The Role of Professional Water Damage Restoration
Tumblr media
Water damage is a homeowner’s nightmare, often appearing unexpectedly and leaving behind significant destruction. Whether caused by a sudden burst pipe, flooding from storms, or slow leaks hidden within walls, the consequences can be both financially and emotionally overwhelming. For residents and business owners, especially in areas with unique climate and infrastructure challenges, professional water damage restoration is not just an option—it’s a necessity. Many people assume that drying visible water and using household fans will suffice, but this approach often leads to deeper, long-term damage that is not immediately apparent. Hidden moisture can seep into floors, walls, and structural components, creating ideal conditions for mold growth and weakening the building's integrity. Professional water damage restoration services address these issues with the expertise and specialized equipment required—from moisture detection using advanced thermal imaging tools to industrial-grade dehumidifiers, experts ensure that every potential issue is properly handled.
Benefits of Hiring Experts for Water Damage Restoration
1. Comprehensive Damage Assessment: Professionals don't just address visible damage. They use advanced tools to uncover hidden moisture beneath floors, behind walls, or in ceilings. Early detection of such issues prevents future problems like mold growth or rot.
2. Health and Safety Come First: Standing water and wet surfaces are breeding grounds for mold and bacteria, which can lead to respiratory issues and other health problems. Expert restoration teams include mold prevention as part of their services, ensuring a healthier living or working environment.

3. Preserving Structural Integrity: Water can compromise the foundation of your property if not addressed promptly. Professionals ensure that all affected areas are completely dried and repaired, maintaining the long-term stability of your building.
4. Efficient Insurance Management: Dealing with insurance claims after water damage can be overwhelming. Professional restoration services can help document the extent of the damage and work directly with your insurance provider to ensure you receive the support you need throughout the claims process.
5. Fast and Reliable Service: Speed is critical in water damage restoration. Delays can lead to escalating problems, including secondary damage and higher repair costs.
Why Choose Professionals Instead of Doing It Yourself?
While DIY solutions may seem cost-effective at first, they often fail to fully address the extent of water damage. This can lead to recurring issues and more expensive repairs down the road. In contrast, professional restoration services ensure a complete and thorough restoration, saving you time, money, and stress. Whether you’re protecting your family home or a business investment, professional water damage restoration helps preserve both the property and its long-term value.
Don’t let water damage jeopardize your home or business. The sooner you act, the easier it will be to prevent long-term issues. Natural Disaster Preparedness in Los Angeles: Protect Your Home and Business from Water Damage
Tumblr media
Natural disasters can strike at any time, and in a city like Los Angeles where torrential rains and occasional storms can hit hard, water damage is a constant threat. Whether you run a business or take care of your home, being prepared for the unexpected is the best way to protect your property and avoid costly problems. In this article, we'll explore how to properly prepare, minimize risk, and ensure your property is ready to meet any weather challenge.
The Threat of Water Damage in Los Angeles
Although Los Angeles is known for its mostly dry climate, when the rains come, they come with intensity. Urban flooding, sudden storms, and overflowing drainage systems are common problems that can result in significant damage. Older buildings and properties with outdated plumbing and drainage systems are especially vulnerable. Water damage not only affects the structure of a property, but can also cause:
- Loss of valuable belongings.
- Destabilization of foundations and roofs.
- Growth of mold that is dangerous to health.
https://tiptoprestoration.com/
Effective Strategies To Protect Your Property
Preparing for natural disasters involves taking preventative measures that ensure your home or business can withstand the effects of water. Here are some essential strategies:
- Regularly inspect your property: Check roofs, windows, and seals for cracks or possible water entry points. These areas are often the first to fail during heavy rains.
- Keep drains and gutters clean: Blockages in these systems are a leading cause of water accumulation that ends up seeping into the interior.
- Elevate your most important belongings: In high-risk areas, place electronic equipment, valuable furniture, and important documents in elevated locations or protect them with waterproof materials.
-Invest in water damage prevention systems: Leak detectors, automatic shut-off valves, and bilge pumps can be your best allies in avoiding serious damage.
