Shin Megami Tensei (1992) ēœŸćƒ»å„³ē„žč»¢ē”Ÿ
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Date: October 30, 1992 Platform: Game Boy Advance / Super Nintendo Entertainment System / PlayStation / Sega CD / TurboGrafx-CD / Wii Shop / iPhone / Android / Wii U / Nintendo Switch Developer: Atlus Publisher: Atlus Genre: Role-Playing Theme: Post-Apocalyptic Franchises: Megami Tensei / Shin Megami Tensei / Persona / 52 Games Aliases: SMT / Persona Type: Appropriation
Summary:
A long running series of JRPGs published by Atlus, almost all featuring unrelated stories and characters, but sharing common themes, chief among them being interaction with demons through fighting, diplomacy, control, and cooperation. Shin Megami Tensei is a sub series of the Megami Tensei franchise in Japan. In Japan this does not include Digital Devil Saga, Devil Summoner, or Persona. But in North America, Shin Megami Tensei covers all MegaTen releases.
In translation, Shin Megami Tensei literally means "True Goddess Metempsychosis." Philosophical jargon, "metempsychosis" refers to the unending process of birth, death, and rebirth, which is prevalent in Buddhist thought and this belief is featured quite heavily in the story line of many SMT games. Although that is the literal meaning, the meaning understood by western fans of the franchise is "The Resurrection of the Goddess". The title is taken from the original game in the Megami Tensei franchise, Digital Devil Monogatari: Megami Tensei; a game in which one of the primary characters, Yumiko Shirasagi, is the reincarnation or rebirth of the goddess Izanami in human form. The original Shin Megami Tensei was the third in the Megami Tensei series, following the Famicom releases of the original Megami Tensei and Digital Devil Monogatari: Megami Tensei II. Shin Megami Tensei first appeared on the Super Famicom in 1992. The game was followed by two more Super Famicom releases; a sequel, Shin Megami Tensei II, and a spin-off, Shin Megami Tensei: ifā€¦. All three entries were later remade for other platforms.
In 2001, Atlus released the first two Shin Megami Tensei titles on the PlayStation with a number of enhancements. The remakes introduced a "Normal" mode that reduced the difficulty for both games, while the "Expert" mode retained the original difficulty. Special FMV cinemas were included as well. The GBA remakes released in 2003 produced identical graphics to those of the PlayStation remakes, but eliminated the new difficulty level, the FMVs, and the 3D wall scrolling effect. In turn, the GBA remakes received a new Options mode that let players customize the auto-battle AI, message speed and color display. Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne was released in 2003 in Japan. Nocturne surprised audiences by taking advantage of the PlayStation 2 and sticking to the classic elements of SMT's storytelling. It is also the first entry in the Shin Megami Tensei series that saw an official release in North America and Europe. Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey, released on the Nintendo DS in North America in 2010, is, like ifā€¦, a spin-off of the series, and moves the action from the traditional setting of Tokyo to a demon-infested dimensional rift in Antarctica. On May 30th, 2012, Atlus announced Shin Megami Tensei IV for the 3DS; the latest primary entry in the series.

Would pokemon ever allow fusion like there is in MegaTen?
Been playing a lot of Violet lately and remember only one instance of pokemon fusion; which was in Black 2 and White 2 with Kyurem becoming Black Kyurem or White Kyurem depending on which legendary he was fused with. But that was for the plot one time.
What would happen if you incorporated fusion in with pokemon games?
Fuse the same pokemon species together they get stronger? Could you fuse legendaries in that case?
Of course pokemon is its own thing but I think its fun to think about. Tho wasn't that what the Devil Children games were about actually? Not pokemon necessarily but getting kids into the Megami Tensei series?
Just thinking. Or like my shiny hunting in pokemon; do shiny demons in MegaTen exist? I mean probably not but it'd be cool, lol.
More imaginings, lol. what if all the MegaTen main characters were isekai'd to the pokemon world and had to make teams of pokemon instead of demons? What would they all use? Or would they all just try to get back to their own world?
Ditto for pokemon trainers suddenly isekai'd to some SMT universe. Could they get used to the demon negotiation? What teams of demons would the main characters of the pokemon games have?
This post was just about pokemon fusion but snowballed into potential AU territory. lol.
Thinking about it even though it's more science based than the occult, isn't ditto and mewtwo examples of pokemon fusion too to some degree? idk.

