CT:OS Halloween bonus

As promised, wrote like a fiend this month and banged out almost a full chapter's worth of content for spooky season!

The update is three-quarters of chapter 7 (about 40k words including code and variants), and picks up where Sam's visit left off.

Release dates:

It will be out to ko-fi supporters on 31 Oct, and a week after to the public :)

Features:

Deal with the aftermath of your decisions over the weekend (talk to G, Tobin or Rayyan) <True horror>

Attend a language fellow/exchange student dinner-gathering as G's plus one (and the only American in the group). <the G-only scene I promised! You don't have to be dating.>

Prep Halloween costumes with your hallmates (yes, chaotic), and go trick or treating! 🎃

Attend a party after with the team ... then stay for horror movie marathon + sleepover or head back to Haynes to end the night with G.

Yep, Halloween hookups (however ill-advised ;)) are possible.

You can end this chapter very much in a committed relationship with the RO of your choice.

More details on the rest of the chapter/plans for CT:OS for 2024 below the cut.

Note: The rest of chapter 7 will include midterms, a time-skip (with some training/a match) and some fall festival shenanigans (because I love fall festivals). It should add up to a pretty chunky chapter that pretty much seals Act 1 of CT:OS (the 'settling into Cargill' part - establishing most of MC's friendships, routines, and possibly romances, forming a solid base for Act 2.)

I'll start writing the rest of the chapter once I'm done with Merry Crisis, and hope to get it out by end-Dec. We'll see! :)

Cantata Update

Hi all, I just wanted to let you know about a minor game update. I reuploaded the game with a few fixes, no new content. I fixed an image that was displaying incorrectly and I adjusted the volume of some of the music, as several readers mentioned it was too loud.

However, I did not lower the volume of the track playing during the camp attack. This sound was intentional to mimic the emotions and noise the MC is experiencing, as sound is an integral feature of your race. There will be more moments like this throughout the game. I did, however, add it to the content warnings, as I know it may be uncomfortable for some readers. Please read with caution, friends!

I wanna talk about Kuras' scars cause this game has been on my mind a lot.

I thought at first that his scars might be from crucifixion seeing as he is an angel seeking repentance and it would fit the theme, but wouldn't the scars would be more circular? Even if it did cause a tear that far, the scar would likely penetrate to the other side of his hands and from what I can see the part that would be pierced through is still fully intact. Also, I'm not sure if it's on both hands. It's 100% on his left hand, but the only image I can find of his right palm doesn't look like it has the scar.

I thought maybe he caught a weapon mid attack or something, but then it raised even more questions. Kuras is an angel. He's able to practically glide through the dirty streets of Eridia completely spotless. He's mentioned as having unfathomable power and he reattached the MC's entire severed arm with only some stitches noticed. If the MC chooses the Alchemist backstory, they note that no magic was used in reattaching the arm either.

He might be capable of healing wounds without leaving scars so why didn't he do it for himself? Is his body just different? Also who managed to get a cut on Kuras anyways? Did they live to tell the tale lol? His choice in clothing and posing is very deliberate too like we are intended to see it. He could wear gloves especially with his profession as a doctor it would likely be advised, but instead his palm is turned outwards and open for us to see.

Also, unrelated but I think the MC waking up to Kuras and smelling sulfur is a nice touch for the fallen angel thing. You could assume that it might be medication because there are some that smell like sulfur.

Archivist Hypothesis: Vere the Shadowfox

I already talked about this theory in Vere's loresheet, but I'm posting it here as well!

Having re-reviewed [half] the demo, I think that Vere may be umbrakinetic, which Google assures me is the fancy word for being able to control shadows.

In the demo, MC says that Monsters are "inhuman beings with unnatural powers", so being a Monster isn't just a cosmetics thing. While one of Vere's powers is surely having the fluffiest ears and tail in a 100-mile radius, that's not all.

When we first meet Vere—or right before, rather—the MC encounters an oppressive shadowbeast. Though we never see it head on, it's described as “[running] down the street in rivulets” and “[spreading] like ink into blotted shapes.” These shadows form into a threatening being with claws and a muzzle filled with sharp teeth. But, when we turn, there's no giant black monster about to eat them, just this asshole.

And he's got our key, despite being more than an arm's length away. How'd he get a hold of it? Because his shadowfox was literally right up on us two seconds ago—plenty of opportunity to slip a key out of a pocket, especially if you're a shadow and not a physical person.

Not only that, but when Vere smells Kuras on you, “the shadows around him seethe and boil,” like his powers are responding to his decidedly negative emotions about the angel doctor.

This mini-theory seems like an easy shot, so I hope I'm not saying something everyone else already knows 😅 It only just occurred to me on this play-through, since I'm scouring the demo for info for the loresheets and not just drooling over Ais tiddies.

The developer is the same person behind The Weather Channel podcast and Ill-Advised Records. According to them, this game is inspired by a combination of Stardew Valley and World of Horror.