-Create an emergency plan: Make sure everyone in your home or business knows what to do in the event of a flood or leak. Include contact numbers for water damage restoration professionals for a quick response.
The Importance of Timely Restoration After a Disaster
Even with the best precautions in place, water damage can still occur. Acting quickly can make the difference between a simple fix and a long-term issue. Professional water damage restoration addresses not just visible problems but also hidden concerns, such as moisture buildup in walls or mold growth.
A specialized restoration team will:
- Completely dry affected areas using industrial-grade equipment.
- Detect and eliminate mold, ensuring a healthy environment.
- Restore damaged structures to return your property to its original state.
- Implement measures to prevent future issues.
While natural disasters are unavoidable, water damage doesn’t have to be devastating. With a clear action plan, preventative measures, and the support of experienced restoration professionals, you can protect your home or business, ensuring its long-term value and functionality.

Hot Springs Disaster
Fandom: Kaiju No. 8
Sequel to: High School Hell
Genre: Humor, Mild Fanservice, Utter Chaos
Characters: Soshiro Hoshina, Kiyohime Akane, Kafka Hibino, Reno Ichikawa, Gen Narumi (cameo), Kikoru Shinomiya (cameo)
Setting: Yugure no Yu Hot Springs, rural outskirts of Tokyo
---
MISSION STATUS: COMPLETE
STRESS LEVELS: OFF THE CHARTS
RECOMMENDED RECOVERY: TEAM HOT SPRINGS TRIP (MANDATORY BY HQ)
“Wait. This was HQ’s idea of ‘mental recovery’?”
Kiyohime Akane stood at the front of Yugure no Yu, staring at the clearly mixed-up reservation—her name printed on a group couples booking.
Hoshina read the sign over her shoulder. “Vice-Captain Kiyohime Akane and plus one.” He smirked. “Guess that’s me.”
Akane side-eyed him. “I will push you into the hottest spring and hold you there until your katana steams.”
Kafka peeked out from behind a brochure. “Guys, look! There’s a Kaiju-shaped rock formation in the bath. They themed the spa after famous monsters!”
Reno, deadpan: “It’s literally called the Kaiju Kleanse Package. You soak next to a stone Kaiju No. 10. It’s got glowing eyes.”
Hoshina: “...Creepy. I like it.”
---
THE BATHHOUSE RULES:
1. No roughhousing.
2. No mixed bathing after 9pm.
3. No transformations.
4. No sword fights in the open-air bath.
5. Yes, this means you, Vice-Captain Hoshina.
---
BOYS' SIDE – EARLY EVENING
Kafka relaxed in the hot water, arms over the stone ledge. “Man… this is the first time I haven’t been yelled at in a week.”
Reno nodded. “Yeah, and Akane hasn’t hit you with a clipboard in at least twelve hours. You’re setting records.”
Hoshina, still fully armed in the bath: “You never know when a Kaiju will attack. Or when Narumi might prank me with another water balloon drone.”
Kafka: “You could’ve left the katanas behind.”
Hoshina: “Can I though?”
---
GIRLS' SIDE – SIMULTANEOUSLY
Akane sank into the water, finally relaxed.
Kikoru: “So… Hoshina, huh?”
Akane’s eye twitched. “What about him?”
Kikoru smirked. “Nothing. Just wondering how long before someone admits they like dangerous idiots who name their sword moves.”
Akane groaned. “I don’t like him. He’s a walking training montage with too much hair gel.”
Kikoru: “Uh huh. And you chose him as your ‘plus one’?”
“Because Kafka would’ve melted in the sauna, and Reno is one traumatized pun away from becoming a vigilante.”
A crash echoed through the wall.
---
MIXED-BATH EMERGENCY – 8:59PM
A minor Kaiju erupted from a hot spring pipe like a demonic faucet spirit.
Shrieking, steaming, and flinging towels, it caused chaos.
Kafka: "OH COME ON!"
Reno: "I knew the eyes on that statue were too real!"
Hoshina: "Sword Style: Bathhouse Buster!"
Akane (appearing midair): "NO SWORD FIGHTS IN THE OPEN-AIR BATH!"
