Lyrically Speaking

The song "Dying Star" by Ashnikko is the last track on her album WEEDKILLER, which is based on a short story of the same name. The lyrics tell the story of Aster, a young woman who escapes from a dying planet that was ruled by a tyrant who exploited her magic. She finds a new home on a lush and peaceful planet, where she meets a kind and gentle woman who heals her wounds and makes her feel loved.

The song uses the metaphor of a dying star to describe Aster’s journey from a dark and oppressive place to a bright and hopeful one. A dying star is a celestial object that has exhausted its nuclear fuel and is about to collapse or explode. Depending on its mass, a dying star can become a red giant, a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole. A dying star can also produce a planetary nebula, which is a colorful cloud of gas and dust that surrounds the remnant of the star.

In the song, Aster is compared to a dying star that is burning and shedding its mass as it leaves its old orbit. She is also affected by invasive weeds, which are plants that grow where they are not wanted and harm the environment. These weeds could represent the negative influences or memories that Aster carries with her from her past. She hopes to find something soft, which could mean comfort, safety, or love.

The new planet that Aster lands on is contrasted with the dying star. It is described as having soft ground, blue fire paths, sea glass shores, and waterfalls. These images suggest that the planet is full of life, beauty, and tranquility. The woman who lives on the planet is likened to a god who holds Aster in her arms and bathes her in her waterfalls. She could symbolize the healing power of nature or the divine feminine.

The song is also an allegory for Ashnikko’s personal experiences as a queer woman who has faced abuse and discrimination. In an interview with Apple Music, she said:

'The people who have been unkind to me have made me unkind, but, ultimately, I just want a soft place to land, and that’s exactly what this song is about, pulling those thorns of the Weedkiller out one by one and looking for someone to take me in.'

The song celebrates Ashnikko’s resilience and empowerment as she overcomes her challenges and finds happiness in herself and her partner. It also expresses her hope for a better world where people can live in harmony with nature and each other.

The stories behind the songs on my new EP out on 3rd January

I don't send postcards anymore when I go on holiday. I used to before I could WhatsApp every vaguely interesting thing I see to the person most likely to appreciate it, but I like the thought that people showed they cared by sending them even when the cards frequently arrived after they'd got home.

With these songs, I'm sharing stories about places I've discovered with listeners who I hope will find them interesting, even though I haven't been there in person. I want to take my listeners on a journey in a "wish you were here" kind of way, giving them a snapshot, so they can read more about it if they want.

First up on the EP is Skeleton Lake, which was the newest song on the EP, written in September and released on soundcloud as a demo on Halloween to give people a taster of my new stuff while I was waiting for it to be mixed properly. I read about Roopkund Lake in the Himalayas and was immediately fascinated by the mystery surrounding it. There's something about that part of the world and the mixture of the spiritual and the danger of those imposing mountains that really captures my imagination, so this rather grizzly end that so many people found on the shores of a lake 5,000 meters above sea level grabbed me as pretty amazing to look into (from afar). The story's put onto a riff-laden Bowie-esque guitar song with a bit of swagger. I kept it fairly simple on this one, but with hooks that I hope will draw in lovers of retro-ish rock.

Track two (meandering Lights) was originally going to be the lead track. The riff is recycled from one I wrote and played in my last band in Russia about 20 years ago. It sounds very different now to how it did then and and I re-wrote the lyrics to give it a more interesting story. This time we're off for an extra-terrestrial encounter with J Allen Hynek, the debunker turned UFO encounter classifier, after whose work close encounters of the 3rd kind was named (he even made an appearance in the film). This is the most musically unusual track on the EP with some samples, keyboard parts and guitars heavily laden with effects. I wanted to create something that felt other-worldly, as well as telling the story of Hynek's conversion into believing the stories told to him by expert witnesses of craft that couldn't be created by human technology of the time.

Track three takes us to Bangkok for a bit of retail therapy, no wait... what's happened to the shopping mall? Catfish rule the mall is a song about nature reclaiming a very unlikely place. A dispute led to an arson attack on a shopping mall, which was then abandoned roofless and filled up with rain during the monsoon season. All this water meant it became an attractive place for mosquitos, which didn't sit well with the locals, who put various types of fish into the water to eat the larvae and control their numbers. These fish found it an ideal place to live and thrived there, swelling in numbers until anyone going in would be amazed at the numbers of fish in the water. Musically, this song features a descending riff in the verses over a 6/8 rhythm and overlaid layers of guitars and keyboards that are supposed to create a slightly underwater feel. The chorus features some of my favourite slightly odd chords, like B♭dim7 and C#m7(♭5) and the song ends with a coda that gets more frenzied and deranged - it was the last part that I came up with on the song and probably my favourite bit.