hey so fun fact this guy?
Tumblr media
yeah he might actually be a mainline-ified demikids demon
not joking
Tumblr media
glasya labolas only appeared in demikids light and dark versions as a boss and is, from what i can tell, unable to be fused. the recent demon showcase seems to display fusion as a possibility which if so yippee! hereā€™s to another fucked up dog.
but whatā€™s especially striking is in terms of design
Tumblr media
iā€™d say 5vā€™s relatively more accurate than demikids but definitely isnā€™t 100% based on mythological depictions. glasya is a gryphon with the head of a dog (and apparently baby goat horns as shown in this illustration in the infernal dictionary). this seems to be the depiction 5v drew from because of the uh very suspicious smile but i appreciate the overall change in tone.
a lot of the more metallic(?) designs actually take a ton from ancient mesopotamian art and jewelryā€”fitting as the creature is of goetic origin. overall super interesting but the design might not jive with others. definitely a standout when it comes to the designs of other goetic demons depicted within megaten :)

actually speaking of SMT letā€™s talk about the demikids (devil children) spin-offs. for starters demikids has always been interesting as a concept because itā€™s a mon taming game geared towards children released in 2000 (so itā€™s inspirations are pretty obvious) but what makes it interesting is that SMT as a series is literally the predecessor to the modern mon taming genre (with megami tensei for the famicom being regarded as the first game to include the mechanic of recruiting enemy monsters into the playerā€™s party (i word it like that because for all i know thereā€™s a secret game with that mechanic that came out before megami tensei but that probably didnā€™t happen)) BUT they still decided they wanted to make a more marketable one anyways.
anyways the only DemiKids titles to release internationally were the Light and Dark versions for GBA (2002). these ones are the kinds of split-versions where instead of being the same game twice but slightly different, they have completely different plots (that intertwine) and so forth. the two games also have completely different difficulties, with Dark being (very) significantly harder that Light. which is an interesting idea in a vacuum, but i imagine that the gamesā€™ marketing probably did not reflect this at all so i keep imagining tragic scenarios in which, like, a poor grandmother of the world gives some kids one of each version thinking itā€™s the same and the one with dark just cannot get past the games first area at all (<- happened to me). although thinking about it, at least in the US i canā€™t really imagine a grandma in 2002 seeing a game called ā€œdemikidsā€ thatā€™s all about demons jumping at the chance to buy it. anyways thatā€™s just my demikids hypothetical scenario. also the tie-in anime for light & dark is partially lost media

Btw Iā€™m in Futabaā€™s dungeon in P5 Korean, making good time on my stats and CoOps. I have to go away and wonā€™t be back till....Thurs? So I wonā€™t be playing until then.
I ordered the Chinese ver, so thatā€™ll probably arrive when I get back and/or when I finish the Korean version. The rest of the Tartarus Theater mangas I ordered should be arriving then too, so when I get home Iā€™ll debind all of them and scan them.

Megamigender
when oneā€™s gender is connected to one or more of the Megami Tensei games
Megamigender Flag:
Tumblr media
Also known as megatengender. I noticed that I become more female-aligned when playing Persona 3 Portable, so I decided to coin a new term for it. There are terms for each game that released outside of Japan as well. You can find them on the wiki page.
Megamigender is a gamegender in which oneā€™s gender is strongly connected to one or more of the Megami Tensei games. This can include the Persona series, the Shin Megami Tensei series, the Devil Summoner series, etc. Someone whoā€™s megamigender might feel that the games help explain their gender experience. Alternatively, they might find that playing said games has an impact on their gender in some way. For example, one might primarily identify as agender, but become trigender when playing Persona 5. This can potentially be a neurogender; however, the term isnā€™t exclusive.