She proceeded to roundhouse kick the Kaiju into a nearby mineral pool.
It exploded in a puff of lavender-scented steam.
Silence.
A beat.
Then Kikoru clapped slowly from the sidelines in a yukata. “Romantic.”
---
POST-BATTLE CLEANUP – NIGHT
They all sat in yukatas under paper lanterns, sipping juice and looking mildly traumatized.
Kafka: “So… next recovery trip, maybe just a normal hotel?”
Reno: “One without cursed plumbing.”
Hoshina: “Nah. This was fun. I give it a solid 8 out of 10. Lost one sword to the mineral water though.”
Akane: “You tried to name the Kaiju‘Steam Bun.’ I give it a 2.”
Narumi called in through video chat, holding a popsicle.
“So… heard you lovebirds crashed a spa. Is it too late to RSVP?”
Akane: *hangs up immediately*
Hoshina: *already texting him bath selfies*

THIS ARTICLE IS republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license.
On Valentine’s Day 2025, heavy rains started to fall in parts of rural Appalachia. Over the course of a few days, residents in eastern Kentucky watched as river levels rose and surpassed flood levels. Emergency teams conducted over 1,000 water rescues. Hundreds, if not thousands of people were displaced from homes, and entire business districts filled with mud.
For some, it was the third time in just four years that their homes had flooded, and the process of disposing of destroyed furniture, cleaning out the muck, and starting anew is beginning again.
Floods wiped out businesses and homes in eastern Kentucky in February 2021, July 2022, and now February 2025. An even greater scale of destruction hit eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina in September 2024, when Hurricane Helene’s rainfall and flooding decimated towns and washed out parts of major highways.
Each of these events was considered to be a “thousand-year flood,” with a 1-in-1,000 chance of happening in a given year. Yet they’re happening more often.
The floods have highlighted the resilience of local people to work together for collective survival in rural Appalachia. But they have also exposed the deep vulnerability of communities, many of which are located along creeks at the base of hills and mountains with poor emergency warning systems. As short-term cleanup leads to long-term recovery efforts, residents can face daunting barriers that leave many facing the same flood risks over and over again.
Exposing a Housing Crisis
For the past nine years, I have been conducting research on rural health and poverty in Appalachia. It’s a complex region often painted in broad brushstrokes that miss the geographic, socioeconomic, and ideological diversity it holds.
Appalachia is home to a vibrant culture, a fierce sense of pride, and a strong sense of love. But it is also marked by the omnipresent backdrop of a declining coal industry.
There is considerable local inequality that is often overlooked in a region portrayed as one-dimensional. Poverty levels are indeed high. In Perry County, Kentucky, where one of eastern Kentucky’s larger cities, Hazard, is located, nearly 30 percent of the population lives under the federal poverty line. But the average income of the top 1 percent of workers in Perry County is nearly $470,000—17 times more than the average income of the remaining 99 percent.
This income and wealth inequality translates to unequal land ownership—much of eastern Kentucky’s most desirable land remains in the hands of corporations and families with great generational wealth.
Tumblr media
When I first moved to eastern Kentucky in 2016, I was struck by the grave lack of affordable, quality housing. I met families paying $200 to $300 a month for a small plot to put a mobile home on. Others lived in “found housing”—often distressed properties owned by family members. They had no lease, no equity, and no insurance. They had a place to lay one’s head but lacked long-term stability in the event of disagreement or disaster. This reality was rarely acknowledged by local and state governments.
Eastern Kentucky’s 2021 and 2022 floods turned this into a full-blown housing crisis, with 9,000 homes damaged or destroyed in the 2022 flood alone.
“There was no empty housing or empty places for housing,” one resident involved in local flood recovery efforts told me. “It just was complete disaster because people just didn’t have a place to go.”
Tumblr media
Most homeowners did not have flood insurance to assist with rebuilding costs. While many applied to the Federal Emergency Management Agency for assistance, the amounts they received often did not go far. The maximum aid for temporary housing assistance and repairs is $42,500, plus up to an additional $42,500 for other needs related to the disaster.