The fourth place to (not actually) visit is Utopia, which despite being a very common concept all over the world has never actually been created anywhere, as I say in the song. I guess dystopia is a lot easier to imagine and agree on what it is, which could be why we always seem to be living somewhere closer to that even though you'd think we'd want to avoid it. Thomas More came up with his original version of Utopia in the sixteenth century and many others have created their own literary versions. I'm sure we all dream of living somewhere peaceful, with more equity and fairness, but we're stuck in a system that is very resistant to any such changes. I wish I could send you a postcard from Utopia and invite you all to join me there, but it's not happening any time soon. This is a slightly more standard indie-sounding song and has been compared to blur in how it sounds (although that could mean anything with their eclectic back catalogue in my opinion).

The final journey takes us to the gates of hell, and it stinks. A dirty bluesy (mixed with low-fi American alt-rock slightly reminiscent of Pavement) song tells how Soviet scientists drilled into the desert in Turkmenistan and accidentally opened up a massive fiery sinkhole. The Darvaza Crater, as it is now known, has been burning for about 50 years and you can smell it before you see it, hence the name of the song, Darvaza Stench! Again, my favourite part is probably the coda when I let rip with some frenetic guitar work and what seems like a sedate menacing song bursts into fiery strumming and smashing cymbals.

I don't know I was just doodling around trying to find a good melody and it sounded nice on a kalimba

found a cool kalimba vst that sounds pretty good

the ducking removes the transient of the kalimba which I didn't want in the delay

dance music is repetitive, so I'm always asking myself "ok how do I make this different when it repeats"

harmony

as previously mentioned, the song is in F minor

chord progression is Fm-Edim-Cm

electronic music, especially trance, loves to use the VI chord, and it's very emotional

I love it, but I feel like it's not dark enough sometimes, since it's a major chord

so I started off by using the leading tone diminished 7 here (E G Bb Db) instead of the VI chord (Db F Ab), then chose to actually not include the Db, so it became an E diminished chord instead

and then the Cm chord is in 1st inversion because I don't know why, just felt like it I guess

melody

I find it difficult to make a melody not sound cheesy

it really took me a while to understand that a minor scale doesn't make something automatically dark, as melody heavily relies on the intervals between adjacent notes for emotion

e.g. Ab and Eb played next to each other makes a perfect 5th, which isn't a very dark interval, and it's more closely related to Ab major compared to F minor

hope that makes sense

anyway, I stick with F, G and Ab for a bit, as these first notes in a minor scale are nice and dark

then I put a little arpeggio of the leading tone dim7 to match the harmony

I find diminished chords to be difficult to make melodies out of since there's not a lot of wiggle room for other notes that aren't in the chord (there's probably something I don't know here)

then it goes into some C minor with a little bit of dominant 7 stuff with the Bb somewhere in there, as Cm7 resolves to F minor really nicely

then the melody repeats, but changes a little when it gets to the second half of the chord progression

same stuff happens there, it's just different and goes up a little more

1) Wheelfall - Impenitent

If you're looking for a death metal track with a dope ass intro, this is the song for you. The intro is so cool and different. It's your typical death metal track, but there's something about this song that's just so epic. Definitely a great listen.

2) Dim7 - Apophis Enigmata

This is blackened doom metal at its finest. It oddly has a groovy vibe to it in the early parts, but then it gets very doomy towards the end. I'm really digging the new direction that these guys are going it. I really enjoyed their gothic doom metal stuff from their early days, but this new stuff is pretty damn awesome.

3) Skarlett Riot - Warrior

This band fuses really catchy vocal lines with some badass riffs and I love the contrast between them. This band is really starting to grow on me the more and more I listen to them. This is a great jam and the breakdown near the end is a great way to tone things down a bit while still maintaining a lot of energy.

4) Moon Tooth - Little Witch

This song and video are so campy that it's making me love them. I'm still very new to these guys, so I don't know if a lot of their stuff is this cheesy, but even if isn't, I'm loving it. Definitely has a psychedelic rock, classic doom metal vibe to it. Go give these guys a listen.

5) Diablo Swing Orchestra - Knucklehugs (Arm Yourself with Love)

This is the first single off their upcoming album and I am so hyped for it. This song is pure camp fused with being an anthem track. Although I'll definitely miss them having  a soprano, their new frontwoman is bringing some new dimensions to them that's going to make them campier and I'm beyond excited for that.

