through the entire launch sequence before a mission.
And I can’t help but feel like that makes things at least a bit more fun and engaging overall? Sure it’s all so much ‘fluff’ and the dreaded word ‘filler’, but you know what? I think having some fluff and filler is a GOOD THING.
Honestly I feel like this is probably the one thing I really wish we’d gotten in Armored Core 6. Like yes, I know there is a Watsonian excuse for why you can’t have a Pilot-PC, but that game was made in the same engine as Elden Ring, Sekiro, Dark Souls and basically all of FromSofts other games. Would it really have been so hard to port over the PC assets from Elden Ring to make Pilot-PCs and a Firelink/Roundtable Hold-esque hub-world to hang out in and explore between missions?
Now sure, I realize that this level of immersion in a mech game wouldn’t be for everyone. Some people prefer the streamlined, simplified ‘go through some menus then play missions’ framework. But I also feel like this would be easy enough to accommodate for by having an option to easily access all of the between-mission menus and interfaces without running around the hubworld? Like say your PCs quarters in/aboard the homebase/spaceship/carrier/etc has an interface that lets them/you ‘remotely’ access all the mech-customization, parts-purchasing, mission-selection, etc. and skip the immersive fluff if you wish.
(Though perhaps with the caveat that if you do this too much, your character develops a reputation for being reclusive, anti-social shut-in which has potential consequences for the story XD)
I even think there’s a lot potential in the concept of a customizable Pilot-PC alone, aside from just being a sexy waifu. Like one game that actually did some REALLY interesting stuff with this concept was DAEMON X MACHINA from a few years back. That game not only gave you a customizable Pilot Player Character, it actually gave the customizations tangible effects on gameplay in the form of your character being able to get various cybernetic augmentations through a skill tree that gave different bonus’s to your piloting ability as you gradually turn your character into a full cyborg over the course of a playthrough.
I think we all understand value of a good hub-level in video games, particularly games that are very mission-based (shoutout to Hitman WoA’s Freelancer-mode Safehouse), and I think there’s a lot of there for the mecha-action genre.

Stopped at a local game store, Mega Media Exchange in Madison Wisconsin, while out and about and found that the fine art of interpretive replacement box art is still alive and well in some corners of the universe.
The fact that someone referenced the old Warner Brothers short "I Love to Singa" particularly made my day.

Key Visuals for Mori's first game since BlazBlue, an as-of-yet untitled "action game" by Studio Flare
I don't know how much I will be following the coverage of this game on this blog. I've got no idea how relevant it will be to the BlazBlue series. Character designs we've seen lead me to believe it could be a spiritual sequel, but I could be proven wrong.
In another post I might take a closer look at these images and make some speculation. For today, I'd like to go over what we know about this upcoming game from the following articles:
Automaton Media
Gamer
Game Watch
Most interesting among these sources, in my opinion, was an interview with Mori himself discussing the ideology of Studio Flare as a game studio. I really like the way he and the team want to approach game design. As a creator myself, I share the same thoughts. I definitely recommend reading it if you're able.
Now, for the information we have from the above sources!
Mori describes it as a 2.5D "action game" with an anime style. Combat will not be turn based. The game will utilize the Unreal Engine.
At this time Studio Flare is still working to hire people for the game's team. They're hiring in several positions, but it seems like what they need most right now is more programmers.
The people at Studio Flare seem to want to be pretty transparent about their development process as they go through it. They want people to be able to share in the excitement of what they're creating. Ultimately, they want Studio Flare to approach all their games this way: regularly engaging with audiences about their projects, sharing the creation process, balancing listening to fan feedback and sharing their own visions. Mori describes this ideal method as similar to showing a friend a game you like, and asking them what they think about it.
In an interview, Mori teased that they may start sharing character designs and full game models as soon as they are finished and finalized.
The mystery Rachelface character from Mori's Twitter header image and his previous story concept post features in all of these images, indicating she may be the game's protagonist- though her outfit is drastically different, so this may be a different character.
Mori is actually the vice president of Studio Flare, as well as the head of Development/head Producer. The president of the company is Toshinori Aoki, known for his work on Muramasa: The Demon Blade and Daemon X Machina.
Studio Flare is being funded by NetEase, a company known for games like Identity V, Diablo Immortal, and Cyber Hunter.
Mori claims the goal of Studio Flare is to focus on making interesting, fun games, prioritizing creativity and passion above "making money."