The federal government often provides more aid for rebuilding through block grants directed to local and state governments, but that money requires congressional approval and can take months to years to arrive. Local community coalitions and organizations stepped in to fill these gaps, but they did not necessarily have sufficient donations or resources to help such large numbers of displaced people.
With a dearth of affordable rentals pre-flood, renters who lost their homes had no place to go. And those living in “found housing” that was destroyed were not eligible for federal support for rebuilding.
The sheer level of devastation also posed challenges. One health care professional told me: “In Appalachia, the way it usually works is if you lose your house or something happens, then you go stay with your brother or your mom or your cousin But everybody’s mom and brother and cousin also lost their house. There was nowhere to stay.” From her point of view, “our homelessness just skyrocketed.”
The Cost of Land—Social and Economic
After the 2022 flood, the Kentucky Department for Local Government earmarked almost $300 million of federal funding to build new, flood-resilient homes in eastern Kentucky. Yet the question of where to build remained. As another resident involved in local flood recovery efforts told me, “You can give us all the money you want; we don’t have any place to build the house.”
It has always been costly and time-intensive to develop land in Appalachia. Available higher ground tends to be located on former strip mines, and these reclaimed lands require careful geotechnical surveying and sometimes structural reinforcements.
If these areas are remote, the cost of running electric, water, and other infrastructure services can also be prohibitive. For this reason, for-profit developers have largely avoided many counties in the region. The head of a nonprofit agency explained to me that, because of this, “The markets have broken … We have no [housing] market.”
There is also some risk involved in attempting to build homes on new land that has not previously been developed. A local government could pay for undeveloped land to be surveyed and prepared for development, with the prospect of reimbursement by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development if housing is successfully built. But if, after the work to prepare the land, it is still too cost-prohibitive to build a profitable house there, the local government would not receive any reimbursement.
Some counties have found success clearing land for large developments on former strip mine sites. But these former coal mining areas can be considerable distances from towns. Without robust public transportation systems, these distances are especially prohibitive for residents who lack reliable personal transportation.
Another barrier is the high prices that both individual and corporate landowners are asking for properties on higher ground.
The scarcity of desirable land available for sale, combined with increasingly urgent demand, has led to prices unaffordable for most. Another resident involved in local flood recovery efforts explained: “If you paid $5,000 for 30 acres 40 years ago, why won’t you sell that for $100,000? Nope, [they want] $1 million.” That makes it increasingly difficult for both individuals and housing developers to purchase land and build.
One reason for this scarcity is the amount of land that is still owned by outside corporate interests. For example, Kentucky River Properties, formerly Kentucky River Coal Corporation, owns over 270,000 acres across seven counties in the region. While this landholding company leases land to coal, timber, and gas companies, it and others like it rarely permit residential development.
But not all unused land is owned by corporations. Some of this land is owned by families with deep roots in the region. People’s attachment to a place often makes them want to stay in their communities, even after disasters. But it can also limit the amount of land available for rebuilding. People are often hesitant to sell land that holds deep significance for their families, even if they are not living there themselves.
One health care professional expressed feeling torn between selling or keeping their own family property after the 2022 flood: “We have a significant amount of property on top of a mountain. I wouldn’t want to sell it because my papa came from nothing … His generation thought owning land was the greatest thing … And for him to provide his children and his grandchildren and their great-grandchildren a plot of land that he worked and sweat and ultimately died to give us—people want to hold onto that.”
She recognized that land was in great demand but couldn’t bring herself to sell what she owned. In cases like hers, higher grounds are owned locally but still remain unused.
Moving Toward Higher Ground, Slowly
Two years after the 2022 flood, major government funding for rebuilding still has not resulted in a significant number of homes. The state has planned seven communities on higher ground in eastern Kentucky that aim to house 665 new homes. As of early 2025, 14 houses had been completed.
Progress on providing housing on higher ground is slow, and the need is great.
In the meantime, when I conducted interviews during the summer and fall of 2024, many of the mobile home communities that were decimated in the 2022 flood had begun to fill back up. These were flood-risk areas, but there was simply no other place to go.
