David Bowie, Ziggy Stardust album cover shoot by Brian Ward — January 13, 1972 | x
According to Ward, Bowie had phoned him requesting a shooting location resembling a "Brooklyn alley scene" where he could appear alone like an alien being. "He was playing on this man from Mars thing. He wanted to come over like a real stranger, like a science fiction movie." Ward had rented a space upstairs at #29 on the first floor of the Heddon Street building for his photographic studio.

People stared at the makeup on his face
Laughed at his long black hair, his animal grace
And he was alright, the band was all together
Yes he was alright, the song went on forever
He was awful nice, really quite out of sight and he sang all night long

At the Hammersmith Odeon in London, David Bowie appears as Ziggy Stardust for the last time, explaining: "Not only is this the last show of the tour, but it's the last show that we'll ever do." Many take this to mean Bowie was retiring from music altogether, though Bowie just means he is retiring Stardust. This show is later made into a movie directed by D.A. Pennebaker called Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars.
