The Pigeon Tunnel Review- The Title Says It All, Morris Delves Deep Into this Man's Life
Error Morris is a celebrated documentarian who has made such films as A Fog of War, Standard Operating Procedure, and A Thin Blue Line. Dealing with politics, the police, and corrupt businesses. His latest film doesn’t deal with as serious subject matter as those. It’s about one of the most beloved authors in English literature John Le Carre aka David Cornwall. He has a lot of secrets he shares…

Something else that I think would be funny is somebody mentioning Alan's accent reminds them of Daphne and then that person asking him if they know each other 🤣
"OH SURE, WHAT DO YOU THINK WE ALL KNOW EACH OTHER?!"
It'd be funny if David asked it but then that wouldn't really work since she's his mother. He can clearly tell they have different dialects from different parts of England 🙂

David John Morris — Wyld Love Songs (Hinterground)
Tumblr media
Wyld Love Songs by David John Morris
David John Morris has always had a close, comfortable relationship with the ineffable, through his spiritual practice as a Buddhist monk and through attentive communion with nature. His music, whether rambunctious and rock-band arranged like the wonderful awellupontheway (under the Red River Dialect name and the first I heard of him) or more delicate like 2021’s solo disc Monastic Love Songs, Morris makes folk music with transcendence shining through it. It is real and rough and organic, but also eerily connected with other-ness.
This is the second, more or less self-released solo album for Morris after a string of albums on Paradise of Bachelors. Like its predecessor, it concerns spiritual epiphany. Reviewing Monastic Love Songs last year, I wrote, ““[The songs] speak in very eloquent terms of forgiving the self and letting go the struggle, of opening up to the beauty and complexity of nature and finding transcendence in it.” Yet while last year’s disc found inspiration in the very lovely surroundings of a Buddhist monastery in Nova Scotia, this one looks closer at hand.  When Morris describes his ideal home at the beginning of a song (“Ballad of Ross Wyld”), then finds himself living in it by the end, he is not so much making a dream come true as locating the dream in his ordinary surroundings. Did he want the cherry tree before he had it? Doesn’t matter. He finds a way to be spiritually in tune with the place where he is.
Being happy in a converted nursing home, surrounded by strangers, during COVID, amid impromptu costume parties and film screenings is one thing. But Morris pulls an even more impressive trick in “Kareoke,” where he finds peace in a tawdry Cornwall drinking establishment. He even goes so far as to wish an old flame and her new man well (“I let myself feel joy for the both of you.”). He does this as an old song of his—one he possibly wrote while he was with this person—plays on the jukebox.
The music is, as usual, good in an understated way, “both edgy and gentle,” as Morris put it in the keyboard burbling “Pebble.” Though recorded with drum machines, rather than actual drums, the disc doesn’t feel pared back. A number of old Red River Dialect connections stop by to add parts -- Robin Lane Roberts on keyboards, Simon Drinkwater with vocals and guitar. Ed Sanders plays fiddle on one song, and Joe Atkinson knocks off some Spanish guitar for another.
It's fair to guess that Morris is still working out what he’ll do next. Both Wyld Love Songs and Monastic Love Songs have a provisional air, and Wyld Love Songs is a good deal more conversational than previous albums lyrically. But it’s a lovely, wistful set of songs, the sound of a good, thoughtful person dealing with adversity and trying to get on with things—and more than that, trying to find the revelation in them.

The grenade
The grenade (grenade is likely derived from the French word spelled exactly the same, meaning pomegranate, as the bomb is reminiscent of the many-seeded fruit in size and shape. Its first use in English dates from the 1590s.) as we know it today is not a modern invention - on the contrary, it has its origins in late antiquity and the early Middle Ages.
First grenades appeared in the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire not long after the reign of Leo III (717-741). Byzantine soldiers learnt that Greek fire (a mixture of sulphur and oil), a Byzantine invention from the previous century, could be thrown at the enemy not only with flamethrowers but also in stone and ceramic vessels.
Tumblr media
Byzantine " Greek Fire" Grenade, c. 800-1000 AD
With the invention of gunpowder in Song China (960-1279), weapons known as ‘thunderbolts’ were created by soldiers packing gunpowder into ceramic or metal vessels with fuses. In a military book from the year 1044, the Wujing Zongyao (Collection of Military Classics), various gunpowder recipes are described in which, according to Joseph Needham, the prototype of the modern hand grenade can be found.
The grenades (pào) are made of cast iron, are the size of a bowl and have the shape of a ball. They contain half a pound of ‘divine fire’ (shén huǒ, gunpowder) inside. They are sent by an eruptor (mu pào) towards the enemy camp, and when they arrive there, a sound like a thunderclap is heard and flashes of light appear. If ten of these grenades are successfully fired at the enemy camp, the whole place goes up in flames.
Grenade-like devices were also known in ancient India. In a Persian historical account from the 12th century, the Mojmal al-Tawarikh, a terracotta elephant filled with explosives was hidden in a chariot with a fuse and exploded as the invading army approached.
Tumblr media
These encrusted hand grenades were washed up from a 17th-century pirate shipwreck, Dollar Cove, in the coastal Gunwalloe district of Cornwall's Lizard Peninsula
The first cast-iron bombs and shells appeared in Europe in 1467, where they were initially used in the siege and defence of castles and fortresses. In the mid-17th century, infantrymen known as ‘grenadiers’ emerged in European armies, specialising in shock and close combat, usually using grenades and engaging in fierce hand-to-hand combat. But grenades have also been in use at sea since the 17th century. They were used to inflict as much personal damage as possible below deck after boarding a ship by throwing the grenades underneath.
After the middle of the 19th century, grenades were used extensively in the Crimean War and the American Civil War. Before they changed in design and function to be used in the trenches, especially in the First World War and later. They are still in use today.