Last week, I watched on Facebook a friend’s live video footage showing the waters creeping up the sides of the mobile homes in one of those very communities that had flooded in 2022. Another of my friends mused: “I don’t know who constructed all this, but they did an unjustly favor by not thinking how close these towns was to the river. Can’t anyone in Frankfort help us, or has it gone too far?”
With hundreds more people now displaced by the most recent flood, the need for homes on higher grounds has only expanded, and the wait continues.

If anyone’s interested in helping out with the recovery for Hurricane Debby, please consider volunteering with Nechema. It’s a Jewish organization but you don’t need to be Jewish to join, and it’s entirely virtual.
From an email I received, lightly edited for clarity:
Due to the risk of flash floods and storm surges, disaster assessments have been slower than usual. NECHAMA has been asked to help identify areas of need in Florida through Crisis Cleanup, a nonprofit disaster work order management platform that utilizes volunteer resources from registered agencies. This vital task ensures several key objectives:
- Victims can report damage and get enlisted to receive services.
- The extent of the storm damage can be further analyzed.
- Local emergency managers know where to send immediate aid.
This volunteer opportunity is completely virtual and will allow you to make a significant contribution to our hurricane response from the comfort of your home. NECHAMA will host a virtual training call for this opportunity on Thursday, August 8 at 6:30 PM Central/7:30 PM Eastern.

Florida's Attorney General is investigating at least 160 cases of price gouging as the state reels from two hurricanes.
Ashley Moody's rapid response team has received hundreds of complaints of overcharging as some companies allegedly try to cash in on people's desperation, and the team is visiting people to gather information, Florida's WFLA TV station reported.
It said the top three counties that reported price hikes after hurricane Helene are Hillsborough, Pasco, and Pinellas, three adjoining counties in southwest Florida. Saint Petersburg is in Pinellas and Tampa is in Hillsborough.
Anna Maria Fiallos, investigator with Pinellas County consumer protection, told the station: "There's a lot of devastation and unfortunately in any situation, even in a disaster, there's bad actors that will take advantage of it. That's why we rely on our residents of Pinellas County to be alert and let us know, so we can go out and do what we can to protect them."
Newsweek has contacted Florida's Attorney General's office for comment.
At a Wednesday briefing with President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris warned that the federal government would intervene to stop companies exploiting hurricane victims.
"To any company that—or individual that might use this crisis to exploit people who are desperate for help through illegal fraud or price gouging—whether it be at the gas pump, the airport, or the hotel counter—know that we are monitoring these behaviors and the situation on the ground very closely and anyone taking advantage of consumers will be held accountable," she said.
Hurricane Milton made landfall late on Wednesday and killed over a dozen people. Nearly two million Floridians were still without power on Friday. Helene killed an estimated 230 people in late September.
United Airlines strongly denied it had jacked up prices as people hurried to flee Hurricane Milton and said a viral online photograph of its fares was inaccurate.
"United capped Florida fares on Sunday," it told Forbes via email. "Since then, the average price for a one way, economy class ticket to our hubs from affected Florida markets was below $500."
It also said it added 18 extra Florida flights.
Alan Rubin, cohead of the Severe Weather Emergency Recovery Team at the Blank Rome law firm told Newsweek that companies cannot suddenly increase prices for roof repair or debris removal after a hurricane.
"There is a standard rate for most of the services that need to be rendered, for example, debris removal, roof repair, and other standard cleanup services that are provided by either private or state contractors," he said.
"Price gouging is a particularly egregious activity that state and local municipalities view as being unacceptable and will be treated as such," he said.
Blank Rome, which has over 600 attorneys in offices throughout the U.S, has had a severe weather team in place for several decades.
Rubin said attorneys general in every state where there is a natural disaster "immediately issue a statement that indicates any price gouging or any attempt to charge more than the going rates prior to the storm will be considered an attempt to price gouge, and that is illegal in any of the states that have been affected by Hurricane Helene or Hurricane Milton."
