"When politicians unveil a new national park or wilderness area, it’s often accompanied by debates about what effect it will have on the livelihoods of people living nearby. In some places, it can be welcomed as a boon, attracting tourists and their dollars. In others, it’s booed as a job killer, squelching the chance for new mining, grazing, logging or other industries.
As nations promise to nearly double the amount of protected land on the planet, from 17% to 30% of the Earth’s surface, these debates are likely to happen more often. Now there is new evidence that it’s possible to have both land protections and a growing economy. But it’s not guaranteed. “Achieving both aims is more common than we previously expected,” said Binbin Li, an environmental scientist at Duke Kunshan University, a Chinese institution affiliated with Duke University. “But that balance depends on socioeconomic conditions near a protected area.”
It can be hard to tease out causal links between two things as complex as the changing condition of a landscape and the economy of a nearby city. Did a town flourish because of a nearby national park, or because an increase in remote work enabled people to move there? Did another town collapse because a forest reserve contributed to the demise of a sawmill, or was it part of a bigger downturn in the timber industry?
To try to clarify the effects, Li and colleagues at Duke University and Shandong University in China compared the fates of “twin” towns and cities, as well as comparable patches of land. They identified more than 10,000 protected areas in countries around the globe, then examined how economic activity changed in nearby settlements between 2013 and 2020, compared to similar settlements more than 20 kilometers from any protected land. They also matched the protected area to similar nearby unprotected areas, to see if they fared differently.
The scientists used satellite images to track changes on the landscape, such as forest turning to farmland. They also tracked changes in the amount of nighttime artificial light as a surrogate for economic activity.
The satellite images revealed that in many cases, more trees and grasslands stayed standing and the lights shown more brightly at the same time. In about half the protected areas, there was simultaneous progress in both conservation and economic development, the scientists reported on June 20 in Current Biology.
Land protection was broadly successful at reducing the loss of forest and grasslands – more than 90% of the protected areas either lost no natural land cover, or less than their unprotected twins, the researchers found. At the same time, 60% of neighboring communities had as much or more of an increase in nightlights than places further from protected land...
Land protection and economic growth went hand in hand most easily in wealthier countries, around smaller protected areas, and in places with some of the infrastructure critical for economic development, such as roads. In places without these features the ecological fate of the land and the economic fortune of nearby towns was more likely to diverge or decline together the researchers found.
“Conservation does not happen in a silo,” said co-author Stuart Pimm, a Duke University ecologist. “We must consider local development alongside biodiversity conservation to know where and how to protect areas to benefit both the environment and humans.” ...
The results underscore the ways in which poverty and environmental degradation can be bound together. If poverty isn’t dealt with, creating protected areas could set the stage for both loss of biodiversity and economic development, the researchers warned. The flip side is that with careful planning, conservation could help set nearby towns on a path out of poverty. As an example, the scientists pointed to Costa Rica’s Corcovado National Park, which has become a hub for ecotourism on the country’s Pacific coast.
“We need to get to a win-win outcome more often, especially in the most biodiverse regions that can ill-afford losing out on economic development or biodiversity,” said Li. “We cannot address biodiversity loss without addressing local development issues.”

idk if it's the social anxiety or a touch of the 'tism or what but I do not understand how people know when someone is flirting with them. Like I will pretty much only get it if someone straight up tells me "I think you're hot" or something similarly direct because otherwise how do you know they're not just being friendly??
Even compliments like "oh you look really hot!" or "you look cute/handsome in that" or whatever do not come across as flirting to me because it could just be someone giving a platonic compliment? Like the implication is different from someone saying "I think you're hot/cute"
even worse if you're just chatting with someone at the bar or whatever. Idk how you're supposed to tell if they're flirting or just being friendly.
#there have been multiple occasions where my fiance is like 'babe they definitely wanted to fuck you' and I've been convinced they were just#being friendly#i also tend to assume if i catch someone looking at me it's because they're judging me or something and not because they think I'm hot#but that's another issue#basically people should be more direct with their attraction#but currently if you do that it's seen as a little socially awkward#you're supposed to be indirect about things#which is really annoying