6) Ruins of Elysium - The Birth of a Goddess

This is their latest single off their latest album and is definitely one of the highlights off it. We really need more bands like Ruins of Elysium that show their love and support for the LGBT community in their music, especially in the symphonic metal scene. Not only that, but be open enough to show to the world that they're fronted by someone in the community. This song speaks to me on so many levels being the bi dude that I am, and I can't help but feel so loved by such an amazing band. I can't wait to be able to meet Drake, because ya bitch needs to do that.

7) Cradle of Filth - Vengeful Spirit feat. Liv Kristine

Cryptoriana is handsdown their best album in the past decade, and this song is proof of that. I never expected Liv to collaborate with them again, especially on a more aggressive track like this. It's an epic adventure from start to finish and I can't get enough of it. If you're going to listen to anything off this gorgeous album, listen to this.

8) Rivers of Nihil - Perpetual Growth Machine

I rekindled my love for this ballbuster recently. I really need to listen to everything else this band has released, because this is the only song I've listened to from them. The riffs are so great and are always in your face. Don't even get me started on how intense the bridge is. Needless to say, it mutilated my balls.

9) Aeonian Sorrow - Forever Misery

I'm so happy to hear that Gogo of Luna Obscura is in an active project again. This song is completely different from the stuff from them. She sings in a much lower register. Oh, and this is depressive doom metal and not gothic metal. Such a hauntingly beautiful track.

10) HDK - Mortal Zombie

Discovered this song after I watched an interview for Sander's project Phantom Elite and they mentioned he was part of After Forever and I couldn't remember who he was so I went onto the metal archives and found this project under him and checked it out. This song is so epic. It's a bit cheesy, but the fact that it's such an intense and in your face track makes up for it.

11) Amberian Dawn - Dragonflies

I am blown away by how insanely epic this new album is proving itself to be already and I haven't even heard it yet. They're definitely going in a more faster direction and playing with some prog vibes. This is such an epic track and Capri looks insane in the video.

12) Evenoire - Forever Gone

This band never seems to fail me. Each song is such an epic piece of work. This song is so beautiful and has such a cool vibe to it and flows so nicely. I really love how proggy it is and how it switches tone a decent amount. Also it's the first song I've heard from them that features growls.

13) Apparition - The Dames of Darkness

This was a random find that I am so glad I came across. Such a beautiful and power gothic metal track. The end of the final chorus is everything. I love finding these hidden gems that snatch your edges out of nowhere.

14) Metalite - Purpose of Life

This band definitely has my attention. I'm very much looking forward to listening to their debut album, because everything I'm hearing so far is amazing. The strong electronic element goes so well with their power metal sound. Not to mention this song is definitely the fastest that I've heard from them so far.

15) Kartikeya - Durga Puja

I discovered this song through the band's record label and I'm so intrigued. It starts out sounding like progressive death metal, then it gets really weird during the bridge. Like, really weird. It sounds like the frontman is just speaking gibberish, but not a beat-boxing gibberish that Korn uses in their songs, this sounds like legit gibberish. I'm definitely am gonna listen to more from these guys and see what other interesting things they got going on.

16) Gravity - Noctifer ~ Le Porteur de Nuit

I discovered these guys not too long ago and this is the second song I've heard so far. They're a progressive death metal band with some strong djent vibes. I really want to hear more from them, because they have such an interesting sound. It sounds atmospheric, but is way to aggressive to be atmospheric.

17) Forbidden Lore - Endless Run

Another random discovery that snatched my edges. This is such a powerful symphonic power metal track and I need more of it. It's rare to find songs like this on the Metal Monks page, so when I saw it, I had to give it a listen, and I'm so glad I did. Their frontwoman has such a strong voice and I need more of it.

18) Eluveitie - Rebirth

This is their first metal single with the new lineup and I'm not mad at it. I was worried I wasn't going to like their new female singer as much as Anna, but she definitely fits very well. And it's also really great to hear a ballbuster that's reminiscent to some of their earlier stuff.

19) The Hardkiss - Part of Me

I was on a huge The Hardkiss kick for a minute and this was the main song I was jamming to. It's so catchy and fun and the bridge gets me every time. I wonder if they'll go back to having the obnoxiously artsy videos like they did back during the Stones and Honey days, because those were always fun to look at.

20) Aura's Seers - In Our Minds

This is their latest song and it's gorgeous. I LOVE the blend of trip hop with atmospheric metal. It has such a weird and beautiful contrast. And the video is breathtakingly beautiful. I can't wait to hear a full length album from them.