"Additionally, prior to impending natural disasters, all gubernatorial offices must ensure that no services being rendered are considered over the normal rates," he added.

CrowdStrike update
Software changes might occasionally create disruptions, but major events like the CrowdStrike event don’t happen often. As of right now, researchers calculate that 8.5 million Windows devices less than 1% of all Windows computers were impacted by CrowdStrike’s update. Even though the percentage was low, the usage of CrowdStrike by businesses that manage numerous vital services has a significant influence on the economy and society.
This event highlights how intertwined the large ecosystem consisting of consumers, software platforms, security and other software vendors, and worldwide cloud providers is. It serves as a reminder of how critical it is that everyone in the tech ecosystem prioritizes disaster recovery utilising existing channels and safe deployment practices.

Alright people! We have officially hit the point of finishing Act Two! Inside, Danny gets a little time to hang out with Ohm, and then confronts Valerie.
This last bit is going to catapult us into the Third Act with a bang!
Still aren't convinced? Have a sample of the latest chapter below:
Danny watched the citizens of Amity Park, all dressed in colorful festive sweaters and juggling freshly purchased packages, rush in and out of the Beverley Mall. The entire area glowed with a blanket of holiday cheer, taking on the colors of the strung lights twinkling in the darkness of the night. At the front of the Mall sat the baskets for various charity drives, bell-ringing volunteers wearing Santa hats, as shoppers tossed change or reached deeper into their wallets to fill the baskets to bursting. One of the baskets bore the name of the fund the city had created to aid people with recovery after the curse finished disrupting tech throughout the greater Amity area. That one saw more donations than others, the teens manning the table and ringing the bells doing their best to draw attention to the cause and spread the word of the organization’s purpose. Although it had been commissioned to handle the cleanup following the outbreak, because of the severity and length of the event, the town finally gave in to the need for a more permanent local relief fund. Donations would travel to needy families throughout Amity for the techpocalypse, all the cash earmarked until the end of the year to aid business owners and suburban families alike, before they reconvened in the new year to set up a budget to plan for common disasters.
His friends planned to sunset the website, and its toxic forums, by the end of December and hand the domain over to the new charity. Good riddance in his opinion. If he had to read through one more of Dash’s Phantom rants to ban the asshole after January first, he’d blow up the other boy’s laptop. The Baxter’s were rich enough to buy him a new one the next day, but the catharsis would be worth its weight in gold. He’d told Sam and Tucker that Dash owned the GhostTeen account, and skipped over everything else to do with that night in terms of their conversation. He’d shown them the advertising packet, and shoved the fan mail into the bottom of his drawer. He’d burn it this weekend now that everything calmed down; he just hadn’t had a chance.
They were going over it together on the phones as he did patrol. Unfortunately, Team Phantom agreed Dash did have some brains between the bones of his skull, because the designs for the line and the plans for launch were actually good. Once they’d started going through the papers in detail, he’d realized Dash oversold the input from Ms. Avery or anyone else. Everything carried the fingerprints of his direct involvement, with meticulous attention to even the tiniest bit of information he knew about Phantom. It still landed somewhere between creepy and awe-inspiring. Not the good kind like ‘awesome’, but the bad kind like ‘Biblical down-pouring of fire by the Old Testament God’. If the dude’s brains had enough wherewithal to come up with all of this, then he shouldn’t be flunking school. Once again, he wished he’d focus more of the fanaticism into passing Sophomore year and less into the basketball season as he tried to put the team on his back and carry them back to state. “I actually like the designs for the hoodie. I kinda want one, which is saying something, because I know Dash made it.”
“He’s got a mind for fashion and graphic design. It’s weird he doesn’t take more art classes.” Sam had a digital copy on her computer, Tucker too. He’d scanned them the previous weekend.
“I bet he’d call it ‘gay’ if he did take them. You heard how much he complained about dance classes. Those things are just exercising to a beat. It’s more like athletics than performing art,” Tucker said.
“Dash thinks everything is gay. At least, everything he hates,” Sam pointed out. He tried not to wince at the topic of conversation, refocusing on the jaunty Christmas music and excited children dancing along below.
