Fantasy Guide to Early 20th Century Trains

Trains were a popular means of transportation during the early 20th century. The previous decades saw to the explosion of more trains, more services and more tracks linking country communities which were isolated from cities and larger towns. So what do we need to know about trains in the early 20th century?
Typical layout

A basic layout of a train is as follows: passenger compartments, dining cars, luggage and guard vans.
Compartments: Compartments are where the passengers sat. They were divided between three classes – first, second, third. First class compartments were the most expensive. The seats were upholstered, and the floors were often carpeted. They were much larger than the other class compartments. They would be fitted with gas light like the rest of the train, the windows would have curtains, and the walls would often be panelled with wood. Second class compartments were less luxurious but pretty much the same as the first class only smaller and less grand. Third class would feature wooden benches or seats fitted with cushions or fabric, they were smaller and often more crowded. Compartments could be offered as corridor compartments which offered more movement between compartments and cars. Compartments would offer seating areas and areas to store hand luggage. Some trains travelling overnight would offer sleeper cars which offered beds and an area to wash.
Dining Cars: Dining cars were offered on some trains. There would be tables for the passengers to eat and get something to drink. Dining cars were usually offered only to certain classes or segregated by class.
Luggage Cars: Where large luggage would be stored.
Guard Vans: Where railway security staff could get warm. It also held a stove and hand-operated brakes which the designated guard would use to slow the train if needed.
Separation

Trains in this era were divided by class and in some case race. Unlike the American states and South Africa where there were laws preventing certain races from mixing with others or from using any class other than third class, Europe was a little more forgiving in the case of race. However, this is not to say there was no segregation. This was Europe at the height of the age of Empire. People who hailed from the ‘colonies’ were discriminated through subtler means than simple prevention, they would be discouraged from attempting to use the upper class tickets and sometimes they were even treated not as well as other passengers. Class was the main division on the train. First class of course had more ability to move, more access to amenities. They often had separate dining cars where they could sit down to full meals. Larger trains might even offer some other common areas such as smoking compartments. Second class were sometimes permitted to dine in the dining cars but may not have been allowed access to full meals. Third class was not permitted access to the dining cars, often having to bring along meals or buy food at the station before departure. The classes were not allowed to mingle. In cases of a first-class person travelling with a servant, they had the choice to either purchase a first-class ticket for their servant or leave them in third class.
Train and Station Staff

Trains did not run by themselves. The passengers and the train had many needs and there had to be an army of staff available to keep things chugging along *hehe*. That being said, the train staff weren’t the only people who kept things going smoothly, the station staff at each stop would also help out the staff and the passengers.
On the Train:
Drivers: These were the people who drove the train.
Firemen: These were the people who shovelled coal and kept an eye on the steam pressure.
Guards: The guards were there to keep the passengers safe. They sometimes checked tickets and would patrol the luggage cars, mainly to keep an out for anybody sneaking onto the trains without a ticket.
Conductors: Conductors would go from car to car to check tickets, collected any outstanding fares and kept an eye on things in the compartments.
Engineers: Would travel on the train to help out with repairs on the train.
Dining car staff: Such as maids to serve tea and coffee, waiters to serve food and if the train is large enough, kitchen staff and bartenders.
The Station:
Station Masters: Was the person in charge of the station, overseeing the flow of trains and passengers through the station.
Porters: Handled the luggage.
Signalmen: Oversaw the signals to keep the trains on track *hehe*.
Parts of the train

The train is a beast of many parts. A train in this era is a steam train, which links of cars connected together behind a steam engine.
Buffers & Buffing Gear: These are the parts of the train built in to absorb impact.
Cars: The segments of the train.
Couplers: This is what connects the train cars together.
Cowcatcher/Pilot: This is the frame that sits at the very front of the train used to clear things off the track.
Carriages: These are the cars that the passenger compartments are.
Headlamp: This is the light at the front used to improve visibility.
Freight Cars: Used for transporting goods.
Locomotive: This is the train’s engine. It is the driving force of the train, where the driver and the firemen would work.
Truck: The framework that connects the axles to the wheels.
Smokebox: Where the exhaust system of the stream engine is housed.