21) Lil Peep - The Brightside

It's so sad that he's past away. Especially since I discovered him maybe a month beforehand. This was the second song I heard from him and it really hits hard with what's going on right now. This song embodies the struggles he was going through. But even though things were really rough for him, he always wanted to look on the brightside. Even if he couldn't, he wanted his fans to at least do so with whatever situation they were/are going through.

22) Navarone - Step by Step

I discovered these guys a while back through either Marcela Bovio or Dianne Van Giersbergen and I really dig their sound. They're very different compared to majority of the Dutch bands I listen to. I guess you could say it's prog, but it's definitely not metal by any means. Such a fun song and a great jam. Really am looking forward to hearing more from these guys.

23) Johari - Bloom

Found a new gem on Spaceuntravel. These guys are ambient progressive metal that remind me a lot of Ashe O'hara's era with Tesseract. It has this soft, but in your face vibe to it that I really like. I'm definitely am gonna be listening to their new album sometime soon, because this song is just so great that I need to hear more from them.

24) Maidens of the North - Carry Your Darkness

Randomly came across this song one day and decided to check it out. I’m so glad I did. This song is so great. An all girl symphonic metal band. Do you know how hard it is to find an all girl metal band? Very! I’m definitely looking forward to what they release in the future, because this song alone is amazing.

25) Snovonne - Filth

For some reason this song reminds me of a Manson song, but it's nothing like a Manson. I came across them through a Facebook page and instantly fell in love with the bizarre and creepy atmosphere. It's so different from what I'm used to hearing from gothic metal bands that have a symphonic element to it. Definitely am gonna check out more from them.

Musical Motifs: Four

so, on the discord server Linked Universe Adventures, we started talking “what if the boys had a theme song?” music is one of my passions, and so here’s my headcanons as too what musical ideas and instruments would be used to represent four!! starting us off, the colors!! >:DD 

Blue: (snare/bass, percussion) 

 I headcanon him to be represented by percussion and/ or battery (the marching part of percussion). This is because the percussion is often the driving force in music, the heartbeat of the song pushing the tempo forward. In an ensemble, percussion is often used in tandem with the brass section (keep this in mind for later!! <3). In a marching band, the percussion guides steps and cues, having a percussion section going too slow or going too fast can result in a song that feels dragged or sloppy. I feel as though this mimics Blue’s role in the colors. His energy drives them forward to action and battle, but should this energy get out of hand, it affects the whole group, dragging them along and leaving little room for adaptation and teamwork. 

Green: (trumpet, brass) 

I see green as the brass section!! For some background, heroes are often associated with brass fanfare, this dates back well into the nineteenth century and hunting calls. However, for more recent associations, trumpet fanfare is popular to represent a paragon and hero (superman's theme anyone?) however, its paramount that the brass have *balance.* If the brass is too loud, it can drown out the softer woodwinds and strings. If it's too quiet, the music may not have a backbone, as melody, the main idea of a song, is often found in the brass section. Again, I think this is similar to Green’s role.  In the manga, initially, green sees himself as the original link, the hero of the story. He, in a way, is drowning out the rest of the colors. As the manga goes on, he learns teamwork, and learns to get along and let the others have their time in the spotlight. 

Red: (clarinet, woodwinds)

I believe the woodwinds would be a great fit for Red!! The woodwinds are often used to associate things as small or harmless. But we all know Red is far from that. The woodwinds can be used in a variety of ways, they can be light and airy like the flute and piccolo, but they can be powerful and strong like the bari sax and bass clarinet. Woodwinds are often used to add counter melody or flavor to the main melody, and complement and go well with other instruments, similar to Red! Red gets along with others more than the other colors, and while he may not be at the forefront or have a need to lead, his influence cannot go unseen. Without him, the group would be lacking depth and grounding.

Violet: (violin, strings)

Last but certainly not least, we have vio!! Who I headcanon to be the string section!! The strings have many *many* associations, but the most common ones are class, melancholy, and emotion. Vio, more than the other colors, has shown to be considered more well read, he’s cunning and adaptive, and it's those very traits that lead to his betrayal of shadow, and the guilt and grief that followed. The strings are also adaptive, and can be bass, tenor, alto, and soprano, they can lead or fall into the background, whatever the music requires. However, it's important for the rest of the instruments to *listen* for the strings, as they are easily drowned out. 

While separated, the colors are mainly represented by a single instrument, (the first instrument listed after their names above). I choose higher register instruments to represent fours youth and size, but not the highest register instruments available because while he is young, he is mature. He’s been through multiple adventures, and has had to grow up very quickly. 

With that being said, it's time for shadow!! 

