The fact that Auguste waited 12 years for a little brother and then only got to have him for the same amount of time. At 13, he got his so desired baby brother. At almost 13, Laurent lost his most devoted and loved older brother, having to navigate life alone until Damen came along. Auguste and Nicaise's relation with Laurent are my roman empire in the Capri Universe. Like, imagine how Laurent would cherish and care for Nicaise. Imagine them getting to heal together, and Laurent finally talking freely about Auguste, telling Nicaise stories about his older brother. Imagine him making peace with himself and finally accepting Auguste's death by starting to bring back old memories and traditions he now does with Nicaise as a way to keep the one who taught him to be a big brother alive somehow. Imagine Nicaise finally being loved as fiercely as Laurent had been by Auguste once. His love echoing through time despite him being physically gone as he was the first who taught Laurent to love, and now Laurent is the one teaching Nicaise. They are all deeply intertwined by love, and it's so beautiful it hurts.

• Can we just take a second to remember that us humans usually start forming stable memories around age 4 or 5? That means out of the almost 14 years Laurent had with his brother, he only really knew him—like, consciously—for maybe 8 to 10 years… and even with just that, he knew exactly how Auguste would’ve reacted to meeting Damen (if that had ever happened).

• I’m pretty sure that throughout book two (and book three), Laurent must’ve gotten chills whenever Damen did or said something that had echoes of his brother, like watching Auguste come back from war after six years, but in someone else’s body and with a whole different culture in his blood. I can totally picture Laurent lying awake at night in that tent during the Prince’s Gambit campaign, just thinking: shit, why are they so alike!?

• He literally couldn’t hold it in at some point and said: “—Auguste was like you,” said Laurent. “He had no instinct for deception, which meant he couldn’t recognize it in others.”

And: “—I wanted to tell you this, because you…” he said, like he was pushing the words out, “...you remind me of him. He was the best man I ever knew. You deserve to know that.”

It breaks my heart that, even if Damen and Laurent have the longest, most peaceful and prosperous reign in history, they’re not immune to the passing of time.

I imagine Damen will be the first to go, peacefully in his bed after he’s too weak to carry on, holding Laurent’s hand and smiling because his heart is so full of love and joy.

I imagine Laurent (old and gray and still so beautiful) will be solemn, and arrange a funeral fit for a god. He will then quietly focus on work, tending to the kingdom/empire’s affairs, ensuring all will be well, tidying up unfinished business.

I imagine he will retire to his empty bed one night, and not rise in the morning. He will go peacefully in his sleep, his hand resting on Damen’s empty side of the bed, with a smile on his face because his husband and his brother were waiting for him.

Finished reading the Captive Prince series for the first time last week, and I genuinely love how Damen ends up sent to Vere because he genuinely couldn't see Kastor's treachery until it was too late, he refused to believe Kastor would harm him or commit treason, even when others warned him. And even by the end of the last book, he struggles to reconcile this with who his brother was, even after everything Kastor has done to him and their father.

And yet. Damen's first assumption on hearing Auguste described is that Laurent must have hated him. The golden prince, the heir, surpassing Laurent in strength and skill, etc. Laurent must hate him, because what brother wouldn't hate someone like that? Like, Damen, how is that your first assumption and yet you were so blind to your own brother's hatred until he betrayed you?

How much on chance she left that Laurent would not kill him?

When did she realize that Laurent is too much like her and predicted, accurately --hopefully?-- that they'll fall in love.

and After all that, when her plans worked, what she has left with is