not to be insane but do you have any readings about religious bdsm or things w those vibes? ily <3
hi yes i do! i just finished writing a thesis about this actually
Jeffrey J. Kripal, Roads of Excess, Palaces of Wisdom: Eroticism and Reflexivity in the Study of Mysticism. (University of Chicago Press, Chicago: 2001) + Jeffrey Kripal, Kali’s Child: The Mystical and Erotic in the Life and Teachings of Ramakrishna, (University of Chicago Press, Chicago: 1996) + kali's child is not about christianity but it is a fantastic work on eroticism and religion from the hindu perspective (however kripal is white and was trained as a priest, so bear that in mind)
Carter Heyward. Touching Our Strength: The Erotic as Power and the Love of God. (Harper & Row, 2009)
Jeremy Carrette, "Intense Exchange: Sadomasochism, Theology and the Politics of Late Capitalism." Theology and Sexuality, vol. 11, no. 1 (April 2005), pp. 11-30
Joseph Rogers, "Do Not Despise the Discipline of the Almighty: God as Leather Daddy and Reading Job through Althaus-Reid." Religions, vol. 8, no. 10.
Robert E. Shore-Goss, "Queer incarnational bedfellows" in Contemporary Theological Approaches to Sexuality (Routledge, New York: 2017) + all of robert shore-goss's work in general (he was the acting chaplain at avatar, the largest gay leather club in los angeles, for a number of years, and previously trained to be a priest- i adore him and his work)
Susannah Cornwall, "The future of sexuality debates in the Church: shared challenges and opportunities for theological ‘traditionalists’ and ‘revisionists’," Modern Believing vol. 62, no. 1 (January 2021) + cornwall has written extensively about intersex people in theology, i highly recommend her scholarship
Marcella Althaus-Reid, Indecent Theology: Theological Perversions in Sex, Gender and Politics. (Routledge, New York: 2000 + this might be my favourite book on this list and i recommend it to everyone, althaus-reid is an extraordinary thinker and her work in general is worth looking into
Margot Weiss, Techniques of Pleasure: BDSM and the Circuits of Sexuality. Duke University Press (London, 2011) is a book i recommend to anyone who is interested in or exploring bdsm, its a great starter book though not explicitly religious
Georges Bataille, Erotism: Death and Sensuality. Translated by Mary Dalwood. (City Lights Books, San Francisco: 1986) + bataille in general is a great philosopher, i also recommend Guilty trans. Bruce Boone
When Did We See You Naked? Jesus as a Victim of Sexual Abuse, ed. Jayme R. Reaves, David Tombs, and Rocío Figùeroa (SCM Press, London: 2021) + david tombs is a forerunner in reading the crucifixion as sexual abuse, approaching it from the methodological viewpoint of human rights abuses in latin america. this isn't about bdsm, but it is about sexuality in theology and it provides an incredibly necessary counterpoint to any discussion of power dynamics.
i'm missing a few titles but i'll look through my library and add them when i can.
edit: bolded my favourites, also heyward is the only book that to my knowledge is not available on zlib or annas-archive.