Shadow: (bagpipes)

oKAY, I meme the bagpipes a lot, but there's an interesting fact and association with the bagpipes. Many composers have noted that the bagpipes go especially well with the string and orchestra! (it's all coming together) The bagpipes are rarely utilized in modern music, and thus when they are used, the music may sound strange and otherworldly. They represent the unknown! I feel as though this fits shadow, as he indeed is otherworldly. And along these same lines, as a villain, shadows motives come from a place of misunderstanding and *not knowing* how to act. 

Now for some miscellaneous musical ideas!!

Before pulling the four swords, Four’s motif would be well blended and simple. A basic build off a four note chord, like the cmaj7 chord!! The cmaj7 chord is an fairly upbeat chord with with just a hint of sadness

Immediately after pulling the four sword, fours theme would divide into four separate parts, each using a color’s instrument for the melody of that section and each based off of a note from the cmaj7 chord. Each time one of the colors is featured or doing something noteworthy, their instrument and “note” is played. (this is just done quite often!! Look up “azula’s chime” or “peter and the wolf!!”) 

As Four masters the four sword, his theme slowly stitches itself back together, but it still has recognizable sections to it, and those four instruments alternate for the melody!!

Shadow’s theme would be fours theme reversed and played on the bagpipes!! That way he would still have a connection to four, and be a part of him, while still being unique and his own person! I also think that while evil, his theme would be in a C#dim7 key and based on that chord, but as he switches to the side of good, his theme would become less ominous and gradually change to the cmaj7 chord like fours.

Also representing four before the four sword, I think a staccato beat would be best to represent the fun, upbeat, and exciting nature of his adventure with the minish, but as time goes on, the staccato beat morphed into a steady beating bassline, like a heartbeat.

The director told me that he wants me to be the musical underscore for pretty much all of the show. I'll be on stage for most of the production. Which is. Exciting and terrifying.

I've already learned one song: we're doing Peter and the Starcatcher, and for that one Teacher the Mermaid bit in act 2, I learned the Zelda song Fairy Fountain this morning since I had some time. The guy in the tutorial did all bar chords and I was like "fuck that" and modified the fingering

During practice today, I made up three other song bits. The simplest is just three dramatic chords (all of these are triads: Dm, A, G#). The next is just barred 6ths going up the frets and increasing in speed. The last one I basically stole from myself, lol. There's this big chaotic hurricane thing, and I took the first few chords from For One Night Only (specifically, the Cm half steps and the Dm half steps), but made them faster and more intense. I also added in some nice handy dandy 7ths, starting on the...6th fret and decending to the 3rd to transition right back into Cm. I also wanted to add quick switches between C#dim7, Edim7, Gdim7, then back to Edim7 before repeating. (Those are basically the same chords bc they have the same notes, but it just has different root notes).

I know this was a bunch of music theory jargon for most of you but I'm so excited and wanted to share what I did today!!! Oh, did I forget to mention that this is all on the ukulele? Well, there you go then. YAY I'M AFRAID WOOOOO

Being Autistic is Fucking Weird

Like, I am autistic, but, I feel weird sometimes, because, the things??? The Things™???? That I do????? Like, there’s stuff that I don’t realize is just me until someone points it out. For example;

 Sitting in class, but then, my leg? Does the Bounce™ endlessly? And it feels good because yes stim but my thigh is the size of Russia so everyone around me is like, ‘Why is the seat vibrating?’ and they all look at me???

My musical theatre ass starts squirming when the Good Songs™ come on. Like, my whole body wiggles and rocks and bounces because, this song is so good! Like, do you hear that beautiful dim7 chord? Or the way their vibratos match up? Because, ahhhhhh whatcha doing there sis?

Or, when my anxiety starts to act up because Anxiety™ is a dumb bitch and my hands start roaming and picking and scratching until I feel blood on my fingers and whoops so much for that healing or whatever

When I’m excited, my body is like, “Time for lift off,” and my arms start doing the Flap™ and it’s like, Hey there, buddy, pretty sure that I’m not a bird, but hey, I guess we’re doing this now

When I’m telling somebody that it’s 70 degrees over and over because I can’t figure out how to tell them that I’ve noticed an incredible 7 degree change in the temperature in our apartment over the past hour and it takes them a good 5 minutes to deduce what the fuck I’m on about because words are hard

Talking over and over about the same thing because it’s My Thing™ and I love it but then I realize that no one is listening except for that one person who Gets It™ much to my delight

Making mouth noises because the Stim™ feels good and noticing that everyone is just staring??? and wondering what drug you’re on??? and they ask where to get it?????