Comprehensive Report on the Graz School Shooting
On 10 June 2025, a tragic mass shooting occurred at the Bundes-Oberstufenrealgymnasium Dreierschützengasse(BORG Dreierschützengasse) in Graz, Austria. The incident commenced at approximately 09:55 CEST, resulting in the deaths of 10 individuals, including the perpetrator, who is believed to have died by suicide. Additionally, 11 persons sustained injuries.
Incident Overview
Reports of gunfire were received shortly after the onset of the event, prompting emergency services to arrive at the scene by approximately 10:00 CEST. The response involved around 300 police officers, including members of the tactical unit Einsatzkommando Cobra, and 160 paramedics. The school was promptly evacuated, and by 11:20 CEST, authorities declared the situation under control.
Eyewitnesses reported that the initial shots were fired outside the school premises before the assailant, identified as 21-year-old Artur A., entered the building and discharged his weapon in at least two classrooms on the second floor. An estimated total of 40 gunshots were fired during the incident.
Victims
The fatalities included eight students and one teacher. The victims comprised six females and three males; however, precise details regarding ages and the exact distribution between students and staff have not been publicly released.
The nearby Helmut List Halle was designated as an emergency triage center for the wounded. According to reports, five individuals were critically injured, with two adults sustaining life-threatening conditions. Regrettably, one adult female later succumbed to her injuries at the Universitätsklinikum Graz.
Local media confirmed a minimum of 10 deaths, a figure corroborated by the Austrian Interior Ministry. Graz Mayor Elke Kahr affirmed that the perpetrator was among the deceased.
Perpetrator Profile
The assailant, Artur A., a former student of BORG Dreierschützengasse, was legally licensed to possess the firearms utilized in the attack, holding permits for both a handgun and a shotgun. This license had been obtained shortly prior to the incident. Authorities have confirmed that he had no previous criminal record.
Subsequent to the shooting, police recovered a suicide note at the perpetrator’s residence, which reportedly conveyed feelings of having been subjected to bullying. A non-functional pipe bomb and a video message were also discovered, in which Artur A. declared his intent to carry out the attack. The perpetrator’s mother reportedly viewed the video shortly after it was uploaded and promptly alerted the police; however, the attack was already underway by that time.
Governmental Response
A coordinated national response was initiated by Chancellor Christian Stocker and Interior Minister Gerhard Karner, who immediately cancelled their scheduled engagements and traveled to Graz. They conducted a joint press briefing alongside Education Minister Christoph Wiederkehr and Mayor Elke Kahr, during which they announced a period of three days of national mourning commencing on 11 June 2025.
The motive behind the attack remains under active investigation. Authorities have urged the public to refrain from speculation until more information becomes available. Further updates will be provided as the inquiry progresses.

Funeralworms comprise a genus of Juggernaut characterized by a heavily-built, serpentine form, the absence of eyes, a single pair of broad, paddle-like forelimbs, and a prominent array of individually articulated, crushing jaws. They are employed in the disposal of organic materials, the production of high quality fertilizer, and the reclamation of Ibis tissue from corpses. The latter function earning them a central role in Bibat funeral rites, hence the name.
In Bibat, it is believed that Ibis tissue, while a powerful creative force in life, is equally capable of corruption, especially when touched by death. It is therefor not adequate to bury the Ibistouched, since Ibis tissue, if allowed to decompose, has the potential to render the earth fallow and breed illness. By consuming the Ibistouched dead, Funeralworms collect the Ibis tissue from the flesh, freeing it from corruption, purifying it, and accumulating it in their bodies to be returned to the Oracle System. It is mandatory that the corpses of all dagnyds, Sansin, Thrones and Throne-children both headless and unbodied alike, be fed to the Funeralworm. This is not a necessary funeral rite for those who are not Ibistouched, but the devout often choose to have it preformed upon their death. If a funeralworm is not available, cremation is an acceptable alternative.
Funeralworms are semi-aquatic dagnyds that reside entirely in special pools (bymūt)constructed for their housing. At their least elaborate, bymūt are little more than shallow ponds dug into clay soil, but they are often encircled by a low, stone fence with an offering platform at one end, and a chamber for dung collection at the other. These pools are usually located several kilometers from areas of habitation, although many larger cities have grown to encircle bymūt that were originally constructed a more acceptable distance away. These tend to be the most elaborate of their kind, ending up with bespoke temple complexes erected around them. As the functions of the Funeralworm are deeply linked to Bibat customs, their husbandry is entirely handled by Sansin, though the service they offer is a public one.
The design of the bymūt is necessary for the survival of fully mature funeralworms, who are not only so large as to be incapable of freely moving over dry land, but risk being crushed beneath their own weight without the support of water. Newborn funeralworms, at about a meter and a half in length, are the most mobile of their kind, and often attempt to escape their bymūt to explore. This is usually permitted (with supervision), as such young individuals have limited processing capacity, and rarely exist in a context where the sole burden of waste management relies on them. Many Sansin are sympathetic to the plight of the Funeralworm, and see little purpose in restricting the movement of a creature which never approaches agile at any age, and for most of its decades long life will be confined to a single small pool.
Despite a life spent entirely in water, Funeralworms are entirely air-breathing, and are not particularly good swimmers. They are protected from flooding by the high fat content of their bodies, which renders them buoyant and unlikely to drown. The greatest risk floods pose is temptation. Rising water allows Funeralworms the opportunity to travel freely from their bymūt, and many die after becoming stranded once the water level recedes, especially those which are particularly old and heavy.
