And now for something slightly different: branched out and found a decent deal for the Laura Black and White Spectrum figures by ToyCity.

They're a bit of a departure from the more popular blind box BJDs we'd been seeing from Penny's Box, Simontoys, Come4Free, etc. Should be fun to see how other companies interpret this trend going forward.

My package arrived slightly squished, though luckily the actual figures were intact. The character cards aren't too fancy but they're okay, though one somehow got dented in transit.

These are labeled as ball-jointed dolls, but they use mechanical joints rather than strung ones. Their clothes can't really be switched with anyone else, but the dolls are slim enough they can wear most mini BJD and ob11-sized clothes just fine.

(small sidenote: the black dress has some wire along the white frilly part, presumably for more poseability options?)

A side-by-side comparison with Liroro Summer Island and School of Fancies School Haunting. I knew the Laura dolls would be taller, but I didn't realize how minimal the height difference actually was.

A comparison of Laura's articulation with OOTD of Cai. The Laura joints scare me a little because they seem more fragile. Also, the black dress girl has somewhat stiff hip joints.

All in all their construction isn't quite as robust compared to other blind box BJDs, but I still wouldn't mind seeing more of this body style on the market. Far as I can tell this is the only Laura BJD available so far (I might be wrong), and I hope they do more of these.

If anyone has any more questions about these figures) dolls, I'll happily answer them as best as I can!

What a stunning little figure. This Astro Boy toy from Pop Mart wasn't commercially released in my country (due to licensing agreements) so I was very lucky to find a few blind boxes locally.

I love the variations in textures and paint finish, it really evokes the fabric on metal look - and the big glossy boots. And great gesture sculpting.

It's a beautifully unique toy of a classic pop culture icon.

Over the past few months I’ve been OBSESSED with BJD and doll customizations and I finally did one last night!!

This is my Penny’s Box custom of Red Fox, the Last picture above was the before, and I am absolutely in love with her ahhh she is SERVING!! I’m really proud of it ahh 🥺🦊🍂

Some progress pics below! I also unstrung her to do some body blushing, I also edited her outfit to suit her new colour palette a little more! (Her original socks were also bright orange but I found these brown ones on kikagoods and liked them way more!!)

.... I'm running out of space again.

Yep, my blind box BJD collection has doubled since my previous update. And I still have a couple more on the way. My self-control has gone to hell.

I've been eyeing the Chess Club girl (the blue one on the right) from the Teennar Student's Club series for some time now, and I finally lucked out on a decent price for her. The little wire glasses are scarily fragile, but fun to switch around.

All three of these lines (Peetsoon Male Classmate, Teennar Student's Club, and Liroro Summer Island) are by Simontoys. Something ridiculous I discovered is that none of their hairpieces or faceplates are compatible with each other. The faceplates are all different molds (with Student's Club being the smallest), and you can only switch them out with a doll within the same series.

Compare this with the Penny's Box dolls, which afaik are all compatible with each other. I only own dolls from two lines - School Haunting and Puppet Kingdom - and they do switch hairpieces and faceplates with each other seamlessly. (I'm pretty sure the mermaids, centaurs and dragons work with these too.)

Anya Forger - Surpised

Another licensed figure from Pop Mart, but a little more in their typical wheelhouse. Interpretive to a degree. But the sculpting here is beyond what I'd ever expect for a sub-$20 blind box. Texture on the fabric folds and gold filigree, a very expressive gesture, and great sense of motion to the hair.

And it's a chunky little toy. That satisfying heft you get from the Pop Mart house style. You could do so much worse for your $16 in general - but I think this might be one of the nicer Spy x Family figures I've seen. And it's a fraction of the price of some larger fare!