Whilst I fully get tumblr's bias towards artists, I've been side-eyeing the whole Jonathan Yeo speculation--because yes, on the whole, people in the arts DO tend to be lefty, good people, etc, but it's not always the case. Official portraiture, in particular, tends to be the most Establishment-friendly of all the arts, attracting the kind of artists who are technically very talented, but who also have no inclination to rock the boat and are very happy to schmooze with those in power.
I know next to nothing about Jonathan Yeo, but on a little digging, I found:
He's the son of a Tory MP and is good friends with the Earl of Snowdon.
He's known for a painting of Tony "war criminal" Blair that made him look as tragic and sympathetic as possible.
He's also done chummy portraits of David "pigfucker" Cameron, Camilla (when she was still Duchess of Cornwall), Prince "massive racist" Philip, and Rupert Murdoch.
The notorious porn collage of George Bush was (allegedly) after a an official commission was approved and then withdrawn, so - fit of pique? Who knows. He also did a porn collage of Lucian Freud, which, given that he's often cited as Freud's natural successor in the world of big name British portrait artists, is a little rude.
On the other hand, if you know anything about Damian Hirst, you would know that he must have LOVED to be painted with his crotch in your face, looking like Henry VIII. Dude is a knob.
No one in Yeo's position is going to imply that a D-Day veteran is a war criminal. Just. Full stop. No.
Furthermore, his whole schtick seems to be to paint the background to match the outfit, in a kind of weird, matchy-matchy, interior decor style that I personally find meaningless.
Chas chose to wear his beloved Welsh Guards uniform, which is a lurid, bright red. Whatever else Yeo did, red was always going to be the dominant colour of that painting. The butterfly was apparently his idea, too, because he thinks he's some kind of eco-warrior.
Yes, Yeo has painted Malala Yousafzai, and Idris Elba, and Kristin Scott Thomas, and Baroness Doreen Lawrence, and lots of other worthy people, too - it's his job, he's a portraitist.
If you want my opinion, the impression that Chas is swimming in buckets of blood or burning in hellfire is something the artist did not intend. Don't ask me how he didn't look at it and think, hmm, that's a little on the nose - maybe he'd thought too much about colour theory, too, idk. Judging by his past history, he's probably enjoying the attention rather than being mortified. Or maybe that was partly the intention. Just don't give him too much credit for being intentionally subversive.
But absolutely do keep reading into that painting as the indictment of British royal power that it ought to be; it's pissing off both the royals and the royalists, and I hope it burns, every time Chas has to see it.

== Love Notes ==
Hey there lovelies! How's your week going? Are you feeling the buzz? There's been lots of news all over the world, some good, some bad, but it feels like a lot of stuff is starting to upturn, even if it's just a little. I've had a few things on my mind the last couple days and I wanted to get them out and send some love. This is a bit of a long one and it's gonna get a bit heavy, so please skip to below the === if you don't feel up for it.
CW: Intrusive Thoughts Sometimes your brain likes to tell you things that you don't really believe (or shouldn't) when things are hard. Sometimes it tells you, you're not good enough, or capable enough, or smart enough, or skilled enough, or you don't deserve good things. Sometimes it tells you things would be better for other people if you weren't around, if you quit your job, or ran away. Sometimes it tells you you don't belong where you are, for any array of reasons. Sometimes it tells you you're unforgivable, or incapable of change.
It's wrong, dearies. It's so very wrong. Your brain sometimes lies to you because it's been trained to do so. By society, by leaders, by people trying to shape you into their worldview. There's nothing wrong with you if it does, it's actually pretty darn normal to feel those things. We deal with so much anxiety in our day to day lives, and our bodies are still stuck on thousands of years of defence mechanisms, and it doesn't know how to cope with the constant micro-stressors we deal with in modern times.
So it learns and adapts to your environment. Your brain is so damn smart-- that it takes what it hears over and over and it turns that inward because it thinks that's what you need. What it doesn't know is that when life is crazy, and the world continues to be this chaotic black hole of unending bad news, it'll adapt and turn things more and more negative. That's why so many people do daily affirmations-- because you can train your brain to do AMAZING things. It takes a long time, and constant reminders, but eventually it gets easier. Toxic positivity isn't helpful, but when you have unending darkness coming in waves around you, sometimes even just a little candle of hope can keep that at bay, and eventually help break up the darkness itself.
============================= So today, I'm gonna push a couple affirmations... and they kinda show up already in my love notes here and there-- but I'd like you take a moment to say them out loud if you can, and take a deep breath in between them --Give yourself a little support for today.
I found some that speak to me here, but you can find them all over the place on the web if they don't speak to you.
----------------
I am still learning so it’s okay to make mistakes.
I am loved and worthy.
I alone hold the truth of who I am.
I belong here, and I deserve to take up space.
I am allowed to feel good.
---------------- You are all of those things Lovelies. You truly are. Do you know why I call you all "Lovelies" so often? Because that's the word that encompasses so much of the good in the world to me-- and that's what you are.
You are lovely, just the way you are.
You are wonderful just the way you are.
You are worthy, and you are loved, and I know sometimes it's so hard to remember that, but keep telling yourself that, and one day it'll come a lot easier. Sending so much love. You deserve so many good things lovelies, please remember that.