Title is self explanatory ~~
Yet more interesting stuff spam and Iā€™m running out of text to post alongside it~~
How obscure is demikids anyway actually?? Bought both of the English translated gba games and hadnā€™t played them.
Speaking of I found the first anime and downloaded it (shame on me for theft), but I canā€™t find the one thatā€™s based off of the light and dark books, being the second set of games that were released. Thereā€™s an anime for that too and I canā€™t find it anywhereā€¦or I thought there was at leastā€¦. Found the first ep on YouTube but canā€™t find the entire series for itā€¦
And I thought I was good at digging around the internet to find stuff, lol.
Hope I got the names for those correct ~~

Demikids Light/Dark were actually pretty good games tbh and pretty different depending on which version you got. Dark was the ā€œhard modeā€ of the two and followed a ā€œtypicalā€ Chaos route while Light was easier and is the Law path.

Wow! I just wanted to say thank you for everything you have here. I've always been interested in DemiKids, especially Red/Black/White books, but there was zero information in English! This is a great blog with tons of information so a big thank you from the Megaten community (or at least me)!!
Youā€™re very welcome! :)
Iā€™m happy my tiny, niche archive-blog-thing is useful to other English fans.
(The ā€œDemiKidsā€ name applies to the D-Children Light/Dark/Fire/Ice games, whereas ā€œDeviChilā€ is the name for Black/Red/White.)

Megaten anime compilation (Iā€™ll even include raws if I canā€™t find it subbed or dubbed. Raws will be bold. Also this list is ordered oldest to newest.)
Digital Devil Monogatari Megami Tensei (Alternate link if you wanna watch on youtube. This is an OVA for the the first Digital devil novel that the game series was based on. It precedes the games so itā€™s useful to watch before playing so you get a better idea of wtf is going on. Also the villain in this is Loki and, for you P4 fans, (or fans of japanese mythology) Izanagi and Izanami are a big part of the plot.)
Shin Megami Tensei: Tokyo Revelation Dub or Sub. (the dub is hilarious tho. Also youtube alternative links dub and sub) Itā€™s an adaption of a manga and the manga itself is loosely based on SMT. Interestingly enough it has characters named Yosuke and Saki whom happen to be dating and.. wellā€¦ what ends up happening with them is very similar to what happens with Yosuke and Saki in P4.
Persona 2: Innocent Sin & Eternal Punishment (This is a 5-ish minute long animated trailer for persona 2 that came as a bonus disk with the ps1 release of eternal punishment. thereā€™s nothing more to it, just a trailer but I think itā€™s really neat so itā€™s going on here.)
Shin Megami Tensei: DeviChil (except I found an english dubbed clip ?? also the original op (op 2 is on dailymotion) and ed (and ed 2), episode 50 part 1 and 2 raw, and a clip of a scene from idk what episode but jack frost is there)
Shin Megami Tensei: Demikids (aka devil children) Light & Dark (only 1 ep is subbed. Hereā€™s a few raw eps I found on youtube)
Persona: Trinity Soul (takes place 10 years after persona 3 in an alternate (non-canon) universe. A lot of people dislike it because itā€™s really different from most persona titles but I honestly think itā€™s quite interesting and worth the watch if youā€™re really into persona. It has a lot of interesting concepts, such as, the ability to summon your persona ebbing away as you grow older. Also personas being extracted from their users in a very forceful way (leading to a case of inside-out murders. as in the bodies were inside out. yeah.)
Persona 4: The Animation (Dub and Sub)
Persona 4: The Golden Animation and this special that animated the accomplice ending.
*note Golden actually came out between p3 movie 1 and p3 movie 2 but Iā€™m putting it under the other p4 anime for convenience sake
Devil Survivor 2: The AnimationĀ  (Dub and Sub)
Persona 3 The Movie: #1 Spring of Birth
Persona 3 The Movie: #2 Midsummer Knight's Dream
Persona 3 The Movie: #3 Falling Down
Persona 3 The Movie: #4 Winter of Rebirth
Persona 5 the Animation: The Day Breakers
Persona 5 the Animation
*note a lot of these have official releases and although I linked to where you could watch free, I encourage you to support the official release if possible. I think you can watch one of the p3 movies on netflix. Devil survivor, persona 4 golden, and the persona 5 ova are all on crunchyroll. Persona 4 (sub only) is on hulu annnd you can get some of them on dvd and blu-ray as well.)
Also since I included that p2 animated trailer herā€™s some other animated trailers for a few of the games;
Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse teaser animation
Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux animated trailerĀ  (actually the animated opening to the game. i think.)
