'I suppose it would start as drab as any other, a child from a working class family that wanted something more than a paltry existence. I was fortunate to reside within Gheldaneth, a city in which every soul had the opportunity to enter academia for their own wishes... something to honour Thoth, a God of Knowledge? But most ignore that aspect.' His hand waved the thought away, a minor detail with not true purpose for the story.

'My chosen field was that of artefacts of arcane power. After the Spellplague, the deserts surrounding the city contained relics with untold potential. My intent was to learn how to find them and restore them, then to sell them to the highest bidder...'

The smirk turned into a toothy grin, a little too sharp all things considered.

'...And that I did. Business was slow at first, having a font of knowledge with no charisma alongside it...but I soon learnt what made patrons tick, what honeyed words they needed to convince them to invest in my wares~' He chuckled, cocking his head.

'From nothing, to something of worth. A story worth noting, wouldn't you say?'

Miphis watched with amusement as Absolem made his case. Seeing things through his eyes as he points out the other interesting characters hiding just beyond the veil of pompous bores.

"Yes, you have a good point. The ones who wish to share their stories typically have nothing much to share." Her eyes squint and she looks down to Absolem.

"But what about you, my theatrical little friend? Your dress and mannerisms are on par with most of the others here, and yet you speak of the other patrons as though they are of another class. Illk is the word you used?" Miphis opens up her book again and rests it on her leg. Her fist, curled around her quill, taps against her chin as she looks Absolem over. Her eyes were trying to pierce the soul of his character.

Yeah! I think people also need to keep in mind that like... as players we experience these scenes at a distance and can go through them over and over. The characters don't have that luxury, and any irrational/shitty behaviour should be analysed with that in mind.

They're in a killing game where you've only had days to get to know people and a one-on-one interaction with anyone could end with you dead, and Komaeda specifically is someone that's been dangerous, deceptive, and alarmingly enthusiastic about people dying. Even without Hinata's personal baggage about him, just being in a room with him would have ch1's trial and all of the emotions you felt during it rattling around your head, making it difficult to think straight.

The liar's disease scene would come with even more stress considering that he's infectious with the chapter's murder motive. Additionally, in the first scene where he had it a good chunk of his lies were random factual claims with no obvious purpose if you invert them; it wasn't exclusively acting as a reverse truth serum, making it more understandable for Hinata to miss when it did.

Hinata was doing really well considering his circumstances. But he was still human and would inevitably make mistakes, especially with the whiplash Komaeda put him through.

people often attribute hajime being gullible to komaedas lies (the book lie from his last fte, the scene where he forgets komaeda has liar’s disease) as hajime being dense. and like don’t get me wrong he definitely is. but i also think hajime is inclined to believe these lies because it gives him a justification to hate/fear komaeda more if he believes the aspects of komaeda he sympathizes with are a front komaeda’s putting on.

hajime tries so desperately to believe that the boy he met on the beach, the one that was so friendly with him and stayed by his side up until right before the trial, was never actually there. it was all komaeda faking it to gain hajime’s trust. but by the last fte, that belief starts to crumble, and hajime realizes komaeda has always been genuine — before komaeda puts that wall back up again of course. because it’s komaeda.

so hajime DOES still hold leftover positive feelings for komaeda from before trial 1 (he’s specifically shown to be like the only one that gives a fuck about komaeda. remember when like half the class was wishing him death during chapter 3 but hajime talked about being “pumped up” to visit him? and when he was tied up, only hajime wondered if he’d like. Be Ok). but he doesn’t understand those feelings, because komaeda’s done horrible things, so he represses them. and komaeda pushing him away gives him an easy out.