#poorly drawn mdzs#mdzs#song lan#xue yang#I know it makes jokes less funny if you explain them but I feel like I gotta for this one:#xue yang’s Spanish here is playing on the fact he’s a beginner (using a commonly taught phrase)#combined with the fact that he’s clearly taking what he’s heard Xiao Xingchen use.#of course XY would want to know how to cuss someone out in another language. Do you think XXC would teach him how? Nope.#XY would ask ‘How do I to someone I really hate them?’#and XXC would say ‘You tell them ‘Te Amo Mucho’ :•)’#As FAR as XY is concerned he knows *so* many swears. These words are just terms of endearment.#XXC would not swear or cuss anyone out but he *would* punctuate phrases with general terms of endearment.#More so directed towards A-Qing but Xue Yang has been proven to be a decent indirect learner.#That said he has also been shown to Not Quite Get The Nuances (consequences of observational learning).#Sadly he never had a good observational model for love or compassion B*(#Spanish speakers please oh god please correct me if I biffed something badly here. I can fix it.

many years after the events of “altered ego,” hiram and his family went on vacation and stayed at hotel shangri-la-la (yes, that hotel from rookie season). one day, hiram found a worn-out business card on a bulletin board. It belonged to an individual named “yunita saechèse”.
“heh, a photographer named yunita saechèse… that’s quite on brand.”
looking at the photo of this mystery photographer, hiram thought to himself…
“wow how do i achieve this hairstyle??”
…so he got himself said hairstyle when he and his family flew back home, two weeks later.

anyways, yunita saechèse hairstyle was so fascinating to me that i put it on my oc hiram just for fun
p.s. — i know that hiram’s bangs are like the ‘flipped’ from yunita’s original bangs, but that’s because his ‘longer’ chunk of bangs is on the right side (viewer’s right, hiram’s left)

#yanxious ocs: hiram romilly-choucair#this seems like the most random thing ever because hiram and inyo have no direct connection whatsoever#although… hiram’s partner’s father worked with (and for) inyo for a few years so i guess there is some type of indirect connection??#this isn’t the first time i drew him that hairdo#supa strikas#supablr#supa strikas ocs#supa strikas oc#yunita saechèse#original character#oc art#supa strikas rookie season

so the continuation of snowgrave is interesting
noelle says the night before kris visited her and kiiiind of but not really? apologized for the snowgrave route. at least we can assume kris is remorseful for that because when we resume control and reassert our dominance over her they fuck up a trash can in a rage
noelle is also excited that kriss old deadpan voice was back. meaning that kris never used to emote and any enthusiasm that we make them exhibit is not their true reaction. even the nice friendly pacifist things though thats not too new information
i didnt talk to catti yet but in a pacifist route she resents kris for becoming friends with susie which. is a pretty extreme reaction. in fact everyone has a pretty extreme reaction to her that doesnt seem. entirely justified. catti also puts a hex on kris (jockington neutralizes kt with the power of SPORTS) and mentions their past of studying the occult together
we also know that kris has like. monster dysphoria. they wanted to be like their adopted momster family even having a horn headband like we see in tennas flashback. its possible since humans couldnt do magic as well as monsters kris studied it with catti to try and find a way to cast magic as a human
i wonder if the human soul we play as isnt like. a demonic possession they conjured. but i also wonder if kris wasnt born without a soul. the idea of a deadpan voice aligns with how we usually depict a "soulless" person
at the same time kris ALWAYS returns the soul to their body which means that kris NEEDS it to some extent. whether thats that they cant survive without a soul for extended periods of time or because they need us the player to do their bidding and play into their plans
maybe kris needs a bustling dark castletown to achieve their goals. maybe this time playing the pacifist is playing into the goals of the villain
#deltarune spoilers#also of note there have been a loopoooot of undertale references these two chapters#some indirect like the hole#others more direct like tv town being built on the undeground#the purple cliffs of the outskirts. the snow of snowdin the waters of. i forget what that place was called#the metal deserts of hotland and alphyss lab#still think ralsei will be the villain. the way things are going perhaps begrudgingly#hes gaining a will to live#we will probably have to seal his fountain too. and he will make us fight him#his will to protect our subjects or our will to be resolute in our goal#not unlike toriels fight in ut#and someone pointed out the main bosses have been discarded or unwanted items#king was abandoned queen didnt have internet access which is when people noted she started acting cruelly#tenna was on the nose about it. but ralsei is almost certainly without a doubt kriss red horn headband#unwanted. unneeded. he will perhaps fall into that role too#defeating ralsei will symbolize a kind of ultimate maturing in kris. a forming of self identity as a human and not a monster. moving on.#given form as asriel the monster kris looks up to and wants to be like. susie even acknowledges kriss side of the room is BARE#and asks why kris photoshopped azzy to look like... before stopping on realizing thats what he actually looks like. and hes described as a#nerd. anywya also interesting that kris does significantly less damage to the knivht UNLESS the other two are down

