Secretary of State Antony Blinken knows how to trigger Trump.
Not only did Blinken make an overnight visit to Kyiv, he announced over $1 billion in new US security assistance for Ukraine, AND he went to Trump's favorite fast food restaurant which opened an outlet in the Ukrainian capital. 🍟 🇺🇦
The U.S. aid bolsters Ukraine’s military but also looks to a future after the war.
The U.S. aid goes beyond security assistance for Ukraine’s counteroffensive and includes financial and humanitarian aid to help “rebuild a free, resilient, thriving” country after the war, Mr. Blinken said at a joint news conference with his Ukrainian counterpart, Dmytro Kuleba. The new American aid includes $300 million to help Ukrainian law enforcement “restore and maintain law and order in liberated areas,” and the United States’ first delivery of mine-resistant ambush protected vehicles, or MRAPs, to Ukraine’s border guards and police, Mr. Blinken said. The United States has already delivered MRAPs to the Ukrainian military. The aid will also include demining assistance to clear Russian land mines and prevent the remnants of war from causing further harm to civilians, Mr. Blinken said. The aid includes a drawdown of matériel for Ukraine worth $175 million that was announced by the Pentagon earlier on Wednesday.

Searching for Lachin. Oil monotype on paper. 49 x 76 cm. A Lachin-like landscape of rolling green hills, silvery mountains, and red rooftops. Due to the presence of landmines, I could not travel to Lachin with Yusif Mirza. Instead, I learned about Lachin through his stories, paintings, and photos. The monotype technique turns the landscape into a ghostly impression, like my vague mental image of the place. Most of my pieces are for sale! what is the craziest thing to ever happen on sight that wasn't history related?
Hmmmm this is very hard to answer for me because I haven’t been in the field for too long. I think my answer has to go to the explosive side of things.
The first one I can think of is that we found a WW1 Howitzer shell with a corroded fuse and it remained in plain sight for a full weekend because the police was too busy to take it seriously Friday evening. So when they realized how big it was they must have gotten scared because when we later found a hand grenade they showed up with three fire trucks, two police cars, another police car patrolling the area and the firefighters were wearing gas masks.
The worst thing was that the site was a former monastery being renovated into luxury apartments and an underground garage partially dug through a cemetery. And the graves weren’t allowed to go public before all the apartments were sold. So of course we had to remove ourselves from the site, and we stood there waiting in plain sight between all the fire trucks with press trying to take pictures. And the next day the military deminers show up, pick it up with their bare hands, wave us goodbye and leave. That for sure left my head in a weird space.
Pictures of the Howitzer from very far away.

Country by country, community by community, let’s rid the world of these weapons, once and for all.
Tumblr media
Landmines and explosive ordnance and remnants of war directly threaten millions of people caught up in armed conflicts around the world — from Afghanistan to Myanmar to Sudan to Ukraine to Colombia to Gaza.
Even after the fighting ends, these deadly devices can contaminate communities for decades to come, posing a daily and deadly danger to women, men and children alike, and blocking vital humanitarian and development assistance.
The brave mine action personnel of the United Nations work with partners to remove these deadly weapons, ensure that people can travel safely in their communities, and provide education and threat assessments to keep people and humanitarian workers safe.
This year’s theme — Protecting Lives, Building Peace — reminds us of the need to safeguard those at particular risk, including people living with disabilities.
I also call on Member States to support the United Nations Mine Action Strategy, and ratify and fully implement the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention, the Convention on Cluster Munitions, and the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons.
Country by country, community by community, let’s rid the world of these weapons, once and for all.

Drone vs. Drone: New Kind of War Begins in Ukraine - Technology Org

Drone vs. Drone: New Kind of War Begins in Ukraine - Technology Org
A Lithuanian demining specialist serving in Ukraine revealed a video with a new way of warfare, where people are not necessary. Only drones participate in fighting.
Still frame from the video where an unmanned aerial vehicle attacks another remotely-controlled robot. Image credit: Rimas Armaitis via Facebook
Rimas Armaitis, a deminer working on the Ukrainian front, shared a video on his Facebook account showing the war from the inside.
The video shows a Russian autonomous patrolling robot being attacked by a suicide drone from Ukraine.
“At this stage of the war, more drones are used than there are mosquitoes in our swamps, and the further away, the more frequent are the images of a drone destroying another drone or a robot,” R. Armaitis says in his message.
Karas iš vidaus: dronų karai! Ukrainiečių dronas savižudis sunaikina barmalejų robotą savižudį. Šiam karo etape dronų naudojama daugiau, nei pas mus būna uodų pelkynuose ir kuo toliau, tuo tokie vaizdai, kai dronas naikina droną ar robotą darosi vis dažnesni.
Posted by Rimas Armaitis on 2023 m. gruodžio 9 d., šeštadienis
Of course, military drones, are typically operated and controlled by human operators who make decisions about their use, including engagement in combat. But this video is a clear sign that in the future, military fights are going to be waged remotely, without the direct participation of humans.
Fully autonomous weapon systems, often referred to as “killer robots,” have been a topic of ethical and legal debate, and many countries and international organizations have expressed concerns about the lack of human control in such systems.
For now, fully robotic military systems have not been used in any military conflict.

Landmines injure hundreds in Ukraine
Tumblr media
🌍✨ In the war in Ukraine since last year, following the airstrikes and massacres by the Russian army, a new threat is now threatening hundreds of adults and children: landmines 😥 It's spring, agricultural activities are increasing, and the fear of landmine damage is growing. ⏳ Demining is expected to take at least 10 years, and the cost is a significant challenge 🙏 For now, all we can do is raise awareness of the issue and wait for support.
📢 They need our support and attention, let's work together to raise awareness and help them! 🕊💕