There was a game on switch a while ago, Daemon X Machina. Basically it was a not amazing (but not horrible) mecha game along the lines of Armored Core it was all and all a very bland game with both performance and gameplay issues but one thing about that game stood out to me. It was that you could upgrade your pilot, but upgrades were in the form of cybernetic enchantments.
First couple of upgrades barely noticable, eye colour changes, a handful of seam lines on your face. Around the middle you replace your legs with robotic replacements, hands and arms become mechanized limbs. And depending on the upgrade you either got bulky industrial style parts, blade thin aeronatic frames, or a middle ground with synthetic muscle fibers to give the limb some semblance of humanity.
And then you replace your torso. Your character is now a head on a mechanized body. An organic cockpit piloting a metal body, not unlike the robot you yourself pilot. The last upgrade is a full head replacement. Assumedly the only thing remaining of your body is the brain that's now floating in your head part.
The story was ass but Daemon X Machina did one thing very well though this system. It asked the player "how far are you willing to go". Because the thing is that none of these upgrades were mandatory, there were benefits yes but none of them were absolutely vital to success. The whole system walked a very finely tuned line. What are you willing to give up for better performance? Your legs? Your arms? Your chest and heart? Everything? Or will you stay human and handicap yourself? It was fascinating to see where people drew the line. How far they were willing to disassemble the characters they had themselves created. some people gave up everything, others rejected everything. Sometimes upgrades were chosen not based on stats but based on the look of the enhancement.
---
I have lots of ideas but sadly never enough energy/expertise to realize them. Which just results in daydreaming so sometimes I daydream of a game.
In it the world is pushed to the brink of survival by monsters. And the player characters who are tasked with fighting against those monsters are given a choice.
They can augment themselves with monster parts, doing the same thing as Daemon X Machina. Your hands become talons, your legs become claws. You can jump higher, run faster. Wings and tails, horns and internal organs. Bulky augments let you wield larger weapons, tote a minigun or a rocket pod around easily. Lithe augments let you move quicker, run faster, jump higher. Push the limits until the only weapons you need are your own savage limbs. till you can spew hellish fire from your maw, till you can generate a million volts with your internal organs, till you can rip out monsters throats with your teeth and taste their cobalt blue blood dripping down your face, the same kind of blood that now runs though your veins.
Or you could not. Hunt down what monsters you can with what you have. Turn in parts to the research team. Use your enemies strengths not as implants but as technology. You kill a mantis monster and the research team hands you a sword forged from it's scythes, an invisible monster becomes a stealth field generator. You break your opponents down and turn them into weapons, armor, tools, all built for human hands to handle.
And then you watch people draw their lines. Who augments their body and who remains a steadfast human. And who tries to walk their own path somewhere down the middle. What augments do people pick? Do they choose function or appearance? Give players multiplayer, how do they react when faced with the choices of others? Maybe they split apart into humans and augmented, maybe the lines that they draw separate them from each other. Or maybe they find out that hunting monsters tends to go better when humans and augmented work together, the precision and versatility of humans synergizing with the raw versatility of augmented.
But that's just a daydream

Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion ‘Story’ trailer, digital pre-orders now available - Gematsu
Tumblr media
Publisher Marvelous and developer First Studio have released the official story trailer for Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion, as well as opened digital pre-orders across all consoles and Steam. An English version of the “Combat Support System: Particle Armaments Trailer” trailer, which was previously released in Japanese, was also released.
Here are the latest details:
The new story trailer, which debuted on IGN Live, offers a look at some of the mysterious enemies, supporting characters, and stylish action-combat against monsters and Arsenals that players will experience through the game’s thrilling narrative.
Additionally, Daemon X Machina series producer Kenichiro Tsukuda joined IGN to discuss insights behind the move from large mechs to compact armored suits and their customizable nature, the unique asynchronous multiplayer elements in the game, and reveal more about the conflict between humans, Outers, and Immortals that drives the story. The publisher has also opened digital pre-orders on all platforms in the Americas, available as a standard edition for $69.99; a Digital Deluxe edition, which includes the game and access to substantial post-launch downloadable content, featuring new story content and customization options for your Arsenal and Outer, for $89.99; and a Super Digital Deluxe edition, which includes the game, the aforementioned downloadable content sets, a digital soundtrack, and a digital art book, for $99.99. All digital pre-orders will get the “Special Equipment Set” downloadable content as a bonus, which includes the “Bahamut” Arsenal Skin, the Beguiling Suit (Outer Suit), and the Special Equipment – Victorious Gleam (Laser Blade), as well as the “Purchase Bonus Item Set” downloadable content, which includes the Special Equipment – Variable Breadth (Longbow), Bonus Attachment Set 1, and Bonus Item Set.
The latest Gameplay Systems video delves into the functionality of the particle weapon Combat Support System, a preinstalled modification for Arsenal body armor providing Outers with powerful particle armaments. The three basic systems include Assault Shift (AS), which automatically targets and shoots enemies, Guard Shift (GS), offering a directional shield that nullifies attacks, and Wing Shift (WS), giving players the ability to fly at high speeds. Using these particle armaments consumes a limited resource, Femto, giving Outers a powerful temporary boost to be used strategically.
Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion is due out for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, and PC via Steam on September 5 worldwide.

One thing about daemon x machina that bothers me is that the rookie shows up and within (presumably) days maybe months starts absolutely BODY-ING ace pilots like Savior, Reaper, Nameless, and all of terrors, and everyone is just like "oh way really promising baby upstart" instead of "oh you REGULARLY win 3 on 1s against everyone we're TERRIFIED of you"