Had a train of thought that's been following me since the issue where the gravekeeper and the planet of memorials got introduced..
I don't remember Rodimus' plaque ever getting shown off (although I like to speedread so I very well could have missed it)
What if we did get to see it, and it was absolutely swarmed with those flowers? Not enough to rival Megatron's, but by all means a much, much larger quantity then everyone else's.
Cause, yknow.... Nyon.
#telekitnetic's silly mind box#mtmte spoilers#what's his face the gravekeeper did state that every flower represented a life that the bot was responsible for taking#regardless of direct or indirect.#Roddy's intentions with bombing Nyon were to keep the citizens from becoming fuel- essentially mercy killing them.#but hey that's still killing a life.#i am putting him in an enclosure where he can feel remorse for his actions :) this is fine and healthy#rodimus prime#mtmte

the anarchist position isn't a principled stance against unjustifiable hierarchies, it's just a lawless state where everyone sits around doing whatever they want and there is no more infrastructure or manufacturing of anything. when left to their own devices, people famously just completely lose all motivation to do anything, and dismantling the state, the entity that enforces law through violence, would be akin to loading up a game of The Sims and just leaving it running idly with no input, the titular sims wandering around aimlessly until they starve.
without a central authority maintaining law and order through threat of violence, society completely collapses! no one has ever or will ever do anything for anyone without the implict threat of jackbooted thugs shooting them in the head if they don't. there is no conceivable mode of society where this *isn't* the case.
"how would this part of society be run without a small group of people exerting their unquestionable will over a large group of people?" is a question you need to constantly ask to remind anarchists that their worldview just doesn't make sense!
if you can't *make* someone do something, then there's just no way to get them to do it!
asking nicely? using convincing arguments to persuade? just accepting "no" for an answer? (because if someone just doesn't wanna do something, they're probably being lazy, there's never any good reason for them to not wanna do it) all entirely unheard of. How will we govern if we are all equal?!?!
#juney.txt#anarchism is lack of rulers not lack of rules you dummies#believe it or not things can actually be organized without being hierarchical#people would be quite happy to continue manufacturing medicine and distributing it to those who need it#without implicit threats of violence direct and indirect#the question ''how would x work under anarchism'' is basically a complete non-sequitur in a lot of cases i think#like are you completely incapable of imagining factories and distribution networks and so on#running without someone somewhere coercing people into doing those things through use of force#like i don't think factories need to have bosses who can threaten people with unemployment into doing whatever they want.#that part seems pretty unnecessary to the whole manufacturing of goods thing

I was thinking about the masters outfits earlier and I never realised how much missys style still effects the master.
I realised this while comparing the saxon masters outfit to the spy masters, because they are very different. Then I realised, both Missy and Dhawan!Master are total outliers from the rest of the masters
The master typically wears all black, and only occasionally wears more extravagant, colourful outfits

Yana/The war master was a bit different, and big finish actually seems to give him quite a lot of variation in his outfits

But then going back to simm master, it's mostly black again, with just a pop of colour. Mainly red, which I think is a good choice for him, but also a little bit of green, which I find interesting, I suppose it matches the war master outfit above.

Then we have MISSY! She wears almost entirely purple. Sometimes darker, sometimes more vibrant, but pretty much always purple

And then the spy master (Dhawan!master) also wears purple, but he's also introduced some blue, and what i think is actually red but it often looks orange

He had a couple outfit changes but this was his primary outfit. Its so much closer to missy than to any of the other masters. I like that. I like the idea of expressing characters through outfits and so the choice to have him be closer to missy in that respect fascinates me
#doctor who#sorry long post#i was thinking about this during my lecture earlier oops#i missed something about direct vs indirect aggression#the master#dhawan master#missy
